Well, I'm back from my wonderful trip to Florida to find 458 new messages from the list in my box. I actaully managed to sort through them all. See, I was vacationing in Disney World, and was hoping to keep up with my e-mail at the internet terminals in Innoventions at Epcot. But Innoventions was being renovated. Now I'm back home in New York, and I've come home to 1000 new mail messages. Oh well. It's going to take a while to catch up. The Angelfood request was for if anyone has any recordings of either the 7/24 Jones Beach show, or the 8/27 Tampa show. If you do, please respond privately. I'll gladly send you a blank tape. I'm sorry, but I don't yet have anything to trade. Anyway, the highlight of my trip to Florida was of course the Tampa concert. I bought tickets 20 minutes after they went on sale, and I ended up with what were absolutely great seats. I had seats 3 and 4 in balcony box A, which is on the left side when facing the stage. The seats were very close (almost right above the stage), so I should have some great pictures (I easily used up a roll of 40)... if any of them come out. Lighting conditions always make it difficult to take pictures at concerts. If anyone wants copies, my camera place gives me a free 2nd set. I can also scan them starting next week. School starts again, so I'll have free access to a scanner. :-) Once again though, no one checks for cameras at the door. Fortunately there are no security guards even near the boxes, so I got away with it. What I did think was funny is that I had my camera out and was taking a picture at the exact moment they brought up the lights on the audience, and after I finished taking the picture, a security guard on the orchestra level was staring at me. Moments later, he started walking across the concert hall. I thought he was going to come up and take my film away or something, but he didn't. I got there nice and early. No one was allowed in until 7:30, but I just walked in at 6:30. It took then 20 minutes to throw me out. All I got to see was some people fixing some seats on the orchestra level, which I saw break again once the people who sat there showed up. Anyway, I won't bother with the setlist, as I see others have gotten to it, but I will say that it was an amazing concert. I thought that Jewel interacted more with the audience than she did at Jones Beach (the one other Spirit tour show I attended), and she was much more, in her own words, "frisky." Of course this could have something to do with TB holding 2500 while Jones Beach holds 14000, but nonetheless it was nice to be so close for such an amazing show. The size and intimacy of the theatre of course allowed her to be more friendly and interactive with the audience than at an ampitheatre such as Jones Beach. Steve Poltz did a great opening act. He was funny. He usually mentions local baseball... but I went to a game at Tropicana Field when I was down there. That place was like a tomb... are those of you in Tampa even aware there's a professional baseball team (if you can call them that) in the area? Perhaps he's better off not mentioning the Devil Rays - they don't seem to have a wide fan base. When they play guess the attendance, not only do you have to give a number, but you have to name the fans. :-) He did get quite a response at Jones Beach when he mentioned David Cone's perfect game. Of course, the first thing he did before he started singing was have a beer. ("Guinness... It's not just for breakfast anymore.") His microphone stand was interesting, I actually didn't notice that the wire wrapping around it led to nowhere until Jewel mentioned it later on. I thought that was funny. Jewel's set was absolutely amazing. She was full of energy and sang a great set and interacted with the audience, as I said before, much more than at Jones Beach. I read of some of you wishing for a concert where it was all EDAs who would just sit and enjoy in quiet. This show was the exact opposite. Jewel had some funny comments about it. People would scream at the top of their lungs. After one such scream, she said "Is she OK? Someone call the police. That was bloodcurdling!" After the first couple of songs, she talked about the screaming. She said (in all happiness... there was not agressiveness in her voice) "OK, calm down... the least you can do is be quiet. I'm trying to sing a song up here!" I wholeheartedly agreed with her... I just wanted to sit back, listen, and enjoy, and at some points clap and sing along. The bloodcurdling screams are something I don't exactly think are necessary at a concert. Anyway, the setlist was perfect. There are of course some rare songs I would have liked to hear, but I know that the band may not feel completely comfortable with each and every song, and are therefore a little restricted. Of course, it was so great I can't complain, and the audience was so into it it was a really great concert experience. Sometimes concerts can definitely be not so great... I've been to concerts where half the audience walks out, where the artist is in another world, etc., but this was perfect. Jewel was completely into it, and the audience was a loud (of course I'm referring to those who let out the bloodcurdling screams) but nonetheless excited and attentive one. I'm glad I decided to go. I almost didn't, as it was my last day in Disney, but it was impossible for me to turn down another Jewel show. Hi! I still have extra copies of the Bits & Baubles CD and Target magazine if anyone is looking for them. The cost, for just the CD, would be $10.00 (8.50 cost of CD + tax, plus 1.50 for shipping). For just the magazine, it would be $3.00. If you want both the CD and magazine, the total would be $12.00. Those totals are for US residents only. If you live outside of the US, email me your address and I can check and see what your total would be. Let me know if you want the CD and/or mag, and I'll let you know where to send the payment to! Well it would seem that Aussie EDAs don't get much, but at least we don't get nothing. I was flipping thru the Foxtel magazine for September for all the specials on Channel V for the month and found on Sunday 12 @ 8:30 EST - 10:30 EST on Channel V on Foxtel there is a 2 hour special. I don't know about Galaxy or Austar, as I don't have them but it's worthwhile having a geezer. I'm Claudia from Italy and this is the first time i post something on this list. Al, i totally agree with you about MTV criticizing Jewel but since i'm a big fan of Lauryn Hill too i just wanted to say that she never said 'I'd rather have an abortion than have a white person buy my album'....that's just something the press invented and she felt very disappointed and hurt by this statement the press invented. ....just to make sure nobody else will think Lauryn Hill is racist...she's a great singer and a great person. Love Claudia p.s. Is there any other Italian EDA on this list? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Aug 1999 06:27:59 -0400 From: Mike Connell Subject: * Jewel/Storytellers repeat tonight!
