I think it's fine for someone to evolve in >their person or music. I also do not think that this is her fault. A lot >of it has to do with Atlantic Records. When a recording outfit sees someone >like Jewel who turns heads with a smash debut album, the $$$$ blind their >sight. Much of her new image, from my view is an attempt to turn Jewel into >a "diva," to make her larger than life, and in turn a larger profit turner. >This is where I have my problem. If this is her decision, hey, so be it. >That's her prerogative to change! It just doesn't seem like it was. With this I completely agree, that's what is seems to me too, I think that she likes having the band and all, but would just as much like to play soloacoustic. For all you discussers, I ain't saying I know Jewel in and out, no, I only know her from outside, but from what I can see, and what I've experienced with record companies, I really do think that all the "change" is not all Jewel's choice... > 2)The music: > Once again, Atlantic meddling a bit too much. It seemed >overproduced and contrived - musically. The content was there, but the >simple fact that Jewel is listed in the credits as playing guitar on 1 >song!!? Part of her, or any other artists individuality is their style. Yes, again I completely agree, they've realy overproduced the songs, as I said (sorry I keep repeating it, but I just have a hard time expressing myself, and I like you all to know how I feel) I miss the spark in the songs on spirit, on the tour they were back (at least a whole lot of 'm), and *I* think that that's just because of the overproducing. >Although she's only been playing for a handful of years, she has a very >distinctive playing style. By not playing on the album, the music falls >further and further away from what I think is her "style." well, although I don't disagree I won't agree either, I think it's not good labeling someone with a style, genre or anything. I think you should let people do, wear, express what they want (as long as their not hurting anybody else). Just like fashion, I don't get that, some kind of guy in the fashion business just decides that for instance yellow is the collor of the year 1999, and instantly everything is yellow, it's just plain hipocracy. >I personally >like the songs on Spirit, but not the way they were produced. exactly, that's just the way I feel. > So I'm not misunderstood, I don't have a problem with change. For >all that can relate, where would Dylan be if he stayed a solo act for all >these years? Can you sing about change and new beginnings, while staying >the same? No, you'd be the world's biggest hypocrite. Change is good. >Change is needed, but not for the sake of change and not because someone >else wants to change you. > If this was all Jewel's doing because that's where she was heading, >ignore all the prior comments. But, it sounds like there's more to it than >that. Yep, change to me is good, but only change motivated by you own doing, and not someone elses. It only >>matters how the songs in any setlist are performed. What are you out of your mind!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? Sure, a setlist of: Three Blind Mice, Cumbaya, The ABC Song, etc is great just as long as they're performed well. Yeah. Right. Mr BB is a great benefit to this list and I know his comment was intended only to refute some of the negative comments about Jewel's setlists that have been being posted as of late, but really, to say that it doesn't matter what songs are performed is absolutely ludricous, ridiculous, preposterous, and downright laughable. Yeah, it doesn't matter what songs she plays. Ya know what, if she did a whole concert of just humming showtunes, that's great. Or how about she comes out and plays an accordian while a monkey dances to it for two hours. Or she practices her bird calls. You know what, it's all fine as long as it's performed well. And you know what, shame on anyone who would criticize Jewel for doing any of those things because then you're not a real fan. If you're a real Jewel fan you love and adore everything and anything she does and that's that. And if for some reason you wanted to express any form of criticism about her whatsoever, you should be banned from the list because this list is for happy Jewel fans who just love her to pieces no matter what she does. Shaking his head at the world's ignorance and now realizing why the boy bands and such sell so many records. Geez, when adults are this moronic it's no wonder their kids are even worse, even more slaves to the commercial blitz. But it's good to see why total garbage sells, at the record stores and at the movie theaters, because we shouldn't care about the whether something is good or bad. No. It could be total crap. As long as that crap is "well-performed." Sean Hooks ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 03 Jul 1999 11:05:30 -0400 From: Mike Connell Subject: * Re: Jewel Lyrics Mailing List! As list owner of jewel@smoe.org , I am not at all understanding of why such a new list is needed, however perhaps I am missing something. It certainly has happened before :-) Having said that, I just want to clarify to all here at Jewel@smoe.org, that there has never been a problem here with folks posting lyrics or tabs, nor asking for lyrics or tabs. It has always been alright to do so and always will be. Not once have I ever received a negative email about lyric or tab postings. (not that Gerrit portrayed that sentiment, as he clearly did not, but I just want all to know that there has not been a problem at Jewel@smoe concerning lyrics & tabs, in case any of you might have drawn that conclusion) Mike :-) * If you are new to the Jewel list and need a helping hand, * or have a burning question about Jewel and/or the list, * The Jewel/EveryDay Angels List Homepage & Guide is at: * http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup * Many basic/common Jewel and list questions can be answered there :-) * * If you