Take her latest SNL appearance. Everyone was hyped to hear Jewel sing Hands live for the first time, and to hear what the new Spirit-versioned Down So Long would sound like. Even before it had been aired in my time zone, emails flooded my mailbox. I debated whether to read them and let them destroy the element of surprise, or just wait, form my own opinion, then read them. I choose to read them first. The common threads throughout those emails were related to a) what Jewel was wearing (and how whore-like she looked), and b) no guitar strapped to her back. I thought it brave of Jewel to wear that all-leather outfit, highlighted by that skirt! Some people freaked out about that, and reacted as if Jewel was going to dress like that from then on, 24/7. Now tell me you don't occasionally feel the urge to get glammed up, go casual, be a little raunchy, or even to wear nothing at all. Secondly, Jewel didn't have her guitar on her back at that appearance for ONE SONG! That's hardly a record, so I didn't know what people were complaining about. It didn't phase me in the least. Now on to last Thursday night. Once again, I was killing time online waiting for Letterman to start, and emails started coming in. One by one I read them. A couple were semi-positive, and one guy I think Scott, just flat out hated it. Let me say, Jewel must have been feeling raunchy that night, because she did look semi-whore like (it was so bad that my pervert brother took notice and was glued to the screen, when he usually claims Jewel's the ugliest thing to ever live). Might as well show off what you got. I still love Jewel as much as I did before. And seeing loyal fans like that one EDA turn their backs on Jewel, in some odd way, made me feel all the more of a Jewel fan. Scott (or whoever that was), my advice to you is to calm down. This whole fan-star relationship is an evolving process. We both are supposed to mature/change together, not turn your back on the other for the slightest thing you don't agree with. I am sure this one email's not going to stop many members on this list from over reacting after every television appearance, and it isn't intended too.
