It was my first time in LA & San Diego. I think it sort of sums up the EDA experience for me. Maybe it will give a little insight to the newer EDA's into what we're about.... "I'm sitting on the plane home from LA and my eyes are tearing - not because I'm sad to leave (although I am) but because my heart is so full. The LA show is playing on my headphones and I'm thinking back over the last few days - my heart has been revived by the warmth and caring of a group of people who were strangers to me a year ago, some were strangers a month ago, some a week ago. Yet now I consider them some of my closest friends". Amy ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Jul 1999 22:04:47 -0700 From: Rowdy A White Subject: * NJC: Missionary of Jewel EDAs.. Well, as Ya'll may know, I'm stuck here in Paris, and these poor heathens seems to know naught of Jewel, Steve or of the Rugburns or of Atz (ya'll need to buy Atz's new album, it is good from what little i have heard)... I have done my best to introduce these artists to this village by often requesting songs on the radio (some success with Jewel, but with poltize and the 'burns I am met with blank stares), Also by driving around with their music blaring on the radio..(At sonic a girl ask me who I was listening to when she heard "1000 Miles Away" and I proceeded to preach of the goodness of Jewel; not unlike a door to door Jehovah's witness... Well my missionaries in the wilderness has paid off. Last Week I was browsing through the used CDs at Hastings after I got finished moving all of Jewel's Cds and Steve's up to the front displays, when suddenly I came across three US YWMFM singles hidden behind some Janet Jackson CDs. Owning this already, I put then in a better place and went about my work.... Tonight I returned to find that they were gone and not to be found. Curious, I inquired about this, and a young employee said that she had seen them, but one by one they disappeared... So I guess I am doing some good here...... Just wanted to share Rowdius "mommy deer...dead... baby deer, Alive!!!...." ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 03 Jul 1999 19:52:05 PDT From: ~* cymbaline *~ Subject: * Jewel changed, so what? (long message) Roel wrote: >>>Hey EDAs,I have just one question: Can we please stop the discussion about the "changing Jewel" and talk about the person she IS and she WANTS to be herself???It's getting VERY boring.<<< After a few months of missing the Jewel from a few years ago, who would strum her acoustic guitar, always introducing new songs, I've decided that so what she's changed? I'm kind of getting sick of hearing about it, At first it was an okay discussion, but now it's getting old. She's changed, (and basically just *musically*) so let's get on w/ our lives. I don't know if it has occured to anyone, but almost all artists go through changes. Listen to Sheryl Crow's "All I Wanna Do" (her 1st single, correct me if I'm wrong) and her one of her most recent "Anything But Down". They're hardly alike. She's progressed. Pink Floyd is another example. They're 1st album "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" is stranger than anything I've heard, but in those 20 something years they were recording, each album progressed away from that exreme strangeness a little. "Momentary Lapse of Reason" and "Divison Bell" are nothing like they're earliest works, (maybe upon losing Waters), but they're still Pink Floyd, and they're still great! Almost all artists go through some changes, but it doesn't make then any different. They're still the same people, doing what they love. making music, and making money for it. Now that I think about it, this "new" Jewel is okay. She's still writing inspirational lyrics, she still has an amazing voice, but she's doing alot more musically now. (Plus, when I saw her on SNL performing Hands and DSL for the first time months ago, I thought she looked pretty phat holding that electric guitar. Les Paul was it?) Change is good. There wouldnt be any interesting music if all singers/bands stayed the same. Take Hootie and the Blowfish, for example. As much as I love them, (especially they're love songs), All three of their albums sound exactly the same. I hear the Wallflowers next album is going to be more hard rock than their last two albums. I say, "Go Jakob!" (On w/ that change!) So, bottom line is, we're fans of Jewel, right? So let's BE fans of Jewel, no matter if she's playing an accordian and having a monkey dance, doing bird calls, singing the Alphabet Song and Three Blind Mice, or better yet, playing w/ a band and enjoying herself. If she's enjoying herself, can't we enjoy her too? Sorry this was long. I'll shut up now, and go back into hiding. Peace, cymbaline - -- I won't be denied this time before I go out of my mind over matters Got my foot on a ladder and I'm climbing up to the moon. - --- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 04 Jul 1999 03:41:55 GMT From: "\"ßrian\" H." I met SO many EDAs, including MrBB, Dennis Harris, Rizioule, and of course NEDRA!! I haven't had a better weekend/mimi-vacation ever. Everyone I met was so nice to me, and went so out of their way to make me feel welcme, comfortable, and to help me out. A special thank you to Rizioule, Lori, and Jason for giving Mike (my friend the guitar player) and I the amazing opportunity to play for all of you in BOTH San Diego and Irvine. And the warm and positive response to my oroginal music was so inspiring and heartwarming. Thank you for the nice things and compliments you posted to the list too!! I had so much fun with everyone at the San Diego Jewel concert, and at Denny's afterwards!! EDAs are so amazing, and I love all of you. I am so proud and happy to be an EDA, and I hope to keep in touch with everyone I have had the immense privelege of meeting and talking with!! Hello everyone, Thank to you to those angels who wrote positive comments about my music to the list!! It was so wonderful to play for all of you, and I was so happy to hear that everyone liked what we played. Since Andrea requested it, I wanted to give everyone the opportunity to get a copy of our demo CD. Our name is Sweet Duration. I sing, and my good friend Mike, whom many met last weekend, plays acoustic guitar. We have many orogonal songs we have written together. 