I've updated the So Cal EDA website with all of the new information about our upcoming gatherings! June is going to be a busy month for us, as most of you have heard. You can find information about the upcoming trip to the Renaissance Faire as well as information about our EDA concert at Newbreak on the Beach (a brand new coffee house just down the street from Java Joe's and as close to the beach as humanly possible) on June 26th before the Jewel concert! We'll continue to keep you updated about what we're up to, but you can always check out our website's calendar to see what's coming up. http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Den/7151/calendar.html And hopefully we'll have a few pictures from our Beach BBQ soon -- yes, we did make it out there with a good turnout. However, we were all far too sunburned to post about it. We had lots of fun, despite the fact that we're all peeling like crazy now. We promise never to let the fact that we look like cooked lobsters prevent us from posting about our adventures again. :-) Hope to see you at the EDA concert! It's so sad for Jewel , i think personally that she has to do to many concerts in too less days. The tourschedule is really impressive, i know it because i travelled to a lot of concerts in Europe too! Can you imagine that when you are in Paris on wednesday for example the next day Jewel plays 700 km from Paris another concert ? She alwasy drive with a coach, and i don't think it's really comfortable. So i really feel sorry for her. Maybe soon she will recover well from her troubles with her throat. I was at the Munich show - I'll post an in-depth review later, suffice to say for now that seeing the Jewelster live for the first time was everything I hoped it would be - and was talking to Doug Pettibone after the show. So I casually asked him at what time they were going to Zurich that night, ans he answered - 'we're not, we're going home'. So I double-takes and says 'huh?' ( I can be very articulate on occasions), so he says that they are flying back to the States straight away that night and that all gigs were off for a week or so. So, he saw the look on my face, and asked had I tickets and I said 'front row', so he commisserates with me, and says that they'll be coming back in October. I also said that Jewel had left already at that stage to see a doctor. Jewel did apologise in advance for her sore throat, but she still have an awesome vocal performance IMHO. That's all for now - I'll post a review later, Ciao, Adrian The Irish EDA in exile ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 May 1999 13:10:39 MET-1 From: "CHRISTIAN LOBENSTEIN" Subject: * Munich concert Hi all! This is my last day on the list, so here is a review (actually more an opinion) on the Munich concert on Saturday. You already know about the concert itself, thanx to Michiel. So I will just give you my opinion. Some said, Jewel moves away from her old image. Answer: Not really. She still enjoys concerts and sings wonderful acoustic numbers... BUT! She added a new side to her repertoire (and all long time Jewel Fans know, that it is not really new). Jewel and the band really rock. And I mean ROCK! Forget the Stones or whoever, this Girl and her band beat them. The show is a great mix, she stuns the crowd with her acoustic songs and then starts to rock with them. All you americans who still wait for the concerts, if you are not sure, if you like the new CD, it's even better when performed on stage. So give it a try, you wont regret it. My parents surprised me with tickets for my best friend and I to go (kind of a congratulations for surviving my first year of college). I'm SOOO excited because not only is it my first time seeing Jewel in person, but it's also my first concert ever. (I seem to have this strange bad luck when it comes to making concert plans - something bad always happens) Well, anyway, let me know if I'll be seeing you there! Take care, Heather hmarie81@hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 May 1999 18:39:32 +0200 From: Harte Adrian Subject: * Jewel in Circus Krone Hi all, I'm back again with my humble ramblings on my first-ever Jewel show. It was easily the best concert I have ever been at, and I found it strangely emotional. First of all, I have to say Steve Poltz was excellent - talk about having an audience in the palm of your hand - he just wowed us. Highlight for me was his excellent silver lining, though Ten Chances is an inspired piece of song-writing. He didn't invite anyone onstage, but jumped off it down into the front row and serenaded a blonde girl in the front row, who also got a peck on the cheek and a CD - why doesn't Jewel incorporate that into her set? Jewel's entrance was pure theatre. The whole place went blank and she started singing Near You Always for a full minute acapella before she was bathed in green light. Then came Deep Water, What's Simple is True and Hands without pausing for breath. This is probably just stating the obvious but the live Hands on tour is really great, as she changes the notes slightly (I'm no muso so I'm shooting in the dark here) and drags out Yours and Hands -like My h-a-a-a-nds are small, I know, but they're not y-o-ur-r-s, they are my own. Way different that on record or even on TV shows I've seen, though she did sing it that way on BBC Radio 2 thingy. Then came You Were Meant For Me with Jewel and Steve in full-out flirt mode. Then she came right to the front of the stage - she was wearing a billowing black dress BTW that she seemed to be trying to escape from for most of the concert- and apologised in advance for our voice and sort throat, not that she needed to, as she sang wonderfully. JK also dealt with a few hecklers in an amazingly cute way, even managing to flick the finger at some guy and still look endearing. Poltzie then told everyone how Jewel had acted as a sort of tour guide for him in Munchen, telling him to go to Mariensplatz etc. They then did a magical version of I saw you last night, absolutely flawlessly until Steve messed up his line right at the end and they both collapsed into giggles, with Jewel giving Steve a playful kick on the butt by way of