I talked to everybody here in Florida. With the exception of a couple of bad hair days ..."we are all ok ..." The storm never got within 100 miles of the coast. We had a lot of beach erosion and trees down. The worst damage I've seen was to the mainstreet pier in Daytona Beach which is now 150 feet shorter. It was ripped down by 30-35 foot breaking waves (that is close to 10 times the normal size). Katharine an EDA from marco Island Fl, went to "sessions" and as of 10pm sept 16th was still in NY because of lack of Airtravel to Florida. To all the Carolina EDA's, one piece of advice. If the authorities tell you to evacuate. Do so. We will be praying for ya. (Oh Joy!) Wow, you go to New York City, try to get a little early Christmas shopping done, catch a quick taping of Jewel's "Joy" holiday special at Sessions, and you get back home to find your email box overflowing with false accusations! "Obnoxious Fans?/Harris Gallery" -- my, that sounds nasty, huh? :-) For all you angels who weren't there, and are now so concerned -- LIGHTEN UP, FRANCIS! ;-) Nothing happened. Jewel was somewhat bored, and the sedate folks sitting in front of the stage area couldn't hope to hold her attention between sets. As the evening wore on, the retakes mounted and Jewel's concentration waned, she started playing around (although very little compared to most any other time I have seen her before). Eventually, she loudly gargled with water, openly double flipped off someone after a screwup necessitated another retake, used several unique "holiday" words and finally turned to talk to the only lively folks in the audience (aka, the Harris Gallery) who were sitting behind the guitarist and xylophone sections. My only two comments were innocent comments to Jewel, who had turned around and begun talking to our section! First, after she asked how we were doing in back of the stage, someone commented about the view of the back of her head... I simply reassured her that it was a very lovely back of a head to view :-) Next, after Jessie, Derrick and "Bad Bad Sue" HARRISon tagged teamed Jewel with amusing comments during a break or two, I had to plead my innocence to Jewel that THIS TIME, indeed, I had done nothing to encourage them. Of course, the fact that they were sitting two seats to my left, right and directly in front of me created, shall we say, CIRCUMSTANTIAL EVIDENCE against me. The "retarded" comment came from another young man behind us, and well, even though it wasn't that obnoxious, I didn't find it very funny, either. (Which should have immediately tipped everyone on this list that there was no Harris Family involvement.) It didn't appear he was from the list. Now for a few things I did NOT do: I did NOT bring Woody the Plywood Cow to the taping as I did at Storytellers and Woodstock. Thus, Jewel was not asked to sign the other end of our little plywood buddy. I did NOT stand on a chair, sing along whatsoever or go anywhere the Sony studio staff did not want me to go. I did NOT catch on fire, fall a considerable distance or attempt to play any musical instruments in the studio until after the show. No Harrises were harmed during the filming of this show and Jewel had no complaints with me at any time. So, please suspend this witch hunt and rest assured that Jewel was treated with utmost kindness, love and respect. In fact, things were so quiet that I suspect the audience came periously close to putting her to sleep this time... A few bizarre things DID happen, but do they get reported? NOOOOOOO. For example, Eric "Crashboy" Montas was standing in line outside the studio before the show, and a fouled softball from a downtown ballpark hit him squarely in the... *ahem* Let's just say that Eric was picked up off the sidewalk by Sony staff and permitted to enter the building in front of everyone else (but at what cost?!? ouch!) Later, Eric just missed a subway train, smacking the closing glass doors like a bug on a windshield. The conductor (and many irate New York subway passengers) had just "insisted" that I remove my foot from the door and let the NY public transit system resume its normal schedule, and Eric was the only one not to make a successful mad sprint down the stairway. But the story has a happy ending as we found Eric at the bar with our other EDA friends, waiting on us. Oh, the wonders of a $20 NY cab ride! Of course, it was great seeing lots of EDAs before, during and after the taping. We did the pizza thing beforehand (maybe 15 of us), then hit the usual bar in the village afterward (no Steve or band there this time as Jewel's supporting musicians all seemed to be local New Yorkers for the album and TV special). Sean Hooks showed up, and confirmed the presence of the second and third Horsemen of the Apocolypse (the first was him joining in our "Make Sean Hooks a Happy Camper" promotion at Bearsville this past summer, the second joining us this night and the third that he and I finally agreed on something Jewel-related). Of course, this also lends credibility to armageddon theories surrounding the year 2000. * uh-oh * One final item of interest: Jewel announced that proceeds from an upcoming single version of "Life Uncommon" will benefit HGH's Project Clearwater, which is an effort to help underdeveloped areas of the world filtrate drinkable water for their communities at reasonable cost and with little ongoing maintenance required. This is a FANTASTIC idea, and I personally think that Nedra, Jewel, the record label and the rest of the HGH staff are doing a wonderful thing by setting this up. I'm sure we'll hear more about it very soon. If I got this information wrong, my apologies, but Jewel had her back turned to me when she said it! :-) I hope this puts everyone at ease, as I certainly prefer to be judged, juried and executed solely on my own antics... I think it would be really great, if we get a concert of Jewel before this year ends in Europe. I think it would be a great way to finish of this year. So we can only hope and pray that our wish will be granted, and that Jewel will head for europe to do one concert more this year before the next century starts. I wished i could be at the Session programme, it would have been great to hear the christmas tunes of jewel's new album and the song the Face of love must