I just recently saw Jewel inn Columbus, Ohio at the Polaris Ampitheatre on Aug. 11th. I was wondering if any of you also went to this concert? I didn't write down a set list b/c I just joined this list the day after the concert and I had no idea all of this existed actually, I looked up www.jeweljk.com b/c of her having it on her big screen. I don't have much info on Jewel at all, so I guess you would't call me a HUGE fan, but her concert was by far the best I have ever seen, and I just saw NSYNC w/ a friend about two wks before I saw Jewel at the same place. I had really good seats, and she is absolutely mezmorizing on stage live, i could'nt believe it. I took a lot of pictures. I'm not sure if any of you have talked any about what all went on at this concert since I am new to this list, so I'll tell you about my experience. I got there around 6:15 or so. I bought her World Tour shirt, now i'm wishing i would've bought her tour program book or whatever that everyone is talking about..but anyways. I walked around some w/ my friend and saw some people dressed as Indians, and well as hippies. Then we went back to our seats. Rusted Root came out around 7:00. I thought they were pretty good. I wasnt too familiar w/ their music, only one song....but i found them to be very talented. The lead singer though i thought seemed to be in kind of a bad mood for some reason...maybe it was just me. Then Steve came out. He was dressed really well. He was wearing an orange long sleeve shirt a/ blank pants and a black jacket, but he later took that off. He talked to us a little bit about Ohio, and asked us if we knew about Ludlow Falls b/c i guess he had a good time there once. He had a picnic area set up, and he said that he was eating a picnic in Columbus, Ohio. He then noticed this one girl that was close to the front, and he had said that she was clapping longer than anyone else in the audience, and he noticed her again, and kept on saying how cute she was, so he invited her up on stage w/ him. He sat down on the picnic area w/ her and had her hold is microphone while he sang this song that had something to do w/ kissing him or something...so at the end of the song, this girl leaned over and kissed him like 2 times on his mouth! He rolled over on his back, and kicked his legs in the air, and said that she had guts, then she got off the stage. I was taken back on that one, i didnt know if that was staged or what. He also invited a photographer up there w/ him, and had him pour him a drink, and was holding the cup up to his mouth so he could drink it. He seemed really, really nice, and he sang a lot of songs. I remeber him singing the Prince song w/ Liz from Rusted Root, as well as the ABC's song, and he sang a lot of others, but i cant quite remember. Then Jewel came out...that was really cool. She sang basically the same stuff that i keep on seeing on everyone's set lists from other places. She didnt talk w/ the crowed as much as i had thought she would, but i do remember her asking us how we were, and telling us how she was feeling frisky, and looked over at steve and commented on how good he looked in his orange shirt, and he said she looked good as well. She had the small strainds hair from the sides of her head pulled back w/ a little butterfly clip. She was wearing a black tank top that had a small Tommy Hilfiger flag on it, as well as those black pants that are shorter though than pants, lol.....i cant think of the name of those kinds of pants at the moment, as well as black high sandal type of shoes. Anyways, she was talking w/ Steve about how she met him at the Innerhouse Coffeeshop, and how one day he came up to her and said...hey, could i have a cup of coffee. And that she just gazed at him kind of star struck, and just kind of kept looking at him...(she kept on doing diff. impressions w/ her face that were really funny as she is talking about this story) and then he said again, "could i have some coffee" and then she just kind of looked up at him and said, "uhh...i sing" and she did this really really funny impression on her face. Then they said some other stuff, but i wasnt paying that much attention b/c my camera ran out of film and i was trying to reload it in the dark as they started singing Steve's version of You Were Meant For Me, then she sang her version. Then later on she left the stage, and my friend was in a huger hurry to leave so we wouldnt be stuck in traffic, and we leave our seats and next thing we know she comes back out...so we have to walk up and re show our tickets, she she then does her encore presentation. She then kind of came out into the audience and people were holding her hand, stuff like that, and she then saw a girl holding up her poetry book, so she grabbed it really quickly and asked us all, "what would you like me to read" and some girl in the front yelled, "PAGE 94" and before Jewel asked that question she had asked...I'm trying to find a certain poem...i guess she couldnt find it, so when she said, Page 94...she said, ok, i guess i'm going to read page 94 b/c this chick up here wants to hear it. It turned out to be the poem "Lost" which i really like. Jewel had said she had written that poem a long time ago. So she read the poem after she asked the audience to be quiet, and then yodeled and waved to the crowd and left. The band was going crazy and steve was jumping up and down, he was a great guitar player. He was throwing yellow things off of his microphone into the crowd, and the drummer was handing out his drum sticks. I wasnt quite close enough to get any of these things though. But all and all, it was a great concert, sorry this is such a long e mail. Let me know if any of you were at this concert as well. Thank you. Well, here is my interpretation of the Milwaukee show, the events around it, and the wonder that is Jewel:) Prepare for a novel... BEFORE THE CONCERT... I got to Marcus Amphitheater around 7:00 with my mother and bro. I'm so high off of excitement - and I promise that's all I was high on - that I could pretty much fly. So, we park and we get through the gates, and my brother