admonishment. Then came E from the E which is amazingly live. She was flicking through the POY CD booklet at this stage looking for the words to My 'Lil' Sister, and complaining that the writing was too small. Even from EE she explained that she wouldn't be able to remember the words, and one young lady helpfully started singing them and earned a round of applause. Anyhoo, she sang it word perfect and then sang MS. Morning Song was done unbelievably sexily, as she played to the crowd when she pouted and vampishly sang 'I'm gonna give you some more'. and LU before my personal highlight of the night as she came right to the front of the stage and sang a spine-tingling version of Foolish Games. This was the song that introduced me to JK, and it was incredible live. Things then got rockier with DSL- wow that band can play - and then everyone was invited up front, as JK unleashed a stomping version of Down followed by LMJLMA. She then engaged in some steamy hip-gyrating with her back to the and let down her hair in the intro to YWSYS- - which was done scat-style, segueing into the kitty wants some milk and the Jewel v Doug Pettibone session. That ended the show per se, but being the hardy soul that she is, JK came out for an encore - sore throat or no - and sang Angel Standing By - - 'a song I wrote 'cos I believe in Angels'. Though I was disappointed that there was no AOF or no chance to request Do You Want to Play, it would be caviling to find fault with the performance, which was all the more remarkable given the precarious state of the Jewelster's voice. I hung around for a while outside with a handful of others and then got chatting to Doug Pettibone, who broke the news that Jewel was going home and Zurich - and I surmise most of the rest of her other European dates - - was cancelled. Sorry, this is too long, but well, I just thought I'd like to share my first Jewel Live Experience with you. Roll on the end of July when I hop over the pond to see her on home turf. Thanks for you patience, Slán, Adrian The Irish EDA in exile. Two days ago I was at Jewel's concert in Munich and you know what? It was great. She apologized at the beginning for her bad voice because of the sore throat she suffered, but her voice was cristal clear like always. Steve was very cool too. His set was amazing and during Jewels set he seemed to have a lot of fun, like all other members of the band too. He jumped round the stage and also lied himself down on the stage twice. Here comes the setlist. I don't know the title of Steve's first song, but the other ones should be correct. Steve's set: 1. ??? (the word 'guiness' was in the lyrics, if it helps) 2. I love you 3. Circus song (he told the audience that he has always loved the circus and the song would fit perfect for today, because the venue where the concert took place was a circus) 4. Paint the town 5. Silver Lining 6. Great Mystery 7. Star Wars Song Jewel's set: 1. Near you always 2. Deep Water 3. What's Simple Is True 4. Hands solo 5. You were meant for me (with Steve) 6. I thought I Saw You Last Night (with Steve; they actually sang only the half song, because both Steve and Jewel forgot the lyrics of the last verse) 7. Enter From The East 8. Little Sister (Jewel had to use the inlay from the CD because she only remembered parts of the song) 9. Morning Song with band again 10. Life Uncommon 11. Foolish Games 12. Down So Long 13. Down 14. Love Me Just Leave Me Allone 15. Who Will Save Your Soul Encore Angel Standing By To put it in a nutshell: the concert was great. I hope Jewel will feel better soon. And I hope that she will perform concerts in Europe in the future again. However, just heard him play it for the first time tonight. He didn't mention that it was a request, but immediately after it finished he started talking about how you can request songs via email or the WWW, so I'm virtually sure that my request made the difference, along with anyone else who's tried emailing the station to request it. Also saw it on MTV again at lunch-time, so I'm very confident it's shaping up to be a UK hit, top 30 at the very least, which will make it her biggest yet. By the way, since they're playing it, I'd bet any other UK station in the capital radio group will as well if you ask them, so the moral is ... requests are worthwhile! The MrBBreply@aol.com account has been terminated & no more entries can be accepted. I took the time & effort to write back to all who didn't follow the instructions, but unfortunately, a few dozen entries were deleted that didn't resubmit their entry correctly. The only exception I made was for people who submitted more than 3 questions, in which case only the first 3 questions were submitted as per the instructions. Approximately 250 entries followed the instructions in time & all were added to the "potential" list. Almost half were from EDAs not even remotely near NYC & I question whether many really can even get there. Many seem to be in a dream sequence where this is an "all expense paid trip offer". It's not. That's why I specifically had everyone first answer the major question asking "Can you definitely be in NYC on June 9th?". Regardless of that, those people were still added to the list. I estimate approximately 150 of the entries are really capable of getting themselves to NYC, so that makes the odds about 50/50 for all other entries. Pretty good odds! :-) I'm not sure how VH1 will handle that "I want a guest" aspect. That's totally up to them. I tend to think no guests will be allowed which will accommodate more EDAs rather than less. VH1 staff will likely begin calling people tomorrow & they will personally inform the "75 EDA invitees" on procedure. Please understand that its out of my hands completely now & I will not be able to give anyone status reports. It's totally up to VH1 staff which 75 EDAs will be contacted and/or invited. That's the entire summary of this project as it now stands. I wish everyone who followed the instructions good luck & I look forward to meeting many new EDA faces there. I hope your weekend was much more relaxing than mine! ;-) MrBB ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #298 ***************************
