Start at the begining...(A very good place to start!) I woke up early, (Sunday the 15th.) Excited for the day ahead of me. I was spending it with 2 of my closest friends, and seeing Jewel. We got to the Mall of America, and well, the seats were full up front, but we were in front on the left side (Next to where they were taking questions) Jewel came out, and was on a cell-phone...disappointing at first, but I figure someone special (Or someone really dumb...Ahem...Barnes and Noble lady!) I was there with my guitar (Scarlet) which is my first, Only, and favorite guitar of all times, hoping if Jewel was doing autographs, she would sign it for me. Ironically enough when she was up there she said: "Wow, I feel kind funny here JUST reading poetry...I should have a guitar in my hands." And guess who just happened to be the ONLY person standing in the Mall of America with a guitar....ME! So we cheered and held it up, and she looked at me! (Whoever was there...You HAD to have seen it!!! I kinda looked dumb being the ONLY person standing with a guitar in hand!) Well, she didn't read my question out of that fishbowl either! (which was..."Would you Sign my guitar"--kind of dumb question, but I REALLY wanted her to!) Anyways, then the session was over and while walking to the parking ramp, (My guitar still in hand) some guy stopped and said "Dude...(long pause)...are you Jewel" My friends and I laughed SO HARD about that one! I had this HUGE smile on my face! The concert was astounding! Played all my favorites, and we were pretty close to the stage, and that Minneapolis song...WHOA, I liked it. But I swear I've heard some of it before (Like she added a part from another song), Birthday Wishes, and Quiet Times, Yodeling, and Songs she said we wouldn't know (But all the EDA's did) Steve was way better looking than I thought!!! Ohhhh Jade is in her little dream land now! It was an AWESOME concert! I couldn't sleep at all last night! Wish you all we're here! ~*~ Jade ~*~ (The Ever Astounded Angel) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Aug 1999 13:07:54 EDT From: Mgsju@aol.com Subject: * Jewel in Rolling Stone Hi everyone! I'm sure many of you are aware of this already but Jewel is in the latest issue of Rolling Stone. It's a report on Woodstock '99 and she is mentioned in a few different articles. In addition there is a small picture of her performing on the cover. If you're thinking about buying it for any Jewel content though, you'll probably be disappointed. All told, there's only about 3 paragraphs about her in the entire issue. The cover story Woodstock '99 is a report on the three days with commentary on the artists and the crowd reaction to them. This is the little part that mentions Jewel: "Everlast does a bang-up version of Marvin Gaye's 'Trouble Man', but when Elvis Costello comes out with an acoustic guitar to play the obscure and dreadful 'Pads, Paws and Claws', the crowd gets the ominous hush you hear when your nutty uncle shows up for Thanksgiving. Jewel, or as the Twelve Tribes probably call her, Yewel, is a funfest by comparison, shaking her demurely clothed body just barely enough to keep us awake." Then there's an article called Tales from Satan's Playground written by MTV's Kurt Loder. He wrote: "It was ironic that Sunday was the day when Woodstock '99 went totally down the toilet, because the festival's final line-up was decidedly less assaultive than that of the day before (which had concluded with grand, stormy performances by Rage Against the Machine and Metallica). Brian Setzer's gorgeously fluid guitar playing, spiraling above the horn-stoked punch of his big band, actually got people dancing; and Elvis Costello, accompanied by his longtime pianist, Steve Nieve, turned in a cheery set that had them smiling as they savored his lyrics and his sinuous delivery. In addition, there was the faintly inscrutable Jewel, beautiful in black jeans and Prada platforms, who demonstrated her proclivities not only as a yodelist and certified poetess but also-and, jeez, was this unexpected-a scat singer." The last article on Woodstock that featured Jewel was Moshing and Looting by Matt Hendrickson. His mention of Jewel: "One hundred minutes was about the length of Jewel's entire stay at Woodstock. Her tour bus pulled up on Sunday afternoon; she got into a van, which drove her approximately forty yards to the stage; she played her seventy-five minute set, immediately got on her bus and left the garbage behind. Bye, Jewel-thanks for playing." Did I mention that the Jewel content was not very pro-Jewel? That's kind of why I wanted to tell you guys what was in the articles. Before you go and spend $3.00 on it just for Jewel stuff. Oh yeah, I almost forgot. She's also mentioned in an article about Kid Rock: "When drummer Eulinberg begins absently plucking the Jewel tune 'You Were Meant For Me' on an acoustic guitar, Rock just can't help himself. After emoting the first verse, he breaks out laughing. 'That's so bad,' he says. 'Anybody that puts the word PJs in a song.'" Oh well, I guess we can't all be her most devoted fans. Her 1995 ebut album, PIECES OF YOU, spent a remarkable 114 weeks on the Billboard 200, where it reached the #4 spot on the chart. Recently certified nine-times platinum by the RIAA, the album includes hit singles "You Were Meant For Me," "Who Will Save Your Soul," and "Foolish Games." SPIRIT, Jewel's second album, was released by Atlantic in November 1998 and amde its debut at #3 on the Billboard 200 chart. The album, which features the hit singles "Hands," and "Down So Long," has been certified RIAA triple-platinum and is about to hit the four million mark in U.S. sales. Jewel brings even a little more joy to the world with her all-new Christmas collection. Produced by the legendary Arif Mardin (Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, & Chaka Khan) the holiday set features the singer performing such seasonal favorites as "Silent Night," "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" and "Winter Wonderland," as well as a new Christmas-themed version of her recent hit, "Hands." In addition, it includes an inspirational rendition of "Ave Maria" along with a stunning "Gospel Medley," which encompasses the spiritual standard "Go Tell It On The Mountain," the singer's own "Life Uncommon," and the Bette Midler staple, "From a Distance." Things aren't what they once were... heck, things weren't what they once were at the time I joined the list, over a year ago, and they've only become less so. I really don't feel like part of a community here, anymore. The EDA Cover Tape #2 is coming, and I thought that would rekindle the (I almost can't type this word) SPIRIT of the list... but it still now feels like an empty sea of people who don't think of Jewel (or, indeed, much of anything) in the same way I do, and don't want to talk about it. Too many people. Too many vaccuous and repetitive posts (sorry, it's true). Too much hero worship for this iconoclast. Too many posts every day - in the end it's this last that causes me to give it all up. I know that over 200 of you (maybe WAY over 200... I'm not sure how many there are these days) will be totally uninterested (perhaps relieved, even, a little, a few of you?) by my departure, but I hope that at least... five or six angels will be sorry to see me go. If that's the case, please email me privately and let me know what you think of me. I've poured a lot of time and a lot of myself into this list. Let me know if I've ever said what you thought, or if you think that I see Jewel the way you do. Thanks, kids.
