I dont really write much, but I figured I would give it a try. I have tickets to the Jewel concert in Chicago (anyone else going?). I have been to quite a few concerts but I have never had seats before and never been to a Jewel one, so I was wondering if some one could write me back and fill me in on "how to get the best out of my concert" :) or something. Thanks! ~Kacie Lil' Angel ps. I was reading some mail about people getting all upset about the Jewel setlists. I think its silly. Dave Mattews doesnt mix up his concerts that greatly either, I have been to four and they all were very very similar. Same encore and everything. Bascially, get over it. I've made a club called "Women In Popular Music" which is dedicated to every single woman in rock/alternative/folk music such as Jewel, Sarah Maclachlan, Courtney Love, Tori Amos, Lene Marlin, Veruca Salt, Sheryl Crow and HEAPS more. So far I have around 13 photo albums capturing these rock goddesses in their true forms and a lot of links to help you build your knowledge of these inspirational people. I'm also trying to keep the calendar section up to date with concerts/signings etc. If I have taken photos from your pages and you don't want them up, feel free to email me and I will take them down. And try not to be too bitchy, I didn't know and I'll take them down right away. Now you may want the address, which is http://www.clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/womeninpopularmusic Hope to see you there! - --- *~ThE sInGaLoNg AnGeL~* *********************************** chickclick.com http://www.chickclick.com girl sites that don't fake it. http://www.chickmail.com sign up for your free email. *********************************** ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Jul 1999 04:12:27 EDT From: NHHStudent@aol.com Subject: * Re: Jewel Concerts > I now Jewel doesn't want you to make sounds while she is singing but does > she care if you stand up through the whole thing??? I usually stand up > during concerts but this is my first Jewel concert so I wasn't sure. I don't know if she minds as much as the people who will be sitting behind you. During the Irvine show, two extremely drunk girls refused to sit down for about twenty minutes. They were right behind me, so while I got a kick out of watching the girls fall out of their chairs and the people behind them throw fits, I know I would have been pissed off if I were sitting behind them. Anyway, after asking those girls to sit down, complaining about it to the security guards, and security telling them to sit their arses down, the people asked (more like yelled) Jewel to tell those girls to sit down. Jewel said to the standing, drunk girl, "honey (sweetie...whichever), sit down. The people behind you can't see." Everyone cheered, the girl embarrassingly plopped herself in her chair, and the show went on. It's pretty irritating when everyone in the venue is sitting and you're the only one standing up. I'm sure you're not as rude as those girls were so I'd stand until someone asks you to sit. As for Jewel, I'm sure the whole fuss between security, the people behind, and the girls was aggravating and that's probably why she responded to it. Some girl in one of the front rows was standing up in the middle of her concert (before Jewel invited people to come forward) and of course she was blocking the view of the people behind her. So right before Jewel starts a song, she looks at the girl and asks her to sit down. She wasn't exactly mean about it, but I'm sure the girl felt REALLY embarrassed. The whole crowd behind her (who couldn't see) cheered and Jewel said "Quit cheering. You didn't win a war or anything." Personally, I was glad that she told the audience to shut up. I guess because I wanted to tell them the same thing. She was trying to sing an awesome rendition of Grey Matter at Irvine (you know how emotional she gets during Foolish Games? Imagine Grey Matter that way.) and everyone kept cheering and yelling. So she told everyone to shut up. I think audiences just have a tendency to get over-excited which is OK, except that some people actually came to the concert to hear music and not a hundred people yelling "I love you Jewel!" Hey guys! I was just at the mall picking up blank tapes at Sam Goody. On their New Releases chart it said that Jewel had a new release coming in August or September. I asked the cashier about it but there wasn't any information on what it was. I was just curious if anyone knew about this. Maybe its just a single. Thanks! - -Jen ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Jul 1999 14:59:00 EDT From: Cisalpine@aol.com Subject: * Setlist/Review for Jewel+Steve I know it's a little late, but I don't know if anyone has already put up the setlist for Jewel and Stevie at the Gorge in Wa on July 3 yet. Steve's set was great, as I expected it to be. I have all his CD's, but I have never seen him live before, and he is simply amazing. His charisma and songwriting ability took a crowd that had never even heard of him before and turned them into a wildly cheering mob. These girls sitting behind me went and bought all of his CD's that they had for sale