I had tickets to both the Houston and Dallas shows, and probably WOULDN'T have gone due to a lack of funds. But, my lovely Austin angel pal Luna talked me into going. THANKS! "Goddamn Funny!" So I went up to the Dallas show with Luna, the notorious Dennis Harris, and Amy Neufeld. The three of us went to Reunion Arena in Dallas early so we could help with the food bank drive at the gates. It turns out, though, that Dallas was in the midst of a MAJOR canned goods shortage. I guess Campbell's Soup is running a soup embargo there or something. Which sucked for us, but it was kinda funny. Not funny haha, but funny "isn't it ironic?" "Turning Lemon into Lemonade" OR "Turning Blueprints into Yellow" BUT being there early totally paid off for us, because while we were standing by the canned goods barrels twiddling our thumbs, we met MORE Texas EDAs! First we met Rowdy White, whom hopefully all of you know from his rocking posts. I just want to state here for the record that Rowdy is the ABSOLUTE nicest guy on the face of the earth. The only person who probably has less mean bones in his body than Rowdy is Steve Poltz, and even then, it's REAL close. Rowdy rocks! Next, we met Courtney and Cory. They were even more exicted to meet us than we were to meet them, but just barely! They were SO adorable! They were absolutely brimming with excitement over the show. And they both have crushes the size of Mt. Everest on Steve Poltz. :) "NOW TO THE SHOW... - Steve Poltz" Steve opened up as usual, and he rocked, as usual. It has to be VERY hard to walk out after a Steve Poltz set and NOT love the guy. He's the goofy, good natured, partying guy that every guy would love to hang out with, and every girl would love to go out with. The crowd was into his set too, which made it all the better. "NOW TO THE SHOW... - You know, that blonde girl" It was a VERY good show. It's just amazing that no matter how many times I hear or see it, I still get chills when Jewel goes out there in the complete dark and breaks through the pitch black with, "Please don't...kiss me so sweet.." IT RULES! She wore a long red dress with spaghetti straps that was very girl next doory and seemed like Jewel circa '96 or so, as opposed to the glam, heavy on the makeup look that she seems to favor so much these days. On the songs, the only complaint I guess I had was "Grey Matter," which I don't like too much in the first place, but she slowed it down even more, and it was almost unbearable. Why does she ALWAYS slow down songs? It's really annoying. "NOW HERE'S THE KEWL PART" So Jewel calls everyone down to the front of the stage during DSL, and I go rushing up. I'm like 10 or 20 feet from Jewel, and it seems the closer I get to her, the more I become a rabid, screaming fan, fighting to get just an inch closer. Then Dennis whispers in my ear, "Why don't you throw your hat onstage?" WHAT A GREAT IDEA! I was wearing one of those bucket/fishing caps that seem to be so pops among the kids these days, so at the end of a song (I THINK it was Life Uncommon) I throw my hat up and it goes in between Jewel and Steve. But Steve sees it, picks it up, AND PUTS ON MY HAT! STEVE IS WEARING MY HAT! Well, it was exciting for me, ok? After the show, while Steve's signing autographs, I get his attention and ask, "How's the hat?" And he's like, "Oh, was that yours?" And I'm like, "Yeah!" And he's like, "It's kewl! I'm gonna wear it a lot!" And I'm like "Hell Yeah!" And he's like, "Thanks!" And I'm like "No Problem!" *for those of you who like complaining about grammar, there's 6 "like"s in that paragraph. So sue me.* "A long road that stretched from Houston to nowhere" So we're off to Houston, flashing Tom Proven's picture to passerbys. There we're supposed to meet up with lots of other Texas EDAs at a park in the Woodlands to converse, have some greasy, greasy sausages with cheese in them on a buttered up bun, and rope the plywood cow. I sold my extra ticket to Rowdy, so he joined the cavalcade. When we get there, I meet Derek, Amber, and Amber's cousin. We chilled there for awhile, with the girls straining to hear the soundcheck from across the lake and the guys immersed in a cutthroat game of Dominos. I buy a ticket from Derek, which is in the 5th row pit! I wanted to give him a big hug! "" After waiting outside and finding out that the canned goods embargo had now spread to Houston, we entered the gates of the Woodlands Pavillion. However, Dennis and Amy find out that their seats are right behind the mix boards, and they can't even see the stage. So, Dennis and Amy swing into action, stick it to the man, and get their seats upgraded. "NOW TO THE SHOW... - Stevie Poo Puddin' and Pie" Like 5 seconds before Steve comes out, it just starts POURING. And I mean POURING. Luckily, we're