Someone wrote this to me... I thought I would reply to it on the UK list and the EDAs, to stick up for Jewel and to show EDAs some of the twisted views the British have of Jewel's music! >I disagree with everything you said. Boyzone are one of the best bands >around at this time....Jewel and Eternal's music all sound the same,,,i get >so bored listening to them,,,all there songs are alike with no real meaning. Jewel has written over 200 songs. Sure, the 5 singles that you may have heard, and maybe some album tracks sound similar, but until you've heard a couple of tapes of Jewel live then you don't know the meaning of diversity - she can go from her rocked-out versions of her singles and some album tracks, to country, opera singing, and even yodeling! On one of her soundtrack songs, she even raps =)... And if you think that Jewel's music has no meaning, you obviously either don't know any lyrics of any Jewel songs, or you don't have a proper grasp of English, because Jewel's music is very meaningful - it has changed people's lives (including mine I think). Just buy Jewel's album and listen to "Fat Boy" if you want to hear a song with real meaning. I don't understand how anyone could think that a group like Boyzone can have songs with more meaning than someone like Jewel - Boyzone's songs are all cover versions for christ's sake! EDAs - ya think I got my point across eh? Hehe... The answer is basically yes. The story (AFAIK) is that Jewel met Steve while she was waitressing and he was performing at a coffeehouse in San Diego. She told Steve that she, too, played music and asked him for advice. Jewel and Steve went on to write songs together, travel, date, tour (she initially opened for the Rugburns, 'cause they were more well-known than she was). there's more to the story, but you'd have to ask someone with a better answer. :-) Paul shad 96c / 3A CS / mac activist / eda / fumbler fan of / jewel / sophie b. / sarah slean / steve poltz / emm gryner / / x-files / buffy / dawson's creek / habs / bills / 49ers / t h i n k d i f f e r e n t. it's nothing that i understand, but when in your arms / you have complete power over me / - -- Jewel Kilcher, "Near You Always" ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 May 1999 16:50:19 -0400 From: Mike Connell Subject: Jewel list management: a change in list email delivery Hi folks :-) This is, in my opinion, a long time coming. An asterisk is one of these babies ----> * So, from this point on all email that comes from the Jewel mailing list will have a subject like: Subject: *Why doesn't Jewel ever tour in Greenland? or Subject: *NJC: Anyone seen my purple socks? or whatever :-) I have discussed this with more than a few list members, including some of those who have requested such a change. I agree 100% with Tom! Jewel is very diverse, and people don't realize that her singles are also determined a lot by the radio and the record company. What they think people will like and listen too and will sell well! The whole radio procedure is screwy if you ask me! Songs are played to much and for to long. They need more variety of the artists. Why else do we wonder what she is implying in her songs, or who we think she's talking about in that one lyric? Most of the time we have no idea! Talk about diverse, we've already heard how many versions of "Down So Long"? I just think that if she recorded different versions of her songs to put on the radio, like DSL with electric guitar, it would of done better-even though I love the radio version just the same! Oh my gosh if they released a live album of recent shows it would blow Spirit out of the water, I'm sure! (no offense Jewel)! And she would have to put "Do you Want to Play" on it ! And I doubt people could complain, because Jewel is best live and we all know that! She's completely free on stage! It's almost unfair that the public doesn't get to see all of what we see! Yet they write some of the dumbest reviews! Their lose huh? And what about if Jewel and Steve did more songs together! They play Shawn Mullins on the radio here like crazy, and in a Celebrity Death Match, Steve would whale on Shawn Mullins! Does anyone know why they don't play Steve on the Radio? They used to play "Dicks Automotive-Rugburns", on one of the Rock stations! Oh well, the publics lose yet again! ~Bflykisses~ "If I could tell the world just one thing it would be that Jewel kicks ass!" ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 May 1999 20:38:21 EDT From: Cikor12@aol.com Subject: * need gorge tix hey, Is anyone is willing to sell 2 or more Gorge, WA tickets to Jewel for face or reasonable value? I saw Jewel live for the first time last week and she was unbelievable. I have been a huge fan for a long time and have always respected her and her music. After seeing her live I respect her more as a musician. On stage she came across as a very real person, she was funny, she was sexy but still had an innocent shyness about her. Most of her songs sound better live. Many people have mixed feelings about Spirit compared to PoY, after seeing her live I hear Spirit in a new way and can see the direction Jewel wants to take her music. I often thought the song ‘Absence of Fear’ never fitted on Spirit and was not what I would call a ‘Jewel’ song, now I see how the song is ‘Jewel’ and it was one of the best songs of the night. My favourite song she performed was ‘Deep Water’, I always liked that song and she set it on fire when she sang it live. I have my own Jewel club called Deep Water and would like to invite all the EDA to join. You can read my thoughts about the concert and see some Jewel photos at the club too. http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/deepwater Scott The Wet Angel ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 May 1999 16:12:31 -0700 From: Diana Ruiz Subject: * Re: Every Other Day Angels (EODAs) >"The Every Other Day Radio Angels '98 Tape". Ok, first I'd like to say that Jewel was NOT rude, she was just standing up for herself, and I totally think she did the right thing!! The only person that was rude there was the interviewer (Charlee) {that's how he spells his name} I mean, "over night sensation"...come on, we all know that's not true!! And that prolly pissed her off too!! I didn't realize why Jewel had said this until I listed to the interview numerous times. And that's what I came up with! Plus...They still haven't gave up talking about her! They even made a commercial about it which really pisses me off! I mean, it was 6 months ago get over it!!! I recorded some of that rude stuff so if anybody wants to hear it, let me know and I'll make that into a wav like I did the other thing! Ok, that's all from me, no ones prolly reading this anyway.
