I was reading the year old (thanks Mike for correcting me) biography of Jewel called "Angel Standing By" and it has some interesting things to say about us EDA's. Read on and find out more... "Put very simply, Jewel's fans love her. And thanks to the international reach of the Internet, she has an on-line fan club mobilized under the moniker Everyday Angels. The club appropriated its name from Jewel's I can do anything anthem I'm Sensitive: [last stanza of the song is here, you know the part where it say we are everyday angels] Via email, Jewel fans, who have nicknames like "The Little Angel", "The Distant Angel", "The Angel who thinks too much", "The Angel Formerly Known As" etc. discuss melodies, lyrics, tv appearances, concerts, Jewel's hair colour, costume choices, and career decisions. They trade tapes [descrip. of Angelfood here] memorabilia and anything else Jewel-related. These fans come in all ages, colours and nationalities, with very little in common other than a sincere admiration for Jewel and her music. And these fans pour their hearts out. [The book goes on to describe an incident where an EDA poet met Jewel in Toronto at C'est What in the washroom and how Jewel was very nice to her and another instance where an EDA says "she (Jewel) makes me believe that maybe I could be strong emough to do that too..." Then it talks about Jewelstock originating from a "wish upon a star" from Anita Martin who mused, "wouldn't it be cool if Jewel did a show just for us?"] "Mike Connell and Richard Chang, fans from the Woddstock area, were the point people, relaying info. to EDA's across the country. Fans established web sites and initiated a travel system (Angel Need a Ride naturally) to get people to Woodstock. T-shirts were designed, plans were swiftly made and the event eventually took on a life of its own. [more talk of Jewelstock] After the show she hung out with the several hundred fans in attendance some of whom had come from as far away as California to chat, sign autographs and pose for pictures. The book goes on to describe more of the relationship between EDA's and Jewel and it gives this quotation: "To have people idolize you is strange because it half-flatters you. You wnat to pretend that it says something about you, but if you believe the flattery, you become relative to it. Then you're only as good as your last compliment or critique" The pages this is on are from 100-103 in "Angel Standing By - The Story of Jewel" by P.J. McFarland and published by St. Martin's Griffin in New York. The ISBN number is 0-312-19827-2. The book is quite good, it goes pretty in depth about Jewel but sometimes the line of the book is a little superficial since the author never actually interviewed Jewel. Also, it tends to overemphasize all the good things that Jewel represents, in effect putting her on a pedestal as someone who can do no wrong. But overall it is a great book and if you were to buy any biography on Jewel, I would make it this one. So were any EDA's currently on the list featured in the above segments of the book? Kind of neat eh? Hope some of you enjoyed that! Hi there...hope that you're all having a good day. Anyhow, I'm fairly new to the EDA list, so I should probably introduce myself. My name is Shana Ward and I live in Cincinnati, Ohio. I look forward to meeting or at least talking to some of you....especially those of you that live in the Cincy area. Okay, my reason for writing is to ask about those free Jewel magazines that are supposedly at Target. I've been to several different stores and haven't seen them anywhere. Does anyone happen to have an extra one?? I would be more than happy to pay the shipping. If so, please get back to me. My email address is shana@your-net.com Thanks so much =) - -Shana ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #502 ***************************
