I don't remember this getting asked anytime recently here, so we might as well cover it publicly. :) The term "B side" comes from the days when singles were released as those 7" 45rpm vinyl records. There are 2 sides to a vinyl record, traditionally labelled "A" and "B." (you'd sometimes see "this side" and "that side" or "up" and "down," but you get the idea) Rather than waste half a record, if you can believe this, record companies actually thought to include another song besides the one they were selling! ;) This secondary single was referred to as the "B" side, since it was the song on the "B" side of the record. The part record companies got (generally pleasantly) surprised on was that sometimes the B side would get popular too. Now that the world has gone CD and other digital media, the term B side simply remains as a legacy, referring to the extra song(s) included on a released single. "Foolish Games" was included on the "You Were Meant For Me" single, so it is considered a B side. If I recall correctly, one side efffect of being a B side is that in order to be eligible for the charts, a B side must outsell the A side of which it was a part. (at least, at one time this was true, may not be now. and of course, would depend on which company was doing the charting and their rules) BTW, as long as I have the excuse to talk about A and B sides, I might as well point out that singles didn't always have a different song on the other side. These are referred to as "double A side" singles or something similar. :) Ray Wong PO BOX 6163 negativl at best.com, negativl at netcom.com Hayward, CA 94540-6163 Member #11537, Deborah Gibson International Fan Club Co-Founder and Charter Member, Sutton Foster International Fan Club ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Jun 1999 20:17:22 +0100 From: "Chris Groves" Subject: * Down So Long review in Flipside The following review of Down So Long is from the UK magazine Flipside (25th June 1999) - ----------------------------------------- Jewel Down So Long (East/West) Jewel has sold ten million albums for a reason. She writes songs that are solid and dependable growers with all the hallmarks America looks for when choosing its stars. A tender voice, poetic words, acoustic strummers, moderate rock guitars and a hint of desperate sincerity, all graced with country twangs. 'Down So Long' is all of the above but with an added twist: it's got a chorus that'll devour you whole with its haunting notes and Jewel's sumptuous, innocent vocals. It's just gorgeous. I was just saying to someone yesterday that there seems to be a mixture of Jewel fans on this list. Those who are obsessed with her to those who simply like her music, to those who find her to be an inspiration in their lives, and perhaps even those who are merely a fan because of what she looks like. All this had been tumbling around in my head for a few days and I was asking myself what kind of Jewel fan am I? Well, I have to say that I don't consider myself to obsessed with her. I'm not her biggest "fan" by any means. I don't know a lot of facts about her, I don't keep a scrapbook or anything on her. So I guess I would have to say I am much like you. If I ever met her of course I would probably blurt out "I'm a big fan"!! But it would be more accurate for me to say "your songs really touch my soul and have inspired me and helped me through times in my life. Thank you for being an open, honest and caring singer/writer...blah, blah." But you know what I mean. I like her music and the message of her music. The music and her voice are both beautiful. But I also like the message she sends out for others to follow their dreams, speak your mind and be yourself. So does that mean that I just like her music and her message? Or does it simply make me a Jewel fan? I think it means I'm a fan. And there are different kinds of us out here. In some manner we are a fan of Jewels. FAN is not a bad word. LOL! ;o) That's my story and I'm sticking to it. :) Shelia the blue angel who loves storms ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #333 ***************************
