Where do I start? I won't bore you with the problems I went through just to get there, but I did get there. There were 13 of us total at the beach (Iris, Alice, Amy, Sue, Michele, Sonia, Kelli, Eric, Johnny, Dennis, Steve, Jeff and lil' ol' me) helping to make it a cleaner place to have parties and throw beer bottles in. I didn't get to see/hear the final tallies, but there had to have been around 250 bottles found! While we combed the beach we entertained ourselves by basking in the pure enjoyment of being able to be with our EDA bretheren and glancing at the water, which was littered with sailboats. I'm proud to say that there seemed to be a lot less trash this time than there was in the Spring, which I hope means we're making a difference (but also means that the group photo with our pile of trash wasn't as impressive). After the nitty gritty was done with we headed toward nourishment. It was a much needed element seeing as EDAs were repeatedly collapsing all over the beach. Amy and Dennis did supply assistance to these famished individuals by cracking their whips and giving them words of motivation. We made a quick pit stop at Tammy and Rob's to scoop 'em up and scope out the new pad (that'll do Tammy, that'll do). We then headed to some restaurant displaying a (drawn) pig's head where I had the "not so" cajun chicken (Am I giving too much detail?). After dinner we did the typical EDA routine of standing around for a while trying to figure out what to do next. We finally decided to go to FunMania where they housed the EDA favorite... Harley gam... HEY! OUT OF ORDER!?! :o( There's no need to worry though, because while we ran around like headless chickens, a new favorite game was found. Well, need I mention that I kicked butt in this 4 player racing game once I got used to using the clutch? I thought not ;op Once the game had drained a sufficient amount of our money, we decided to head elsewhere. What to do? What to do? What to do? (repeat 20 times). Decisions were finally made, but they involved EDAs splitting into two groups (3 if you count Tammy and Rob going home). So after some farewells, Alice, Kelli, Iris, Eric, Johnny and I head to the city (New York) for some good old fashion karokee :o) Arriving in the city at around 9:30 pm, we bought a couple of cases of refreshments in order to moisten our gullets during our private little concert. Then, after waiting 30 min in the karokee lobby, we were led to the chamber where we were to stay for 2 hours and come out changed persons. What occured in that little room I cannot reveal and will probably always remain a mystery to those who did not partake. But if you'd like a copy of the tape, just contact Johnny ;o) It was nearly 1:30 am when we finished so it was obviously time to get everyone home. I have to admit one thing here to my little group. I was still winded up so I walked around Time Square (which isn't a safe looking place late at night). When I finally did head home I noticed by book bag was completely opened, but was relieved that nothing was missing :o) Overall, it was a great gathering; a good deed was done, several bad ones too ;o) Old friends reunited and new ones were introduced, and there was rarely a dull moment. I urge you all to attend gatherings mentioned on the list, especially EDAF sponsored ones since your helping communites while having loads of fun! Jewel isn't the most important person this list deals with. WE* ARE! Help support that fact by getting together with your fellow comrades and create beauty together. Of what am I rambling about you might ask? I refer to our party of stalwart EDAs who rose in challenge against the early morning hours/inclement weather and came out to participate in the Beach Clean-up in Newport Beach this past Saturday. The Surfrider Chapter of Newport Beach ran an excellent program and we learned a great deal. In addition to the equipment for the actual event, they provided the participants with a great deal of information and insight into local issues and conditions. A nice touch to the day was the raffle for participants of gift certificates and goody bags (such as Andy won) donated by local businesses and the Surfrider Foundation. It was truly an educational and rewarding experience shared by all. And the coffee...ahhhhhhh...God Bless Starbucks for the free coffee...but I digress. Kudos go out to KC (our own zookeeper and EDA nature guide), Lori (how you doin Lori?), Sonja (my pockets are STILL full of seashells dear!), my dear brother Andrew (insert french-fry related joke here), and all EDAs who participated in in like ventures near their neck of the woods. Thank you all for caring and realizing that thru simple common efforts we can effect positive and meaningful change :) Pics and further details of the day will soon be gracing our EDA So Cal sites. Next time I say we tackle .....Hunnington Beach!!! ;) Take Care Angels, Jason V EDA Foundation :) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? The show is 8-11PM, on Wednesday, CBS. And check out http://www.countrycool.com/cmaawards/1999_pressart7.html for a small feature on Merle and Jewel. So, set your VCRs and enjoy! Say it ain't so. Now don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with those country people. Goodness knows they deserve to have someone as special a Jewel but, well, Jewel singing country? Geez! If I sound a little passionate it's because I almost lost a family member (my brother) to country. Luckily I borrowed his car one day and discovered that his radio buttons were programmed for a couple country stations. Well I immediately went to his home and checked the basement for pods. Long story short, I got the family and friends together for an "intervention". He denied it at first but soon came around and we got him back. The point of my story is that I don't know what I'll do if I start hearing a twang in her songs. I suppose I'd have to cross over and follow her but wouldn't that be hypocritical and wrong? I just don't know what to do. Flying is the safest way to go to Alaska in the winter. Driving via the Alaska Highway or taking the bus is *dangerous*. If you love Jewel enough to try it, please folow the following precautions. If taking the bus: bring all the money and credit cards you can. Bring all the warm clothing and blankets you own in case the bus breaks down. Be aware there's an overnight stop at the Alaska-Yukon border and the hotel is $80 a night. You *don't* want to spend the night outdoors! If driving: the Alaska Highway is *treacherous* in the wintertime, be sure to carry all the money and/or credit cards you can, plus every piece of warm clothing and every sleeping bag and blanket you own. Get your car checked out by a mechanic in advance. Be sure to tell him/her you plan to drive to Alaska in the wintertime in it. Always have a Thermos *full* of hot coffee, soup, cocoa, or whatever. Carry extra food. Be damn careful. If hitchhiking: Don't do it unless at the end you're going to marry Jewel and live happily ever after. I can't think of anything else that could ever motivate me to do something so stupid ;-0 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Sep 1999 17:47:54 EDT From: NikosSong@aol.com Subject: * Re: Jewel & CMA awards Don't worry! I don't take offense to this, probably because I am not a country fan either. I just wanted to get that out of the way so people don't think I'm going to be yelling at Bob. The point of this email is to tell Bob that Jewel has already done numerous country songs. She even mentioned on MTV one day that she would LOVE for her next album to be country. If this does happen, I will still love it, but Bob, you can't overlook the fact that she's gonna do it sometime, and has done it already! Anyone know? Thanks! Jenni ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Sep 1999 18:51:17 EDT From: Puzzled36@aol.com Subject: * Jewel Song Questions... I had a couple questions about some old Jewel songs. First of all, how come there are two exact same verses shared between the songs "Jessica" and "Emily" which go something like this: Love no longer has a house [or] Residence in flesh Religion with no temple No place to take your worship to No God for the eyes to see No fruit to lay at the feet of Jessica Both songs were written for basically the same reasons, so did "Jessica" evolve into "Emily" or vice versa or is it just shared lyrics between two of her songs? Also, in her song "Ride Away" it mentions the line "...a man needs a car and a boy needs a bike..." Now, in my small collection of angelfood, I don't have the song "Boy Needs a Bike". Is this shared lyrics as well, or is the same song, just with a different name? Anybody who knows please e-mail me privately cuz I'm curious. Spirit (and everyone else as well) -- I am truly beginning to regret my remarks. It seems that my post was the one that tipped the scale, leading to all the other negative comments concerning the Sessions taping. Sadly, I didn't mean anything by it -- I enjoyed the show, but I still feel that it was a bit of a letdown to learn Jewel and Nedra bolted at the taping's conclusion. Maybe it wouldn't have been even an inkling of a letdown if I hadn't read posts from other EDA-related events in which Jewel stayed, and interacted with the fans. Now, all I am going to say, in conclusion is this.. I don't know what the cause behind her departure was.. Perhaps she was tired (I mean, she just finished her Tour), didn't feel well, or just wanted some true Solace.. Whatever the case, we were all invited to a very special evening, and it was rather grand -- and none of our opinions of the evening should be clouded by not getting to meet Jewel after the show. Nor should we let this topic run ad infinitum throughout the List, for then our List becomes just like all the rest, instead of the remarkable Gathering of wonderful Souls it has become..
