It's an old Jewel concert from February 1995, recorded at the 'Tinker Street Cafe', about an hour long (in three segments) and includes: Amen, Race Car Driver, Rocker Girl, Life's A Great Big Mystery Show, Deep Water, WWSYS, Sometimes It Be That Way, I'm Sensitive, 1000 Miles Away, Here When Gone, and maybe one or two others that I've forgotten. The quality isn't all that great (12kbps) but it's an interesting piece of footage, and well worth a visit for the bits between the songs as well as the songs themselves. Anyway, it's at: http://www.radiowoodstock.com/woodstock/niteclub/jewelalt.ram Enjoy! Richard List moderator note - for those that may wonder, this is the same concert that "made the rounds" on the list a while back (from the same Woodstock website). So don't get too excited abouot it being something new :-) If you haven't heard it, it's worth checking out......being it's "early Jewel" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 02 Aug 1999 14:59:24 -0500 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." Subject: * Come on you guys! I've just read about 10 posts of opinions on the Storyteller's thing. And not ONE of you had much of anything bad to say about it. I sort of think either you're holding back or those who don't think it was so awesome simply aren't posting...so maybe I'll start it with this one...Sean, help me out...I'm already predicting several things you're thinking about it, if you saw it of course. Maybe I'll touch on some of those here too. First, VH-1 needs to hire someone who knows how to merge audio with video. It's not all that hard, and you'd think some channel as big as they are could figure that out. I mean, even MTV has that part down. That wasn't Jewel's fault. Neither was the fact the only thing VH-1 showed was all 4 singles she played there, plus those 2 others. 67% singles! SO predictatable!!! I told the other 4 EDA's watching it with me that I predicted VH-1 would air every single Jewel played at that, and lo and behold. The only thing they didn't do that I thought they might was save WWSYS till the end. The other non singles were ok, although I think they could have done a better job at selecting songs...to replace the singles they aired. There were EDA's present, of course, but obviously VH-1 chose to air the show with the non-EDA's in mind. So I found it way too predictable. The YWMFM story was so long too. And of course we've all heard it, but I know some new Jewel fans watching may not have. But as another EDA already said, I think they could have edited it down some and squezed in another song or two. And took out all the commercials and aired yet another 2-3 more songs even. Then just run a solid hour of commerecials afterwards. Not that difficult, and the sponsors still get all their air time. That makes too much sense though. So I think VH-1 could have done a MUCH better job on their end of things. As far as Jewel goes...it's obvious she was sick for that taping, as has been stated before. Maybe she should have thought about postponing it then? I mean, considering her condition, she did alright, but you can tell her voice was suffering, and I'm sure was even worse after that. I think it would have been better, and smarter to wait, let her heal, then put on an even better performance, and not cause additional damage to her throat. But again, that makes too much sense. So overall I felt her voice was weaker than I had seen of her recently...most notably the 2 live shows I saw...which were a few months after that show was taped. Seeing her live, THEN seeing the VH-1 show gave me some basis. Therefore, I felt her voice wasn't in top form. Had I nothing to compare it too, then I'm sure I would have thought it was better than it really was. I wish they would have allowed more questions to be asked, and spent more time with the interaction too. I only saw *2* EDA's there that I recognized, yet I know there were alot more than that there. Mainly cause it was so dark, you couldn't even see the audience! So anyway, congrats to Dennis and Amy for overcoming the darkness and getting on air. Dennis even managed to do that twice! I guess he was in the right place at the right time. Steve didn't seem his usual happy self. It was like he was overly tense for some reason. Maybe cause he knew it was being taped, I don't know. It just wasn't anything like when I saw her live. I mean, Steve was so at ease then, funny. Things just seemed really tense, and too structured to me. Unlike her shows have been on her tour. Maybe cause again, it was being taped to be aired at a later date, I don't know. So while it wasn't a terrible performance, I just found many things that I felt could have been better. Mostly that's VH-1's fault...but I wish Jewel would have waited till she was healthy to do that show also. Hey EDAs, Did you get your '99 EDA T-Shirt? Well I have been getting lots of requests for more shirts. Emails just about every day asking me if I still have any shirts left or if I will be making any more. I have decided that I just might make more given enough of you want one. There will be a few changes though. I obviously won't be getting near the response that I got when I did the first order...I can see about 30 people tops ordering a shirt rather than 120 like last time. Since it has been so long since I had shirts printed I will have to pay the set up fee again which is $25 dollars. The bad news however is that since I will not be ordering as many the cost does go up. The more shirts I order the lower the cost is. I dont have the exact details worked out but I can see the total cost being up to 3 dollars more per shirt. Although I am pretty sure the shirt will still be less than $20. So the question hear is do you want a shirt and will you send me the money?? Last time I got over 200 orders but I only got money from like half those people. So only tell me you want a shirt only if you REALLY want one. When I find out how many people want one I will work out a price and put it on my web page and make a post about it. And lastly...lets get this done quickly. I will be going back up to school in less than a month and I dont want to be wrapping shirts and working on this a month after school has started. I will need to be concentrating on my grades instead. If you are new and want to see a picture of the shirt's graphic, go to this here page http://picket.cc.purdue.edu/~shortdog/Jewel/t-shirt.html If you want a shirt, message me ASAP. He said that "Love Me Just Leave Me Alone" sounds extremely similar to a Bob Dylan song. The song is "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" from his Live 1966 CD. I listened to it and they are a little bit a like. (not the words but the melody and the way they sing) I'd like to know your opinions though, so email me privately. Thanks. Oh well, at least I say it, and this is my opinion: It is really good. She did have a lot of makeup on, and looked like, well, a rockstar, but I think that is great, because Jewel was just playing dress-up. The whole Making of the Video show was really well done too though. I don't think I can compare the video to all of the others, because they are so different, and that's what I love about Jewel. And the whole discussion about how they said"Jewel" as the album title. And the reason for that is probably because this version of Jupiter (swallow the moon) isn't on an album. They cant say Spirit because it's not on it. Ok, I'm sure that was already discussed, but whatever. That's all from me. Ok, I respect your opinion and all, but I think you are being way too critical. Sure, the audio video thing sucked, and they could have done more songs, but I think it would be best if you could be happy with what you got. Me personally I loved the whole Drug Bust story, and I don't think they should have cut it. After all, what is the name of the show? Storytellers. It's not a concert! It's not supposed to be. Yes, it was predictable for them to play all of the singles, but cant we still enjoy Jewel singing Hands as much as we would have enjoyed her singing anything else. Yes, it would have been cool if they showed more unreleased songs, but it is not worth complaining over.
