Hi to all EDA's who attended VH1 Storytellers: I just want to say that I truly had the best experience in my life. I am more than happy that I met you all on Tues. & Wed. Everyone was so easy-going and fun that it made it really easy to fit right in with the crowd! To Iris, Laura, Tom, Johnny & Sean: You guys are the BEST and I can't wait to see you all again!! Thanks for being a friend even though I was a bit hungover on Wednesday!!! After this experience I will DEFINITELY be seeing you all and meeting more of you at MANY future EDA gatherings!! I will post later more about the incredible show. We can all agree that nothing will ever compare to this again and how lucky we are to be a part of it. Luv to all, Kelli (an EDA that will forever keep her shoes!!!!) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Jun 1999 10:09:24 -0400 (EDT) From: rsm@cnnsimail.com Subject: * Controversial Opinions Sup' ??? Well I have only been on tha list for a short while and now just got the nerve to write sumthin' down...... I have a read a lotta different opinions for and agianst Jewel at the "Letterman Show". I'd say that it's really good that people are really open and not always completely satisfied with EVERYTHING that Jewel does. I may be no person to judge this whole ordeal because I have not seen the show....... but I'll be supportive to Jewel in saying that as a human, Jewel cannot always perform at a peak level consistantly. People always have a kick in the teeth after a really good run in life. For example...... Do students always perform well in every test or examination in their schooling career?? This has also been proven in sports.... Do soccer players perform at a peak every game? Beckham surely hasn't. For those that were dissapointed, has it ever crossed your minds that travelling and performing at multiple venues could be in fact tiring ? Please consider why these things occur. Well, don't close off your opinions as they should and always be heard as I of course may not be 100% correct. Well my conclusion is that like many others.... Jewel has her ups, and downs...... and unfortuantly to some, "Letterman" was a down. Well that's enough for that schnazzegen, I hope y'all bothered to get up to here......I best go and not bore anyone any further. I'll probably write a shorter msg next time ! Anyway, I'll see y'all later Ian B (RSM) (not bad for a 1st timer?) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Jun 1999 10:53:05 -0400 From: "Preety" Subject: * toronto show! Well, this was my first EDA gathering, first time I heard Jewel sing songs other than POY and Spirit, first time I saw her in concert. But WOW, being front row on VH1- you can't possibly ask for anything more!! Here is my story.... Me and fellow EDAs had such a blast before Wed. night arrived :))) But right now I'll just chat about the show. When Jewel first got on stage she totally freaked me out!! She says " Is there a Kelli in the audience?" Since thats my name I began shaking as I raised my hand!! I e-mailed Michelle at VH1 previously and told her it was my birthday and if Jewel could sing to me so I thought "Oh my God!!" when Jewel said that!! She was really referring to a crew member so about 3 people around me said to put my hand down cause it wasn't for me!! That was soooo classic ~ ha ha!! :) So then Jewel sang about 5 songs acoustic. Her voice was sooo amazing even though she had the sniffles. She told us a lot of stories and was really very personable. Then Jewel got off stage, walked RIGHT by me, and sat in a chair that was in the middle of everyone. She read one poem and then answered questions from the audience. When it was my turn it was definetly a moment I will never forget. She turned to face me (she was much less than arms length away) and I stood to ask my question. Before I spoke she looked down at my feet and said "Hey those are really cute shoes!" This Totally threw me off! I put my foot up on the ramp. I was wearing white platform sandals. Then I asked her if she has a special place that inspires her to write music and poetry. I can't believe how well I said it!!! I wasn't nearly as nervous as I thought I would be! So she looked right in my eyes for like 5-10 minutes as she answered my question--not breaking her focus on me once!! She said that she is only home 30 days out of the year so she just writes in her van or when someone is talking to her (pretty amazing huh). What else did she say?? Well, I was pretty starstruck so I'll have to wait till the show! I really think that my question will be on there ( I was wearing a red tank top and my hair was in a ponytail) . The band came on and rocked the night away with "Love me don't leave me alone" , a killer version of "Who will save your soul" and others. Afterwards she came over to sign autographs (I got one- YEAH). We weren't allowed to take pictures but while she was signing autographs I saw Lindsey flash her camera. So I RAN to get