I have been too busy hanging with Patrick Leonard to post. :P [thanks to Jason for the motivation to finally get this done.] I initially planned to drive down to San Diego with my friend Simon. On Thursday, he called and announced that he was not going. No amount of pleading, begging or reasoning would change his mind. So Friday afternoon, I got on the phone with one of those Internet travel companies and booked a flight. Luckily, I had a $50 coupon, so the flight wasn't *insanely* expensive. A brief but scenery-filled flight down the coast took me to San Diego. Man, is it warm there! And the palm trees! Everywhere. I managed to find my way to a shuttle, where a former hippie driver told me about the street festival, San Diego's history of hosting the X-Games (which were currently going on in San Francisco) and pointing out a former house of his along the way. He dropped me off a few blocks from Newbreak, and I wandered in to find Tom, Dennis, Amy and Alan sitting down. After a brief introduction (the first of many), Dennis pointed out that they had amazing orange juice. I wandered up to the counter, and grabbed up cup of freshly-squeezed OJ, along with an El Paso Trail sandwich. Man, does Newbreak ever have good - -- no, great -- food. More EDAs started to wander in, and I soon meet Chris and Larry, Jamie, Lori, Jason, Gerrit, Rebecca, Jennifer, Mo, Mike, Tammy, Season, Jamie, Mike (Carmona), Riz, Jimmy, and a whole bunch of others. (I'm not sure who I met where, but hellos also go out to to Maddie, Candi, John, Jason, Alex ... oh, gawd, I can't possibly remember everyone.) Jamie was so kind as to sell me one of her extra tickets for the show. Hurray! I now had somewhere to sit. Jason Mraz, as has been said, is truly amazing. Man, can that guy rock. He also appears to be something of a chick magnet. (What is it with guys from San Diego who play guitar?) Now, I'd met Jennifer McBride before, having lined up to buy tickets at Shoreline. I vaguely knew she was going to play. I didn't know she was going to be that good. :-) Lemme see ... there was also Rizoule, Jamie, Season [I swear I heard "Susan"] and a whole bunch of other EDAs who hit the stage. I chatted briefly with a few HGH people during breaks in the performance, but never did manage to say hi to Nedra. Dennis gave an introduction to EDAF, and he was followed by none other than Ms Nedra Carroll. What struck me about her was (a) how much she believed in what she was saying [whether or not I understood/believed all of it] and (b) how she's "just someone's mom]. Of course, my Mom doesn't do anywhere near as many cool things. Elizabeth Hummel took the stage. Yeah. :-) This was my first time seeing her live, and she was great. Elizabeth played a whole bunch of old stuff, including Goodwill Store (the one song of hers I knew) and her Macintosh song, which had me laughing out loud. Thanks to Larry [Chris, maybe?] for the nice EDA picks. And I received an EDAF one, too. After the performance, Dennis grabbed Woody and wandered across the street to the beach. [Strangely enough, the cops refused to let him rope everyone's favourite plywood bovine in the middle of a *closed* section of road, despite Mr. Harris' protestation that he had done the same in Times square, the Boston Common, and the White House. Okay, so I made up the bit about the white house.] So, I stood, alone, on the grass with Dennis. Woody hung around (well, what is is a plywood cow to do?). So, Dennis demonstrated to me how exactly one goes about roping a plywood cow. So I tried. And tried again. And again. I finally did managed to lasso ol' Woody. I was the first EDA to do so. :-) Several others soon joined in the plywood cow roping fest, and Dennis gave out buttons with "Woody" on them, and "Cow Tales," which are really chewy caramel snacks. Always prepared, out ringleader picked up a tube of -- as Dave Barry says, I am *not* making this up -- a tube of udder cream, at the Wal-Mart. We managed to sort out rides, and caravaned our way back to Hotel Circle. We then caravaned our way over to a McDonald's, where a bunch of EDAs did stand-up take-out, and we headed off to the concert. We arrived and we greeted with -- surprise -- free parking. But for some reason, those nutcases at the Coors Amphitheater managed to start the show on time. Argh! We heard Steve playing as we walked in. Runrunrun ... I found my seats, and settled down. It had been a year since I'd last seen Steve. He was fun as always, giving a 12 year old girl a case of beer [or did he?], inviting a girl onstage to drink, and yakking away with his hometown crowd. Midway through the set, two women in the middle section held up a giant banner which read: Steven J. Poltz I Love Everything About You Cool. :-) Despite several vigilant EDA attempts, he didn't managed to squeeze in Lockjaw or Daddy She's a Goddess. I spotted Alan working the sound booth. Steve only played half of the ABC's of Love :( ... but the 9-year-old girls seated in the row behind us found "a pair of Ds" rather amusing. Anyway, intermission came, and I found Dennis et alia over by the side stage listening to Cindy Lee Berryhill and the Troy sisters. Support local music! Back to ... Jewel. please don't say i love you / those words touch me much too deeply / She opened, as has been tradition on the spirit tour, with Near You Always, one of my favourite songs of hers. I've been known to cry at points. Other highlights of the show including Foolish Games and Sometimes It Be That Way [!!]