(EDA gathering related) I like that Erin brought up the very important point of being safe at the many upcoming gatherings this summer, and I hope you all took the basic message to heart. So far, we've had very little problem during the many gatherings we've held and/or organized over the past couple years, but with soooo many people now on the list, the chances for a problem increase. While a couple of the suggestions made are very, very good - especially letting a friend and/or family member know where you'll be and how to reach you, there are a couple that may not be quite as realistic - at least for gatherings, such us some we've held - that are held at people's homes, etc... If you plan to follow the suggestion of bringing a friend, please be sure that it will not cause a problem for the person organizing the gathering - and be sure that the friend you bring will be respectful of other people at the gathering - we've never had a problem with the couple of people that brought a friend, but you never know. As far as talking to all the attendees personally, that may not be too realistic, as people tend not to want to just give out addresses and/or phone numbers to people they've never met - face it, that could be just as unsafe as attending a gathering full of strangers. I personally have talked to many people planning to attend a gathering on the phone previously, and have no problem with that, but would never give out other EDA phone numbers and such without their permission - and yes, if you plan to attend the Great EDAdventure or the upcoming Bearsville gathering, I would be willing to talk to you and answer any questions you might have - I've even been known to talk to a couple parents before they would allow their daughter's to attend (funny it's always the girls ;-) There is one suggestion that I'd like to add to Erin's list - especially if you're traveling alone. Be sure you have change for pay phones in case you get lost or something - or at least a usable calling card, and if possible, bring a cell phone!! When I send directions to attendees, I always (now :-) include our phone number in case anyone gets lost or anything and needs to contact us (I may even put our 800 number this time) Well, that's all I can think of for now :-) Thanks for your post Erin!!! At a recent concert, her fingernails were too long to play the guitar, so she asked the audience, who consisted of Sean Penn and Billy Baldwin, if anyone had any nail clippers. Luckily, someone did and after chopping her nails, she started the show. Cute!" Was anyone at that concert? If so, can you elaborate?
