Couldn't agree more. I'm not saying people aren't equally justified to prefer earlier material to later songs or vice versa, as is true with any artist. One thing I don't think she can possibly be accused of is being governed by her record company though. Didn't see the Letterman performance, so can't judge that, but at the London concert I felt that she was sincere and whole-hearted about her performance, in a way which no artist i've seen live before has ever appeared to be to me. If the new version of Jupiter is harder, like it or not, I don't believe for a moment it's because Jewel is selling out. > She has helped me so much in realising my own dreams. Subject: * thoughts on thoughts on thoughts on Thoughts It seems that older fans don't like the newer style of Jewel but the newer fans (or maybe younger fans) do like her new persona! Where have i seen that from, oh yeah the generation thing! Whatever your little beef be with Jewel, Jewel is here for the music and we need to respect that. Personally, i like to see her do any song cause they're all great songs. She looks good in just about anything she throws on. And whatever way she decides to mix up her music sounds very beautiful! When i read Sean's post, i respected what he had to say but his words seemed to come from a very angry source! I know where Sean is coming and it's fans like him that you'll see post because they have been behind Jewel for so many years and have given her so much support. Then they see these changes in Jewel style and music and it's like, "hey where's the Jewel i used to know?" Changes are inevitable and so personal freedom! Let's not bash Jewel's personal freedom! Second... Well, again, we are all discussing Jewel, what she does, whether or not she's changed... My opinion on this hasn't changed- and I won't mention it again because I value my life -but I have something to say. a person I appreciate told me this once, and I think we all need to hear this at times. Doubt. The most important thing you can do is doubt- everything you do and are told, don't ever take things as they are. Always question and try to find the answers you think are right. Even if we ARE jewel fans, we are allowed to doubt and disagree. it's a healthy, natural process. there is no need to make a big fuss out of it, certainly not mock anyone for his opinions. It's getting where everytime I read Jewel Digest, I get angry or frustrated. Please, if you don't like Jewel or anything about her performances.....just don't listen! Nobody is holding a gun to your heads and forcing you to watch her on tv or listen to her songs. This woman is the most beautiful, talented person I have seen in a very long time. So she changes words, plays around with the tempo of her songs...SHE'S AN ARTIST!!!! Remember? Who are we to take away her right to develop and refine her music? Let her grow..... My first post about an EDA event in a long, long time... :-) It was great seeing all the new faces. It was the best turnout of newbies in years, and I must say the new Jewel fans are much more attractive than they used to be! Tuesday night we were all seated in an empty VH-1 breakroom downstairs and did the question and answer practice thing. Afterwards, we trekked to the restaurant America where almost 20 of us hung for a while. Then Kelli gets an idea to do karaoke, so 12-14 of us eventually made it down to Pieces, which is a very small bar with a lot of guys with really nice hair (and VERY few women). Two of our three ladies left early (Leif and Amy), leaving ten EDA guys sitting there with Kelli. When Kelli wandered off, this group looked like a bunch of wallflowers sitting on the bench waiting to be asked to dance! LOL! Toooo funny. So, I suggested that four of us go up and sing "YMCA" full monty, then grab the $300 prize money and get out the door quick. I had absolutely NO takers! Damn, you guys need to loosen up and take some chances! ;-) I got to meet an Aussie EDA (Steve) who had just arrived in New York that afternoon. I let him know that his money was no good since he was a visitor to our country, and that as long as I could borrow money from the other EDAs, I'd keep his glass full! (If anyone has any idea who I owe how much money, let me know ;-) By the way, Steve's new name is "Taz" :-) And Eric's backup name is "No Mas Montas" and Chris is now "Yes Man Moynihan"... just thought I'd update everyone on that. Mr. Montas did such a great job herding everyone around Wednesday that I actually slept in and wandered down to the studio with Amy, Laura and Woody later in the day. Other than Amy eating a bug on the sidewalk (okay, it did do the Star Wars "death star kamikaze run" thing into her mouth) and Woody poking folks on the subway with his horns, things went pretty smooth. Before the show, they put us in a dark holding pen at VH-1, so Woody came outta the bag and some EDAs got up the courage to try to rope him. (Kristina and Fran, you both did very well.) Tom O'Brien (who had a chance to rope at the beach cleanup and passed on it) finally gave it a try, and couldn't miss. Another plywood cow roping addict! For those of you who didn't try roping Woody, don't be so shy next time and just do it! (Jewel does, but more on that later.) Anyway, the show was excellent. I sat in front of Mistuh Happy Poltz, who looked like the cat who swallowed the canary all night :-) The band members are great musicians, and I'm looking forward to catching them again down at the Texas and New Orleans shows next month. Jewel was sick with a cold, but playful and obviously in a good mood. LMJLMA rocked, and reminded me of the Paradise performance three years ago. Lots of banter, and an overall good feeling in the studio. It was as close to JewelStock as I've seen. This was much better than last November's MTV Jewel TV taping, and her comments about doing a rock-oriented release next were encouraging (even if she claimed to not remember how to perform Carnivore, which I still feel would have hit number one in the charts as far back as December 1996 if they hadn't canned it). If you think her crowds are big now, watch how far back your seats will be when THAT album is released! Of course, the following country album will fix that! (Thank god) Or maybe that jazz or blues album. Makes you smile just thinking about it, huh? So, the show was excellent. At the end, everyone whipped out their cds, anwa copies and such for her to sign, so I let Woody out of the bag and held him over the EDAs for Jewel to see. She was very surprised to see another plywood cow, said something like "you have one, too?!?" and signed Woody across the nose. Man, she is getting deadly with those autographs. Anyone who can nail a waving piece of plywood that well has had some practice signing stuff! Everyone was grinning from ear to ear, and we headed out to make plans to catch Steve and whoever else showed up at a bar afterwards. Unfortunately, I had to leave as my ride (Chris) absolutely could not hang out for another hour as civilization as we know it would end if he got on the road an hour later! So, we missed seeing Jewel, Steve and the others at the bar. If we had stayed, I'm quite certain that Woody would have been standing on a table being roped by folks, and Jewel would not have been able to resist the siren's call of the rope falling around the gentle curve of a plywood cow's horns... But that, my friends, will always be a COULDA-SHOULDA-WOULDA, won't it? ;-) The moral of this post? If you want to live a life uncommon, always chase the llama, never pass up a chance to rope a plywood cow, sing "YMCA" at a gay karaoke bar and stay one more hour with exceptional friends instead of rushing back to your "routine" life! I hope to see all you "ex-newbies" I met in New York again. I wish we had more time to hang out, but there's always Bearsville and Woodstock next month! I was so upset that I missed the show, but I'm reading all of these horrible things about it now so maybe it was good that I miss it ? But I don't think Jewel could ever be THAT bad, although I haven't seen it yet, but if you're all such big Jewel fans, don't let one performance make you go all the way from being one of her biggest fans to being one of her biggest bashers. I like Jewel for her music, poems, singing, and just her personality and I think it would take a lot for her to do to make me not be a fan anymore. Even if I don't like her music anymore, I still think she's a great person and only means well. If you didn't like this performance, then atleast give her a chance to try to do better, she is under a lot of pressure. Even if she goes down for awhile, still be there to support her because she will still be the same person that you have adored, even just seconds ago. Talent doesn't just dissapear. *Jade* ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #316 ***************************
