Hi angels. Yesterday was undoubtedly one of the best days of my life - and I didn't even meet Jewel! Anyway, I went to see Jewel perform at Jones Beach with my sister Jen and my two friends Angie and Beth - My sister and I had 11th row seats!!!!!! We decided to go to Jones Beach before the concert to go swimming, but we decided that first we would stop by the theater to see if Jewel's soundcheck was going on. We went to the main gates, but much to our disappointment they were all locked - so we decided to sneak in and squeeze ourselves through an 8 inch opening at the bottom of the gates. Upon first entering we thought that a security guard would most definitely see us and kick us out, but there were no security guards there yet, and all the people that were there didn't seem to even care. So, we walked toward the stage and saw a kid hanging up Jewel posters - we started talking to him and it turned out that his mom and Jewel's mom are good friends and that he has been touring and hanging out with Jewel all summer. We asked him if Jewel had done her soundcheck yet and he said that she hadn't. So we decided to go back to the car and get our bags and camera - the beach was no longer any importance to us; we just wanted to see Jewel! We hopped a couple of fences this time to get back in - we didn't want to chance being caught going in through the main enterance. We ran back toward the stage upon hearing the echo of "Hands" coming from the stage. When we got to the stage we saw that Jewel wasn't playing, but her band was!!!! So, we sat down and watched. After they performed "Down so Long" we applauded and Steve saw us and began to blow us kisses!!!!!!! The band finished the soundcheck - without Jewel (it turns out that Jewel doesn't need to show up for the soundcheck, so she didn't) and guess what they did next - they came toward us and started talking to us!!!!!!!! It was unbelievable - we were in total shock! We were introduced to everyone - Doug Pettibone (one of Jewel's guitarist), Steve Poltz, Brady (Jewel's drummer), and an old guy that we were told to call Doc. We sat and talked with them for a while and they all thought it was so cool how we snuck in! Then they told us they had to go get something to eat, but that they would be back soon - and Doug asked us if we would take him swimming when he returned - our response.....HELL YEAH!!!!!!!! While we waited for them to return we watched Rusted Root do their soundcheck. Finally the band returned and Doug said he was ready to go swimming - so we brought him swimming!!!! It was soooo unbelievable! After we were done swimming we headed back to the theater - it was about 7:00 now and we had been there since around 4:00. Doug and Brandon(the 19 yr. old guy who tours with Jewel) went through a different entrance while we waited in line to get our tickets checked - they said they would try to get us backstage passes, but we didn't get our hopes up. So, we went to our seats and waited for the concert to begin. While Rusted Root was performing Doug came and sat by my sister Jen and I. I told him that Jen wanted to go up on stage with Steve Poltz during his set, and he said that he would arrange for it to happen......if Jen slipped Steve the tongue while they were kissing. So, at the end of Steve's set he called Jen up on stage and she danced in the back while Steve performed "Waterfalls". Then he gave her a kiss and she slipped him the tongue!!!!! He called the old guy, Doc, out and told Jen to kiss him like that - I was laughing hysterically in my seat.....until she actually did kiss him like that at which point I sat in disbelief and silence thinking to myself - "holy sh**"!!!!!!! After Steve was done performing and we were waiting for Jewel to take the stage, Doug came out and gave the four of us backstage passes for after the show!!!!!!!! We returned to our seats and watched Jewel put on a spectacular and unbelievably amazing show - every note she sang was like a angel striking a heavenly harp!!!!!! - she filled our souls with a sense of purity that is almost impossible to mirror. At one point in the show she actually mentioned that Doug (her guitarist) went swimming at the beach before the concert and got bitten by a crab - he did not get bitten by a crab!!!!! When she was done performing(which I might add was somewhat saddening since she had not sang "Sometimes it be that Way" - one of my favorite Jewel songs) we made our way backstage, but were redirected to an underground tunnel which led there. We were not allowed to enter the tunnel until........Jewel was out and in her tour bus!!! To our horror this meant we would not be able to meet Jewel!!!!! - But we were not that disappointed b/c we had experienced something that happens maybe only once in a lifetime. So, we went backstage and chilled with the band for awhile and they gave us their autographs. Finally it was time to part, and we all exchanged hugs. We exited through the tunnel with Doug and watched as he and the rest of the band got on their busses to leave. To put the perfect ending on our wonderfully amazing day, Brady (Jewel's Drummer) gave all 4 of us hugs and kissed us all on the cheeks!!!!! I would like to end this post by saying that JEWEL's BAND ROCKS.........and so does Jewel!!!!!!!!!!!! Bye :) - Kelly *the fortunate angel who chilled with