Hi all, For everyone planning on doing the Pay Per View thing for Woodstock 99 (& those simply curious who are going), Jewel is scheduled to hit the main stage at 5:15PM EST on the third & final day, Sunday, July 25th. Of course this is Woodstock 99, so exact timing is tentative at best. Check your local cable TV service for all Pay Per View availability info. It will be available in most countries as both a package deal for all three days or individual days at a lower price. Sounds like a good justification for EDA house parties all over the planet! :-) MrBB ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Jul 1999 20:33:34 EDT From: Sean35RL@aol.com Subject: * the LAST word on setlists Well, I guess I'll try to finally put this topic to rest. As a springboard, here's a quote from Dave Matthews. The Dave Matthews Band is considered by most rock scholars to be one of the best live acts, if not the best live act, performing today. They tour constantly, are very innovative and fresh, they play 2.5 to 3 hour shows every single night, they sold out two shows at Giants Stadium and three shows Veterans Stadium on their most recent tour, and you can see them two nights in a row and hear completely different songs both nights with few repeats. Here's the quote in question. I think it is very relevant to the Jewel setlist situation that has been the center of attention and debate recently on the list. An interviewer asks Dave: "When you're onstage every night, how do you keep the music fresh?" To which Dave replies: "We switch songs around constantly. If you're playing the same thing every night, you're not performing--you're imitating yourself." Let me repeat that. If you play the same songs every night(no matter what songs they are) you are imitating yourself. You are not a performer, you are a jukebox playing your own "greatest hits." This stands in the face of everything good Jewel used to represent: spontaneity, originality, creativity. So that is why the whole setlist problem is so disturbing to me, and other fans of Jewel's music. It's not because we're afraid of change or don't want her to change or anything like that. Change is good when it is growth, when it is moving forward. But imitating yourself, being a human jukebox, that isn't change, that isn't growth. It is regression. It is a step backwards, not forwards. It does not touch people's mind or hearts or souls. That is all, Sean Hooks ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Jul 1999 21:18:00 EDT From: CloudWingz@aol.com Subject: * RWTD and other stuff- IMPORTANT stuff from the source! Hey Angels! Well, well, well...I'm back to the list- yay for me. Anywayz, I thought I should let you guys know- my sister works for Universal Studios, and I went and visited her on Saturday, and she brought up the concert I went to on the 26th. So we were talking for a while about Jewel (also Steve Poltz- I told her he was on the Notting Hill soundtrack, cuz that's a Universal picture, and so later she gave me a copy of it- the version of "Everything About You" is SOOOO GOOD! So I recommend at least LISTENING to it- it's an amazing remix.), and she started ralking about RWTD. She said it was a REALLY good movie, and Jewel is actually quite a good actress. She said it's a little hard to take, in that "Saving Private Ryan" sort of way, but it's a really good movie. She also said, and here's the important part, that it was SUPPOSED to come out during the holidays, but it's changing hands, and it probably won't be released by Universal. Instead it is going to be released by Gramercy, and so it will most likely come out later than expected! Doesn't that blow? It blows extra hard for me, cuz I was looking forward to getting a whole load of free RWTD promo stuff, like my sister always gets for me. But NO, I don't know anyone who works for Gramercy :) HEY! At this moment I am talking to Jason Mraz. EEE! Squeal. He's an amazing musician, if anybody saw him at Newbreak before the Jewel show at the EDA gathering (I wasn't there, darnit), and at the show, and last Friday. He'll be at Twiggs on Thursday, and at Newbreak again on Friday. Ha what a good fan I am, putting in plugs whenever I can :) But seriously- go see. If you're in San Diego, at least. Well, that was all I had to say...it's nice being back on the list again, even though Mike has informed me that the list is in ANOTHER uproar about Jewel's eyeliner...oh well, I happen to have this knack for re-joining the list during just such fights...well, here's my two cents- we're gonna love her no matter what she does, because we are big enough fans to fill our mailboxes everyday with discussion about her newest pair of shoes, so I think we should just let her change like good friends do, because it's not like we're ever gonna decide we aren't fans anymopre because of her new developments in make-up. Well, anywayz, I need to go tell my friends about talking to Jason, so they can squeal like me :) ~Jenny (JASON MRAZ'S NUMBER ONE FAN!) I'm