I got up to behind the EDAF people- Tony, Amy, and Dennis. They had some goofy hats and Dennis danced around. When the band set finished, Dennis and I wooped for an encore--you really got Jewel to do 4 encores at Jewelstock all by yourself?-- The show finished up and the EDAFers were going to go out and enjoy the night, I got to meet some HGH people and gave my oppinion of the screen and the images and stuff --I like it--, the EDAs where going to Denny's and I was driving home- it still took an hour folks and I did have to stop for gas. As Jamies words echo in my head"you'd better sing tommorrow Alex!" as I drive home, I was still in awe of Saturday's chain of events. Next day, I drive down-actually up-to Irvine about 1:00 and get to Sloppy Joe's for the EDA concert about 2:00. There was something very obvious missing...Jason, Lori and the other EDAs who I saw only 13 hours ago!?! I tried calling them but only got the answering machine. Joe-who I still don't know- played for his 1st time Sunday :D. Season, Jennifer McBride, Riziole,Jason Mraz, and myself played for the 2nd EDA concert. Things were more low-key and Jason and I got to jam on a couple songs that we like. Everybody loved it! :D Before Jason and I played together, Verling and friends show up. Ryan blew a tire and was about to blow another one, so he had to replace both. That REALLY sucked for you Ryan. :( I did play my set again, cause Jamie wasn't there to hear it the first time... :P Anyway, with Sloppy Joes stage being shut down and Irvine Spectrum security telling us we could sit on the ground outside Joes, we departed for the Jewel show. To make this as short as possible, Stevie!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU!! :D The show went on almost exactly as the night before --literally, Jewel was wearing the same thing and Steve gave beer to a 10 year old girl this time--She played POY and gave us the Federales/drug bust story. LoL!!! Some goon jumped on stage in "Angel Standing By" and quickly departed. Jewel got the best of Doug in the WWSYS jam --the night, before Doug got the best of Jewel :) The show finished as like it did the night before and the EDAs went to Denny's again(right Lori?) and I drove home knowing I had to go to work this morning(yeah I hear ya...waaa, waaa, waa :) Dennis "As long as there is money I can borrow, I'm gonna buy you a drink" Harris, Tony"Dennis, how many people do you own money to?", and Amy "I don't have any quotes for you"...it was great to meet you EDAF'ers. I hope that another one of these weekends happen again sometime soon. :D Alex the exhausted, slightly crispy, Gutiar playin Anger ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Jun 1999 02:03:49 EDT From: LuverMb20@aol.com Subject: * anyone tape Jewel at Irvine? Halo Angels, Well, tomorrow I leave for Vancouver and within 2 sleeps after that (assuming I get any sleep) I will be seeing Jewel and Steve in concert LIVE! I can not wait! I also can't wait to place faces to names of some of you other Angels and that is what this post is about. I have yet to hear from a few of you who will be attending the July 2nd concert at GM Place. Please email me as some plans have changed. I will be able to continue getting my email while in Vancouver so feel free to email me. It would also be helpful to have some of your phone numbers who live in the Vancouver area. So we can make plans as we go. With Thursday being Canada Day we have thought better of the idea of going to Playland as it will be crowded. Also we were thinking of meeting at GM Place around 4pm the day of the the concert and walk to a restaurant from there. Please contact me before Thursday if you are planning on meeting us anywhere. Thanks and see you soon! Smiles and Sunshiny days! If you go to cdnow.com, you can order it. If anyone already owns it, >can they tell me if its worth the money??? Thanks :~) > Hi! I just bought the Australasian special tour edition of Spirit, with the extra CD, and its pretty darn cool :) ! The CD rom features the 'Hands' and 'Down So Long' videos as well as an interview/ review from one of her Melbourne shows and a bio. The songs on it are a version of 'Deep Water,' with some of the original lyrics, recorded at Fox FM studios in Melbourne. It's really nice. The other is 'Foolish Games' recorded in Madrid. It's really good too, but she stuffs up the words. Or, maybe she just felt like swapping them around. Whatever the reason, at the first pre-chorus part where the words are, "Incase you failed to notice...etc" she instead goes straight to "Well, excuse me," and then proceeds to sing, "This is me, down on my knees. Somebody who gave a damn, somebody more like myself." Hmmm...? Anyway, its still good and you can really hear the emotion in her voice, you know, like she's having her heart ripped out and wants to do the same to whoever she's singing about, as with most live recordings/performances of the song. So, I hope that very long response helps anyone contemplating buying it. On a totally different matter, thought I'd mention that 'Down So Long' is now #25 on the Australian Top 40. Take Care, Jess P.S. Just thought I'd ask, because it's been bugging me - does Jewel have her ears pierced? I didn't think so, but I saw her perform 'Hands' on SNL the other day, finally - 'nice "very" short skirt' I might add - and it looked like she was wearing studs. Just a query. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Jun 1999 11:24:46 EDT From: Zaria2@aol.com Subject: * Down So Long Import Single for Sale Hey guys! I was at the CD store yesterday and I was looking for Jewel stuff as usual. Well I came across the DSL single from England. Other than DSL, it has I'm Sensitive and Fat Boy on it- both live. I know some of you are interested in these things so I pisked it up. If you want it, e-mail me and I'll let you know the price. As always, if you're interested in angelfood, let me know. - -Jen ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Jun 1999 14:58:10 EDT From: ABershaw@aol.com Subject: * MrBB-Various Stuff Hi all, Need to make this quick, but I wanted to thank all of you SoCal EDAs that attended the Saturday Gathering in OB. I hope you enjoyed listening to Nedra speak about HGH & that you'll hook up with the EDAFoundation on various projects. I enjoyed seeing you all, but wasn't very sociable because I had a fever & wasn't feeling well. (I'm still kinda sick out here...) Other than that, please check the website for some new things. Rusted Root are now our featured artists. As you