mine and got a great closeup profile of her!!!! I got a few more but mostly the back of her head. Actually I havent gotten my pictures back yet but this is what I remember and I am pretty sure they will turn out real nice!! About 5 of us snuck backstage and got to talk to Steve Poltz for like 10 minutes!! I told him it was my B-day and he shook my hand and said happy birthday!! Then my friend Tom took my camera so he could take a pic of me & Steve. When he flashed the camera, Steve was kissing me on the cheek!! I can't wait to see that pic!!! We all waited outside by the limo for Jewel but when she ran out, this nasty bodyguard stood RIGHT IN front of me :( . Oh well, I got my own pics!! So thats my story! I'm sure we are all still recovering from this!! Luv to all, Kelli *the city angel* ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Jun 1999 08:03:18 PDT From: Maffe Aap Subject: * My honest thoughts Hey all!! Just checking HardRockLive for the millionth time on tape... I have this question before one of her songs Jewel spoke of her car going to fast.. thinking maybe I'm thinking too fast, I should slow my life down, relax my soul and stuff like that she slowed down... hey, maybe I'm going too slow.... So, I decided to sell my car.. meaning what Jewel sold her soul.. Spirit: much smoother than POY in a commercial way.. I find Spirit a wonderful album, but it's much less challenging, much less daring than POY.. it's all very commercial to me... As for someone saying it's done by Atlantic to sell more records and get a wider audience... What the hell?? How big should the audience be?? How well did POY sell, man! (although, you may be right..) I do think Jewel is "refreshing" her music, people having seen 500 concerts and own 500 tapes, sure Jewel can't change every song every day to the liking of the mass... What Jewel has been doing lately, giving some songs a rocky-feel is very kewel, in my opinion.. Check out Pinkpop, which I missed *cuss* check out Spirit Bonus which is so brilliant Remarks that shock me: Jewel wears the same clothes all the time.. oh how sad... She's a beautiful woman, with a beautiful personality, with a beatiful voice/musical talent... If she's comfortable in wearing the clothes she is, that's for the best... that'll only enhance her generally performance... Seriously, imagine Jewel singing naked in front of an audience (from her point of view)... She wouldn't get a single note right, since she'd be uncomfortable... Spears versus Jewel.. Don't ever ever compare BS, the initials say it all to, Jewel again!.. I'm tryin' desperately not to slam BS.. believe me it's hard...Of course BS is a better live-singer than Jewel.. Jewel has done such great vocal performances on her songs, and then there's always BS who just sings songs, any person could sing, regular voice no troubles... Geez, it's so hard to sing (sarcastic).. But I've dissed enough to all your liking (I could go on for hours *evil grin*) Jewel attitude: *l* this is so normal, of course she has... Check out the Pinkpop interview where Jewel is forced to recite from her poetry and forced to yodel force = against her will.... She hesitated at first. Did some poetry, asked should I go on... Was clearly unhappy to yodel. It was never asked before, you know.. No wonder she gets ticked off.. It's because of the crappy journalists... I am one myself, I study Journalism, 1st year.. I couldn't believe how crappy that interview was. I wanna bet, that unless Jewel doesn't like me for whatever reason, I couldn't imagine.. (Well, at least I dare to day, she wouldn't dislike me) I could get a normal relaxed interview done with her. Ask her to recite a POY-poem.. while it is known that Jewel finds her qualities childish.. asking her yodel for the millionth time, come on... please Okay, I feel good now.. Released all my frustrations.. Thanks for reading! Maffeaap aka Jeroen Thijssen ps. One big f-word to the new possible law concerning music lyrics... (taken from www.billboard.com) House Bill Calls For Lyric Sheets In Stores Rep. Henry Hyde (R-Ill.), chair of the House Judiciary Committee, is proposing an amendment to a pending bill under which music retailers would be required to provide to customers lyrics of any CD or cassette sold in their stores. Under the same legislation, co-sponsored by Rep. Bill McCollum (R-Fla.), the sale of extremely explicit sexual or violent material would be made illegal within First Amendment constraints. "This legislation represents a new direction in our nation's fight against the culture of death that has desensitized a generation of American children to the horrors of violence," said Hyde on the House floor. Republican leaders have placed Hyde's amendment -- which is tacked onto a bill aimed at gun accessibility and youth violence -- on the fast-track to a House vote; it is likely to come up for debate as soon as next week. - -- Frank Saxe, Airplay Monitor SO this is the end for