I expect this *temporary* change to last about 2-3 weeks at the most, after which things will hopefully be back to normal. There WILL still be daily delivery, but just not as often each day. It's likely there will be up to 18 hour gaps between some "deliveries", so I wanted you to know this so you don't think something is wrong with your subscription or email server.. (you'd be amazed how many times I get a post wondering if "my subscription was cancelled. I haven't gotten list mail all day" on the days where I was a few hours later than usual putting through list mail....I guess with 2,000 subscribers it's to be expected). Normally I send on EDA list mail before I head to work each morning, shortly after arriving home from work, and two or three times during the evening hours before I hit the sack for my beauty sleep. Yes, I know, I know....I need a lot more sleep obviously ;-) Anyway, during this temporary period, I will be sending on mail early in the morning and then late evening before beddy-bye time. There may be some days I will follow the ol' usual routine, but for the most part, I will likely be sending on mail twice (early and late) during the the day. Again, I expect this to last maybe 3 weeks. Also, during this period, I will be slower than usual in replying to personal email, so please be patient if I do not get back to you for a few days. Hi angels, I've read the emails, I'd like to say just a bit. Hope you'll hear me out. I understand some of you feel information about Jewel should remain Jewel's to share, but what happened to plain old curiosity, trying to relate.. It's just that I don't think the initial question was meant as an invitation to snap at people who are trying to ask a question about Jewel. That's the only thing I don't feel is right about your replies. It's not like I disagree with you, infact, I agree with you 100% about Jewel's private life. But isn't it so that it's not up to you to decide what people can and cannot ask about Jewel. That's Jewel's to decide. Because she cannot monitor everything that's said, we have to make sure what we ask and say about her is correct, honest and respectful. Mandy :) *** NetAid gets 2.4 mln Web hits NEW YORK (AP) - More than 2 million people logged on to the World Wide Web to watch Saturday's NetAid concerts held to fight poverty, organizers said Monday. The Web site logged 2,385,455 visits for the Internet broadcasts alone, said Mojgan Khalili, a spokeswoman for Cisco Systems Inc. Other visitors used the Web site to learn about conditions that foster poverty, make donations and volunteer help. The NetAid concerts in London, Geneva and East Rutherford, N.J., featured the Eurythmics, U2's Bono, Jewel and dozens of other musicians. Sponsored by the United Nations, Cisco and other Internet companies, the concerts aimed to draw attention to the Web site. Khalili said she knew of no technical problems that prevented users from accessing the Web site during peak periods on Saturday. The site remains operational, and organizers hope to get 1 billion visits by the end of the year. The endeavor proved to be a technological feat. The Web site used 1,500 powerful server computers in 90 locations worldwide. Engineers designed the site to handle 60 million "hits" every hour, a figure 10 times higher than peak online visits during the last Olympic Games. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Oct 1999 01:06:41 EDT From: BlissNangels@aol.com Subject: * Re: Why is Jewel's religion anyone's business? Maybe it's because we are so encouraged by her drive to sqeeze generocity out of human kind. Maybe it's because she's become an inspiration to many of us in the hardest moments in our lives. Maybe we just would like to know what motivates her, which inturn motivates us. Whether it's religion, new love, or whatever else we talk about...it's important to us. All that makes Jewel who Jewel is....we just want to find out what her building blocks are. Despite what you say, she is not just a talented performer, she's a role model, a friend, an inspiration, a saint to some. She's the motivation in my life to be a better person. I don't think you should judge me or anyone else because of that. -Steph In a message dated 10/12/1999 4:54:34 AM, mn3@dana.ucc.nau.edu writes: << I can't believe some of the things that show up on this digest. In the 3 weeks or so since I've subscribed, I've seen supposed fans falsely suggest that Jewel was pregnant, try to say that Jewel & Steve Poltz should still be together (like her fans should get to dictate her personal life), attempt to get all the subscribers of this list to go to some "Enquirer" on-line link to see a picture of Jewel's alleged new cowboy boyfriend... and now, someone questioned Jewel's religion? Umm.. I don't understand. Why, should Jewel fans, simply by being fans, have a right to know every detail about her life? I'm sorry, but her Christianity, or lack thereof, is none of anyone's business. She's an incredibly talented performer; that's really all that matters. It's not up to anyone to try to save Jewel's soul. ~Michelle >> ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Oct 1999 14:37:31 +0100 From: "Mike Gray" Subject: * Jewel's religion / inquisitive fans... >before... But now that I know some of you people are questioning her >religon... Frankly- it makes me sick... And not that anyone cares, but I am I don't recall anyone questioning her religion - I think people are interested as to what religion she is because of the number of references she's started making to God in her songs, something which she never really mentions in interviews. People are looking as to what religion means to her and why, and that's a perfectly fair human interest. As for the Steve Poltz thing - well, I think people get the idea that they're together from the *enormous* *massive* *earth-shattering* chemistry between them on stage at virtually every gig they play. If you put an impartial observer in that crowd, I think they'd draw the same conclusions that some of the list have been drawing. Of course, if