But this is my first post on this list since I moved from Alaska(Where I spent literally all of my life) to Florida. I miss my home very much and hope to go back there some day but for now I am chasing the impossible dream to live my life in joy living my dreams. I was wondering what the closest venue to Florida Jewel will be playing at is. If someone could let me know I would appreciate it. If you are a Floridian EDA send an email my way...and we can chat jewel or maybe plan a small gathering... Jewel and band played a rocking version of Down so long and she really vocally changed it here and there, but i really liked it. Okay so here's the "interview": Paul de Leeuw: "Thank you, Jewel and band. Hello, hi, how are you?" Jewel: "Good to see you." P: "Yes, the first you were here, you were alone." J: "Uh, I was alone, yeah." P: "Where do you meet the band?" J: "I picked 'em up on the street." P: "Really? Are they cheap?" J: "Yeah, They're very cheap." P: "And the drumstel was with him, too (points to drummer)?" J: "You just feed them, and uhm, that's it." P: "Ooohh... You were raised in Alaska?" J: "Yeah." P: "So, you're an Eskimo?" J: "Yeah... do I look Eskimo?" P: "No" J: "Well..." P: "You look a little bit like an igloo. Do you sing in igloos or something?" J: "Uhmmm, no." P: "No?? Where do you sing then?" J: "Just around." P: "Just around? At what age?" J: "I started very young, about six." P: "You were pushed by your father and your mother?" J: "Terribly!" P: "Yes????" J: "Abusively!" P: "Hehheh, but you were raised by your father?" J: "Both my parents till I was eight..." P: "But then they divorced?" J: "And we started touring bars." P: "And so they separated igloos?" J: "Yeah, different igloos from then on... Does that make you happy?!" P: "Yeah, that makes me very happy." J: "Ah, good. Yeah, I lived in an igloo." P: "Oh, thank you, and then you lived with your father, but now your mother is your best friend, managers and sings with you. How come?" J: "Uhhh..." (cut short) P: "Why weren't you raised by your mother?" J: "It was just the divorce, you know..." P: "You choose??" J: "Money, things like that.. No, I didn't choose.... You wanna get into this?" P: "No, allright.." Jewel says something which I didn't hear.. I think something about this being boring for a live show blablabla.. They both laugh and after that it goes on. P: "I heard a rumor..." J: "You're blushing!" P: "Yes, because you're a woman!" Audience goes wild! J: "Why were you grabbing yourself earlier??" P: "There? (points to his nipples) J: "Yeah." P: "Did you see that???" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 May 1999 19:36:50 +0100 From: "Chris Groves" Subject: * Jewel in Heat! Before you boys get too excited, Heat is a weekly entertainment magazine that is available in the UK. Jewel gets a couple of mentions, firstly Down So Long is listed at number 9 on the Most Played Pre-Releases, Airplay chart with 211 plays and secondly there is the following review of A Night Without Armor. - ---------------------------------------- All songwriters are, in one sense, poets but few choose to take up that mantle and actually publish their words. Alaskan singer-songwriter Jewel believes that "not all poetry lends itself to music - some thoughts need to be sung only against the silence." So a bit of hush please for A Night Without Armor, the collected verse of a reflective and extremely verbose young woman. Taken from the journal Jewel has kept since childhood, these poems are most interesting for their insight into the quirks of her impoverished rural upbringing: "August spent/ filling empty milk cartons/canning and preserving the syrups, jams and jellies/that would sustain us/through another pale December" (Home). Her more abstract musings are less effective as the language isn't vivid enough to convey or inspire any real emotion, but hidden among these mainly self-indulgant outpourings is the odd thought- provoking observation: "Can you imagine/how silent/a plane crash would be/if you were deaf?/ How unbearably loud a rape?" (Shush). SARAH COHEN - ---------------------------- Chris. I should be used to it now, but I have so much trouble believing that Jewel could possibly have written that... I mean, there's NOTHING THERE! I've been listening to His Pleasure Is My Pain, Hotel Angel, Memoirs Of A Housewife.,, those songs are so intelligent, so insightful, so original, so unique.... what the hell is that above? How long could it possibly have taken her to write that? I guess Jewel's voice is now her primary instrument... but I liked it better when voice came second, and her BRAIN was her main axe. Look at that junk. Even Beth Gibbons couldn't move me with those lyrics. I hate being so negative all the time, but what the hell is she doing? It's true, I'm too sensitive to this sort of thing, but all the animals say Jewel needs to get back to how she was. I'm not against change, so don't defend change to me. I love change. I hate... I just love > the lyrics- the aggression and the power are great buts it's also really > smart. I listen to new rap,too- I like Method man;Eminem's Funny Hmm, I wonder