new (again) to the list and can't wait for the show. I'll be in the 13th row myself...but after reading all the posts lately, I kinda wonder what we should expect...I mean, I've always thought that Jewel was a very talented and beautiful artist, but it seems that a lot of people that consider themselves fans are becoming disenchanted...I don't follow her the way most EDA's do, but everyone has to realize that the bigger a musician becomes, that they have to change and grow with that noteriety..unfortunately, it does mean that normal guys like me have no chance in Hades of ever meeting her and accept that she may have a setlist (like just about every other artist who has a heavy touring schedule) to preserve continuity...regardless, I can't wait to look into her angelic face as she sings YWMFM....peace. When I first arrived I was kinda sad because my mom and dad were going to be coming to the concert, but on Saturday my mom got knocked off a horse and broke her Pelvis, and I just about ran her over with my horse after she fell off, she was really lucky. So her and my dad had to stay home. :( So everyone pray for my mom to get better quick! But about the concert. Towards the end Jewel did her usual "come up to the stage". So right when I heard that I jumped out of my 6th row seat on the side and hurdled a blue wall thing and got just to the right of this little box thing, right behind the camera. Jewel came back out for the oncore song and she reached down and touched my hand WOO! But wait it gets better. So she finished singing that song, and then I jumped up onto the box thing I was on my hands and knees on the stage when I looked up and there was an angel (Jewel) :) she had her hand out for me to grab and looked very happy and surprised someone was coming on stage, I reached out and grabbed it and SHE started to pull ME up on stage when, a bouncer grabbed my arm and yanked me back into the crowd, he was yelling "Get out of here!" BLA BLA BLA. But that is what happened, it was almost like Jewels goodbye to me because next wednesday I leave on a mormon mission to Fiji for 2 years so I'll be off the list for that long, and one stupid rule us missionaries have is no music including Jewel. Bummer, think I may have to smuggle some with me. So Mr. BB or someone who see's Jewel tell her that the mormon boy who jumped on stage is SO IN LOVE with her, and her small little hands which I held for those couple of seconds! And tell her if I only could have got on stage I would have given her the sweetest kiss she has ever felt. (good job to you BB... you were so close!!!) anyway, this fine young man leaves for a mission soon so if any of you know or hear of a way he can get his hands on a tape, please either write to him or me personally if you would like to help ok? thanks a lot people, and good luck BB on your trip. john ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Jul 1999 11:56:14 EDT From: JMHuber99@aol.com Subject: * Amazing grace... How does someone describe one of the greatest experiences to happen to them over the course of their lifetime? OH MY GOD! i just got home from the concert in SLC... unbelievable. anyone and everyone i know will receive word of the spirit tour when it comes through their town. thats it... hands down it was the most awesome concert ive ever been to. i hope that each and every concert down the road on this blessed tour goes as well as the one did tonight folks, and i hope that each one of you gets to see and be part of the magic that she brings to the ears of everyone listening. everything thats bitched about and argued and driven into the ground on this list is totally blown away when you see her and feel her presence on stage people. her clothes, her makeup, even when she tells someone to shutup (which happened tonight by the way...) is invisible just because her voice makes it all seem unimportant. i read everyone's comments and wishes and i can feel the love that you all have for her, and i cant say enough how much i hope everyone gets to see her, especially someone like myself who is a first timer in seeing her live because it makes her all that much better. im sure someone else who was there will describe word for word what happened at the concert, what she wore (which was beautiful) and what shade her lip gloss was, and i must admit that i got caught up in the moment of the music and lost count of the songs and setlist, but it doesnt matter. if you wanna know anything, feel free to mail me personally, ill answer anything. also, i may have contact with someone with an audio tape of the concert and pics, so if you want it, let me know. i may have it by tomorrow! ok, time to put on the music and go to bed folks. love to all the angels, and i must say i really feel like a member of this list now that ive heard her in person. i feel like i just heard her again for the first time... awesome. ok, ill shutup. adios angels... john michael a convinced angel (convinced that she is truly an angel that is...)
