You'll go about 5-7 miles (?) before you see a bowling alley at a light on your right. Continue west, watching for the foodbank on your left. You'll have to go to the next light and take a left/uturn to go back to the foodbank (at the light is a Super StopNShop and a Home Quarters store in a shopping mall). We'll meet inside the foodbank at noon. Tell them you are with the group EveryDay Angels. >From wherever else, get on Route 9 and either head east until you get to the foodbank (then reverse direction), or head eastbound on Route 9 and you'll eventually have the foodbank on your righthand side. I believe this is my first posting. Anyways, the reason I am writting is because I will love to go to the concert in Irvine in southern California but I don't drive, so I am beging someone who is going to give me a ride so I can see my favorite singer Jewel for the first time in person. I live in the city of West Covina, part of the Los Angeles County. So if someone is willing to take me to the Irvine concert, please email me to give you the details of my address. Hopping to hear soon from you nice people EDAs, I send you my thanks in advance. I hear it's a pretty good half hour programme. I'm surprised about the little airplay Jewel is getting over there in the US for DSL. I've heard it every night without fail for quite a few weeks now on one of Sydneys local radio stations when I work the evening shift at the local petrol station (thats 'gas station' for you yanks). The job can get tiresome and boring but when the song comes on, I crank the volume and tell the customers to take a hike for the next couple minutes (not really but I think of doing that). Anyway, so make those calls to the Stations (radio stations) and request it. later, - -Sang. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 May 1999 03:58:21 EDT From: JewelBlues@aol.com Subject: Re: jewel-digest V4 #243 RE: SPIRIT: I have bashed it i nthe past --but I do want to state that LIFE UNCOMMON is a GREAT song..and I hope her next single...JEWELBLUES ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 07 May 1999 11:16:51 +0100 From: Brian Leahy Subject: DUBLIN setlist - 2nd May, 1999 Haven't seen this posted yet ...... No pictures, and starts by saying that Jewel was born in Alaska, but in view of the review I think we can forgive him that :) Live Gig By name and by nature Jewel Albert Hall, London SW7 JEWEL has one of those life stories that sound almost too good to be true. Born in Alaska, on a homestead without running water and electricity, she moved to California, lived in a camper van, signed a record deal and sold ten million copies of her debut album in America - all before she had turned much more than 20. The only blip in the plot to date has been that her career has been considerably slower to take off in Britain. Last year her second album, Spirit, confirmed her as arguably the most sparkling female singer-songwriter since Joni Mitchell, and her current tour should go a long way to establishing her here. On previous visits she had played solo but this time she has brought a five-piece band which added greater depth to her beguiling and seductive songs. Her lyrics are sensitive and poetic, but the band served to emphasise that she also excels at radio-friendly pop melodies that are inventive and subtle and far more complex than the usual three-chord strum. Her voice moved from a piping little-girl-lost-treble to a mature vibrating resonance, not only in the course of the same song but even in the same phrase. A solo slot with just her guitar showed that she is compelling in the Joan Baez troubadour role. Then the band returned and she slotted into rock babe mode every bit as convincingly as Sheryl Crow. Her diction was a delight - even on the hardest-edged numbers every word was crystal clear. A new song, Love Me or Just Leave Me Alone, has some wonderful Dylanesque lyrics, ending with the line: "Your sister was a stockbroker, but you ain't nothing but a turtleneck." There was also a transcendent version of her hit single Who Will Save Your Soul, with a vocal that was part gospel, part opera and totally Jewel before she returned for a second encore with some uninhibited yodelling. "What's simple is true," she had sung earlier. It summed up the Jewel philosophy but the truth is, of course, that her appealing naturalness is also the result of serious craft. This was an exquisite performance. Their chief feature, is that unlike normal cows that taste good, these taste bad, being made of plywood of all things. It also has the unique ability of disassembling itself into a small confined space for transport, and then reassembling itself when the time is right. Only 2 specimens of this species are known to exist. The first was spotted backstage at Jewel concerts, the second a little later, at EDAF gatherings during and after acts of kindness. I personally have only seen the second specimen. I believe Alan Bershaw may be able to verify the existence of the first. This species of cow has a very peculiar trait in that it seems to inspire any human who walks near it with the desire to rope it and therefore instilling said individual with the desire to rope anything and everything thereafter. Backstage at Jewel shows, any member of the staff and Jewel have been said to be so afflicted with this desire that it is now a common sight. At EDAF gatherings a similiar phenomena has also been seen, with every EDA who has roped "Woody", or "Scardy Cow" as he has been so called, infected with the desire to rope. This second specimen was first spotted at the Beach Cleanup in South Amboy about 2 weeks ago. >From personal experience, I can relate the truth of the trait of this species of cow. With rope in hand, there is an incredible calm that settles over your consciousness as you twirl the lasso above your head and release, watching the rope drift over the cow's horns. There has been much discussion about propagating the numbers of this rare species, but until more is learned about their creation, little can be done to increase their numbers. Much has also been said of creations and llamas. The head of this apparently modular animal has been spotted in a photograph of the last EDAF act of kindness at the Walk for Hunger. It can currently be seen at http://www.edaf.org/walk4hunger/walk4hunger.html with the EDAs who were also affected by its powerful trait. On the Walk for Hunger page, if you go to the gallery section, you can gaze upon the head of one of only two rare specimens of this apparently very rare species of cow. It is rumored that the second cow will make another appearance at the Foodbank in Worcester, MA this Saturday following another act of kindness. It may be that this second cow may possess an unusual second trait, in that its sitings appears to be directly linked with acts of kindness. There will hopefully be more information later about this unusual species as we collect more information from each of its appearances. A light rain is falling and mist is beginning to blanket Kensington Gardens as Jewel drifts on to the Albert Hall stage. Perfect weather for her. All that is missing is the happy-ending rainbow. Jewel Kilcher, the world's only Alaskan pop star, has found a 10-million-selling niche in fragile songs that seek parity in male-female relations. She is of the post-Alanis school that expresses itself not by howling but by going beyond anger into Joni Mitchell-like wistfulness. In a purely aural sense, she's much more palatable that Morissette, and America has rewarded her by snapping up not just the albums Pieces Of You and Spirit but a volume of earnest poetry. This country has yet to succumb, however, as she twice points out during the show. "A woman asked me yesterdaywhat it was like to be 'so unembraced' by Britain," she recounts ruefully, to indignant clucks from the largely American house. Singing for the first time with a band, Jewel radiates an integrity that ennobles even the platitudes of What's Simple is True and Deep Water. "It's nothing without love," she sighs on the latter, as clear and artless as a young Judy Collins. Her openess, coupled with a physical slightness and blond mane, make it tempting to dismiss her as irrevocably cute. "I have a recurring nightmare that I'll be mistaken for Baby Spice," she tells us. Yet there's a self-belief that enables her to send the band off and play four numbers alone. But Jewel's true gift is of the gab. Whenever things threaten to dissolve into tweeness, she rustles up a lcaonic anecdote that makes one wonder what kind of life she lives outside these songs. One ends with the memorable pay-off, "So we're standing next to this mountain of pot and I have an AK-47 in my hand, and I'm thinking, 'This is a Kodak moment.'" Surely we have room for a girl like this. 3/5 rating By Caroline Sullivan - -- Nosh http://listen.to/jkilcher ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #244 ***************************
