Oh yes. I know all the music ins & outs. Oh yes. Phear me. I also just happen to feel like letting you all know something completely un-Jewel-related, but somwhat Jesse-related, because I know you all care. ^_^ I'm sure you've all heard Len (Steal My Sunshine), right? I'm just eager to express that I know those guys! Well... the only one I actually know is DJ Moves (and Druncness Monstr a little). Last summer I recorded a track with Moves, and now he's world famous. Coincidence? Yes, I expect so. I have no idea why I wanted to share that, but now I have. Hey y'all! My first post in a looooonnnngg time! Well, just so ya know, I still LOVE Jewel (in that very very favorite singer kinda way!). I wasn't neglecting the list, I still read, just don't respond much. Well, I LOVE Jupiter's video. I even like the different version of the song, even though when my friend told me about it I thought I wouldn't. Well, I think it represents Jewel's spirit (no pun intended) a lot better than the DSL video. If anyone has any comments on that, e-mail me, because I probably won't read the digest. I guess you can use my aol name, but I'll also check love4oceana@chickmail.com!! Yay... I don't have to spend $13 on an import! But my question is why is it being released in the US? Not that I'm complaining, but didn't MrBB say something a few months ago, that the record company only puts out singles in the market to promote the singer/album? And thats why they only were doing it in other countries because she needed the recognition there, more than in the US or something? Has Jewel's sales and popularity here slipped so much that they need to put out the single here? Because they haven't done so since YWMFM, and it confuses me that they decide to do it now, after all this time. IMO I don't think the singles have been that great since YWMFM and FG, but thats just me... and I'm happy to see something going on sale here w/out it being an import. Peace, cymbaline PS: CDNow says Deep Water and Emily are live tracks. I forgot from which date, but does anyone know if it's the faster version she used to sing? ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Jul 1999 19:55:09 -0400 From: Mike Connell Subject: * Full text of That Jewel article in the USA Today Here's that article in Friday's USA Today I posted about earlier. Mike :-) Jewel arrives on stage without armor By Elysa Gardner, Special for USA TODAY HARTFORD, Conn. - Not long after taking the stage Wednesday at the Meadows Music Theatre, midway through her national tour, Jewel introduced a tune, still untitled, in which she makes a telling confession: "I'm part woman, but still half child." The lyric sums up the persona Jewel projected throughout her two-hour set (2.5 stars out of four). Clad in a sleeveless black top and sequined miniskirt, she was alternately, at times simultaneously, coy ingenue and sultry vamp. One moment she would strut across the stage like some latter-day Mae West, thanking "the boys" in her band. Then, without missing a beat, she would launch into a giggly monologue about how she met ex-boyfriend Steve Poltz - who opened for Jewel and played guitar in her band - and a plaintive version of her hit You Were Meant for Me, which Poltz co-wrote. Clearly, 25-year-old Jewel is an expert at making such seeming contradictions work. In her delicate folk-pop songs, she professes vulnerability and stresses the need for empathy and compassion. Yet she delivered them with the flamboyant, almost swaggering self-assurance of a born diva. Rubbing her hands together, swiveling her hips and flashing her eyes, Jewel demanded and ate up the rapt attention of her fans. Her singing, though technically strong, was often mannered. Veering from throaty low notes to a resonant soprano, she emphasized her slow, deliberate vibrato and waxed melodramatic with her phrasing on ballads such as Foolish Games and Kiss the Flame. But Jewel also proved an appealing and resourceful musician, whether performing alone with her guitar or aided by the crisp precision of her backing group. Though her lyrical, contemplative songs tend to meander a bit - a series of spare acoustic ballads delivered halfway through the set seemed like a long musical recitative - she made up for the lack of structure with nuance. Hands built from a glowing reverie to a buoyant affirmation of faith. Do You was rendered with a winning mix of playfulness and urgency. Though the concert's overall vibe was predictably mellow, Jewel and her cohorts demonstrated that they could rock forcefully, especially toward the end. The set concluded with an overextended version of Who Will Save Your Soul, in which Jewel scatted and emoted relentlessly. She rewarded the fans who stayed for an encore by yodeling and reading a poem from her book, A Night Without Armor, a copy of which was passed to her by an admirer. Jewel aches just like a woman, but she mugs like a little girl. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Jul 1999 18:56:49 EDT From: Lseids@aol.com Subject: * Save The Linoleum I just got a copy of Save The Linoleum and the picture on the back of the CD is the most ADORABLE pic I have ever seen of Jewel! I never thought Jupiter would be a single. I thought DSL would be. I loved that song right from the first day I got the CD though, so it could have been more on the lines of hoping. :o) I think the next one will be What's Simple Is True or Life Uncommon. There is this radio show were they play unreleased songs from singers. I think it is all women artist or something. But they would always play What's Simple is True. Deep Water maybe too. But, you know with the new X-Mas album coming out, do they ever release those songs? I'm sure they have, but how likley is it? Hey everyone! Just a couple of quick questions: Anyone who watched Woodstock on PPV last weekend, what time did Jewel's performance start? Australian PPV is airing Woodstock a week late, because of the time difference and everything, so that the performance times will be the same. So I'll be infront of the TV all day tomorrow, waiting for Jewel, and I thought it would be good if someone could let me know what time Jewel started so I could have my tape reading to record. Ta. Also, I've asked before, but I really, really want to know whether Jupiter is going to be released here (Australia) and if so - WHEN?!?!? I really want to see the video that everyone is raving about! I'd also like a copy of the song on CD, or at least taped off the radio, rather than having to turn on my computer to listen to the RA. Thanks for reading, and please reply if you have any info relating to the requests above. He contacted me since Jewel performed there and that he figured it was likely that some members of this list were there. They have put up a special website with photos of criminal acts in process at Woodstock 99, and are requesting help. Criminal acts they are interested in are larceny, criminal mischief, arson and sexual assault. They are not concerned about drug usuage. They want folks to look at the website to see if they can identify people committing these acts, and are ALSO requesting that if you HAVE photos of people commiting these acts at Woodstock 99, that you provide them with a copy of the photo. Please consider doing this if you were there. It is NOT tattletelling, it is making folks PAY for crimes that in some cases endangered thousands of fellow concert goers. In fact, dozens of people were injured, two in particular with serious back injuries. Just remember this, if incidents like what happened at the end of Woodstock 99 are condoned and/or committed in the future at similar events, the days of such events will be numbered, as insurance will be nearly impossible to obtain. (not to mention such acts are just plain wrong). If you have web access, and either went to Woodstock 99 or know people that did go that are capable of committing these crimes, please visit http://www.troopers.state.ny.us/ to peruse the photos they have there. I'll admit in some of the photos it's nearly impossible to ID anyone. Mike - Jewel list owner : \ / Be an angel.