have been really beautiful sung by nedra & jewel. Point (1) LIGHTEN UP OUT THERE IN EDA LAND! It was a joke post. Which I thought was quite clear when I said she punished this behavior by making us stay late and listen to a solo set of music ... now think for a minute .... why would that be a punishment? Point (2) JEWEL LOVED IT! She never once seemed actually upset by their actions. More to the point, as Harris said, by the end of the show the only people she paid attention to was the Harris Gallery. Don't believe me ... then send Alan a very large lump sum payment (of the house buying size) for the home video he shot of the entire show and you'll see for yourself. Point (3) JEWEL SEEMS TO LIKE BANTER, when from a small audience and when appropriate ... which was actually what happened at Session, Storytellers and Unplugged. Think of Jewel's sense of humor for a minute -- which is apparently much more developed than some list members. [Wow ... go on with your bad self Rob!] Point (4) COPYRIGHT/TRADEMARK As the person who developed and coined the phrase "HarrisGallery" I now claim all rights to it's use. Future use should come with the (tm) symbol and royalty payment to me. I will accept a public kind word about Dennis in leiu of payment. I have about 50 tapes that I need to get rid of. If any of you are interested in expanding your angelfood collections write me and I can send you a list of the shows that I have. I will trade them for the cost of the tape and shipping, which will end up being about $3 per tape. They are all Type II tapes. I have a lot of shows starting from about 1994 through the beginning of 1998. Also, to all the people I'm doing trades with, I'm really sorry I've gotten back to almost none of you since I got back from vacation, but there were problems with the new computer(I'm writting from a friends computer now.) It's about Sessions, in my opinion it was pretty lame. Perhaps the "brisk" walk I took to get there made me too tired to enjoy it, or maybe it was my horrible seat position (I could only see her right leg), I'm not sure. It kinda of reminded me of all the droll Christmas performances I had to attend every year at my private school, except this one had an exceptional lead vocalist :o) People are complaining about the comments made from the Peanut (Dennis being the kid with the dust cloud) gallery, but I welcomed them. It initiated the funny, interactive Jewel, thanks you guys. Oh, I must mention how I was able to attend the show seeing as I didn't even reply to the invite. Well, I decided to meet my fellow EDAs at Ray's Pizza since I've missed them so, and I was "in the neighborhood." While the others were scarffing down their pizzas like the wild animals they are, it was brought to my attention that someone's (Pete's) guest hadn't shown up. A possible way in. Woohoo! It turns out that while waiting in line, Pete's guest showed up. Luckily I had already met a really nice woman named Anna who's daughter was the script writer for the show. She had two tickets but her friend was ill which left one up for grabs that I so gratefully recieved. While on line though, her daughter came and swooped her off to Front Row Land leaving me behind to wallow in my own bliss. This about covers my whole Sessions fiasco besides one minor detail which I can't seem to remember. For everyone that went to the, um, establishment on 11th (so on and so forth) can you guys please tell me how I got from my chair, to the corner of some street that wasn't even near the, um, establishment. Any help is appreciated. Oh and um, thanks John and Steve... I think. I don't know, I was a little offended by this post. So what if you couldn't see her well? So what if you couldn't get her autograph? So what if you couldn't ask her questions? So what if none of the EDAs got shot on camera? The point of the invitation was to offer us a chance to listen to her perform. I mean, it's about the music, right? Anything else is a bonus. I'm sure that there are plenty of people out there who've never heard Jewel live and who would have given anything to be at Sessions that evening. Not to 'see' her but to have the opportunity to listen to her gorgeous voice. Jewel sang beautifully and the arrangements were incredible. To say that the evening sucked because of the limited contact is just a wee bit selfish and petty--in my opinion. I mean, they never advertised it as anything other than it was. This was not a 'hang with Jewel' situation, question and answer session or autograph tour. PBS was taping a show and they were kind enough to say we could sit in on that. Personally, I think that it was rude to have stood up and moved about during the taping when, before they started, they specifically said not to stand unless it was an absolute emergency. Every re-take costs them money and PBS lives on donations, folks. Public funding. And as much as we like it, I'm sure Jewel doesn't dig re-takes. So you were putting her out as well. As far as getting to talk to her afterwards, that's another thing I don't think any of us have the right to complain about. When it happens, cool. When it doesn't, oh well. She's a person, we forget that. Sure, she wouldn't be where she is today without her fans but that doesn't mean she's obligated to be at our disposal whenever we deem it 'apropriate'. That night might have been the only time I was close enough to her to ever be in a position to ask for an autograph but I have to remember .. wherever she goes, whenever she performs, there's always a legion of fans wanting to get up close and personal. I imagine that sort of thing can be exhausting, when added to the overwhelming fatigue inherent to recording, performing, acting, interviewing, PR tours, etc. Let's not be selfish, okay? Yes, it'd be nice to get an autograph. Yes, it'd be nice to get a picture. Yes, it'd be nice to ask a question or two. But is it really worth running her into the ground? I, myself, don't think so. Storytellers might have been more fulfilling when it comes to interaction with Jewel. But this was not Storytellers and was never presented as such. To discount the evening because of it, you really have to examine your motivations for going. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #558 ***************************
