Let me just say that Jewel is the most amazing performer in the world! Yesterday was by far the best day of my life. First I went to the Irvine gathering where I met so many great people and saw so many TRULY INCREDIBLE performers. I was the first one there. Then we went down to the amphitheater and tried to get in, but they wouldn't let us. But when the gates opened I was the first one in (actually I think I was tied with Stevie, but...). Then I bought a ton of Jewel merch and we proceeded to this little gate where we saw Jewel walk by twice!!! (even though she ignored our yells both times }:( . Then we saw Steve Poltz walk by and he signed my CD and tour book and we talked to him. He is so coooooool! And then Steve went on for the opening act and rocked the place. The Chair Song and Star Wars song definitely kicked butt but Waterfalls, where Steve RAPPED THE ENTIRE PART!!! blew everyone away. Then Jewel came on. I love it so much when she invokes her inner Janis. She wailed on so many of the songs. And WWSYS was so wonderful, even when she did the Kitty Wants Some Milk part. It seemed fitting. And towards the end, I knew she would invite everyone down, so I WAS IN THE PIT!!! I decided to stay on the first level in back, though because I am short and would get crushed like a little bug, but that put me right about eye level with Jewel (though a little bit farther away) and it was so amazing. I took 15 pictures. Hope they come out... But Jewel was SOOOO incredibly amazing and can work a crowd so well!!! Even people that didn't like Jewel said she was amazing. Next time she comes to town I definitely want to go to all of the shows in California. She kicked incredible, amazing amounts of ass. -Joe your one constant star angel P.S. wud up to all the Irvine Gathering EDAs!!! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Jun 1999 21:17:20 EDT From: JewelAng@aol.com Subject: * very cool I think you guys should all read this...the best part of the AOL online chat I think......It's thought provacing.........and yes I can not spell my way out of a paper bag.......hehe.........Later all..... Jewel, what inspired you to write "Hands"? I believe it takes a lot of courage to be in the world, to see the pain and poverty, but yet not to become disillusioned and instead focus yourself all the more on where change is possible. Which is something I think Dr. Martin Luther King did very well. And the more I travel around the world, the more I see young kids and young adults who at such tender ages have already lost their belief in their dream, that something better is possible, that it immobilizes an entire generation. And there is not a need for it. And I wanted to tell people that. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Jun 1999 20:53:11 EDT From: Mika911@aol.com Subject: * Jewelstock 96 Could someone tell me about Jewelstock 96? I'ma gonna review each of the days of this wonderful weekend. Friday-Due to all the traffic, we got to San Diego late, but it looks like everyone else was late, too. We headed out to Ocean Beach around 6 to meet Rizioule for dinner (this was me, Ryan, Lori, and Tony). We ate at this great little pizza place and ran into Jason and Sonja as well. So we ate, yum, yum...talked about the EDA concerts, and then left to go down the street to Java Joes to see Gregory Page. While there we ran into Alan and told him hello...then I got to meet Dennis, Tom and Amy (who are all just wonderful people). Tom and I decided we should call Andrea and get her butt over here, so we did, and she came, and life was well. =) So Frank Drennon opened for Greg and he has such a beautiful voice. Right now I'm very much regretting I didn't bring my tape recorder that night. =( Then Greg and the troubled sleepers came on, and they were spectacular, and everyone seemed to love them. Afterwards, I was designated to get everyone's CD's signed (Jason and Lori's), and after recognizing me as "the girl from New Orleans," Gregory went on to say "Your name is Jason?" about 3 times before he realized that I'm getting the CD signed for a friend. So he signed mine with his number saying "Let's hang out and talk about New Orleans some time." Freak. =) So at about 1:30 we left and went to the hotel. We fell asleep around 2. 