Hey! So, I looked at the tour merchandise they have shown at jeweljk.com, and I'm sure that's not all of it, but with the shirts shown there (on the site) - it's pretty much all shirts for females. There is one shown there for male/female, but I was wondering whether they had more at the concert for both (guys and girls). I hope I don't sound sexist or anything here...I kinda feel like I do. I suppose I could buy some baby tees, but... Anywho, thanks to anyone that can help! Hi all! Well, I'm not usually one to join in the discussion of the issues that come up time and time again on this list, I just like to sit back a take in everyone else's opinions. But, seeing as though I have just found some interesting information, I thought I'd jump onto the "lack of spontaneity" band wagon. I've just purchased a book, found totally by chance, called 'Pop Culture presents the story of...JEWEL' by Mark Bego. Same old information with a little more detail and some really nice pics. What I'm getting at here is a passage in the book where Jewel talks about her Dad, Atz: "'He never wrote a setlist - he said you had to read the crowd's mood.' She adpoted this same theory for playing to a crowd. Today she proudly proclaims, 'I never write a setlist.'" Now, this book was published last year just before the release of Spirit - Hmmm...something to think about. While I'm here, and have nothing else to do, I thought I'd also give my two cents about the overtold story thing. This may be pretty boring so if you are still reading feel free to stop now if you don't want to hear anything you already have. Like others on the list, I was not an EDA when I saw Jewel in concert for the first time this past February. All I knew of her were POY and Spirit and I certainly didn't know about the trillions of songs that don't appear on the albums. I'd only ever heard her talk for about two seconds on the radio so I had no idea what she was like. When she told the Mexico/drug bust story I loved it! I saw what was an apparently spontaneous and witty personality. Now, it may be a little tedious for some who have heard the story a million times, but for those who haven't, and the majority of the audience I might add, it was really nice and entertaining. I still find all her stories great and listen to the ones I have on tape all the time. I don't see it as a planned gimmick or something that she *has* to do. I think she knows that it's entertaining and that people like to hear the origins of a song, and that she wants to entertain and inform and share with as many people as she can. I know when something exciting or interesting happens to me I tell everyone I see, and usually more than once. It's exactly the same. Anyway, I've babbled on for long enough. Thanks for reading, Take Care Jess ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Jul 1999 13:57:43 +0100 From: "Ian Conroy" Subject: * Spirit stand-up My brother spotted a Spirit stand-up display (about 3x2 ft, the b&w pic from the album cover) in the corner of a local record store today, and persuaded them to sell it him for 2 pounds, as he was buying a cd too. But it's good to be back in the loop. A few things that have been bugging me about Jewel in general. Excuse me if these topics have been beaten into the ground, but I wouldn't know. 1)Jewel's departure from her image and new image: Don't get me wrong here. I think it's fine for someone to evolve in their person or music. I also do not think that this is her fault. A lot of it has to do with Atlantic Records. When a recording outfit sees someone like Jewel who turns heads with a smash debut album, the $$$$ blind their sight. Much of her new image, from my view is an attempt to turn Jewel into a "diva," to make her larger than life, and in turn a larger profit turner. This is where I have my problem. If this is her decision, hey, so be it. That's her prerogative to change! It just doesn't seem like it was. 2)The music: Once again, Atlantic meddling a bit too much. It seemed overproduced and contrived - musically. The content was there, but the simple fact that Jewel is listed in the credits as playing guitar on 1 song!!? Part of her, or any other artists individuality is their style. Although she's only been playing for a handful of years, she has a very distinctive playing style. By not playing on the album, the music falls further and further away from what I think is her "style." I personally like the songs on Spirit, but not the way they were produced. So I'm not misunderstood, I don't have a problem with change. For all that can relate, where would Dylan be if he stayed a solo act for all these years? Can you sing about change and new beginnings, while staying the same? No, you'd be the world's biggest hypocrite. Change is good. Change is needed, but not for the sake of change and not because someone else wants to change you. If this was all Jewel's doing because that's where she was heading, ignore all the prior comments. But, it sounds like there's more to it than that. That's about all I have to rave about right now. Good to be back! Well she does now. That was an excellent point you made in Jewel's quote talking about what she learned from her father about performing: "'He never wrote a setlist - he said you had to read the crowd's mood.' She adpoted this same theory for playing to a crowd. Today she proudly proclaims, 'I never write a setlist.'" You used Jewel's own quote to expose her hypocrisy. Well done. Now, that said, I know most bands and artists use written setlists. I'm not saying Jewel should just go out there on stage and wing it every night. But hell, she's a writer, a little more creativity in the setlists would be nice. I mean, she has well over a hundred songs to choose from and her setlists of late have been rote, boring, and repetitive. Compare this to say a The Dave Matthews Band who has only maybe 50 songs to pick from and they never play the same setlist night to night, their shows vary greatly. I saw them earlier this summer two nights in a row and only one of their songs was played both nights. Could you imagine Jewel doing that? I used to, but not anymore. And again, the same holds true for tons of other artists and bands of Jewel's generation who do write their own setlists but vary them greatly from night to night. The kinds of "bands" who play the same setlists night to night are, on MTV Total Request a lot. And that's not good company to be in. Later, Sean PS: For a good commentary on the bland and boring stagnation in the world of pop/rock music, check out the interview with Tom Petty in the most recent Rolling Stone(with Nicole Kidman cover), he has a lot of pertinent and meaningful things to say. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 02 Jul 1999 18:42:26 GMT From: "\"ßrian\" H." Here's what i think on the subject of jewel's changing: First of all, i think she's changing for herself, because people change. That's their decision. But then there's the setlists, and little things like that, that she says she 'isn't' going to change, or doesn't want to change, and then she does change them. SO i keep thinking about this more and more, and it's not necessarily only Jewel; any other people are changing too. In the music business, however, i believe it has something to do with the recording company's rules or regulations (Atlantic...). The setlist thing, it's not important to me. What i look for in what i listen to is about lyrics and putting music to it. But I have this movie, Bandwagon, about this band (from raleigh, my hometown, with a guy in it from a band called the Connells, from raleigh too) that wants to get signed, and there's this controversy within the band about whether they should sign or not because they don't want the company to change their style. Maybe Jewel's writing setlists for Atlantic, or because it's in her contract, or they made her do it, or they convinced her to do it, but she doesn't have to follow it exactly. I know my pops went to a concert one time (allmans) and he had been sent the setlist, and none of the songs on the setlist were played, except for one or two. So maybe i'm out in left field (as usual), but i hope this made sense to someone... I also must emphasize that it isn't the songs themselves (at least not to me), no the songs are still great, and I ain't that narrow minded, I like a lot of music, from classic to rock to country to folk to dance to metal, a lot, and I do like spirit, but as I said I miss the spark. I went to two of her concerts here, and they were absolutely amazing, all the songs had it again (the spark), new and old, but it just seems to me that her new album is overproduced, it's to static to me. One more thing, I do notice that the negativity on this list gets far more attention than positivity, let me remind you that that is the media's job, not ours...
