It bashes her a lot, calling her whiny, and it could get lengthy. Jewel saved by a snappy guitarist Christina Fuoco _______________________ Clarkston- "Quiet" and "Peaceful" were the themes of pop singer Jewel's concert Sunday at Pine Knob Music Theatre. Except for the performers, their instruments and a large video screen, the stage was bare. The once homeless waif turned Tommy Hilfiger-sponsered performer used spirituality as her hook, opting for a quiet stage with amps turned upward and clear plexiglass walls around the drum kit. So quiet in fact, was the concert that 2 rousing "Yee-ows!" after a series of ballads nearly scared memebers of the crowd out of their seats. Dressed in all black designer (Hilfiger) workman's outfit, Jewel at times seemed more interested in showing off her looks than her voice. The Utah-born singer mumbled through songs while grinning at the audience as she tried to win approval. (A sold-out show isn't approval enough?) When a guitar wasn't slung over her shoulder, the endlessly tugged at her pants like a pre-schooler trying to keep them from hitting the ground. At other times, Jewel growled her way through tunes, like her sassy version of "Hands" from her latest album, "Spirit". She ended the song with the annoying squeal, "Thank you, babies." The sluggish show was saved by Steve Poltz, her ex-boyfriend with whom she co-wrote "You Were Meant For Me." Pulling double-duty as Jewel's opening act (along with hippie faves Rusted Root) and guitarist, Poltz gave Jewel someone to play off. After asking the audience what it thought of Poltz, Jewel explained that she met him at a coffee house where she was working at the age of 18. Poltz provided comic relief from a bunch of inside chitchat on stage about that meeting and the stream of sappy ballads that was being served. The three-band bill was an odd one. The jam-rock band Rusted Root opened the show with its brand of relentless drum beats (think "Stomp" with electric guitars and vocalists). Poltz, touring in support of his debut album, "One Left Shoe," hit the stage second. Wearing a red-and-white-checked shirt and a cowboy hat, Poltz played heart-felt love songs such as "Everything About You" which he dedicated to a deceased friend and interspersed them with snappy tunes by his band, the Rugburns. His set ended with recently penned "The Star Wars Song," during which he invited the crowd to roar like Chewbacca. Had it not been for Poltz, Jewel's show would have spiraled into a whiny mess. The romantic relationship between the two may not have worked out, but it thrives musically. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Aug 1999 23:46:45 -0400 From: "Matt Adler" Subject: * My August 8th Jewel Concert Experience Well, I am a day late with the review (sorry) but I had to take time to review my experience. OK, so here is my story of the Aug 8th concert at Pine Knob in Michigan. I planned on leaving around 4. I had all of my friends who were coming with meet at my house at 4. Everyone was there at 4, with the exception of one, whom I was seriously considering leaving without. He finally arrived around 4:45, and we left. We arrived around 5:15. I wanted to try and get into the sound check, but there was no way of sneaking in without jeopardizing my ticket. So I waited for the gates to open. As soon as they took my ticket, I ran to the J Merch stand and bought a tour t-shirt and a "I Drink Like Poltz" t-shirt, which I decided to wear at the concert. My friends were hungry so we got some food, we found our seats, row P, and set up camp, so to speak. I had made 4 signs, "Jewel Rules!", "Play Carnivore", "EDAs", and "Steve Rocks!". I tried holding up the "EDAs" sign, to attract other members. After awhile of waiting, a man came up to me with a video camera and introduced himself. He was Derran, the camera man that is filming the behind-the-scenes stuff for the video and wanted to film my signs, along with my name. I spoke with him and asked him if there was any way he could get me backstage, and he said he didn't think so, but he could try and that he would tell the band members that I made signs. As Derran and I were talking, a fellow EDA came over to me and started talking. He told me that he saw my sign and wanted to meet me. So once the EDA and Derran left, I sat down and spoke with my girlfriend about this and that, and then another EDA approached me. She had gotten front row seats, and we talked for a little bit. She left and about fifteen minutes later, I was tapped on the shoulder by a guy with some facial hair (with a little bit of Grey in it) and a cowboy hat on it. He wanted to take a picture with my "Steve Rocks" sign. So, Steve and his girlfriend took their picture in front of my sign and he gave me a Steve pick. He moved down a few rows, along with his girlfriend, Brady Blade, the drummer, and Doug Pettibone. They danced to Rusted Root, and I found a pen, went down to them, and got their autographs. I had a quick conversation with Steve and he told me he would try and get me backstage after the show. I was really excited at this point. I went back to my seats and listened to Rusted Root. Throughout Rusted Root's act, I had several people coming up to me, asking who those people were that I got autographs from. (BTW, Brady hates his acoustic shell that he plays in) Right before Steve was about to go on, another EDA came up to me, but the cool thing was her seat was right by mine. What a great time I was having, and Jewel hadn't even come on. Steve played a great set and had really captured the audience with the chair song, a hilarious impromptu song about a guy who gave him a rose while he was on stage, and the star wars song. I was asked by a drunk man in front of me if Steve was a comedian. After Steve's set, Jewel played. Her set list (from the official sheet that I got from a Pine Knob employee) was: Near You Always Deep Water What's Simple is True Hands Jupiter You Were Meant For Me (complete with Steve's version of the lyrics) - --Solo-- Barcelona Life Uncommon Foolish Games Down So Long New Song Down Love Me Just Leave Me Alone Who Will Save Your Soul (without the kitty meow) - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Absence of Fear Angel Standing By (which she didn't play, but it was on the set list) Yodel (not on the set list was Jewel reading poetry. A fan brought her up her book and asked Jewel to read her favorite. Jewel chose Sauna. She was about to read it, but told everyone that she gets embarrassed easily when she reads poetry in front of an audience, and asked everyone to be quiet. When they didn't get quiet, she told them to get it out of their system, and then she read it) After the concert, Brady threw his sticks into the crowd, and Steve and Doug threw picks into the crowd as well. I waited for Steve to maybe let me backstage. I knew that he wouldn't, but I had to see, just in case. I was force to leave by security, and then I waited by the backstage entrance, I did see Derran, and he told me that security was real tight there (which is what Pine Knob is known for) but he will try and see if he could get me a "yellow dot pass" He told me to wait there and he would be up in about 15 minutes. I waited 10 minutes, when my friends begged for me to leave. I could have waited all night (and I should have to, since I was the driver and they were at my mercy) but I had to go. : So that was my experience. It was great! My favorite Jewel Concert yet! I recorded the concert and it came out really well and in stereo!! If anyone wants to trade, e-mail me back, please. Any EDAs who were at the concert, please e-mail me back, I need to ask you all a question. I hope all of you who have upcoming concerts have a great time! //\//\att //\dler the "thespian" angel ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #470 ***************************
