Believe it or not! Just wanted to quickly say that I really liked Jewel's set at Woodstock. I agree with Mike that she wasn't too heavily made up. She looked happy to be there and even engaged in some friendly chatter with the crowd, more than usual as of late. Near You Always was a nice opener, just her and her guitar, where she still shines the most and is at her best. YWMFM and Jupiter I could've done without but they went by quickly enough. Foolish Games was OK, very slow and melodic, lacked the anger that makes it great, but decent. Then she really started to do well. Three unreleased gems in a row. Race Car Driver was a wonderful surprise and seemed to get a good response. Down is a very good song and is better than when I heard it two years, the lyrics are much more decipherable. Then Love Me Just Leave Me Alone absolutely rocked. She was all over it. Then the really extended Who Will Save Your Soul was a nice closer. The way she riffs with the guitarist at the end is excellent, shows a lot of talent and rhythm. Beautiful song too. Then the encore of Angel Standing By and a quick acappella Chime Bells to get the crowd excited that she was yodelling closed her set. I was glad to see she stepped up to the occasion, I was pleasantly surprised, maybe she hasn't lost it after all. Though she did miss a golden opportunity to do a Woodstock-y type cover. Most acts did. She shoulda done Summertime as a little Janis Joplin referenece. But oh well. it wasn't perfect, but it was a good set and I was pleased. So there's my positive post. It's been a while. But better rarely than never. I only listened that there were fires in the news, and suddenly my face got scrunched up and I stopped listening to see if anyone DID get hurt. I'm new to the list, so hello to everyone. Nice to meet you all. Now that I've been properly introduced :-)... my comments on the Jones Beach show Saturday night. Amazing. More than I ever could have imagined. I had pretty good seats (as in they could have been worse), but that didn't matter to me much. First, Kendall Payne, who performed on a side stage before the concert was amazing. Her songs are something refreshingly new, as she isn't really influenced by anyone. There was a time in her life where she felt like she was nothing more than Jordan's sister (which is the name of the album), so she didn't listen to pop music, because she didn't want to be a part of anything her sister was a part of. The result is a great album of refreshingly original music. Never had heard of her before, but I think she's worth all of you checking out. I bought her CD there, and she signed it for me, so that was cool. She was also at the Arts Center in NJ with Jewel, and I think she said she's doing a couple of Lilith Fair dates, unfortunately not Jones Beach, which I have tickets to. Then the opening acts... Rusted Root was great. They did about a 40 minute set. They were new to me as well, I really enjoyed them. Following a 15-minute intermission, Steve Poltz came out. He is a really funny guy, he added some extra laughter to the show. He was on for about 40 minutes, and did his usual songs (based on prior setlists I've seen.) Then following Steve, and a 30-minute intermission, Jewel came out. She is even more amazing in concert... I've never seen someone that can put on such a good show. Steve was again funny with his original lyrics to "You Were Meant For Me"... his replacement verse for "Break the yolks and make a smiley face" had me laughing for at least a couple minutes straight. You may have all heard it before, but I'll say it again anyway. "I stab the yolks with my god damn fork, I can't believe you're taking me to court." LOL... that's still funny. She did some new stuff that I haven't heard... she mentioned the recording session she just did for her next album, and played a couple of new songs. One of my favorite parts of a concert... getting to hear unreleased tracks for the first time. Anyways, it was great. She commented on how Jones Beach is one of the most beautiful venues anyone could ever play, and I have to agree. For those of you who have never been, the theatre is right on a stillwater bay, and the stage is in the water, with underground tunnels leading out to it. The seats go right up to the stage now, but there used to be a moat in between the crowd and the stage. One of the fun things to do before the show starts is count the number of beach balls that end up in the water. :-) So, the concert in total was four hours, lasting from 8pm to 12am. Never expected it to go that long... does anyone have any insight on how long her concerts usually last? I live out on the East End in the Hamptons, so after traffic (being one two lane highway leading out of there) I didn't get home until 2am. Now that I've rambled on for my first post to the list, I'll tell those of you going to the shows in MA tomorrow and CT on Wed., you're in for quite a concert. The only time she was even mentioned was when Serena said something about "yodeling Jewel"!! They could have at least shown a LITTLE of her performance!! After all, she was the only performer there who didn't kill someone in their moshpit!! But she wasn't only snubbed by MTV. I was watching Music news on VH1 this afternoon and they rolled off a few of the woodstock performers, and they excluded Jewel of course! If they can mention people like Alanis and Sheryl, they can mention Jewel!! A local radio station was also broadcasting woodstock, and all they played of Jewel's performance were two songs! (foolish games, hands) They cut her short so that they could play Collective Soul instead!! No wonder people are blaming the media for teen violence!
