Two posts in one night. I gots to get me a new hobby. :) Sean Hooks (sean35RL@aol.com) writes: > I don't listen to Jewel that much anymore. Not nearly as much as I > used to. But I was listening to her today and I think I know why I > don't listen to her as much anymore. Because it makes me angry. > [...] And I get angry because they are so damn good and now > everything she does is so mediocre. It's not bad. The setlist from the > first American show was far from bad, but it was equally far from > good, excellent, wonderful, amazing, and triumphant. Well, I have to *almost* agree with Sean on this point... When I first heard Jewel's music, I was absolutely astounded, because it was so different from most of the music I had heard before. Most of my friends were (and still are... :) very much rock & heavy metal oriented... then I was studying for a Biochem exam one night with MTV playing, and I heard "some chick" in her new video singing a song about saving my soul, or at least, asking about who was going to save it. And I really liked it... enough to go out and pick up the CD, which I nearly immediately fell in love with. Shortly after that, I found this list... and I ended up getting some live recordings, including the Jewelstock recordings, which I thought were even more amazing. Then, along came Spirit... which I bought, because I figured, "It's Jewel -- how can I go wrong?" And I was very underwhelmed by Spirit. It's not a BAD CD, don't get me wrong. But I had expected to love it just as much as Pieces of You & the live stuff I have, which I just didn't feel. A lot of the songs have grown on me, and I do *like* the CD... but I just didn't get the same feeling I had the first couple of times I listened to Pieces Of You -- when I heard POY, I couldn't help but think, "My god, this girl is going to be monstrously famous someday..." And, she's achieved that, although I suppose "monstrously" could be a debatable point. :) With Spirit, the voice is still there... the message is still there... the songs are still there... but it just didn't hit me the same way. Where I differ with Sean's position, though, is the "it gets me angry" part. I'm certainly not angry that it didn't live up to my expectations -- they're my expectations, Jewel is under no obligation to do what I expect her to... and my disappointment is more a function of my own expectations for Spirit, than any failure of Jewel's music. It's not bad music, it's just that *I* am not as into it as I was into POY. To be "angry" because of it, is, in my humble opinion, a complete load of b.s. Anger, at her, at her music, at anything to do with her music or her, really, is just a pointless waste of time. She's under no obligation to live up to my (or anyone's) expectations, so why should I expect her to? Of course, Jewel hasn't been in my "Top 10" list for quite some time now, anyway... she's very good, don't get me wrong... but there's others I like much, much better. In fact, Jewel was sort of my "gateway drug" to other similar artists, many of whose music I like much better at this point. But then, my listening tastes have always swung back and forth... 3 months ago, I was listening to Patty Griffin, Heather Nova, and Tori Amos pretty much continuously... the past couple weeks, I've been listening to stuff like Limp Bizkit, Rob Zombie, and Godsmack. (Sean, you may want to try listening to some of them, when Jewel's music makes you angry... it may help you work out some of those aggressions. :) And just this week, I bought a couple new CD's that are primarily Flamenco & Salsa music, which I've been extremely pleased with... for a while, that may be what I'm listening to primarily, too... who knows. Now, I'm not saying that any of those bands or singers are inherently "better" than Jewel's music... but they fit *****WHAT I WANTED TO HEAR***** much better at the time I was listening to them. In another week, or another day, or another hour, I'll get sick of hearing Limp Bizkit, and I won't listen to them for a couple months, probably. I guess what it comes down to Sean, is... if you're going to get SO upset over her music, and how she's somehow "failed" you, what's the point in listening? Put in something you *want* to hear. Throw in something new... throw in something old... just put something in that's not going to get you angry. Christ, throw in some Backstreet Boys, if that's what you want to hear, and it's not going to make you angry. Just put in something you LIKE, don't put in something that's going to make you piss and moan about how "the artist has failed me, and now I'm angry..." for the rest of the night. The point is, getting "angry" with an artist for not performing what you want is a pointless waste of time, because they're under no obligation to do what you want them to do, or what you think is "best" for them. If you don't like what she's doing, you're also under no obligation to buy her CD's, or listen to her music. Live, and let live, my friend. > Oh, and one other thing I noticed in listening to > my old Jewelstock tapes. Look at the J-cards of those tapes. Her > appearance is worlds away from what it is now. Mike Connell(this list's > manager) has always argued with me that Jewel is a twentysomething > female and she's gonna wear make-up and I should deal with it. Well, > I disagree. In her videos and TV appearances that she now does her face > is not even what we see. Her make-up is so thick it's like you're not even > looking at a person. One's physical presentation of themselves tells you a > lot about them in my opinion. Same old same old, eh? This horse has been ridden to death, beaten after death, buried, exhumed, beaten AGAIN, buried again, exhumed again, rendered for glue, beaten one more time for good measure, and then chopped into little bits and used as shark bait. My only input on this is, again -- she's under no obligation to do what you think is best for her, and you are