8:00 the alarm goes off and noone moves for about 15 minutes...finally I jumped up and hit the first button I saw, then fell back down...It was snooze so ten minutes later, Ryan did the same. We finally all got up and ready. Then Lori and I drove over to Jennifer Mcbride's hotel to pick her and her friends up. We all then took cabs to Newbreak coffeehouse, where the first gathering was taking place. It turned out absolutely wonderful! Oddly enough, I wasn't in any way affected by sitting at the same table as Nedra...it was just like...oh, it's Jewel's mom...hmmm. But I was more interested in everyone talking on stage than her (except of course when she was onstage). Jason Mraz, is...wow...what can I say, amazing. Let's just say I taped him on 3 seperate occasions (San Diego, Jewel concert sidestage, and Irvine)...he just has this amazing voice, and he's really really nice, too...after I sang he came and congradulated me and stuff, and we talked for a while. Also Jennifer McBride....that girl has an amazing voice...sheesh...I think I know every word to her songs now. So yeah, that concert was wonderful. Then we went outside, and I failed miserably at roping Woody...but hey, I gotta cool button. Then we got lost on the way to the Jewel concert and would up missing half of Steve's set. =( Oh well, I figured I'd just catch it tomorrow. So I definitely can't remember the setlist for Steve's but I'll try Jewel's: Near You Always Deep Water What's Simple is True Hands Jupiter You Were Meant For Me (w/no pot story...it ws kindof refreshing.) I Thought I Saw You Last Night (w/Steve) Kiss the Flame Enter From the East Sometimes it Be That Way Morning Song Barcelona Life Uncommon Foolish Games (50 times better than HGH...the best I've heard yet) Down So Long Do You? Down Love Me Just Leave Me Alone Who Will Save Your Soul Absence of Fear Angel Standing By So the concert was spectacular, and especially so variously yelling things at Jewel and Steve with Andrea. =) Dammit, we didn't get to hear Lockjaw or Grey Matter!!! But it was still great. =) After the concert, my hat somehow wound up in Dennis Harris' pants. We then went to eat at Denny's...with 20 of us it was difficult to find one, but still and all...we got our Denny's fix. About 8 or 9 of us then went back to Jason and Sonja's to sleep. On the way there, we somehow managed to get out tire blown out, and had to call a tow truck...yet, I slept through the whole thing...they had to wake me up before the tow guy pulled the car up (yuck, more money we don't have). So we got to their house at around 4...and we all fell asleep between 5 and 6. The next morning, we all woke up after 11...with the intention (yeah right) of somehow making it to the EDA concert at 12...despite the hour drive, the flat tire we had to fix, the fact that Tony brought up mexican food, and the fact that we all looked like hell. So, needless to say, we showed up at the concert around 3:45...then at 5 they kicked us all out, so we sat outside in front playing guitar for a while. Carmona and I spent it basically teaching each other new Jewel songs. At around 6:30, we headed over the the Ampitheatre. I got Steve's on tape this tiem, but really don't remember the order of the setlist or anything, so I'll let someone else do that. But one thing's for sure, HEY ANDREA, HE PLAYED LOCKJAW!!!!!!! This may be a spark of interest for all you people who love to talk about this kinda stuff...Jewel wore the same thing she wore last night :::GASP!::: Oh well, she looked hot. Black leather tank top type thing and some leather re pants that I really want! Setlist for Irvine: Near You Always Deep Water What's Simple is True Hands Jupiter You Were Meant For Me (pot story this time) Morning Song Sometimes it Be That Way Pieces of You (hehe) Grey Matter *sorry Andra =(* Morning Song Barcelona Life Uncommon Foolish Games Down So Long Do You? Down Love Me Just Leave Me Alone Who Will Save Your Soul (Okay, it was really cool the first time. The second time it was still okay...by the third time I just can't wait for this song to be over, sheesh...) Absence of Fear Angel Standing By Then we all went our seperate ways. Overall it was just a wonderful weekend...aside from the 2 concerts that were pretty much identical (no complaints, cuz I would see them again tonight if I was offered). To everyone I've