all in covered seats. Steve rocks again, but this time the crowd isn't really paying attention to him. Their loss. The only time they seemed to even acknowledge he was there was when he talked about the Astros in "The Chair Song," when he did TLC's "Waterfalls," and "The Star Wars Song." BUT, the big highlight of his show was when Jewel, some members of her band, and Mr. X come onto the stage after running around in the rain. They all start doing a little jig on stage. Jewel's such a cutie! :) Then, in between Steve and Jewel, we meet a couple more EDAs: Heather and I'm REALLY REALLY sorry, but I don't remember your name. Luna and I also find our fellow Austin EDA Tessa in the crowd. "NOW TO THE SHOW... - Juel!" Now this was a GREAT show. GREAT. She was REALLY talkative and hamming it up. She had that Jewel attitude to old. It ruled. Dennis and Amy said it was even better than the San Diego show. She told the Mexican Marijuana story and the German Interview story and they both were hits with the crowd. She did lots of scatting. Lots of yelling. And my fav, lots of growling. For those of you who have the Phenomenon soundtrack, remember how she gets all rowdy at the end of the song? She's all growling and getting VERY Joplinesque in my opinion? Well, she did that ALL over the place at both shows. LM, JLMA is a full-fledged rock song now. Life Uncommon is the rocking, inspired song it always knew it could be. And Down! Don't even get me started on Down! Down is one of those songs where, if I heard it for the first time, not ever hearing any angelfood, I would go, "WHOA. What do I have to do to get my hands on a copy of that?" The way she plays the songs now ROCKS. It's a natural and successfull progression from POY to Spirit to what she's doing on the road now. As far as the setlist goes, it was exactly the same as Dallas, except minus "The Oh-we-oh Song", "Grey Matter", and "Satellite" and plus "SIBTW" and "Happy Ending." I was sitting next to Luna and while Jewel was deciding what song to play, she started to strum "Summer Home in your Arms." And Luna almost had a heart attack. She wanted SO bad to hear that song. But then she decided to play "Happy Ending." Which is a good song, but still.... "HERE'S THE KEWL PART II - Steve Strikes Back" So in the middle of Jewel's set, I get Steve's attention, and point to my hat. I'm wearing another fishing/bucket hat. Steve recognizes me and he's all looking at me and Luna! And we're going crazy that he recognizes us. THEN, at the end of the show before the encore, when they're throwing out the pics, drumsticks, etc, Steve comes to the front of the stage, points to ME, and asks for my hat! And so I'm like, "I REALLY wanted to keep that hat, but what the hell!" So I throw him my hat. An EXCELLENT throw, I might add. So Steve's now stole two of my hats. "The End...or is it?" So now, as I sit here writing this, Luna, Dennis, Amy, Derek, and Amber are all in New Orleans seeing Jewel yet again. LUCKY BASTARDS! AND I gave them another hat to give to Steve. I guess Steve and I have a give and take relationship: I give him hats and he takes them. I can't WAIT to hear their report on that concert. "The Mushy Stuff" I can't believe how close I came to not going to the concerts. I never really appreciated how much fun and how special EDAs were as a group of people aside from Jewel. Bearsville's coming too fast this year for me to go, but I DEFINETLY plan on going there next year and making it a yearly thing. WE are a very special group of people who just happen to share something in common. GET INVOLVED! For those of you who are still reading I still have a couple more quick points: YAY to Amber for getting to give her Angel Beanie Babie to Jewel. YAY to Rowdy for going out of his way to give me a ride from Houston to Austin. YAY to Courtney and Cory for doing such a good job of maintaining their innocence. NAY to all those EDAs who were at the Dallas and Houston shows that we didn't meet. E-mail us up! Join us! We miss you! You COMPLETE us. :) Well, I think I've made this long enough. Thanks to everyone who's still reading. The both of you. (review of Dallas concert) yeh,.. so i know,.. you don't believe me. BUT HE DID! i went to the jewel concert in dallas on friday. It was wonderful (although the concert critic gave some pretty horrible, very offending comments about it in the dallas morning news). anyways,.. after one of steve's songs,.. the crowd applauded, died down, and I screamed out "I LOVE YOU!". then he said over the microphone,... "hehe,.. I love you too." Everyone in front of me turned around and smiled. It was my moment. wow,... he's so beautiful. another awesome thing that happened was toward the end,... when everyone started rushing up to the stage,... even