can't find the answer on the page have any list related * questions, please feel free to email me at ducksoup@spectra.net * or you can IM me on either of the AOL names below: * DuckOfPrey or WhyADuck55 and/on AOL or AOL Instant Messenger ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Jul 1999 11:19:23 EDT From: ABershaw@aol.com Subject: * Re: albums & setlists opinion In a message dated 7/3/99 2:04:50 AM, Sean35RL writes: <>> I should have expected Sean to take my simple statement to ridiculous non-comprehending extremes & then use that as another excuse to rant at everyone. My comment stands & particularly applies to all those bands & artists that Sean previously gave as examples of integrity. It really affected the honest list as this was. I wasn't able to catch a glimp of Jewel when she firstly broke through with her first album Pieces of You. But after hearing the song You were meant for me, i noticed a whisper going trough my vains and i suddenly realized this is the artist that makes you happy and can touch you with her voice and lyrics. I really am very delighted about Mike Connell's post on the list, i really get sick of the negative tedens of the Jewel-list lately. It seems that the american eda's of Jewel can't anymore appreciate what Jewel is doing. I only can tell you one thing : Jewel deserved and earned all the attention she has gotten from sponsors or other things she encourages to do by herself. Who are we fans of Jewel to judge what is good and what is wrong what Jewel is doing. I really think she has the right to make her own decisions, and i can tell you that she is happy with the choices she makes in her life. Maybe you are too demanding as fans, and don't appreciate her wonderful music anymore, and make for yourself cloudhigh expecations of how a concert of Jewel should be, or how she has to respond to her fans. I only can tell you , after going to 11 concerts of Jewel , that she is doing her uttermost best at the concerts, and i enjoyed and was enthusiatic to hear her voice and lyrics at the Spirit tour. I think you should change your attitude before going to a concert, try to think , hey wow i am going to see Jewel live, and hear her sing and hopefully do some nice stories. But instead you are only comparing Jewel to her outcoming in 1997 . Personally i don't like that comparisation, as Jewel grows and hopefully you as fan grows. So you have to change your opinion about Jewel and go with another mood to the concerts. If you think you can be the judge of what Jewel should do or not do , than i think you are playing a 'Foolish game' that you can't win. Jewel will always follow her heart, and i believe Jewel's innoncence has been maintained. And this is something i can't say of some of you fans, some maybe have to feel embarissed and try to go to listen to other music, and stop making the Jewel-list a digest of only negative posts. If you don't like Jewel, than don't comment on this list. Or at least not with a regurlar annoying interval, i hope you will try to keep this in mind. Every european Jewel concert i attended myself was wonderful. I have been enjoying the band, Steve poltz as opener, and the whole bandplay and the beautiful voice of jewel at the concerts. You should be very lucky that you can go to see Jewel in the states for at least 10 weeks, i really think you should be proud to see Jewel. In Europe she is still a little bit unknown, and the venues here were at maximum seated to 1500 people, and sometimes 300/400 people. I really felt the excitement and the intimacy of the concerts of jewel, it was really a cool event in my life to see Jewel front row seats at a lot of european concerts. I was thrilled to only get a personal signed postcard by Jewel for me where she told me that she loved the support i gave her at the european concerts. I was too shy and full of admiration for Jewel to enter her easily. I was so fillfilled to have the chance to talk with her once about her music. That really made my day. I told her how much i liked her music, and that i really adore her lyrics. She was so happy to hear that, and i was lucky to have met the alaskan singer. I think some ofyou american eda's only have expectations that can't be fillfilled to yourself. So try to keep this post in mind, and listen to this dutch eda his advice, go out, meet other eda's , talk about jewel's music and enjoy her concert to the fullest. i think that is what a visit of a concert is all about.. i hope some of you have learnt something as word of wisdom for some of you american eda's attitude. Bye, Michiel the grateful Jewel angel and fan from holland & founder of the first dutch eda tapes. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Jul 1999 12:35:42 EDT From: SWTHRT9758@aol.com Subject: * Every Day Angels????? I think not Yes, I know you all have your opinions, but if you're just going to criticize and complain about Jewel you should really think about what's lacking in your life. Remember when we all use to say, " I'm going to stick by Jewel no matter what happens, I'm going to be an EDA forever." Was this a conditional statement? I guess so because everyone seems to be putting Jewel down and getting upset over her. Well, if you guys saw Jewel at Vh1 you would think differently, her songs were pure, she had a setlist but didn't seem to go by it, and she wasn't all done up (except for some powder). Jewel loves the EDA because she knows we stand by her no matter what! So if you're not for her, you really shouldn't be an Eda. She thinks of the EDA as different and we inspire her and keep her going. What would she think if she read some of the posts, remember she is human and does have feelings. And wasn't the DSL import from UK a pose from Rolling Stone she did? My point is if she keeps this up I think her next single (which I think will be Abscence of Fear) there's a pic in Vogue (1/99 when she was on the cover) and the shot on 168 could be used, since this seems to be the pattern.
