London & Cambridge ... WARNING: LONG STORY ... Date: Sat, 8 May 1999 18:57:29 +0200 Sender: owner-jewel@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hey EDAs, It's only one day after I came back from the UK where I saw two really fantastic Jewel concerts ... It were the first two times I saw it and I'm very glad I have a ticket for Pinkpop so I can see her again .. hehehe It all started last Tuesday ... I awoke at 6.30am ...I caught the train at 8am and arrived at Schiphol airport (Amsterdam) by 10.30am ... I'd go to see Jewel with two fellow Dutch Jewelfans (Lotti & Michiel) ... Michiel was in Ireland already, so I had to travel with Lotti (which was no problem at all :-))) At 1.15pm we left from Schiphol airport (after "some" taxfree shopping) and we arrived in London only 50 minutes later ... Lotti & I met Michiel who was waiting for us at Heathrow aiprort ... Our UK Jewel adventure could FINALLY begin :-))) After dropping our bagage in the Georgian House hotel, we took the underground to Oxford Street ... Visited some shops there and bought some things (huh, Lotti ...:-)) Ofcourse we have been looking for some Jewelstuff, but couldn't find any interesting things ... There were some promo posters for Spirit in the underground and in the HMV and Virgin stores, but that's all ... 'Cause the day was really tiring (walking walking and walking ...), we went back to Wednesday we were eating breakfast at 8.30am ... (be careful of the milk, Michiel!!) After finishing that, we taak the underground to Oxford Street again ... We finally found some nice Jewel stuff at the Hollywood Super Store ... (That's near the Centre Point Tower and the Tottenham Court Road Tube Station.) If you have the chance, you have to visit it ... We found some VERY nice large pictures of Jewel .... (real photos :-)) I bought five of them ... One with Jewel holding her poetry book in a book store, another with Jewel and her guitar in a street, one black/white with Jewel and her guitar (from Interview magazine 1997) and some concerts pictures .... They were not that expensive ... (only 2.99 pounds for the colour pics ...) We haver been walking for some hour through the city of London when we finally found the sleevecard single of You Were Meant For Me ... (HMV) ... They also have the import single of DSL ... As you already know the DSL single will be released in the UK on May 24th. At about 3.30pm we arrived at the Royal Albert Hall ... Maybe we had a chance to catch a glimpse of Jewel and/or the band ... We have been waiting for one or two hours ... There was a car for Jewel and the band .... I talked to the driver of that car but he didn't want to tell me much about it all ... So he couldn't tell us whether Jewel was already inside the building or not ...:-(( While waiting at the Hall, we met some other EDAs ... One of them was Francois Cartegnie ... Sorry, I can't remember the names of all other EDAs, but there not that many EDAs there ... A woman told us that Jewel was at her hotel doing some interviews ... She even named the name of the hotel (Master hotel) ... So we walked to that hotel, but we couldn't find it :-((( After all we walked back the the Royal Albert Hall where we FINALLY met the band .... Jewel was already inside (we heard her doing the soundcheck which was very cool!!) ... We have been talking to Steve Poltz which was soooooo cool!! He asked how we are and where we came from ... he was a bit surprised when we said we were from Holland ... :-) He signed all Steve cds including some nice horns on his head on the cover :-)))) That took about 15 minutes or so ... That was the first time we saw them :-)))))) Ater that we have been waiting for Jewel to come out after the soundcheck ... Finally she came out (5.15pm or so, can't exactly remember it) .. I had to take away my camera (didn't like that, but okay) ... She looked pretty tired and didn't have much time ... She was wearing some nice sunglasses .... Fortunately she had time to sign some cds .... I got my FIRST signature (on the Australasian Spirit) ... yehoo ... hehehe ... It was soooooo fantastic for us to see her in "real life" for the first time! Jewel and the band (excluding Steve) left by car .... After that (I guess it was 5.30/45pm or so) we heard Steve doing his soundcheck ... That sounded very nice .... People for the Royal Albert Hall asked us if we were interested to have a dinner in the restaurant ... We entered the building and ate a pasta in the restaurant ... After the dinner I bought the tour book and some other things (tour t-shirt, five nice cards and the Jewel journal) .... Unfortunately it was not cheap, but it was worth buying it :-)))) At 6.45pm we could enter the venue .... Michiel and I had (with many thanx to Chris Groves) front row tickets ... We were exactly in the middle of the front row, so I guess it were the best tickets