Well, April 3rd is long gone and I was wondering if anyone knew what was going on with the site. Does anyone here maintain it or if not, have they ever seen it up? Just wondering here, please post back! I think we should all have parties today! I turned 22 on Saturday, and I think it's amazing how much she's accomplished in so short a time. I guess she's an inspiration to us all. But you guys knew that already! She's a wonderful role model to have, and I must say I'm proud to be an EDA. Are there any T-Shirts still available?! Brendan "sensitive and I'd like to stsy that way." - Jewel PS: Welcome Bernardo! And I'm going to call some local radio stations to request Jewel songs. Hope y'all have a nice day! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 May 1999 16:13:30 EDT From: EDAFinfo@aol.com Subject: * ACTS OF EVERYDAY KINDNESS Scrapbook Project EXTENDED! This year's list "project" for Jewel's birthday has been very successful so far, with over a hundred EDAs expressing an interest in participation, and many submissions already received! The original deadline for completing and submitting these acts WAS today, but we are extending that deadline to June 12th to give more EDAs a chance to participate! Jewel will now receive the scrapbook in July. Those of you who have already submitted your acts of kindness will be contacted individually later this week. We'd like to point out that many EDAs are donating blood as one of their acts, and encourage anyone on the list who has donated blood recently (or is considering donation) to please contact us. Our best previous blood drive on the list was 28 EDAs, and we'd like to eclipse that total with this project! To explain the entire "Acts of Everyday Kindness" project, below are the (revised) guidelines and submission deadlines! *** ACTS OF EVERYDAY KINDNESS PROJECT GUIDELINES (MAY 23rd REVISION) *** You've expressed an interest in participating in the Acts of Everyday Kindness Project, aka, the "Scrapbook Project". Here's the basic gameplan for it! :-) >WHAT IS THE PROJECT ABOUT? The Acts of Everyday Kindness Scrapbook Project is intended to creatively document kind and generous acts committed by EDAs from the month of April to June 12th. The book will be given to Jewel as a birthday present, fulfilling her wish that her fans do positive things for their communities and each other. The scrapbook will also be digitally reproduced and made available online for others to see and be inspired by. Coordinating this project is The EveryDay Angels Foundation (EDAF), a non-profit volunteer organization formed in 1997 by Jewel list members. >WHAT KIND OR GENEROUS ACTS CAN I DO FOR THE BOOK? The possibilities are endless. Everywhere you look you can find people who need help, animals in trouble, gardens that need care, littered sidewalks that need cleaning. The acts can be as simple or complex as you want them to be. Does your community recycle? If not, maybe you could organize something and get your neighbors, friends or school system to participate! You could donate clothing, old computers, just about anything to thrift stores such as the Salvation Army and Goodwill or to women's shelters, hospitals and schools. You can join a literacy program to teach children or adults to read, or teach a skill you have to someone else. Be creative! Think about the things that are important to you, and make them happen. If you have an idea but need help developing it, drop us a line (EDAFinfo@aol.com). The EDAF has sponsored events with non-profit partners in the past, and encourages EDAs to consider the following ideas: *** Help the Hungry in Your Community: Foodbanks collect food from individuals, supermarkets, and food companies to distribute to the hungry. Donations are appreciated, and volunteers are always needed to sort the food into categories and check for freshness. To find a Foodbank in your area, see the Second Harvest website locator at http://www.secondharvest.org/websecha/f_getouc.htm Once you find out who takes donations, you could collect canned and dry goods throughout your neighborhood, or see if your school would consider running a food drive. Volunteering an afternoon with the foodbank is really a lot of fun, especially if you do it with friends! ***Beach Cleanups: As warmer weather approaches, environmental groups sponsor beach and shoreline cleanups worldwide. Cleanups are important not only to preserve the beauty of shorelines, but also to collect data used to study our waters. The EDAF participates in beach cleanups throughout the year, and will join in many worldwide cleanup days. See the Center for Marine Conservation website volunteer page http://www.coastalcleanup.org/3_pt/3_ptintro.html for a list of ways you can help this cause. *** Blood Donation: Hospitals are always in need of blood, and most communities routinely hold blood drives. However, you must be at least 17 to donate, and there are some physical restrictions. Red Cross provides half the United States' blood supply and likely has a donor program in your area! For more information, see the Red Cross website at http://www.redcross.org/where/where.html or call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE. (The Jewel list has run two successful blood drives in the past.) If you need assistance in finding something to do, please drop Amy an email at w1ggy2@aol.com and she'll try to help you through the process! >NOW THAT I'VE DONE MY GOOD DEED, HOW CAN I GET IT INTO THE SCRAPBOOK? There are several ways to be included. You can: 1) Email us (EDAFinfo@aol.com) a paragraph or two about what you did, how it made you feel, and the results it yielded. These will be compiled and added to the book. 2) Make your own page for the scrapbook. Let us know if you want to do so and we'll mail you a piece of heavyweight 8-1/2 x 11 pre-punched scrapbook paper. You can write on it, draw on it and glue pictures on it. (Just follow the directions we include with the paper so it will fit into the book properly.) Please email us (EDAFinfo@aol.com) no later than Friday, May 28th if you want to do your own page! 3) If you aren't able to volunteer an act of kindness by June 12th, we suggest that you write a short "commitment statement" promising that you will perform "X" hours of a specific community service over the next six months. Email us (EDAFinfo@aol.com) your commitment statement and we'll include it in the book. (But be prepared to fulfill your commitment, and don't be surprised if the EDAF calls you on it! :-) >AND FINALLY, SOME PROJECT DO'S AND DON'TS: Please DON'T: ..."gush" about Jewel, offer prolonged birthday greetings, or submit lengthy letters about how Jewel has affected your life. While it's good to MENTION how she may have inspired you to start volunteering, remember that the focus of this book is on HELPING OTHERS, not getting Jewel's attention. (Besides, you'll already have it, and we're sure she'll appreciate your sincere stories and actions more than compliments!) Please DO: 1) ...as many acts of kindness as possible! 2) ...tell us about how the act(s) made you feel! 3) ...get your submissions emailed or postal mailed no later than Saturday, June 12th. 4) ...enjoy doing your acts of kindness! Thank you to all who are participating in this very special and important project. I think we'll all learn a lot, get a lot of satisfaction, and create a beautiful book at the same time. Looking forward to hearing all the wonderful stories, Amy, Dennis and Tom for The EveryDay Angels Foundation ********************************************************* The EveryDay Angels Foundation is a non-profit public benefit corporation whose mission is to promote grassroots volunteerism and community involvement. Well, of course, HAPPY BIRTHDAY JEWEL! Still assuming she won't see this, I know I've become a better person in part to her being an inspiration.