ICP, gangster rap and (Satanic) metal.. Could some one please fill > me in. The EDAF is a service organization founded by EDAs from the Jewel list who wanted to take an active role in promoting and affecting positive change in our communities. >From the EDAF Website: The EveryDay Angels Foundation (EDAF) supports and promotes grassroots community involvement in many areas. Inspired by the philosophy and sensibilities of singer/artist Jewel Kilcher, we understand that we are all in this together and are truly each other's "everyday angels," responsible to and for one another. We bring together partnering organizations and volunteers who are willing to lend a hand. To learn more about the Every Day Angels Foundation, or to find out how you can become involved, please check the website at: http://www.everydayangels.org/ The EDAF has participated in numerous food banks, beach cleanups, and activites to help people in our communities who are in need of assistance. Speaking personally, it really made me feel good to know that I could participate in activities that try to make a difference, whether it be distributing food for disaster relief, fighting hunger, cleaning up the environment, or just donating blood. The EDAF is just one of many organizations set up to help others, and I definitely encourage everyone to seriously think about becoming active in your communities and/or with local charities. You really can make a difference, if only for a little while. Albert Wang "Know who you are, where you are going, and what you want. You sound like Winnie-the-Pooh's Eyeore on valiums and bad booze! ;-) We just had one of the most classic "Jewel-like" performances I've seen since the summer of 1996, and you're throwing dirt on the poor girl's career! At the Storytellers taping, LMJLMA absolutely rocked, WWSYS took on new life and Jewel actually used the word "pee" several times in her concert banter! She also claimed not to know lyrics for at least a half dozen songs (THAT IS THE JEWEL WE KNOW AND LOVE ! ;-) and Tom O'Brien was even there to harrass her for it... classic. 75 EDAs (and one plywood cow) experienced something seldom seen since JewelStock and Hampton Beach -- Jewel opening up and enjoying herself while lots of EDAs got to meet each other face-to-face and make friends. I wouldn't be surprised if her Letterman show appearance was flat -- Jewel shines in person, connecting with her audience, not posturing for late night television audiences who are already half asleep (and probably wearing even less than she was!). Putting Jewel in these four minute spots on talk shows is the equivilant of sticking the Lakers' Shaquille O'Neal in a free throw shooting contest, then saying that he totally sucks at basketball when he misses them! Our girl had a cold and a fever (which she barely outlasted at the VH-1 taping), and well, hell, can you imagine how distracting it must be to have to look at David (Mr. Donkey) Letterman and try to sing with a straight face? ;-) Sean, I wish you had made it to the VH-1 taping and reported what you SAW and heard there, instead of predicting how soon the Jewel world will crumble because of what you suspect MIGHT be released... It's not that I don't agree with anything you say Sean, I just hate having folks "pee" on the parade before it even makes it down the first block! And where are the posts from the other 65 EDAs who were there? Last time I saw you guys you were grinning your asses off on the sidewalk in New York! :-) Dennis Harris, who will give a $25 bounty to anyone who can deliver Mr. Hooks to the Bearsville campout next month! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Jun 1999 22:42:40 +0800 From: endless@teammail.com Subject: * of lameness and letterman hi, this is my 1st post on this list. i just subscribed to it a few hours ago. btw, any other EDAs here in the philippines? maybe from abroad but are currently here in the philippines and can spare someone who hasn't seen jewel live an angelfood [i'll pay f r the tape], pls. contact me directly via my e-mail. about some of jewel's lyrics being lame. i do not think so. we've had basically the same discussion on the chris cornell bbs at imusic. [yes, i have a pretty odd mix in my taste in music]. chris' words would sound so boring being read by someone else, b t soon as chris sings them the "feeling" changes. same thing with jewel, she has this approach to her music that turns dull words into nourishment. let me go now to the "letterman" show. we do not get up to date shows down here. but we do get late telecasts, very late, like 4 or 5 days late. just want to know who are the guests that talked to david before jewel performed, so that i can call my frie d who has a vcr before she goes on. - - rvn ' close yer eyes, try to resist violence doesn't always come in da shape of a .... fist ' - --- andrew horwitz ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #315 ***************************
