So when she gets depressed, and feeling like she's not making a difference, she can look back on it and have proof that she's on the right track, it's just gonna take some time. >> Same thing happened to me. There were a buncha kids behind me making fun of RR, which I didn't really mind cause I didn't like them much either, and they started making fun of Steve too, tho not as badly, cause he actually WAS funny(Line of the night: When Steve said he's going to play a song called 'Why you goin out with that Gold Gym's Guy?', one of the kids behind me quips 'Hell I know every word to the song now, and I've never heard it!'), but when Jewel started playing, all of them were quiet as they could be, I didn't hear a peep from any of them the rest of the night. BTW, I was SO proud of Birmingham for showing such a good crowd! It wasn't a sellout, but the lower levels of Oak Mtn looked full, and some of the upper was full, and the crowd was completely into Jewel's set all night long. But you could tell she lost some people when she played some of her unreleased stuff. Me and my friends were standing while she was playing and she started playing Love Me Just Leave Me Alone, and he looked at me and kinda frowned and sat down, and I told him 'No, this is a GOOD song!'. But the crowd was a lot bigger, and vocal than I expected, and Jewel had them all in the palm of her hand all night long! Thanks Jewel, PLEASE come back soon!!!!!!!!!! It's the one that has a blurry picture of some lady doing a crossword puzzle on the cover, and it says "No more boring fashions, let the games begin!", and at the bottom it says Part 2 Fall 1999. It's a folding ad, and it has 2 pictures of Jewel; one of them she is singing and she has a black dress on with her guitar, and the other one is her with a red shirt with a black botton shirt over it, and she is singing and has her blue guitar...they're pretty good pictures, but there's writing over them too, just so you know. ttyl Laura laura282@juno.com :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Aug 1999 22:50:20 -0700 (PDT) From: Elana Subject: * "Ride With The Devil" info for Toronto Film Fest... hi everyone, here is some info on "Ride With The Devil" which will be featured at the... I just came from the West Palm show, and there was a guy sitting about two rows in front of me in section 4... Row ::thinks:: F? ... Nonetheless... A guy with very short hair kept yelling out "CARNIVORE!" and knew all the lyrics when she DID play said song... As well as Love Me Just Leave Me Alone... I was wondering if he was an EDA. Contact me if this applies to you.... Well. The show was appealing to me... Muchly so.... Steve Poltz cracked me up with his zany antics and wacky hilarity... Star Wars song... Heh. Yeah. Jewel opened with Near You Always.... Played (Wow...) Carnivore, LMJLMA, Cold Song, Down... Encore was Absence of Fear, God Exists Quietly from ANWA, and Chime Bells. During God Exists Quietly, something exploded onstage and she looked extremely surprised but twas amusing... And during YWMFM, Poltzie sang his "dude lyric"... (Stab the yolk with my g-ddamn fork, I can't believe she's taking me to court...")... And during Hands, Jewel kept improvising... "If I could tell the world just one thing it would be that I just went surfing/That I have a bit of a belly/That Steve Poltz does NOT have a belly, show them your belly Steve/That this is the last show on my tour..." Those were the highlights, in my personal opinion anyway... Someone catch the setlist? Well I JUST walked in the door from the concert. Traffic was terrible. It only took me 30 minutes 2 get up there and it took an hour and a half 2 get back home! N-E-Wayz, I woulda drove farther if i had 2. Great concert! And all that hype about hurricane dennis, the weather was great except 4 the heat. OK I didnt like Rusted Root and i coulnt understand a word he was saying so i just skipped his set. BUT Steve Poltz was really good. Ive never heard him b4, but hes really talented, i dont know n e 1 who can actually do things and make it look good while drinking, and drinking, and drinking..... This is his set-list: 1. Kiss My Ass 2. Dont know the title of this 1 but it was about a chair.... 3. Golds Gym Guy Song 4. Everything About You 5. Silver Lining 6. Dont know the name of this 1 either but it was about hockey 7. ABC's song 8. Little Red Corvette w/ the girl from Rusted Root 9. Star Wars song He didnt play 4 nearly long enough though, He only played about 30-45 minutes and Rusted Root (which i didnt like at all) got like an hour, i think they shouldve reversed or something. Oh-well, then came Jewel.......... What can i say, she was fantastic, i think she sounds much better in person than she does on her CD. Im just at a loss 4 words, i sang every song but 2 and the people sitting next 2 me were like wow u must really like jewel, it was kinda funny. OK well i cant really think of n e thing else 2 say about jewel except that she was great and i loved seeing her so ill give u the set-list: 1. Near You Always 2. Deep Water 3. Whats Simple Is True 4. Hands, on this song she sang the intro like 4 different ways, 1st was "if i could tell the world just 1 thing it would b that i have a little belly", then she sang "if i could tell the world just 1 thing it would b that steve poltz doesnt have a belly" and he showed us his stomach. then of course since we were the last show she sang, "if i could tell the world just 1 thing it would b that this is the last show of my tour" by this time it was getting old and she finally sang it the way it was supposed 2 b 5. Jupiter 6. YWMFM-of course steve had 2 sing his version 2 (stab the yolk w/ my god damn fork, cant believe ur taking me 2 court) then sfter he sang his version jewel sang it the right way and when it came 2 the chorus her and steve were singing cheek 2 cheek. 