of the whole Hall ... hehehehe :-))) We were about 2 meters from the stage sop we could almost touch Jewel or Steve .... :-))) Steve's stage was already prepared: a barbie doll, a bottle of wine and a glass ... That was very cool .... We met some other UK Jewelfans in the second row which was very nice (ofcourse) ... At about 7.45pm Steve introduced himself ... Very nice ... hehehe His performance very very good!! He did songs like the Chair song (you can imagine what about it was .. hehe), Ten Chances and the Starwars song. I know that these are not all songs he did, but I can't remember the other songs ... sorry ... His set was a good warm-up for Jewel's performance ... hehe ... Oh, and he kept saying that his cd was for sale (10 pounds) in the Hall .... hehehe ... I'm sure many cds were sold that night ... Then there was a 15-minutes break ... The stage was being prepared for Jewel ... It was much bigger than Steve's ... But Steve was alone (except for two songs) and Jewel plays with the whole five-men band ... :-)) Jewel entered the stage at 9pm ... She looked soooooo nice ... Nice green pants and a black top in which not much was hidden ... (guys know what I mean, I guess ... hehehe; sorry, just wanted to say that) First song was Near You Always ... The venue was completely dark ... Only Jewel singing, which was realy fantastic!! It was no problem making any pictures, so many people took that chance ... hehehe ... The first three songs were acoustic: Near You Always, Deep Water and What's Simple Is True ... those were really nice and I thought the crowd (it had to be 5,000 people!) were very enthusiastic ... After that she did Hands and a fantastic version of Jupiter. Before she played You Were Meant For Me, she told the (already known) drugbust story from Mexico ... Steve was laughing at some times, which was very cool ... She sung YWMFM together with Steve ... Enter From The East (which she did after YWMFM) was very cute .... hehe ... Just like Morning ... Sometimes It Be That Way was not that rocking like she did on earlier concerts ... Very quiet version, but it was beautiful ... When she wanted to start singing Grey Matter by saying "I hate you", everybody started laughing ... Immediately she started Cold Song to finish Grey Matter after Cold Song ... I think she lost her concentration when everybody started laughing ... But it was a cool moment ... Barcelona and Life Uncommon were sooooo nice!! Very beautiful light effects! Foolish Games was very quiet, but fine ....:-)) And then the ROCKING part of the performance started .... First Down So Long ....I could hardly belive how beautfiul that was!! After DSL she asked the crowd to come very close to the stage, so everybody stood up and walked/ran to the stage ... She did Down (VERY rocking!) and Love Me Just Leave Me Alone ... Then the longest song of the night begun: Who Will Save Your Soul ... Probably it took 15 or 20 minutes ... I can't remember, but it was SOOOOOOO COOL!!!! Everybody was clapping .... She did a part of the song with guitarist Doug Pettibone ... that was really fantastic!! She had to laugh at one monent ... hehehe ... She also played a opera song which I never heard before ... Absence of Fear which she played after the opera song, was very cute ... Everybody was still close to the stage ... The final song was Chime Bells, indeed the yodeling .... it's always very nice when she "sings" (actually it's yodeling ...) that song ... I think that you can imagine that I was REALLY satisfied with such a beautiful concert .... According to the concert reviews in The Guardian and The Times, the critics also thought is was a really fantastic gig!!! People who didn't hear much music from Jewel before were probably surprised that someone has such a beautiful voice ... I think that Jewel realized that the Royal Albert Hall had to be the break-through performance for the UK ... I think that it's succeed ... hehehehe ... After the concert everybody went to the exits very soon ... All fans were waiting for Jewel (and the band) coming out ... But that took a really LOOOOOOONG time .... We (Lotti, Michiel, Francois and I) started walking to the hotel the woman told us earlier that day ... We thought that it'd have no sense waiting that long ... But we couldn't find that so-called Master hotel at all :-((( We asked several people but nobody knew it ... I think the woman probably lied :-(( So we walked back to the Royal Albert Hall (that was about one hour and a half after the concert) ... It was still very busy ... everybody was still waiting .... The car diver I spoke earlier that day to, told me that they were having a party inside the hall .... Because we already had a signature from Jewel and it was really late (we had to take the underground), we decided to leave the Royal Albert Hall ... We still had one concert left (Cambridge