met this weekend, and to everyone who was there that I already know...think you for making a weekend (that I was thinking about bailing out on) so wonderful. =) And Dennis, I think you should buy me another hat. Love, Jamie *the everyotherday angel (before it came a mailing list =))* P.S. I love you, Cilla. =) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Jun 1999 15:59:21 -0700 From: "Arthur, Lori" Subject: * NJC: EDA Weekend in So Cal Hello everyone! This is not my official post about the whole weekend -- that one will be MUCH MUCH longer. But I did want to just say a quick hello to all those I met over the weekend and I wanted to thank all the people who came out to support our EDA concerts. They were both AWESOME -- we had great performers and terrific audience members. We had several people perform who had never performed in public before -- you guys were great!! And despite several setbacks that left many of us very late for the Sunday concert, I have heard many good things about those people I didn't get to hear and heard many good things while I was there. :-) A big hello to our long-distance travellers -- the plywood cow roping EDAF posse from the East Coast, the awesome Sweet Duration & fan club from San Jose, Jimmy who drove 9 hours to be in SD, the piano virtuoso Season also from San Jose, Rebecca the EDA from Michigan that everyone wants to know, Paul "Oh heck, I'll just go" Schreiber from San Francisco, Andrea (Ann-dree-ah or Ahn-dree-ah?) with the cool parents from Ohio, & everyone else that I forgot that I will try to remember in my next post. And another big hello to those who didn't have to drive all that far but came anyway as well as our new friends from Higher Ground! :-) I look forward to seeing you all again soon! I miss you already! *hugs* Lori *who has successfully roped Woody, the infamous plywood cow* email: larthur@fullerton.edu "A day without laughter is a day wasted." --Charlie Chaplin P.S. How many EDAs does it take to find a Denny's near the Coors Amphitheatre? What Otay Rd? They're ALL Otay Rd! Don't pull Jewel into the crowd! The EDAs are wonderful I love you all and miss you already (: Everyone made me feel sooo welcome and sooo sad to come back to OHIO BLAH.. I guess the fun started Friday nite when Jamie called me from Java Joes (its ALOT bigger then I imagined) and told me I should come :) G. Page was okay.. but then again I never did like him much. Saturday was a blast.. the EDA gathering was the kewlest.. (it was my first time going to an EDA gathering !! , and i've been on the list for how many years now?? hehe) Dennis talked about the EDAF for a lil while , and then Nedra got up and talked about HGH It was weird cause i was like 4 feet from nedra and was just like okay w/ it hehe.. Then the music started... everyone that played was great.. :) and everyone needs to buy Jennifer's CD.. she has an incredible voice :) (Jennifer email everyone on how they can get it ) Elizabeth Hummel was pretty good but she wouldn't play the song I wanted, cause Jamie's request was better ;) after that all the EDAs went out to rope Woody.. I wasn't very good, but Lori roped him up :) After that we all got in the 6 cars, stopped at Mcdonalds and drove around forever looking for the venue... there's way to many OTAY roads in San Diego ;) We got there a lil after Steve started :( but it was kewel... Jewel was the best I've ever seen her, she seemed genuinely happy to be there so that was nice...It was soo awesome seeing Jewel w/ EDAs cause im not the only insanely obsessed , crying, screaming, ready to pee her pants person there :) Jewel played everything from spirit cept Innocence maintained and fat boy... she also did YWMFW w/ steve and did a very cute rundown of the steve/jewel friendship before that , she also played WWSYS, LMJLMA ASB, Down, I Thought I saw you Last nite, Opened w/ NYA, and morning song (probably some others too) (i'll leave the setlist to someone else) Then we all headed to Dennys after 45mins of trying to decide. hehe the first one was full so we went to the another.. it took forever there and i think everyone was pretty tired.. before we left I got big hugs from everyone :) and got to watch Dennis put Jamies hat down his pants (ewwwwww) then sadly left MUCHO THANKS TO AMY, DENNIS, AND TOM for taking me to