7. I dont know what the name of this song is. 8. Cold song-which i think is like the cutest song 9. Carnivore 10. Barcelona 11. Life Uncommon-this 1 sounded kinda gospely the way she sang it, but i liked it kinda cute and different 12. Foolish Games 13. Down So Long 14. Down 15. She said this 1 was a new song that she had just written the chorus 2, so she made up the versus as she went along 16. LMJLMA 17. WWSYS-this was THE BEST SONG of her entire performance, she did a little dance and scatted, and then at the end she did the guitar mimicking, which was pretty cool. ENCORE 18. Absence of Fear 19. Chime Bells-never heard her yodel b4 except on tape and i couldnt really hear the tape so this was a real treat. Well I'm really tired so im gonna go 2 bed now Luv-ya, Buh-Bye Heather ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Aug 1999 02:00:40 EDT From: Sokooletc@aol.com Subject: * Jewel Review In West Palm Beach! This will probably be one of many but I have to give my two cents about it. I've been waiting since 1995 when I first saw Jewel play on Duets with Melissa Etheridge to actually be able to see her live. I missed my first opportunities when I was forced to move to Florida from New York. But what I'm proud to say "It was well worth the wait"!!!!! It's about two hours since the concert has ended and I'm still at a loss for words except for INCREDIBLE!!! I have never been to a better show in my life. And it's not just a Jewel thing, I sincerely mean, I have never seen anything better. To start off, Rusted Root was really great. I was a vague listener of them, but not any more. I hope to buy more of there albums soon. Steve Poltz, of course, was amazing as usual. I went to the concert with my younger brother who doesn't even listen to this type of music and he even remarked how entertained he was by Steve. Then the Jewel show began. She said how she was feeling "Frisky" tonight and I think that's how she played the concert and the audience, more flirtatous and fun with a lot of rock and roll. When she sang Hands she changed the words to say "If I could tell the world just one thing it would be, that I have a little belly", and rolled with that and said how Steve doesn't have a belly and she wasn't like the other divas who work out 20 hours a day every day. What really freaked me out was Nedra, Jewels' mom as you all know, was actually in the audience like a regular fan. She even sat further back than I did. She walked down the aisle, and I think she took everybody by suprise because she kind of came out of nowhere and sat in the center section about 20 to 30 rows back. Also the lead singer to Rusted Root was roaming the crowd just hanging out. Anyway, the concert kept on and became even more and more filled with suprises. She performed two new songs to which I don't know (so if anyone knows please e-mail me) and a few favorites. The real suprises were the little things going wrong with the stage. First something fell off the lighting equipment, but I don't think it was a light and it wasn't near Jewel, in fact I don't even think she was aware of it because she was just talking at the time and didn't even stop to look. Then during her encore performance while she was reading her poem SOMETHING LITERALLY BLEW UP! Again thank god nobody was hurt, and Jewel wasn't even near it, but it sparked up and was pretty loud and was on fire and spitting sparks. Then after she was finished and had already walked off stage some not so bright fan tried to grab, I think it was, a pic from the mic stand and was gang tackled by a very large man that resembled a football player and was thrown clear off the stage. I guess he was really hurt because they didn't even go after him once he fell, I guess they figured he was hurt enough. To sum it up it is beyond any rating I could possibly give it, and if I had more thumbs I would put each one straight up in the air. I wish there was something I could have as a way of remembering this great experience besides the actual sights and sounds. I was so mezmorized that I didn't get to meet any other Jewel fans. If there were any other Jewel fans that went to the WPB concert please e-mail me, I had some questions about certain occurrances at the concert. Also if anyone has tape as well of the concert I would give you my right arm for it, except I'll probably still be attached to it cause I need it for work. I was gonna bring this big poster sized sketch to see if I could have gotten an autograph on it but I was afraid of getting it ruined, not to mention it was highly unlikely. So there it is. There were alot more highlights I just figured I was rambling on and this post was gettin long enough. It's a shame the concert ever ended and I wish she was playing again tommorrow. Thanks for reading and please e-mail me if you were at the concert. The Artsy Angel, Keith "I won't be held down, I won't be held back, I will lead with my faith". What are y'all complaining about, here in Europe, it's just the same, and though I'd like some more Jewel around here you have to remember about the rest of the world, what about South America, Eastern Europe, A big part of Asia, Russia Africa, the Middle East, they don't even have concerts, TV coverage must be around 0 too. Luckily I got the Jupiter single from a fellow Dutch EDA who is now in America (Thanks a lot Lot), but I've never seen the Video Either, I've only seen DSL like 2 or 3 times, And I had to travel like 300 miles to see Jewel in Hamburg Germany, and we went on for 200 miles to see her in Berlin. So please stop complaining, and just support Jewel by being nice to her at concerts, spread angelfood for free and let others know about Jewel. That'll do a lot more for you than just plain complaining.
