["Lisa Klecanda" Subject: * POY vs Spirit/naivety vs maturity/ etc I have yet to see a convincing argument showing that POY was in any way more "innocent" or "naive" than Sprit, but people keep stating it and restating it... I mean, of course it was LITERALLY more naive, since she was younger, and I suppose that the production values might have been considered commercially naive (but she said she never meant it to sell so well), but there is so much insight and intelligence on that record, and when you stack that up against "no longer lend your strength to that which you wish to be free from", well, my money rides with POY in terms of sagacity. I mean, while I do appreciate that often the least heeded and most important lessons are simple and obvious, and I don't NEED a song to be sad in order to like it... I'dlike to point out that any four year old kid could tell you that if you're banging your head against a wall and your head hurts - STOP. I don't see why these songs are being heralded as so wise and worldly. I mean, in the time before Spirit and including but not limited to POY, Jewel wrote all kinds of amazing lyrical portraits of people... their neuroses, their lives... brilliant and insightful extrapolations of humanity that could only have been fueled by a superlative understanding of people and life. How could these new, vague, bland, uninspiring tracks come near to that? I'm not saying that it's necessarily naive or foolish to say that "we're all okay", but if you're telling me that it shows more understanding of the world and people in it than a family portrait like Boy Needs A Bike, then... well, I'll disagree - vehemently. ^_^ Please, someone justify this claim that Spirit is better informed than POY! And I'll try to leave my artistic contempt for Patrick Leonard's work out of it, since we're talking lyrics here. ^_^ And finally, knee-jerk reactions to a few things from the last digest... > i think this response angered me more then any other. is jewel a puppet, > who has no say in how her songs will sound on her own album? the producer > may have a lot of impact on a record, but if an artist puts her foot down, > especially on something like this, she has the final say. maybe patrick > leonard managed to convince jewel that this way is better, maybe it was > the other way around, but spirit could not have sounded like this without > jewel feeling that this is what it should sound like. It would appear that Jewel is in a pretty sweet position in terms of creative control, but don't assume for a moment that that's the life of your average major label artist - who gets final say is determined in your contract, and each contract is more or less unique. Loads of artist have no control over what they do. I'll bet that the Smashing Pumpkins' label wasn't too pleased when they let slip on Muchmusic that the whole "goth" thing wasn't their idea and they were getting pretty sick of it... I'm (peripherally) in this industry, man, and I can tell you that Jewel has a NICE position, probably due to the fact that she had a strong following before she got signed (like Marylin Manson or Aphex Twin - - why change it if it's working?), but not a terribly common one. And then she goes and commercializes her OWN sound... argh! > i don't think anyone will argue that jewel's lyrics on spirit are > briliant. I'll argue against that. The more I listen to the newer songs, the less worthwhile they seem to be. Some of the Fritz-Creek-era songs are great (ugly production, but great songs), but the newest stuff has awful lyrics... in my lofty opinion. ^_^ > the question is more about the music that goes with them. and > even then, i think there's agreement that it is beautiful, wonderful > music... I went to the Paris show and I must say that it was the best Jewel show I saw(it was only the third one after Indy and detroit in 96). She was unbelievable and the show was great. I was surprise by the number of people there as Jewel really do not get much airtime on the french radios, but it was full around 5000 fans I think. She played for over 2 hours and had two encore, she took a few request and I was so happy because she sang my favorite song, Emily (she said it was the first time in three years she sing it), it sounded great even if she forgot some of the words. THe version of the live uncommon and WWSYS were totally breathtaking with WWSYS lasting over 10 minutes and finishing with Jewel and her guitarist doing a duet. She was in a great mood and talk to the public a lot as she told us the drug bust story, I had to translate it for the people seating next to me as they did not speak english, but it was great anyway. Steve was really good as always, and did a fun version of Waterfall and the Star War song, he also made a few allusion to the French victory in the World Cup and people loved it. He gave a few fans seating up front some of the wine he had with him on stage. Anyway, It was the best concert i ever been to and Jewel should really start to pick up some fans in France after a performance like the one in Paris. On a more personal note, I'm sorry I could not meet the French EDA but mu train was really late and I barely made it on time for the concert. Also; if someone has a recording of the concert, PLEASE e mail me as I would trade or buy it from you. Thanks and sorry for taking so long.
