I've also heard versions where she says "French Fries" (for all of you smart alecs out there, YES, I KNOW WHAT FRENCH FRIES ARE!!) and something like "modiglianni". Maybe she's just mumbling, cause she couldn't remember that it was "French Fries". I can make up cool words like that too... like "frinky poodicle". Doesn't that sound intellectual? I totally agree with sean and the others who don't like the basically generic setlist. With over 200 songs or whatever she should come up with a half new set every night, its not like she has a big laser or light show or costume changes that need to be coordinated (thank god). The best live acts today are the spontaneous ones- pearl jam, dave matthews, tori, phish, widespread panic. They will decide in mid set what to play, take requests from the crowd, and throw in great crazy covers. Yeah Jewel still does this a little bit but not like in her wonderful earlier days. Yeah I know I'm one of those old grouches that doesn't like the "new" Jewel and need to accept change , blah blah blah, whatever. No, because I believe she put more passion into her older shows and songs than she does now. Obviously she doesn't have the time to devote herself to writing as much as she used to, but the generic videos, setlists, and over done "rockin" band versions of the songs just don't cut it for me. Maybe Its a very visually-oriented song, so saying Modigliani makes perfect sense. Amedeo Modigliani, a Jewish-Italian painter, who moved to Paris around 1906. He was influenced by a lot of the Post-Impressionists, Gaugin, Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, and Paul Cezanne. At lot of his portraiture is reminiscent of a cross between Gaugin and Cezanne. (Lyrics in here!) Date: Mon, 10 May 1999 15:22:04 +0100 Sender: owner-jewel@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi Guys, I'll post Steve Poltz's set list later (I also have a recording of that, BTW) but firstly, here's what Jewel played last night, including my guessed lyrics to the two new songs she played - one acoustic, one with the band.... she played in total for just under two hours, and Steve played a 45 minute opening set, including Ten Chances, Silver Lining and the Star Wars song. Yes, I recorded it, and will be trading for it, although only within the UK at first - I have very little money at the moment and people will have to pay return postage along with sending tapes. For Jewel & Steve, you'll have to send a 120 minute tape, and a 90 minute tape - that's the ideal configuration for me - it just works that way. I've got the entire set applause through applause! :) The set was very good, and indeed interesting as Jewel seems to be taking the Tori Amos road of adding little improvised bits to songs, which is always a good move (IMHO!) - all with the band unless noted. Names in "inverted commas" are simply me making up names for the new songs. I hope that it's like finding a new star.... ;) Near You Always (solo) Deep Water What's Simple Is True Hands Jupiter ("What is this? A press convention? You guys have more cameras than I've ever seen...") You Were Meant For Me (She messed up the lyrics and cringed!) Kiss The Flame (solo) Innocence Maintained (solo) "Weeping Tree" (solo) Enter From The East (solo) Morning Song (solo) Barcelona Life Uncommon (lots of audience participation here!) Foolish Games (keyboards and Jewel only) Down So Long (again, plenty of audience participation!) "Do You Want To Play" Down Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone Who Will Save Your Soul (with the 'cat' bit) Absence Of Fear (w/Keyboard only ) Angel Standing By (solo) - ----- - -- Now the lyrics... "I wrote this last night. I don't quite have it done yet but...." Weeping Tree - Jewel Kilcher - all paragraphs/stanzas/verses are arbitrary. Don't cry pretty girl Do as you're told to. Don't <> memories just because it hurts you. There's a stranger's sillhouette Had it's way with you, because it wanted to. Don't worry - ain't damaged yet. Don't let it haunt you. Just stand out in the rain. Until you're made whole again. The under the moon. Weeping tree. Under the weeping tree. Underneath the starry sky. You're just a stranger. Tut tut, shh.... Ain't it embarassing? To be yesterday's lover? To stand out in the rain. Until you're made whole again. You'll see... Under the weeping tree. Under the weeping tree. - -- New song - with band - . "I'm gonna play a new song for you, if you guys don't mind. I wrote this a while ago but haven't played it out yet. Here we go..." It's a rocking number and *very* good indeed. The lyrics don't give you a good idea of what it's like. It's hard to make out what she's saying properly. This is the best I can do. Nothing can do this song justice, honestly, other than hearing it. "Do You Want To Play?" - Jewel Kilcher Met her on a Friday Afternoon In a disco glow light neon. Chiffon . She never looked back. She always look[ed/s] good dressed in blank. She says "oh oh oh oh owohowoh" Do you want to play? The counter beneath the discount store Pictures of <(R)Andy Newman> scattered all across the floor. Subject: ***Houston area EDA gathering!!!*** As most of you know by now, Jewel will be in concert at the Woodlands Pavillion just north of Houston on July 10, 1999 @ 8:00pm. The last time she came there was for the Lilith Fair in 1997. We got a small group together and had a mini EDA gathering, I think about 15 EDA's were present. This time around, another gathering is being organized. Nothing very formal, just a little get together of some of the local EDA's who can make it to the show. I believe the gates will open about 7:00pm, maybe a little sooner, so a good time to meet would be at about 7:30pm. A good place is by the statue (figure/sculpture), on the right side of the pavillion. There are two main entrances looking at it from behind the big hill, I'm referring to the right entrance here. So far I've had 6 EDA's tell me they're going, and a couple others who might if they can get tickets. As of this morning, I know there are still some good seats available. As in, the covered reserved section...about half way up, which isn't that far really. So if you want to go, I'd get tickets as soon as possible before they start getting into the uncovered reserved area's....in the event of rain. Then of course there's always the hill, but who wants to sit way up there? Ticket prices are $31.50 for reserved (covered and non-convered), and $24.00 for the lawn, plus all the service charges and taxes. For anyone whose never been to this venue, this is a good place to see Jewel perform. It's not as big as some other outdoor pavillion's, and the acoustic's are fairly good. As opposed to some indoor venue's where you have echo's, etc. If anyone needs help with locating ticket's, directions, a seating chart, etc. go to the ticketmaster web page...all that info is on there. WWW.TICKETMASTER.COM I'll have a full car, but some other's may not, so if you need a ride, it wouldn't hurt to e-mail someone you know is going that's somewhat close to your area. I'll include a list of the names and e-mail addresses I have so far of the EDA's I know are going. Granted this is only 3 days after they've been on sale, so this list will grow alot I'm sure in the weeks to come, being that we still have 2 months before the show. I think we could easily have 20+ EDA's for this. So if anyone has any questions, just write me back and I'll try to help answer them. Here's the list I have so far: - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ---------------- Derrick Karacostas dkaracos@utmb.edu Hitchcock, TX Sean Charlston playaboy1@juno.com LaMarque, TX Nicole (no lastname) Qteblond16@aol.com Texas City, TX Amber Reed Amber@pernet.net Bridge City, TX (Beaumont/Port Arthur) Mandy Reed Mandy@pernet.net Bridge City, TX Kim (no lastname) Kkosatka@aol.com Spring, TX Lesley (no lastname) DkookyBaka@aol.com Corpus Christi, TX Maybe's... Anyone interested in attending, let me know so I can add you to the list. Once the date gets closer, we can all start to organize things a little better, and think of other things to do after the show, etc. Thanks, Derrick ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #256 ***************************
