I was on the list before but left due to the amount of Emails. I have to admit my following of Jewel's career kind of faltered when i bought "Spirit" but it was reinvented when I saw "STORYTELLERS" the other night...can we say amazing!? I just was checkin out a Carson Daly site on MTV (hence the email hehehe) when I came across Jewel on the MTV Live site: http://www.mtv.com/mtv/live/livemtv/ Heres the interview for those w/o internet access: MAY 19, 1998 Jewel and her poetry. CARSON: You have written a book of poetry. One might think that these poems could potentially be new songs. Are you worried that you're giving away future material? JEWEL: No, my poetry has always been very separate from my songwriting. I need them for different reasons. My songwriting is something I do for fun. Poetry is something that I needed to get past the confused and lonely periods of my life. CARSON: When you go to put these thoughts on paper how do you distinguish them from the poetry and the song pile? JEWEL: They're just separate for some reason. I find that my poetry is autobiographical whereas my songwriting is about social situations. CARSON: Is this something you would have pursued even with no background in music? How linked are these two areas? JEWEL: Yes, I care a lotabout poetry. It's when I'm the most honest and I'm able to express myself. Poetry is an evolution of your soul rather than an evolution of your intellect. CARSON: Are you going to be touring with the book, doing readings and signings? JEWEL: I'll be doing a couple of readings. I'm nervous about the whole thing Smile always, Carolyn Airhead Angel ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Aug 1999 02:04:13 +0100 From: "Debbie" Subject: * new angelfood site CORRECT URL Hi all I mailed earlier, about my friend's angelfood trade page. I think you go buy those iron on block letters or any other ones to personalize your shirt. I don't know, I think it would be cool. The last two days have been the two of the greatest of my life, no I didn't get to meet Jewel(got to touch her hand though), but finally got to see her in person. The Buffalo show- I thought it was great(until I experienced Toronto's) It was a very rocky show. She definatley got the crowd into it, although they were kind of disrespectful during songs like AoF and I'll Follow You Down(i think that's the name, Jewel said she had only played it twice.) Before YWMFM she told about Steves alternate lyrics instead of the pot story. Aparently, Steve thought "break the yolks and make a smiley face" wasn't manly enough, so he wrote a version that went "Stab the eggs with my manly fork, I can't believe your taking me to court". Heres the setlist: Near You Always Deep Water What's Simple Is True Hands Jupiter YWMFM I'll Follow you down Morning Song Innocence Maintained Life Uncommon Foolish Games DSL Down Love Me Just Leave Me Alone WWSYS AoF You Are Not(poem) Chime Bells Toronto: This was an amazing concert, exactly how I always had envisioned seeing Jewel perform. It made Buffalo seem like trash. The crowd was much more respectful, not yelling during songs, Jewel was much funnier, and made the concert much more intimate. It was a very acoustic concert, Jewel said she didn't feel like playing songs off her albulms, so she played Carnivore, STiBTW and I'll follow you down,(as well as Dowm, LMJLMA and all those other unreleased ones she's been playing) all solo acoustic and everything i dreamed, I was so excited she played them. She also told the pot story, which was so much better than on angelfood. When we got invited down to the stage we were about a foot from her, and I actually got to touch her, when she played AoF it was amazing, the arena was completly silent and being two feet away from her made it feel as intimate as Innerchange or something would've been. I'll shutup now, because I can't express how incredible this has been. I think someone already posted the setlist, so I won't bother. If you want angelfood from Toronto, my tape turned out great, and I'm happy to make copies. Unfortunatley my Buffalo tape is bad, because the Guy behind us fought with security throughout Near You Always and Deep Water. Then i got so wrapped up in the concert, i forgot to switch the tape and it cut off halfway through FG, and I had to switch it and miss the middle of that song. So if anyone has a tape of Buffalo please help me out, I desperatley need a copy. I can't wait to see her tommorow in Pittsburgh. bye, Kyle P.S. I ended up not being able to go, cause I took my girlfriend, who had to work. My brother works as a rody at Darien Lake(lot of good he is, he can't even get backstage passes for people), but he said Jewel's plane got in to Buffalo at 8:30pm and she got to Darien Lake ten minutes before she went on stage. So if you wanted to go to the soundcheck, you didn't miss anything. I didn't write back to everybody writting to want to go, I just wanted to apologize, cause there were to many responses. Hi Courtney, What exactly would go with the song? Relax, I'm smiling, claws fully retracted, stormbringer sheathed. The answer is simple really. Simple and true. A heart as equaly in love with love. I read these posts and sometimes, just sometimes, this big