if she means the original, or the 1991 "Bring Tha Noize" when they reperformed it with Anthrax... I mean, it really makes a big difference - the original is much less like normal music, since Terminator X was an industrial noise maniac, and the remake was basically metal rap (doggone Korn and their ilk, I say). I wonder just how familiar she really is with Eminem's work... come to think of it, Em could have cowritten Daddy She's A Goddess... ^_^ Hm, if Em and Meth are the mainstream hip hop she's into, there really might be some hope if someone would introduce her to some more intelligent, esoteric hip hop artists, like Aceyalone or Company Flow or Deep Puddle Dynamics... I mean, if she said she liked Puffy or Will Smith, that would be disappointing, but she said Meth & Em... and while they're by no means the best hip hop out there, they're pretty near the best in the mainstream... errr just musing to myself. I want to give Jewel a mixtape. > > ok that's the end of that > i would love to see Jewel do some kinda of duet with maybe the stones or hey > maybe even method man > what do you guys think ??? Jewel and Meth would not mesh well unless she made it clear before hand that she's not neccessarily (sp?) sweet... if they hooked up to do another weak-ass mainstream relationship rap, I'd hit the roof... but if they could come up with a more interesting/original topic, or just be themselves, it might be dope. But... I don't know, I wouldn't pick Meth as my first choice dream Jewel duet. ^_^ I'm waiting for the Marylin Manson duet... ^_^ .end.transmission. | Jesse Dangerously | .10.04.good.buddy. | without justice | ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 May 1999 15:48:06 -0500 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." Subject: * !!! Houston EDA gathering update #1 !!! - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ These updates will appear at most once a week until the week before the show, on July 10. Some EDA's are also planning to go to the Dallas show which is the day before, and the New Orleans show, which is the day after. These updates will only refer to the Houston show though...as far as whose going, the plans for earlier in the day, after the show, etc. As of right now, there aren't any definite plans, however some things have been tossed around, and we are speculating they will occur...once we figure out a time, place, etc. Plans call for an all-day gathering...before the show, and after. Once a placed is established, we plan to have a BBQ/picnic/plywood roping contest/beer guzzling contest (j/k)/whatever else you can think of that's FUN! Some EDA's will be arriving Friday night very late, coming back from the Dallas show. So no time or place has been established yet as for when this gathering will "start", and where it will be. More than likely, something a little more "planned" will take place just before the show...something like a dinner maybe, at one of the restaurants close to the venue. A good time would be 5:00pm-6:00pm. To give everyone plenty of time to eat, and still make it to the show on time to see Steve take the stage at approx. 8:00pm. I'm predicting he'll play about 45 minutes, then there will be a 15 minute break for stage preparation for Jewel, then I think Jewel will play at least 1 1/2 hours...which I think is really cool since the longest I've ever seen her perform before was 1 hour. So it most likely won't be over till at least 10:30, maybe even closer to 11:00pm. After that some of us may get together and go to a club, or just hang out somewhere. But others maybe not be able to, and yet others may want to get an early start on their road trip to New Orleans the following day. So all this is still really up in there air. But we'll think of something soon enough. Right now we're looking at about 15-20 EDA's...unless more get tickets soon. Almost all of the covered reserved seating is sold out...BUT there are still some seats left...good ones! I said ALMOST sold out. And there are plenty of very good non-covered reserved seating still available. So there's plenty of time to get tickets still, and to get rather good seats. No need to be thinking about bringing a blanket for the lawn yet. Tickets are only $36.00, that includes all the taxes too, which to me is cheap based on the prices of other recent shows. Lawn seats are even less of course, if you prefer that. So that's about it for now...here's a list of all the people that have told me, or have told someone else that they're planning on coming to the show in Houston...if you have any questions, e-mail me or Luna Taylor...see her addy below. One of us should be able to give you somewhat of an answer...at least to the best of our knowledge at this time. The show is still almost 2 months away, once it's closer, within a week or two, I'm sure we'll have more plans ironed out as far as the where's, when's, etc. Till then, unless something changes, I'll just be resubmiting this letter to the list once a week, along with the most up-to-date list of EDA's going. If anyone sees any incorrect or missing info in the list, let me know so I can get it corrected.