under no obligation to like her music, or buy her CD's. I don't give a flying leap about makeup, honestly... if she wants to wear it, great... if she doesn't want to wear it, great... if she wants to wear WAY TOO MUCH, great. I may not like how she looks, but that has very little to do with whether or not I like her music. Again -- live & let live. I guess the bottom line is... if she makes you SO dyspeptic every time you see her & hear her, change the station, or put something else in the CD player... it's not worth your time and effort to get angry over it. Having been to many different concerts in the past few months, I can tell, the Jewel fans are mellow with their yells. But don't make the assumption that "everyone is screaming". I wasn't, and I love her more than most of the people around me made it apparent. I'm with you on the applause campaign though. Later in the show, Jewel turned to a girl in the front row and told her to sit down cuz the people behind her couldn't see and when they yelled, she said, "Oh hush, you didn't win that big of a battle." Then everyone else in the audience started to hollar and she YELLED shutup like 5 or 6 times and then did "Love Me, Leave Me Alone" and the audience was dead silent. It was fabulous. > > Date: Wed, 30 Jun 1999 03:05:06 EDT > > From: LuverMb20@aol.com > > Subject: * Kendell Payne & Jewel actions at the show > > > > Hello. They're > > playing her on my radio right now, its quite weird! > Well, more than just a blurb in Mademoiselle, I go to school with her fiancee's brother. She's 19 and she's from a little town in Southern California called Thousand Oaks (claim to fame: the fires in '93). She and someone else used to lead praise songs at her Christian Church til they "did it too well" and she was originally going to go all Christian. Then Capitol told her she wouldn't be successful there and to go Pop, so that's what she did. As previously mentioned, its name is "jordan's sister". She did a lunch time concert at my high school ( I just finished my junior year) which is in Thousand Oaks. Yes, she does sound a lot like Jewel, that went through the crowd multiple times and everyone came to me asking if I liked her since I liked Jewel so much. She's pretty talented. Some people didn't like her cuz they thought she was trying to be Jewel. She toured with Lilith last year. Her music is very musical, more than just a girl and her guitar. Some of it is Xian, which doesn't bother me. Buy her cd, you'll probably like it. Let me know what you think. Oh, she is also on the soundtrack to "Never Been Kissed". Glad to offer all that info. Sorry I don't know her phone number. Love, K8, the giggling angel. P.s. I think the camera thing is up to the venue. I was at Irvine Meadows the night after Bakersfield and they weren't allowed. They checked and everything and I was disappointed. I was a little disappointed with it. Jewel didn't introduce any songs, or give the stories behind them like she used to. It greatly reduced the intimacy of the concert. Not that a 10,000 seat amphitheatre can be too intimate, but she could do her part. I did like the rocking out she did at the end, though. The other thing I didn't like was the jumbotron on the stage. I would have prefered a widescreen tv rather than the boxy conventional one. Oh well. I was entertained, though. And than i ask you why ? The whole Spirit cd is an album that really is about optimism and about how we can be an effect on somebody lives. The band with Steve, Brady, Doug and Tony and Steve Georgie is of course very important at the concerts. It's not a Pieces of you concert tour anymore. Jewel has been going another direction with her music, and that's why she is only playing 6 songs accoustically or 7 at the current Spirit tour. It's just curious to find out when she is doing other songs accoustically at the venues in the states. I read your reviews that she sang Racecar driver. That seems very cool to me, as i haven't heard this song in Europe in may at her Spirit tour over here. Or the song Do you that she played for you.. I can imagine that the new song Do you want to play is to be liked by all of you. This songs is just great, the lyrics are good. You don't have to forget that when you go to a Jewelconcert, that you come for her voice and her songs. That all of you like, because we buy a lot of records of Jewel and her old songs are fantastic. But i can imagine that you can't maintain every song in your memory as you are doing so many other things in life. She is so multi-talented , that she focus on some things she like. And singing for us fans is just one of the more things that Jewel like. She acts, writes short stories and sometimes she makes drawings. So i can't really understand you judging so hard, i think touring is much more taking energy of you than you think. And i really do believe some structure is needed, to get a good show. I really enjoyed the bandplay and i think they are growing...example the new Jupiter version. Of course Jewel also sometimes reveals some new songs like Angel, I don't wanna be loved by anybody but you. Be proud that Jewel & Steve sometimes sing songs of the old days like I thought i saw you last night... I heard for example Old lover's house in europe in may at some of the many concerts i saw, and that was really exciting. I never saw them singing before may 99, so i was so happy when i finally saw them sing harmony. The song My body is changing is really one of my favourites now actually. Especially as they sing harmony. So don't judge too much, just try to enjoy yourself and have a great time .....that's what a fan is about. Enjoy Steve as opener, he plays some wonderful songs. .....request Little red corvette or the rappy Waterfalls....or Old Gym Guys....or Lockjaw....those songs he played at the european concert tour i went to , and they are my favorites.....and the chair song is excellent as well...or ten chances !!