3 of them we made onto a demo CD. So, if you are interested in a copy of our demo CD, please e-mail me and we can arrange something. Most likely, $5 would cover the cost of the balnk CD, postage, and printing the cover artwork/CD booklet with our picture in it, and our website info and names and so forth. Thanks again for the opportunity! I love you all! "Gold's Gym Guy" really is from Steve's days with the 'Burns.. It appears on the Rugburns Album, "Morning Wood" and I highly recommend it, though as with most 'Burns stuff, it is kinda hard to find.. Used CDs stores would be a place to start if you live in a big town, though ebay would be your best bet... Also, on the Rugburn's Cd "Mommy I'm sorry" in the special thanks they listed Jewel as "Jewel Kilchur" kinda odd..... BTW (I'm still catching up with this mail) Sean, I would enjoy it friday if Jewel sings Three Blind Mice, Cumbaya, The ABC Song... in fact if I for some reason get to request anything, I am going to request Three Blind mice, so I hope the EDAs are going to record, so we can send you the angelfood of it... (Before we spark an war like we did in March, I am joking.... =Þ ) Anyway Ya'll be safe, and expect even more posts from me Rowdy The ditchdigging angel that has to pay long distance charges to check his email because this sorry little hamlet has no local access numbers, who is going to see jewel in a week, who is out of breath with his angel name... I have never been a really big fan of hers, but for some reason me and my sister decided to go tonight, and I'm sure glad we did, because it was an incredible show. We bought tickets only 2 days before, and we had LAST ROW on the UPPER BALCONY far far to the side. The worst seats in the house! However, after the opening act we were able to move below to fill up an empty section so we wound up sitting about 12 rows away from the stage, on the side, but still very nice seats! Near the end of the show everyone rushed the stage and we got right in front. Close enough to touch her! It was a big leap from back row, so we were happy... I was a little dissapointed I didn't get to hear my favorites (adrien, fat boy, sometimes it be that way, last dance rodeo, don't) but she played a really nice set anyways. And she played for TWO HOURS! Steve Poltz opened, and he is actually Jewel's guitar player and backup singer in the band. he was very very funny, and he also played a really nice set. He came on stage drinking a bottle of beer - he also had a bottle of wine, and more beer on stage. I think he was half shot by the end of his performance. He played an acoustic guitar and sang. He was very good. His setlist was: Now's Not the Right time For Love Ten Chances Ferme La Bouche Silver Lining Everything About You The Great Mystery Doo Dog Blues Haliburn Street Star Wars The most memorable song was his second to last - a song about his childhood called Haliburn Street (or something like that) it was really beautiful. In between the songs he talked a lot and he was VERY funny. All his stories involved being in jail or drinking beer. After this we were in our new seats, and it was time for Jewel the thing that was cool about her opening is that it was no big show. She simply walked on stage by herself and picked up the guitar and played. There was no great background set either which was cool for a big place like GM place... it seemed more an intimate setting than a large arena. There was a background video screen which projected a closeup of jewel taken from about 4 different cameras which faded between each other. Really nice for seeing facial expressions and stuff. NEAR YOU ALWAYS: this was a pretty good opener. She started by singing the chorus a capella, very sad and slow - then she brought the guitar in and sang along. It was nice. She looked stunning too. Her hair was long and blonde and shiny, and she was wearing a tight purple leathery tank top, and black leathery pants. She also had some pretty funky shoes on. But she was gorgeous. DEEP WATER: The band came in for this song (and all the songs that followed) which is one of my favorites from the new album. The band was really good - Two guitar players (Poltz played acoustic), a drummer, a bass player, and a keyboard player. Jewel did NOT play guitar while the band was on (She played an electric along with them for a few songs) which suprised me because she is very good, but this actually gave her a lot more freedom on stage to dance and move around. Poltz did a great job on the acoustic guitar either way. His playing was a little louder and more precise than Jewel's. WHAT'S SIMPLE IS TRUE: not one of my favorite songs - It is a little too slow on the album, but in a concert setting it worked really well. She did some really powerful improv singing towards the end. HANDS: I was suprised to hear it so early in the set (AND the fourth slow song in a row to start off the show) but it was well done. The woman next to me trying in a pitiful atempt to sing along got on my nerves though. JUPITER: She introduced it as a "new version" of the song. It was basically