on Thursday) so we still had a chance to meet Jewel again .... At 1am it was completely quiet in the hotel ... hehehe ... We had to leave the hotel pretty early ... (by 10 am), but we were still tired ... We had to travel to Cambridge that morning ... With Chris (who also went to Cambridge) we had arranged that we would meet each other at 12.15pm at King's Cross station ... So we did ... the trip to Cambridge was pretty nice .... In Holland most trains are too late, but this train was already on the station and arrived in Cambridge at the time stated ... We took a taxi to the hotel Chris arranged in Cambridge ... It looked not that bad ... One twice and one triple room for the four of us ... We left our bagage there and immediately walked to the venue in which Jewel would play that night ... It was about 3.30pm when we arrived there ... There was only one fan already waiting for Jewel .... her name was Veronica ... she came from Australia, but was working in the UK at the moment .... She was very pretty ... (I know, Lotti .... :-)))) She told us that she had already been waiting for one hour ... But no Jewel or band had arrived till then .... We could take a look in the venue ... They were preparing the stage for that night ... And the BBC was preparing for recording the whole performance ... They told us that it'll be aired sometime in June on BBC Radio One ... (check out the listings!! :-))) Some more fans joined us (not that many) .... We had been waiting for one or two hours when a bus arrived ... Only the band stepped out of it ... In our opinion Jewel was still inside .... But we could talk to the band again ... Steve recognized us (especially Lotti ...) from the day before that day ... Lotti asked Steve whether he wanted to go to a pub in Cambridge after the concert ... (like he did in Australia before) ... He said that it was okay ... "Name one and I'll come", he said ... So later that afternoon Lotti and I went to a pub in Cambridge to enquire after the closing time .... Unfortunately all pubs have to close at 11pm ... So it'd be too late (the concert would last till 11pm) ... I got all signatures in the tour book .... Only two signature was left ... one of them was the most important: Jewel's ofcourse :-))) The bus left (with Jewel) so we still had to wait before we could see her again .... After a while (not that long), the bus came again and the driver tried to park it on a parking place ... It didn't go that well .... It crashed into a picket ... One of the direction indicators was competely broken .... I think that was a nice moment for us, 'cause when Jewel stepped out of the bus (yeah, she was inside), she checked the damage ... She was laughing .... Then she crossed the street where we were waiting for her .... It were about seven or eight people ... Not that much ... She asked how we are ... Lotti asked her for a picture of her and Lotti, but she said "I want to sign all things, but no pictures". Ofcourse it was a pity, but we could understand that .... She signed all things I gave to her .... I got SEVEN signatures at that moment!!!!! She signed my poetry boo She didn't look as tired as the day before ... And she had enough time to sign her fan's cds and books .... I really appreciated that!! And it wasn't that difficult at all (like another Jewelfan wrote to the list yesterday). We only had to wait a long time, but as you understand, it was worth waiting for it ... After signing the things she entered the Corn Exchange (the name of the venue) and did her soundcheck ... In the van of the BBC Radio we could hear the soundcheck ... Jewel was laughing a lot so singing was not that good ... hehehe ... It were some very nice moments!!! More fans were joing us ... Even some from the United States! :-) At one moment both Jewel and Steve left the building ... Steve had his arm around Jewel ... They seemed to be pretty close .....hehehehe At 7pm we could enter the Corn Exchange ... There was plenty of time to buy some Jewel merchandise .... It was pretty expensive, but there was some merchandise that didn't have in London the day before ... Michiel, Chris and I had tickets for Row E ... Lotti originally had a ticket for Row Q, but she could be another Row E ticket ... We all tought it;d be the fifth row ... A women told me where I had to sit down and it was frontrow again!!! :-))))))) Exactly in the middle of the front-row, so the same as the Royal Albert Hall concert!! I was happy for Lotti that she also had a front-row ticket, 'cause initially she had not a good place .... 