my condo.. (my dad didn't kill me :) :) :) ) Everyone was sooo incredible .. and i miss them all already.. it was horrible getting on plane the next day and leaving... Anyway thats a quick overview of the day bye all :) XOXO P.S. Hi to everyone I hung out w/ Sat.. YOU ALL ROCK !!!!! Jamie (a million and half huggs and thanks) Dennis (extremely kewl THANKS for the cow tail, and woody pin and everything) Tom ( very good at directions and hugs) Amy (Thanks for the ride home :) ) Ryan (he does weird things w/ his food don't watch him eat at 1 am) , Jimbo (we finally meet), Sonja (her hair rocks!) Jason (good job w/ the gathering :) ), Lori (very sweet girl ), Tony, Jennifer, (buy her CD) Paul, Jonathan, Mike, Alex, Karen, and everyone else i met but can't remember :) you all are incredible.. P.S.S. if anyone has pics and would make me copied I will send you money my pics didn't turn out :( :( :( :( thanks :) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Jun 1999 23:00:16 EDT From: DmBear978@aol.com Subject: * Ocean Beach, the S.D. (Part 2) Irvine concert is next Hi guys and gals, Due to my major sunburn from work today, my memory is kinda fried...so you EDAs that went to the EDA and/or Jewel PLEASE post about your experiences, I'd like to read 'em! :D Where was I....oh, yes...down at New Breaks. The EDA concert went on without a hitch and alot of people played -including Jamie and Season, the 1st timers who did an excellent job- we kept loosing our crowd, just cause a)there was a street fair and b)it kept going...and going... Then about 5:00 ish, Elizabeth Hummel showed up and did a set. Liz is a really cool EDA sympathizer! :) A couple songs I recognized were "the Macintosh song" and "Goodwill Store". She rights a bit like Poltz. 6:00 rolled around and everybody packed up. JIM!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for that ticket to the S.D. show. Email me Jim. :) After getting a ticket from Jim, I hauld my stuff back to my car in the boonies. For the next hour I went to Carls Jr, made a call to the folks and made my way down to the show. Last time I was at the Coors Forum, all the parking was on a dirt field and now its all on blacktop-very cool. WARNING-due to management and venue restrictions, no cameras or recording equipment were allowed into any venue across the U.S. unless specified at the venue--- I still snuck my camera into the place and got some shots at the show. I got into the vicinity of where my seat was and I found out quite quickly that a video camera occupied my space--hence "I don't have a seat guys!?!" A could security guards took me to the general admissions center. While on our way there, the guards said I knew a lot of people that went to the show-I past a couple EDAs on my way out-. I told her about the EDA mailing list and she nodded her head and said thats cool. I got a sort of new ticket that was a row back from my original seat. What I didn't realize is that the EDAF'ers were a couple rows infront of me-more on them later-. Steve did a set and somewhere in it, he gave a 14 year old girl a 12 pack of Lucky Loggers beer, renamed the Coors Forum to Lucky Logger Ampetheater and sang a little song in French. I got to hear and sing in "Star War's song" which is hilarious! :D If anybody's got a good quality recording of that song, please email me. Steve finished up and I went back out to a side stage where Jason Mraz was playing--later on I found that Cindy Lee Berryhill was playing on the second side stage--. 8:45 comes and its Jewels set. I know Alan was there, SO theres a good possiblilty that he's got the info on the set list. I love "Down", a more rocker version of "Love Me Just Leave Me Alone" and "WWSYS" reggae trade off between Jewel and Doug Pettibone(?) She also played a song that nobody recognized. It has a line in the chours like "Im drifting without an anchor" and the chord change sounds like (Stranger) Enter From The East-- I was really slow and sweet. She told us the story of when she met Steve at Java Joes. LoL!!! The show was over and Jewel came out to play/sing "Absence of Fear" and "Angel Standing By" It was the BEST show I've been to for a long time. I got to sort of meet Nedra, and I did get plenty of pictures from the EDA and Jewel concert. I've yet to get them developed. More to come....