the same, but a little faster with a cool hip hop drum beat. She danced around a lot durring this one, and this was where I noticed what a powerful, diverse voice she has! She has an amazing range - she can go really high and loud, yet hit very low notes right on. She is also really great at doing improv ranting at the end of the songs. She did a lot of this durring the concert and it was very impressive. It's nice to see her change around the songs live and not sing them exactly the way they are on the recordings - so many artists do that, and it's boring. Jewel did a great job keeping the songs fresh and alive during this show. After JUPITER she told a story (a very LONG story... it was over 10 minutes at least) about some time her and steve went on a drug bust with some police and found a bunch of pot. She was VERY funny when she told this story. She has a cute way about her, and she responded well to the audiences cries and screams. She even made fun of a few people for being so enthousiastic. YOU WERE MEANT FOR ME: It's clear that her and steve got SOMETHING going on cause they sang this one together as a duet so sweetly! She leaned over to his microphone durring the choruses and they sung together. It was really sweet. I THOUGHT I SAW YOU LAST NIGHT: This is one of steve's songs, but they wrote it together. The band left the stage, and jewel and steve sang this together. It was also very cute how they leaned towards one microphone and sang it and looked at each other. Steve must have been very drunk at this point cause he had more beer with him, and he was smiling very happily. INNOCENCE MAINTAINED: For these next four solo songs jewel played the guitar and sang them without the band. I know that at this point in her set you can expect anything cause she has so many songs, and I was really hoping to hear FAT BOY or SOMETIMES IT BE THAT WAY, but this was a nice one. She sang it very slowly with a lot of feeling. ENTER FROM THE EAST: Honestly, this was the lowpoint of the concert. I was really looking forward to her solo section, but this song was just too slow, and it dragged on a bit. For some reason this song leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I don't like the way it's presented. MORNING SONG: This was a nice one, and a welcome suprise. The audiance really seemed to dig it. GREY MATTER: She introduced it as a new song, and I recognized the title from the jewel website. It was very slow, but pretty. BARCELONA: the band returned for this one, and it was one of the hilights! Very well sung by Jewel and at the loud choruses the lights would go on full blast. It was really powerful. She was practically screaming at the end it was amazing. LIFE UNCOMMON: Wow. This was the second hilight of the night. It started off very slow and pretty, but she got wild towards the end! Her voice was so soulfull and jazzy... she really belted it out. I'm not crazy about the recording of it, but live it was awesome. They jammed the ending out for awhile - I was very impressed with this one. FOOLISH GAMES: A very quiet subtle performance. Just her and the keyboard player. She stood on a little peninsula which extended from the stage, so she was RIGHT in front of the people in front row. DOWN SO LONG: This is where the concert started to really rock. The songs before were all very very good, but they were all fairly laid back. Down so long is the new single, and it's played a lot here, and the audiance really enjoyed it. DOWN: I'm not familiar with this song, but it was also very good. It got people dancing. LOVE ME JUST LEAVE ME ALONE: this is where people started rushing the stage - so did we! We wound up getting RIGHT up front and center! It was so incredible to watch her up so close. This song kicked ass! WHO WILL SAVE YOUR SOUL: this one jammed for at least 10 minutes, probably closer to 15. It went on and on. It was great though! She started it very sexy and slow - sang the whole song, then the guitar player started doing solos, and jewel would imitate them with her voice, and then the guitar player would have to mimick jewel's voice. It was really really cool to watch. It's neat to see some actual jamming going on at a big concert like this! Jewel left stage near the end, and the band brought the roof down with a big loud finish. ENCORE: ABSENCE OF FEAR: since some people left thinking the concert was over, me and my sister managed to get RIGHT in front of the little peninsula for the last encore, and when jewel came out and stood on it I was literally within an arms reach of her and looking up at her. For me this was the hilight of the show. It was such a beautiful song, and to see her sing it right before my eyes was so powerful. If anyone says WHERE you sit at a concert does not matter they are WRONG. That song would not have had the same effect on me if we had been in our original top balcony back row seats. It was really incredible to be up so close, and after we all reached out and she grabbed everyones hands. It was very cool. ANGEL STANDING BY: Me and my sister's favorite one. She played it solo under very simple white lights - It was beautiful, and a really good closer because it left us feeling sort of happy and mellow about the whole thing, although I was hoping to hear her yodel, but she didn't. She also didn't do Chime Bells at the end as she usually does. Angel Standing By worked well as a last song though and she still did a very long set. Anyways, overall it was an awesome show - Jewel is incredible live, and I'd go see her again for sure... I hope this gets some of you to go out and see her concert... matt ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #373 ***************************
