It has already been mentioned, but I must emphasise a good point. Jewel is a woman, that's how women are supposed to be shaped!, not a pencil-like waif. It doesn't matter how she looks to all of us, just as long as she's comfortable with what she is wearing you people who are paying her out for being "fat" should be ashamed of yourselves. In a society in which we all live, it is women like Jewel that young girls should apsire to be like instead of the likes of Kate Moss. Naturally she looked tired on this show... she has been on a world tour non-stop all year + doing countless other projects along the way. So obviously it would catch up to her sooner or later. Another thing I would like to add about this list ( I know I seem like I'm whinging, but I don't post often. So this is the only chance I have!)... I was apart of this list about the same time last year. While it may not have been perfect I can recall that there were not countless posts about such tedious things as Jewel's religion, weight, whether or not Jewel is married, whether she has had enough sleep etc, but most were about her music and our appreciation of it. Isn't what this list is all about?. I thought so. Let's focus all our energies on something more productive and support Jewel for who she is .. not who we want her to be :o) BlushAngel Caroline "She's the flower that grows despite cement holes and she will survive" - -Jewel ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Oct 1999 02:28:09 EDT From: DmBear978@aol.com Subject: * A Lurking Vet with 2 cents :-) (long) Hi Ya'll, Some of you people know me, but most don't. My name is Alex :-). Try not to confuse me with Alex the Scotish Angel(even though Scotish is in my roots). I just wanta give a bit of what I've seen happen on the EDA list since I stumbled upon it about 2 1/2 years ago. And a little 2 cents about Jewel too. Day in and day out, people always gotta critize something good or bad about Jewel(s) _______. That has happened and will continue to happen till this list goes off-line(not that I want it to :-) Its just one of those things to keep conversation going. I (and plenty of other people) joined up after seeing the WWSYS video and we missed Jewelstock by mere months(ah well, STIBTW) Still in the months afterwards, day in and day out people were submitting things that are rarely spoken about on the list today. Storys and poems and songs and all sorts of posts that made this list turn into a "community". Somebody would tell of their life struggle and could turn to the list for support. Somebody had an awsome day or week and could turn to the list for a little internet celebration. If ever you checked out other musician/band mailing lists, their communitcation off the list is minuet compared to what we've got. We always got something going locally, which is why there are SO many friendships made off the list. It would be awsome if people would post more about their first EDA gathering or their favorite EDA experience. If people would do that, it would give me more reason to actually read the digests instead of skimming the table of contents. Its all up to who wants be the difference that makes a difference(ok,ok so I riped it off..sorry :-D My bit on Jewel. Here goes. In my travels across Califorina, the only things that I've seen change about Jewel or change within Jewel is a big fat Nada, zip, zero. Thats right, I haven't seen much of any change. Take away the larger crowds, growing number of TV and radio appearances, a book of poetry(oh, wait leave that its cool :-), second CD w/ a couple singles, and a growing arsenal of songs/poems and you've got the same Jewel from 1997(I wasn't around that much in '96 -- I lurked in '96 and started posting in '97) to 1999. If you remember, she didn't do much in '98 cause of RWTD movie and the making of 'Spirit'. But, besides that, she's the same woman who played at Hospitality Point 9.20.97(the day I met most of the people I know now) to the Now and Zen Fest 9.26.99(another one of those EDA highlights for me, BTW- I NEED SilverWare!!!) LoL! Had to be there, I guess. :-D Like I was saying, it was great to be on this list back in the days. I don't see much of any reason why we can't tell each other about ourselves anymore. I know that ALOT of us are strangers to each other now. I felt like that too for quite awhile. Thats why I can't say it enough, get in touch with local EDAs a get a gathering or Living Room Concert or Living Room Tour going. They were a group of people who talked about her music, her life, and everything else. They felt loved and was proud to be apart of this community! Then Jewel hit it big and this following grew to great proportions of people who "liked" Jewel's music! Times changed, this tight knit group got stretched to the breaking point and that happy little place was no more. Now it is a source of information and a place to spout out thoughts and everlasting topics! Maybe, one day that little group rise again and take over their community! She is not a stomach, a layer of eyeshadow, or the hottest MAC shade of lipstick. Her stomach..she is a woman and whoever started the whole thing about her "belly hanging over her skirt"....how superficial do you get? I've seen so many people judging Jewel on her appearance on this list. This list is to show how beautiful a person can be without being a size 0, with no blemishes, and just plain "perfect". She is human. Instead of looking like a little girl, she looks like a woman. YES! WOMAN! W-O-M-A-N! I've had enough, as I'm sure many other EDAs have, with you few that tend to judge her on her physical appearance. Get past it, I'm sure you are not perfect! that's it. that's all I have to say. Please review what you say before starting another "rumor" about pregnancy, or romance or her being "overweight"! It's nothing big, nothing new. She's a human being. I was watching 1515 News on MTV that I tapes the morning after Net Aid and they were re-capping things plus a couple other interviews. Well I was re-watching this and notice an interview from Sevendust about Woodstock and Jewel. Here's is the "transcript" (only the Jewel parts) Kurt Loder ... intro ... "Another post PC phenomenom of the late '90's has been the explosive musical blend of hard-core rap and white-boy metal. As exemplifiedby such bands as Korn & Limp Bizkit, and now Sevendust, a racial intergrated band from Atlanta that is currently promoting it's second album "Home". Sevendust played this year's Woodstock fesitival facing-off on the second stage against first stage star Jewel. And they have some stories to tell." Morgan Rose (Sevendust) 8/24/99 "I mean ... we were heavy ... you know, and a ... or we are a heavy band and you know, we love Jewel" but Jewel's not heavy" "You know you wanna hear something heavy and you know, and your choices are between us and Jewel." Now showing clips with a voice over by -- can't remeber his name -- he's always on and has been there forever and he has a space between his teeth -- and I can't think of his name -- sorry anyways he says.... "To be fair to Jewel Woodstock '99 was an 'only the stong survive' event and Sevendust is a band that has learned to survive." And they go on to talk about the band -- that's all that's mentioned on Jewel but it's funny that they assume more people want to be there for all the heavy stuff. I have yet to hear Jewel's entire performance but the set-list looked good and everyone said she did a great job. So Whatever -- right? I have to disagree with DmBear on this one. Not because I've seen change in the years 1997-1999, on the list or in Jewel's music. But because what I believe is that the major change, shift, whatever you want to call it, already happened by 1997. I believe that Jewel's major changes took place in around 1996. 1996 was the last time I personally attended a truly high-quality Jewel concert. It's the last time she played small venues. It's the last time her setlists varied considerably from show to show. It's the last time she was relatively low-make-up low-glamour more of an earthy looking person(as presented to the public) and she rarely sang songs without her guitar. It's the last time I saw her do relevant television such as her appearances with John Stewart, Charlie Rose, and Lauren Hutton. I think in the years 1997-1999 Jewel's music has tailed off(my opinion) and she has become increasingly more mainstream and has steadily lost credability. As for the future, it looks mixed. I am not all that enthused about the Christmas album Joy(to the point that I will not be acquiring it) and think it can only hurt her credability, and I intensely dislike "What's Simple is True." On the other hand, the film Ride With The Devil has gotten good buzz and I think this might help her credability. I have not seen the film yet but the director, Ang Lee, is about as legit as you can get. Perhaps working with him can have something of the effect that Courtney Love got from working with Milos Forman, the outstanding director of The People Vs. Larry Flynt, for which she received rave reviews, and which was an amazing film, the best of its year(1997?) I thought.