kitty gets a little bit sad, a little dissapointed. Remeber the post from the girl, I can't remeber who, she was very concerned about how she looked on the TV. As were all of you, to some degree or another. Imagine what it must be like, just for a moment, to be put on a stage, your every moved scrutinized under the most critical microscope. Everyday people pass each other and think but dare not say for fear of offending or hurting anothers feelings. Yet out here it is fair game as they say. Now imagine reading that scrutiny day after day, month after month, year after year. Imagine it was you. Just a thought. Now, my review of Jupiter. Courtney, you said it did not quite fit the "Jewel" image. What is that image? Who's image is it? Yours? Theirs? No my friend(s), it was hers and hers alone and it was taken from the deepest depths of her heart, her soul and given to us without hesistation, without fear, without regret. It was given to us for one reason and one reason only. "Love". Did not the director say it was made to portray "our?" Angel in an intimate and very sensual, yet loving way. (It had that effect on me, it took my breath away. But then, that was the point wasn't it now.) (Hmmm, perhaps we've, caught her eye, just maybe) Jewel, you cannot begin to understand how much I (we) admire you. You live for your music, your art. It is your passion, your dream, your love. (well, second greatest love) Not only do we have the the honor to see great art in the making, we have the pleasure of experiencing it in such a unique and intimate way. As only you could have allowed us to do. You allow us into your art, into your heart and never once have you hesitated. Through all the years and all the critical tears, you gave and you gave and you gave and asked nothing in return. Is that not the purest definition there is for love? Jupiter was given in love. It is about love, it speaks of love, it is LOVE! In it's purest and most honest form. It is a work of love, for her love. Who will undoubtedly love her even more for this giving of herself, in love, to him. Jupiter is Jewel in her rawest, most pure state. It is the feminine within her made manifest in an exquisite and lovely way. As are quite a few of her songs. Jewel Breathes,Jewel Loves, Jewel Exists and in moments such as this she is the most beautiful expression of Love I have ever seen. (I may be a bit partial) So many of her songs speak of love. Speak of lightning and aching and simple truths realized late at night in dreams. We see them as separate but they are not. For Love flows through them all like a mighty river of emotion and passion. They are but individual paragraphs in one of the greatest love poems of all time. Each a piece of the greater whole. They speak to us of love, ageless, timeless and in depths few can even imagine. An epic story of searching, finding and loving. Oh,oh,oh yea Jewel, be still my little heart.(pretty kewel) And all these things, all these private and most sacred of things she shares. Without hesitation. For one reason and one reason only. Love. She loves and in so doing shares that love, with those she loves. If anyone knows of a more profound, more honest, truer way of sharing with another human being, let them cast the first stone and shatter the image I have just created. Anyone? Jewel, from the bottom of MY(our) heart, and the deepest reaches of MY(our) soul thank you. Thank you for caring and thank you for sharing. Thank you for being, You. Your such a jewel, did you know that? Does Anyone Know The Whole Setlist To Storytellers, and if there will be any wayto get all of those songs somewhere ????????? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Aug 1999 23:34:22 EDT From: NikosSong@aol.com Subject: * jewel's singing as a man Hmm...well, I have discovered something odd. This may have been brought up before, but I have been on the list for close to two years, and I don't remember it. Ok, anyway, in a couple of songs, Jewel sings like she's male. I just think it's kind of funny. Insignifacant, but funny. Some examples are "Race Car Driver" (I'm just a real small man in a real big car) and "Boy Needs A Bike" . There are plenty more too. I'm not saying that is anything weird, but I guess I just thought since she was a girl, her songs would be strictly "I am a girl" kind of songs. Well, this post wasn't that important, but I figured I would just say something anyway. The guitar part almost sounded the same, and the faint bassline I heard sounded like the bassline of LMJLMA that's on the DDDelight CD. Anyways, before I read that message, I was thinking... "Hmm.. Love me, Just Leave Me Alone... and Dylan. I can imagine him singing that." I went to a Dylan concert a few months ago. It was awesome... and I really could picture Dylans nasally voice going "You said you were a wiseman.. when'd they teach wisemen to shout?" Just my thoughts. I really liked her little guitar intro to the song though. I never heard her do it like that before. I thought it was awesome. I was like "damn!!! I never knew she could play like that!!" I thought it was going to be a new song, then she started singing the lyrics... but I still liked it. It's always been one of my favorite jewel rock songs.