. Ah, SIBTW is one of my faves. Despite reports to the contrary, Jewel gave the entire performance in ... a tutu. :-) No, seriously, she had these weird leather arm band thingees on, and a bunch more leather stuff. Ms Kilcher had tons of energy that night, and fed off the hometown crowd. After the show, we managed to find each other again, find our cars and find a Denny's. It wasn't suitable. So we found *another* Denny's. They managed to to a pretty good imitation of Buffalo Wings for some Californians. :-) Amy commented on the wait being atypically short. I chatted with Pedro from HGH for a while. At this point, I hopped in Jimmy's car as he followed the other EDAs ... somewhere. I feel asleep. Where are we? was my groggy response. Oh, he said, we stropped by the hotel for a bit. Zzzzz ... Much later, we finally arrived at Jason's place. He graciously found mattresses and the like for everyone, and I was fast asleep. - -- end Saturday -- shad 96c / 3B CS / mac activist / eda / fumbler fan of / jewel / sophie b. / sarah slean / steve poltz / emm gryner / / x-files / buffy / dawson's creek / habs / bills / 49ers / t h i n k d i f f e r e n t. we used to have hope / now we've got soap on a rope / we used to have dreams / now we've got overpaid ... baseball teams / we've got grocery baggers / graffiti taggers / golf ball shaggers / - --Steve Poltz and Jewel Kilcher, "Silver Lining" ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jul 1999 12:42:46 EDT From: ABershaw@aol.com Subject: * MrBB-HGH Workshop/BV99 DETAILS! You're Invited!! Good Morning All, More good news regarding the HGH Workshop during the 3rd annual Bearsville Reunion (BV99) this weekend! As per our plan, we've secured the Bearsville Theater for Saturday. So we will be conducting the HGH Workshop at the original site of Jewelstock! :-) The workshop will begin at 11:00am this coming Saturday morning (July 17th) at The Bearsville Theater. We'll begin with Nedra (Jewel's mom/manager) & Shane (Jewel's older brother) talking about HGH & then we'll continue the discussion with all EDAs who attend. Following this, we'll provide food so we can all have a nice little picnic & some socializing time with The EDAs. (You are welcome to bring more food & non alchoholic beverages if you like! - We could probably use a few coolers, too.) Please try to be at The Bearsville Theater a little early so we can start on time. Plan accordingly if you are driving in from out of town. This should be a great time for all who participate. Several other HGH people will also be attending as well as several people from the J-Team. Please join us! For those who need previous info, directions, instructions or have no idea what I'm talking about, my original post (now updated) about all this follows. It includes all instructions & everything else you need to know. We look forward to seeing many new & familiar faces! Seeya soon, MrBB Subj: MrBB-HGH Workshop at Bearsville 99! You're Invited! From: MRBB earlier this week (but now updated) Hi to all EDAs that are planning (or considering) attending this years Bearsville Reunion next weekend, I have what I hope will be some exciting news for you! We've been wanting to do an HGH/EDA discussion event on the East Coast & we've decided to do it in Woodstock next weekend so Bearsville Reunionites can easily attend. :-) As many of you know, Nedra (Jewel's mom/manager) stopped by the SoCal EDA Gathering on June 26th & spoke to the EDAs about Higher Ground For Humanity. We would have enjoyed expanding that into a discussion with the EDAs, but didn't because we promised not to interfere with all the wonderful performers already scheduled that day. This time we'd like to do a similar thing but devote the time to direct discussion with the EDAs. So....here's the plan: Next Saturday afternoon , July 17th, we will be holding an HGH workshop/picnic during the Bearsville Reunion. It will be held in The Bearsville Theater lobby (or outside if its nice) beginning at 11:00am. You are invited to attend! Nedra will talk a bit about HGH & then we'll have a discussion with the EDAs on how you can "Be the difference that makes a difference" in your own lives. We have many questions for you, probably far more than you have of us, believe it or not! We'd love for this Bearsville Reunion 99 to be the beginning of that ongoing exchange. We'll supply a bunch of food & we'll make a nice afternoon of it. We'd certainly enjoy having all Bearsville Reunion attendees join us. I'd also like to invite any others who'd like to attend to simply come down for that afternoon, even if you were'nt planning on going to the reunion. Everyone is welcome! We thought doing this next weekend at the original Jewelstock site was too good to pass up, since so many EDAs would already be in the area. So....here's what I'd like you to do if you'd like to attend. Please contact Tammy, who is already co-ordinating the folks attending next weeks reunion, if you'd like to join us. Write to: BRSVL99@aol.com Please let Tammy know if you'd like to attend the Bearsville Reunion, the HGH workshop or both. That will help us determine how much food to buy for the picnic & how many to expect. If you need more information about the reunion, directions to The Bearsville Theater, etc, please go to Mike's BEARSVILLE REUNION 99 website at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/bv/bv99.htm We'd love to have you join us as this will be a great opportunity to learn more about HGH, The EDAFoundation & how you can participate. Nedra, Shane, The EDAF Board, AmyJo & I look forward to spending a nice afternoon with you in Bearsville/Woodstock! Seeya there! She sounds sooo much better live than her albums. She is also a good storyteller and makes the fans feel like they are here friends. I flew from Chicago,IL to New Orleans, LA to see the Jewel Concert (I was up there on business. I'm actually from San Antoio,TX) Jewel was so good that I'm making sure that my wife gets to attend a concert this year. It's worth the cost of airfare, hotel and tickets to see this concert!! WORDS OF ADVICE: Find a way to see Jewel live. BTW: Her opening act and acoustic guitar player, Steve Poltz was great. I'm definately going to buy his album. "It's been a long way from living out of her van in San Diego to super-pop stardom. A much-deserved success. Still, this song reminds us of Shawn Colvin's "Sunny Came Home." I had never really thought about it, but now it does remind me of it. Great, now everytime I hear DSL it will remind me! MY BOYFRIEND SAID THE EXACT SAME THING WHEN HE HEARD THE SONG...THOUGHT IT SOUNDED JUST LIKE SUNNY. I HADN'T THOUGHT OF IT, BUT IT MADE SENSE TO ME TOO... NOT TO JEWEL ISN'T A COMPLETELY ORIGINAL CAT. JUST TO SAY THAT SHE, LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, ABSORBS WHAT SHE HEARS AND IS INFLUENCED BY OSMOSIS WITHOUT NECESSARILY REALIZING IT.