Jewel's band* ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Jul 1999 00:59:27 EDT From: FumblyFat@aol.com Subject: * posted on FTE On MST3K, they were watching "The Horror of spider island"..about a group of women and a guy who's plane crashes..anyway, two of the women start fighting and one of the bots said: "Backstage at lilith fair, Joan Osborne and Jewel get into another brawl" This is weird..with all the talk of fighting going on right now on the list.. I heard alot of questioning on MTV about how Jewel would do, because she didn't really fit the bill, but, I think she'll be remembered as one of the most powerful performances at Woodstock, and will truly stand out. i can't wait to see her next weekend. I've seen tons of requests for a copy of the tape, and I'd be happy to make copies for anyone who wants one(even you Michiel), just let me know. Hi angels, Well my highschool graduation is nearing and our school is hassling us all to get our quotes for the yearbook in... Anyway there are a lot of cool Jewel quotes i can think of but there are also probably a lot i'd miss from both her album and non album songs or poems. So if anyone has any good suggestions for quotes I would really love it if you could email them to me privately at kwdd@ozemail.com.au The quotes can be witty, cute, inspiring, creative.... whatever I don't know what sort of genre I'm going for I'm just hoping some quote will hit me on the head and be screaming "I'm THE quote for you" in my face.... If you know any good non-Jewel quotes I would love to hear from you as well!! I was thinking of perhaps using the James Allen quote that Jewel has in her Spirit CD booklet.. the one with stuff about cherishing your ideals and the music that stirs in your heart.. etc... but yeah I'd like to read as many quotes as possible to choose from before i make a decision. Subject: * "Korn"stock Well MTV has proved themselves yet once again...they SUCK. After watching it all weekend to see if they'd even show one second of Jewel, they prevailed again, in that they managed to totally ignore the fact she was even there at all...except the ONE time Anonda mentioned her as one act she was looking forward to, although I think that was a total lie. Just something to say. They even talked alot more about Elvis Costello than Jewel, even Tragically Hip! Oh yeah, theyre REAL popular with MTV...you'd think since MTV does play Jewel's videos somewhat, and are supposed to be airing the Making the Video special tonight for Jupiter, that they could have given her at least one minute of coverage. Afterall, they showed the same clips over and over again of Korn, Limp, Metallica, and Rage. I think I now have all the words memorized to those parts of their songs. Talk about boring. The same things, over and over and over. Felt like I was watching reruns all weekend. Even on their various shows, like 1515, TRL, etc., they just kept showing the same clips over and over. I don't feel like I missed out on anything by not attending Woodstock. Seeing what all happened, with the towers being pulled down, the fires being started, the filthy camping areas, I'm glad I didn't go. And to top it all off, it wasn't even as big as Rockfest '97 was in TX. They interviewed Adam (the singer of the Counting Crows) and he even said the festival in TX was larger...and that was a one day thing. So what can the promoters of Woodstock say? They had over 50 bands, compared to maybe 15-20 that were here in TX for Rockfest, and we had almost double the amount of people, for a ONE day concert! As opposed to the 3-day thing up there. Here, there were no fires, no mud, no tower's falling down, no one dying, and for the most part, it was pretty organized. I will really be surprised if there is ever another Woodstock. I mean, all it would do is show that the promoters are truly morons. Let's stick 250,000 on a military base and watch them kill themseves...yeah, good idea. And how did the fires get started? WELL, after they made a point to show the viewers that razors, bottles, and things of that nature weren't allowed in, what do they do? They pass out candles to everyone! Say this with me now...ONE....TWO...THREE....D-U-HHHHH!!!!!! I think that just topped the whole thing off. No more Woodstock. It's not 1969 and never will be. They need to stop trying to pretend and get out of their make believe land. If they want to have a wild crazy kill everyone type of festival, then call it that. I bet no one comes either. But don't use the Woodstock name to draw a crowd...I think that's false advertising. Cause the last thing anyone got who was there, was peace. Just look at all the scenes MTV showed, I bet one out of every 3 people I saw were sleeping!!!! Boy, that's fun. Let's dish out $150 bucks so we can wear ourselves out in one night, then sleep the next 2 days in the mud, and whatever else was mixed in...what fun. I'd rather stare at a brick wall for 3 days in a prison cell. So needless to say, MTV has once again proved they suck. They're about as fake as anything can possibly be. I felt like someone should have just taken a large pail of mud, and dumped it on all of the DJ's heads before they went off the air. That would have been the best part of Woodstock, but they couldn't even do that...cause they all left when things got a little too wild for them.