insists on some pictures in front of the giant instruments - "Look, mommy! They're big!" Afterwards, we're walking and I see the table where you leave canned foods, but AAAH! I forgot to bring any:( I see two people at the table, though, and I wonder if I should know them, you know? From other posts I've read, I'd gotten the impression that EDAs often work the table, so I kept that in mind. Ok, so as soon as I saw JMerch, I sprinted with my hard-earned Dairy Queen dollars to buy whatever I could (Note to anyone that will ever consider working at Dairy Queen - DON'T! I repeat: DO NOT WORK THERE! If hell ever did freeze over, you'd be at Dairy Queen!!! Oh, sorry if I've just offending anyone behind Dairy Queen - just my opinion:) Anyway, as I'm walking up the ramp towards the concession with my family, I see some girl with sidewalk chalk writing a big "M", but I keep walking...until it occurs to me that, "Hey! That could be my e-mail peep, Mandy!" And, low and behold, when I went back down there, it was! Well, at first, I saw that it said "Mandy loves Steve Poltz" and then, at the side, "Hi Nik Perez - my peep"...so, you know, I put two and two together;) Anywho, she introduces me to her crazy friend...Kate, right? Yeah, I think that's it. Slowly, I begin to meet more and more EDAs, which is so cool, but apparently there's a lot of EDAs that never post...START TYPING PEOPLE! I met: Mandy - hilariously cool! I've gotten to know her through e-mails and she has this ora of positivity and hyperness. She's my bud! Kate - Wow...she should really let go, you know. Don't be so shy;) Nah! She's rad...my brother was completely impressed, also. Jay J. - He's so nice! He's very easy to talk to, and you could tell he's always willing to help; Want a copy of his angelfood? No problem! Need a ride to a concert? Sure! Need a kidney? Just call Jay J.! He's awesome, even though the punk got to see three of her concerts! Christine - She seemed lovely...I have to say 'seemed' though 'cause she's kinda reserved, I think. E-mail, Christine! I think I'm safe in saying that she's a beautiful person, though...I have a whim. Al/Adam - I really liked him. We didn't talk much, but he seems REALLY cool. He was funny...he cracked me up when we were getting our pictures taken:) You need to e-mail, too! Drop me a note. Oh, and there was his friend...don't know that I got his name, though - my bad. Jessica/Emily - I liked how excited they got while watching the tour buses! Once again, I liked 'em. Jessica was the EDA out of the two, though, I believe. Doesn't matter, though, they both had great energy. Amanda/Bria - awesome!!! Ok, so they aren't technically EDAs, but they still deserve a mention. They let me talk to them way up at the front by the stage until the security guard booted my butt:( Matt Sullivan - I HAVE NO IDEA!!! WHERE WERE YOU!?!?! Oh, by the way, I went up to the people at the canned food table, and they thought I was some kind a freak. No, I shouldn't have known them, I guess! Their names were Diane and Tom, and they were EXTREMELY nice, though. I made a donation, and apparently I fed, like, 77 children, which is AWESOME!!! Hmmm...ok, so then my brother came to meet "my people" and dazzled them all with his intimate story of the trials of having penis piercings...yeah, that's right, penis piercings. You know, it's just like him to steal the show:) Anyway, I finally go in and wait for it all to begin... I had row N seats left of center - the red section, Matt! Oh, MATT SULLIVAN!?!?! Was I in your same row!?! That'd be weird stuff, eh? RUSTED ROOT... To be honest, I didn't hear much of their set 'cause I was like a kid on those dip n' lick sticks - HEY!!! Remember those!?!?! Those rock!!! Ok, anyway, I did hear that one cool song...that simmee in da way song from the radio - that was COOL:) Ok, ok, I know those aren't the real lyrics, but work with me people. All in all, even though I couldn't understand their lyrics, I think they did pretty well! STEVE... He's da man! He's always so funny! He sang "Kiss My Ass", "The Chair Song", "ABCs Of Love", and other crowd pleasers. I was taping his set when some EVIL woman came and told me to shut it off and later made me give her my tape when she saw me using it again - I don't catch on quickly, I guess:) She later told me that Jewel's bodyguard had the tape and that I had just committed a federal offense, but I could've cared less what she said, 'cause she was wickedly mean. My drunken brother had a few choice words for her, which made her hover over us throughout the concert, but oh well! Anyway, after Steve won over the audience, sang Milwaukee it's very own song - 'bout cute Milwaukee girls and cute Milwaukee boys. JEWEL... I love her. I just simply love her. Every song she did, I loved her more. She told us she was "feeling frisky" and did the manly version of "You Were Meant For Me", sang her new song, and "Carnivore" (in which some of you might have heard me with my high-pitched scream - it hurts to get up into that octave, man. A lot.) Of course, I was holding up my "Carnivore" sign the whole time, lovin' her more. She sang that "Wolf & Dolphin" song, too. All in all, she kicks ass. I don't care what anyone ever says about her; they can call her a bitch, a sell out, or anything else, but I will always look to her as a hugely inspiring voice, more than just musically. Watching and listening to her, it just makes you wanna go out and make a difference. To live your own dreams and experience how beautiful life is. It's very hard to put into words, really. Kind of a cool note: my brother's in a punk rock group. The only band he likes that's even close to being mainstream is KISS. He's pretty cynical, but heavily into music. He's been to thousands of concerts. He said by the end of the concert that he's now a Jewel fan. "I didn't expect much, really," he said, "but you can just hear her passion and talent. That's a true artist." :) Behold the power of Jewel. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 04:14:52 EDT From: Emilie0278@aol.com Subject: * kiss your ass + soundcheck + ....