though the security people were trying to block me and my friends, I was able to slip right under his arms and get up right in front of the stage. The drummer set down his drum sticks after he bowed and I grabbed them. After putting up a 10 minute fight with these girls who wouldn't let go of the sticks,.. I was able to walk away with at least one. YEH! I met this real great EDA named rick,.... so if you're reading this "Hi!" My friends and I waited two hours for jewel to come out, but sadly, she didn't come out. We got autographs from the whole band though so that was good. We tried following the bus afterwards, but twenty minutes we were on 45 and we figured they were on their way to Houston. Darn. all in all,.. It was the BEST NIGHT EVER! okay,.. well,.. here's a copy of what the critic wrote in the newspaper. He obviously doesn't even like jewel cuz i thought her skattin was awesome, her lyrics kick A*S and he just doesn't know her at all cuz he didn't even get the title of YWMFM right. I know we're all big jewel people here so noone take this real seriously. We all love her and enjoy her as an entertainer, what this guy says doesn't matter. always and always,.. only me,.. the fallen angel that loves green tea and the good ice,..and of course,... STEVE POLTZ. wow,.. he's a hottie. his was from the Dallas Morning News... i copied off the online paper.. Lackluster Arena wrong setting for unpolished Jewel 07/10/99 By Thor Christensen / The Dallas Morning News Jewel has graced the cover of Time magazine, performed on the Super Bowl halftime show and sold 10 million copies of her first album. All at the ripe old age of 24. But she hasn't yet learned how to rock an arena. Granted, the deck was stacked against her before she even walked onstage Friday night at Reunion Arena. The place was half empty, and the audience was strangely hesitant to remove its collective butt from the seats. One of Jewel's roadies had to practically beg fans to "spontaneously" stand up during the upbeat "Down So Long" and move toward the big open space in front of the stage. After it became clear that yes, Jewel wants you to get up and boogie, lots of fans did shuffle toward the stage. But it was an awkward moment in a mostly low-key show that was far better suited to a small club than a 20,000-capacity sports arena. You can argue that neither Jewel nor her folk-flavored songs are supposed to whip fans into an arena-rock frenzy. Legitimate point. But mellow or not, Jewel has a few things to learn about stage presence. When she wasn't playing guitar, she mostly stood statuelike, wringing her hands nervously as she sang. While a giant video screen behind the stage gave the audience something to look at, the images it showed were often worse than none at all: Jewel looking like a bad soap-opera actor, scrunching up her face dramatically to ensure that you didn't miss all the anguish and sadness in her lyrics. The "special effects" on the screen weren't much better. At one point, pseudo-psychedelic clouds made it look like smoke was streaming out of her nostrils and ears. She tried to connect with the crowd by telling a few funny stories - one about how her ex-boyfriend (and current opening act) Steve Poltz dissed the words to "You Belong to Me" as "sounding too much like chick lyrics"; the other about a pretentious German interviewer who misinterpreted her Hitler reference in "Innocence Maintained." But the stories were too few and far between. The weight of the show fell on her music, which simply couldn't keep it propped up. As a vocalist, she was totally hit-and-miss. Her brief bursts of soul singing enlivened the otherwise bland "Life Uncommon," and her manic call-and-response scatting with guitarist Doug Pettibone during "Who Will Save Your Soul" sounded like something from Led Zeppelin II. But as powerful as her voice could be, her reliance on fake sobbing and overblown vibrato was as annoying as many of her lyrics. "If I could tell the world just one thing/It would be that we're all OK," she sang in "Hands," - "And not to worry, because worry is wasteful." If she never grows into a great live performer, at least we know Jewel can have a career writing self-help books. My response to this inquire was intended to simply be informative, and nothing else. My point was that, in Japan, unlike the statement about Europe, passes were not just given to the radio/tv/press. To all of those that have emailed me asking about "how to get a pass"... I am sorry, but I cannot help you. I am not "in" with the band or have any "tight connections." I would love to see everyone who wants to meet Jewel get a pass, but that of course will not happen. Please enjoy the time that she is on stage in front of you. That right there is a wonderful thing.