7.30pm was the time the show would start ... But it was delayed till 7.45pm ... (Maybe Jewel and Steve were still having a walk ....??) ... But it finally started ... Steve was as cool as during the London concert ... He drunk a glass of wine on stage ... and asked one of the assistants for a Guinness beer .... That was really cool! He gave that can away to someone on the front row, 'cause he preferred the wine .... He played the same songs as he did in London ... There were some differences, but I don't know the song names anymore .... Maybe another EDA can help me out .... ? At almost 9pm (after a 15-minutes break) Jewel came on stage .... Again she started with Near You Always ... The acoustics of the Corn Exchange were as good as the Royal Albert Hall's .... The only difference was that it was much smaller .... About 1,800 people were in there .... Ofcourse it was completely sold out .... Because the venue was much smaller, Jewel's voice sounded more intense .... It made my flesh creep ... hehehe .... a very nice feeling! Next songs were the same as in London, including the fantastic light effects!!! Deep Water and What's Simple Is True were acoustic ... The next songs were with the band ... The Mexico drugbust story sounded funnier than in London, 'cause the crowd laughed more ... that sounded cool :-))) Enter From The East, Sometimes It Be That Way and Morning Song were played solo by Jewel ... Grey Matter, Barcelona and Life Uncommon were VERY nice live performances!! Foolish Games was pretty quiet again, but not as quiet as London ... And after those songs the rocking part started .... Down So Long was beautiful ... Even when one of Jewel's guitar's string broke ... immediately Yuek Wong (guitar assistant) changed the guitar for another one ... Just like in London, Jewel asked her to do her a favour and all come to the stage ... She played another five songs: Down (VERY ROCKING!), Love Me Just Leave Me Alone, Who Will Save Your Soul, Absence of Fear and Angel Standing By .... Especially Angel Standing By was very sensitive .... The WWSYS song took another 20 minutes ... including the guitar solo and so on .... I almost forgot to mention the part of the show during which she talked about her popularity (or the absence of that) in the UK .... She said that it seems that all radio stations have banned her .... She asked everybody to call the radio stations ten times a day and ask for Down So Long ... She even put her middle finger up ("Fuck you ...") ... Maybe it'll help ... She deserves to be played many times a day on several radio stations ... The songs (lyrics) are very nice and after two indescribable beautiful concerts it'd become time ..... hehehe The applause after her performance was very long and loud .... It was very appropriate .... Many fans have been waiting after the concert at the artist's exit ... First crew and band members left the building ... Steve met Lotti again ... hehehe ... I got the signature of Steve George (keyboard player), so my tourbook now contains all signatures of Jewel and the band .... VERY nice :-))) Finally Jewel came outside .... She said "Hi guys". I was on front of the row and she signed another book (the one from Mark Bego) ... That was the ninth signature for me .... yehoooo ..... hehehe :-))) She signed very much .... ('cause there were lots of people (mostly students) waiting for her) .... All band members were still in the street talking with fans .... it was very relaxed .... :-)) The bus driver had no problem driving from the parking place ... hehehe After all, all band and crew members were in the bus (where Jewel already was) .... They left while all people (maybe hundred or so) were applauding very loud .... I'm sure that was a very nice moment for them! That was my Jewel experience .... We went to a club, but didn't go inside ... We said goodbye to the EDAs who joined us and took a taxi to our hotel .... At 1am we slept very well .... dreaming about Jewel and her fantastic performances ... hehehe Friday we (Lotti, Michiel and I) had to leave the UK .... We travelled from Cambridge to London by train .... There we thanked Chris for his effeorts to get VERY ncie seats and pretty good hotels .... The trip to London Heathrow (by underground) was pretty long .... At 3.10pm our flight left to Holland where we arrived at 5pm (it's one hour later in Holland). I took leave of Lotti and Michiel and took the train to my hometown ... (Sittard, in the southern part of Holland) ... After a long trip I arrived with pretty much bagage and MANY MANY FANTASTIC Jewel memories!!!! I'll NEVER forget this ...... Still reading this? mmm, very kind of you ... hehehe .... sorry, it's very long ... But I hope it's worth reading it ... Talk to you all soon :-)) Roel, The Other Everyday Angel, still in heaven after the London and Cambridge concerts ... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ICQ# 16784628 "Lost is a puzzle of stars that breathes like water and chews like stone" ~~ Jewel, The Everyday Angel http://www.r-cobben.demon.nl http://EveryDayAngels.net/RoelJewel ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #250 ***************************
