Jewel duets with Merle Haggard "For The Record What happens when a barefoot, breathy folk princess teams up with the original "Okie From Muskogee?" We'll find out when the results of Jewel's studio session with country legend Merle Haggard surface. According to a spokesperson for Haggard, Jewel recorded two duets with the 60-year-old singer-songwriter (who's perhaps best known for his 1969 anti-hippie anthem "Okie") last Thursday in his Northern California studio. The Jewel-enhanced new versions of Haggard's classic tracks "Silver Wings" and "That's the Way Love Goes" will appear on "Merle Haggard: For the Record," a two-CD, 43-song collection from the man who was as well known for his law-breaking, booze-guzzling exploits as he was for his C&W hits. For the most part, the collection will feature Haggard's re-recordings of his own previously released songs. Other guests on the project will include Willie Nelson, Brooks & Dunn, and Alabama, a band that's enjoying a crossover hit of its own thanks to a collaboration with 'N Sync. "For the Record" will be released on the new RCA-distributed label TBA Records, and it's scheduled to hit stores on August 24. A pay-per-view special of the same name will be broadcast live from Las Vegas sometime in October. -- MTV.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Jul 1999 10:41:53 EDT From: Jewel18743@aol.com Subject: * Whats the BIG DEAL? Straight from the horse's mouth: http://www.mercuryrecords.com/mercury/artists/steve_poltz/ Clearly, Steve Poltz is not the type to shy away from a good challenge. Why else would the singer/songwriter, who has charmed audiences across the United States for more than a decade as a solo artist and as a member of the Rugburns, carry the torch for the old-fashioned love song on his solo debut, One Left Shoe? In an information-overloaded musical universe that's all irony and angst, Poltz still believes love makes the world go 'round. How uncool is that? Poltz's co-write with Jewel, "You Were Meant For Me," is one of the biggest singles in recent ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ history. In fact, by the end of 1997, it had been on Billboard's "Hot 100" chart for 59 weeks and counting, the longest any single has remained on the chart, ever. Poltz, who was voted 1997 San Diego Artist of the Year, is the one who got Jewel the gig at Innerchange Coffeehouse, where she would hone her chops and later get discovered and signed. What started as a friendship, soon developed into a great songwriting partnership that birthed many songs, two of which appear on Jewel's multiplatinum Pieces Of You, and several of which appear on One Left Shoe. (And, oh yes, that is Poltz playing "the guy" in the "You Were Meant For Me" video.) I think music should be about liking the music, and nothing more. sure, its easy to get drawn into musicians because of how they look, or the type of person they are. I admit, I admire Jewel a heck of a lot, she's a role model and a truly beautiful person, inside and out. But if she was ugly, and did horrible things, I'd still listen to her music, just because it was good Jewel doesnt care if you dont like how she looks...she only cares that you like the music, thats what she's doing this for. If you >don't like what she's doing, you're also under no obligation to buy her >CD's, or listen to her music. Live, and let live, my friend. Yes, that is a very good point, there's no sense in being angry at what you can't change... But I think what Sean is Angry about is that he thinks that Jewel wants to do more like the older stuff, hell quite some songs from Spirit are older stuff, but that the album is overproduced, and I think that is one of the problems too, I think that we (those who are missing something in Spirit) miss the small imperfections, the live singing, the spontaneous part. And again, I agree, it's not the obligation of Jewel/producer to make all her albums just like POY, and I don't see any use in getting angry over it, but I think Sean isn't all that angry about Jewel but about the production. >> Oh, and one other thing I noticed in listening to >> my old Jewelstock tapes. This horse has been ridden to death, beaten >after death, buried, exhumed, beaten AGAIN, buried again, exhumed again, >rendered for glue, beaten one more time for good measure, and then chopped >into little bits and used as shark bait. My only input on this is, again -- >she's under no obligation to do what you think is best for her, and you are >under no obligation to like her music, or buy her CD's. I don't give a >flying leap about makeup, honestly... if she wants to wear it, great... if >she doesn't want to wear it, great... if she wants to wear WAY TOO MUCH, >great. I may not like how she looks, but that has very little to do with >whether or not I like her music. Again -- live & let live. Very true, as I said in my last post, I don't like the 'painting like faces', but it's not our choice how she looks, but I don't think it's hers completely (i said entirely in my last post, my mistake), I think these kind of issues are handled a lot by management, and record companies ( who most of all want to produce an image rather than real quality music), and those are the sad things, as you said live & let live, please let Jewel do what she wants, and that goes for everyone on this planet, fans, non-fans, management, production, record companies and media. > I guess the bottom line is... if she makes you SO dyspeptic every time >you see her & hear her, change the station, or put something else in the CD >player... it's not worth your time and effort to get angry over it. Basicly, don't get angry over anything, for instance, if you let your TV fall on the ground, is getting angry over it going to help you? No, I don't think so, so why would you... And that goes for basicly anything, people, relations, material things and everything... The only thing you should become angry over is yourself, that way you can see what's annoying you in yourself, and try to adjust your viewpoint of the world, and notice that some of the things you do that annoy you can be annoying to other too, and try to compensate for that.