they knew the whole Jewel / Steve background then... >discussion about how her music is food for our angel souls? Where is the Well, arguably her music is far less food for our angel souls than it has been... Pieces Of You and the whole set of songs around that time were far more 'deep' if you will than some of the choices on her new album... I mean, the day on which "Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer" is soul food is a long way off... in my humble opinion. I have no intention of re-opening the whole can of worms over whether Sprit and to a far greater extent Joy are symptoms of Jewel selling out totally to an increasingly controlling industry, but it does tie into the whole debate. Jewel is increasingly becoming public property and appears to be pandering far more to the establishment than ever before - people are currently wondering just *who* is the real Jewel? Is it the Jewel who seemed to suggest that she was sceptical about God ""God kills children with our very own hands," or As children we are told that from god we fell." - or does she genuinely believe that "We are God's hands"? Does she want to be singing "Ophelia drowned in the water, crushed by her own weight" or "Rudolph the red nosed reindeer had a very shiny nose"? There's a blurry line appearing between the Jewel we thought of before and the Jewel who exists now. This is a discussion list - people don't have a right to know, but gossip is allowed, and the list is moderated to try and keep the more offensive comments from ever reaching the list. The National Enquirer article is of interest to Jewel fans and has a perfectly legitimate place on this list, surely - even though you might not agree with it, some people are interested to see what is written about someone they're a fan of in print. Look at places like A Dent In The Tori Amos Net Universe (www.tori.by.net) which is *incredibly* comprehensive and includes hundreds of articles, both positive and negative because they are of genuine fan interest. Just my 2c Also, when is Joy released in the UK? The release date I have is Monday, November 8th - is this correct? I think that on this list, we are learning about Jewel. Her religion, marital status, and maternal status are questionable topics and people have opinions. Yes, the pregnancy thing was annoying, i agree, but it was important for Jewel fans such as us. We cannot help the suspicion of changes in her life. As long as they aren't downright nosiness, i think we have a right to express the way we feel on this list. It would be news to everyone if she were and that is why we are here: to distribute news on the important transitions of Jewel's life. Not to say "OH WE LOVE HER SOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!!" That would get old very quickly. I have to disagree with the first statement made about us caring about Jewel's life, religion, and such. While I believe it is not our business to nose into anything she wishes to remain private, it is not so bad to ask a question such as her religion simply because we are curious. I know many of us love her music and poetry, AND her as a person so it doesn't seem wrong to wonder more about her as a person. Altho we shouldn't violate her, or anyone, on something that they don't want to be questioned about, I don't think being curious about her in this aspect is doing that. Also about calling Jewel hypocritical for singing Christmas songs...I don't think at all that she is being hypocritical. Christmas songs are not just about God and Christian beliefs but also about the spirit of Christmas, which to me, is kindness. Just because she is not Christian does not mean that she is not allowed to sing Christmas songs. She should be able to find truth in what she wants without being called a hypocrite. Plus Jewel has said that she believes in God in her own way..in ANWA she says that maybe she doesn't find God in churches but still believes in her own way. Jewel may speak and sing about kindness and philosophical questions, and humanism - but humanism that WE can do things to help people, and change things. Secularism is indifference or rejection to religious consideration..I don't think she ever did that. I know what I'm trying to say, but I don't think I'm making a whole lotta sense here. I just don't think it's hypocritical because Christmas, with or without the religious context (altho without doesn't really make sense...), is kind spirited..so is Jewel..... amy *the raindrop angel* ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Oct 1999 21:55:11 EDT From: Mika911@aol.com Subject: * Re: MrBB-Jewel's NEXT single Lets hope Jewel's website will have a real audio version of this single available as well. I myself am curious about Jewel's religion, not out of a converting frenzy, but I think it would be interesting to know what religion she is. Why are you trying to give a religious rigor to her beliefs? Everything is god, It is in joy you find heaven, or nirvana or whatever paradise you wish. The only REAL post asking about her religion was the one simple original message asking (innocently I might add) about her religion. EVERY OTHER message following that one has been backlash. Why can't we have a discussion about it instead of arguing? I did not read one decent reply that had a clear suggestion about her religion. It was either "how rude this" or "how rude that", or vice versa. My point is that while we are arguing, no one has ever really posted a real answer to this question, it has all been arguments (though I admit I have not read EVERY post about it...) I'll start the trend... In my opinion, I think Jewel does not have a religion. She has said in many, many, many interviews that even though she was raised in a Muslim family, she has not fully practiced it as an adult. She has said herself that she does not practice any particular religion, but does believe in the influences of God and Jesus Christ. Therefore, in conclusion, Jewel does not have a religion. Does that satisfy everyone's curiosity? Jewel has said it herself..she has no religion.