know, they'll soon be joining the tour. I've also updated the calendar & added the missing Alabama date info for August 24th. Otherwise, EVERY US Tour date currently scheduled is now up. Many have asked about the the new "Jupiter" single & want to hear it. It was released to radio yesterday, so requesting it now should begin to yield results. And finally, lots of NEW Jewel Tour Merchandise is available at both the shows & the website store at www.jeweljk.com. I'll be home sweet home soon & will update you on other things then. Here is my official post on the festivities of the past weekend. I have slept many hours and I am now awake enough to write it. I won't get persnickety with details because you'd be reading this forever, but I will give you the highlights of each event. Friday: Jamie, Ryan, and I were nearly driven mad by the traffic on the way to San Diego. But, we beat the postal worker in his truck, so that's OK. We went to Java Joe's to see Gregory Page (Frank Lee Drennan opened for him). Awesome as always and Jamie got my CD signed for me. I feel so special. :-) Also met up with the infamous EDAF trio of Dennis, Tom, and Amy. I wasn't quite sure what the social norm was for greeting them, groveling or just the secret handshake. After the libations were poured for them, we were introduced to Pedro from HGH. What a beautiful soul he is. He's exactly the kind of guy you want on your team. We got back to our hotel late and slept in until the late hour of 8am. :-) Saturday: It took some shuffling around as well as cancelled shuttles and psycho taxi drivers, but we made it to the EDA concert at 11am, complete with a band (Sweet Duration & fan club). Turns out the chili cookoff is such a huge thing that they blocked off several city blocks for it. So we had to take a taxi there. Newbreak has great food (and their hot chocolate ain't bad either). After moving everything around, we got started with the EDAF and Nedra's talks at 12:30pm. They had really great ideas on how to get involved and talked about what their goals were at HGH and the EDAF. Excellent performances by all including: Jason Mraz (we're starting our very own fan club), Rizioule (the ever-mysterious ringmaster), Sweet Duration (still got that song "Fading" stuck in my head, which is a good thing), Jamie Mathews (We're so proud of her!), Alex Esther (shy today, but kicked booty on Sunday), Mike Carmona (with the sneaky cover of Unsung In Your Eyes), Season (who said "Can I play?" and we said "OK." Boy were we glad we did), Judge and Mike (Riz's friends from GA) and of course the incomparable Elizabeth Hummel. After the concert, I was forced to attempt roping our lovable plywood cow Woody. After a few tries, I managed to catch the fiesty beast by the horn thus earning my Woody button. :-) The Jewel concert! Only the 2nd time I've seen her in concert, but I loved it! The first time was the HGH concert in L.A. but there wasn't nearly as much pandemonium as at the SD concert. I don't remember the exact setlist, but she played quite a bit of album songs. For the purists, she also played at least four songs with just her and her geetar. I still love the lighting for Barcelona (they are dim until she sings "fly" in the line "Let me fly" and then they blaze up over her) and I love the new version of Jupiter. After Do You, she called us all up to the front. That was pretty cool, although I ended up behind people standing on chairs so I didn't get to see much. Oh, and yes Steve opened for her and I finally got to hear the Star Wars Song. He's so dreamy... :-) After the concert, we headed for Denny's (we had to find one that had enough room for all 20 of us) and then we said farewell to our EDAF/HGH friends. On the way to Jason's house (about an hour out of San Diego), Ryan's front tire blew out in the middle of nowhere. So Tony and I turned around and we called AAA. Then we poor saps waited for the tow truck and made it to Jason's house about 5am. (This will be instrumental in the following day's events) Sunday: We woke up and realized that we needed to have Ryan's car towed and both front tires changed (the other one was bald). So in doing all that, we made it to Sloppy Joe's just before 4pm. ("We're only going to be four hours late....") Just in time to hear a few songs from the incredible Jason Mraz and an awesome duet between Alex and Jason (which I'm told they had been doing earlier in the day also). We were shut down at 5:03pm (after all, the sound guy doesn't get overtime) so we sat outside and strummed geetars for about an hour until a security guard told us to go find a table to sit at. ("What are you doing? Having a powwow?") We sauntered off to the Jewel concert. I was hoping that she and Steve wouldn't play the same setlist as SD and they didn't. That was pretty cool. And as a matter of opinion, I think Jewel was better at Irvine than SD. She seemed more relaxed and better rested (even if she was wearing the same outfit). I always use Foolish Games as a reference -- at Irvine, she showed more feeling. And wow what a fabulous rendition of Grey Matter. (She played more non-album stuff during her solo performance) Again, we were invited up after Do You, but of course the security guards were being [insert profanity here], so they weren't letting people through even when Jewel insisted. So she told people to jump over the railings, etc. Not such a good idea, but I was eventually shoved closer to the stage. I had a pretty good view from my squished spot, although a couple of times I thought I would lose my hearing. Jewel may have been better at Irvine, but I don't think the sound system was. Oh well. It makes me glad to have gone to both concerts, even though I think some of my non-EDA friends are plotting to have me committed. Heck, I would be committed right now if they had seen the antics in the parking lot. ;-) But as my great grandmother used to say, "They're just staring because they've never seen so many good looking people in one place before." Another hello to everyone I got to meet face to face! Drop me a line sometime. You guys are all such sweethearts (even if some of you are legally insane) -- it was great to meet so many So Cal EDAs (get on our list!) as well as the long distance travellers. The morale of this story? Beware of Jason Vierling, who has a tendency to just attack anyone in an EDA shirt (he's one of Pavlov's lost experiments). And do NOT attempt to use the Force without proper Jedi training. *Hugs for everyone!* Lori email: larthur@fullerton.edu Hey, Carmona!