there before his set was even over. For anyone that wants to know, they were selling Morning Wood(Rugburns), One Left Shoe, and I think also the answering machine one from Scam-O-Rama records, but I'm not sure about the last because it was sold out after the show. Anyways, here was Steve Poltz's setlist: I Love Ya' (I think that's the name) Gold's Gym Guy 10 Chances Chair Song(I had never heard htis one before, it was great. This is the one that really got the audience into him.) Dog Doo BLues #47(from his answering machine CD) Everything About You Silver Lining ABC's Of Love Great Mystery Waterfalls Rosie(i think...a Tom Waitts song) Star Wars Song Most of these were done with Jewel's slide guitarist Doug Pettibone backing him up, and Jewel's keyboarder(I forget his name) singing backup vocals and giving Steve and Doug wine while they were busy playing. My only disappointment was that he didn't do Impala with Jewel, which he has apparently been doing at at least some of the other concerts. After a 50 minute wait or so Jewel came out looking absolutely stunning. She played Near You Always solo and then the band came out. Here is her setlist: Near You Always Deep Water w/band What's Simple Is True w/band Hands w/band Jupiter w/band YWMFM w/band and Steve singing with her on the chorus-it was very nice - -Story about bionic buns of steel woman that made her feel like a weakling in the workout room of her hotel. Morning Song Cold Song - -Story about a German reporter that wanted to know why Hitler loving little blue eyed boys is funny. Innocence Maintained Barcelona w/band Life Uncommon w/band Foolish Games Down So Long w/band Race Car Driver w/band -this is when she realy started to rock. I don't think most of the people there(definitely not the ones sitting around us) had ever heard Jewel really rock before, and I, for one, loved hearing her play some heavier stuff. She has the voice for it and I would like to see her do a little more rock on her next CD for variety. Down w/band Love Me Just Leave Me Alone w/band- I had never heard this before, and I really like it. Does anyone know if this has been on any of her promo CD's or any of the tapes out there that are available? WWSYS w/band Encore: Abscence Of Fear Angel Standing By Chime Bells After The Show Steve was at a place along the side wall where a fence opens up and he was signing stuff for people, but he only signed abotu 10 or 15 things before security cleared everyone out. I, being such a good planner, had my "Taking The World By Donkey" Rugburns CD handy. I was thinking about getting him to sign the One Left Shoe CD, but he had that on sale there, so anyone could have bought it. I figured he would appreciate and be more likely to sign something more rare, knowing I wasn't just some person that had run over to the souveneir stand real quick and come back. Sure enough when he saw it, his eyes lit up and he goes "hey, cool, you're a Rugburns fan?" And I was like," oh yeah, I'm a huge fan." Then I got my picture taken with him plus a few good up close shots Jewel never came out, but I suppose that's understandable since she would have been mobbed and I'm sure she had to get to wherever her next stop was in a hurry so she could get a little sleep before the show. If anyone has decent pictures from the concert here at the Gorge I would be willing to pay for copies though. I didn't have very many of Jewel that came out good. Recepticles will be set up at every venue in conjunction with Rock & Wrap It Up. They'll be distributing the food collected at each venue to shelters & foodbanks in that area. This is a very worthy cause & one hopefully all of you will contribute to, if you can. Thanks! Also, I've updated the 1999 Setlist Guide on Jewel's website. It now has every 1999 Jewel setlist through last week's California shows. I've continued including accurate setlists for all of Steve Poltz's sets & the VH1 Storytellers taping setlist is up as well. If you're into this stuff, stop by www.jeweljk.com & have a look. (From the main navigation page, go to the calendar. At bottom of the calendar screen, you'll find the setlist link.) All these things are viewable on the high end version. The low end version is usually delayed so I encourage anyone who's still using a pre-4.0 browser to upgrade if at all possible. It makes a huge difference on enjoying Jewel's site as well as most of the web these days. Many of the questions I'm recieving about Jewel's next album, the recent Merle Haggard sessions, Jupiter single, Woodstock are all answered on Jewel's site under headline news. You can also find out more about Rusted Root, who will be joining the tour soon, as they're our newest "featured artist". The calendar is totally up to date & a lot of new tour merchandise (including the newset tour t-shirts) are available for viewing & purchase at the webstore. Also, congatulations to the 5 winners on our last contest for free pairs of tickets. I know a few were EDAs. We'll be announcing another different contest soon! Stay tuned! I hope everyone who's attended shows are enjoying themselves. Hope to see a lot more of you soon. Thanks for helping with the food drive!
