Some weeks, however, we will have a specific topic (such as this week's topic of violence). For the most part, these discussions will be for EDAF members only, although sometimes we will invite others to join in (such as this week's invitation to all the EDAs). The online discussions will be held: IRC: Tuesday nights at 9:30 EST, channel #EDAF on dal.net AOL: Thursday nights at 9:30 EST, chatroom EDAF *** EDAF FORUM TO DISCUSS COLUMBINE SHOOTINGS THIS WEEK What was the root cause of the tragic Colorado killings? Marilyn Manson? Natural Born Killers? Wiley Coyote & the Road Runner? Doom? Poor parenting? Failed school programs? Lax gun control? The internet? Was it all of the above? Some of the above? Or none of the above? EDAF members have expressed an interest in discussing the problems of teen violence, determining where some of the problems may lie and where we can best focus our energies in order to make a difference. To this end, we have decided to go directly to those who are in a postition to know best -- teens and preteens who are in the very middle of it. Although the new weekly EDAF chats will usually be for EDAF members only, we will occasionally invite others to join in on special discussions. For the debut of these weekly chats, we are looking at one of the most important issues facing us today -- societal violence, particularly the disturbing trend in teenage violence. We invite and encourage anyone who has a particular interest, insight, or opinion on this subject to join us online at this week's meetings. We would especially like to see many of the younger EDAs there. If the rooms become full, we'll try to open additional rooms as needed. Please remember to be respectful of everyone's opinion -- they are all as valid as your own. We want to hear as many opinions as possible. (The purpose of this is NOT to validate any one opinion over another!) Upon entering the room, please state your age. We hope to see many of you there. *** THE ACTS OF KINDNESS SCRAPBOOK PROJECT We have well over 100 EDAs committing acts of kindness and reporting them back to the EDAF in time for Jewel's birthday. The acts will be documented in a scrapbook and given to Jewel this summer, and a digital copy made available for all to see and be inspired by! If you'd like to participate, email us at EDAFinfo@smoe.org and we'll make sure you get the information you need. But hurry! :-) *** ANOTHER WEEKEND OF FIGHTING HUNGER IN NEW ENGLAND! Next Saturday (May 8th), the Worcester (MA) foodbank affiliate of our partnering Second Harvest Foodbank Network is in desperate need of help to sort donations that will be collected and brought in by the local letter carriers. The Foundation is gathering EDAs to lend a hand for this weekend, following up this past weekend's successful May 2nd volunteer day with the Project Bread "Walk for Hunger" in Boston. In Worcester, the EDAF plans to meet at the foodbank at 11:30 AM, put in several hours of service and then go over to a nearby EDAs house for barbeque and some plywood cow roping (beginners welcome)! Contact Dennis at EDAFinfo@aol.com if you'd like to get in on the fun, and help many of your neighbors at the same time. Volunteering at a foodbank is easy to do, and a lot of fun. Similar programs are happening all over the country, so don't let geography stop you from joining in! For your nearest Second Harvest affiliate, please go to the online map locator at: http://www.secondharvest.org/websecha/f_getouc.htm California in particular seems to have a vast network of foodbanks and volunteer opportunities for ambitious EDAs! After being inspired by Jewel's HGH benefit concert out in LA last weekend, we bet you're all looking for just this sort of opportunity to put that inspiration to work! :-) Until next week, take care of yourselves and your world! Quite some time ago I remember someone (can't remember who, sorry) requesting information about Jewel's music and poetry and something along the lines of why she doesn't mix the two? Well, I finally transcribed part of an Australian interview where she talks about it. So, whoever was looking for it, here it is and I hope I'm not to late for whatever it was/is you need(ed) it for. (part of)Interview w/Jewel on the Austereo Network Hour of power w/Keith Williams March 10, 1999 KW: It may seem a silly question, however, what is the difference, Jewel, between writing lyrics for songs and poetry? J: Umm, poetry always came first for me, since I was young. I didn't start writing songs 'til relatively late, when I was 17. Umm, and I don't know, I think ... I guess, I'm more loyal to my poetry, it comes more frequently - I'm more prolific as a poet and I think it's more honest and direct. I don't know why they're different, they just..a song comes to me with a melody or it doesn't... KW: What I'm saying is, could you go, possibly, into your book and say, "Ok, I'll make this into a song?" Or is it totally different styles - a different art? (Funny noise is made) J: It's really a different art for me, it has a completely different... Did i push something down? (referring to the noise, laughing) ***Jewel and Keith get sidetracked here, and talk about the noise that Jewel accidently made, for a second. It's quite funny, but irrelevant to the poetry stuff **** KW: (after all that) They're different crafts ... J: They are very different crafts, it ummm... the rhythm of a poem doesn't have a meter, with a song you constantly (clicking) have this going and you have to get to a rhyme at the end of each verse and with a poem it's free verse, there's no pentameter, so it's ... or if it is, it's a very specific kind, and I can't ... I'll take lines from poems. 'Foolish Games' was like that - I took lines from ...poems, but you can't take a whole poem and put it to music. So, that's the part of the interview where she talks about her poetry.Hope it helps someone... Take Care Jess ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 May 1999 17:47:34 PDT From: "Jess Smith" Subject: speaking of bad puns ... Hi again! Kim Lees posted an interview the other and mentioned that the heading and the last line made for some of the worst puns ever. And it got me thinking about how "overpunned" ( I think I just invented a new word ) our Jewel's name is. Magazines seem to have a thing for thinking they are clever and the only ones to ever have realised the pun-potential of "Jewel". Here are some funny examples I've come across: "Jewel" as in "gem" puns: Jewel in the rough A Gem of a Girl Jewel is a real Gem in the world of pop Precious Jewel Jewel - No Diamond In The Rough Bedazzled by Jewel A Rough Diamond A real gem Gem of a Personality Glittering Jewel Jewel sparkles for fans Gem looses her lustre (wasn't impressed with this article! It was actually titled "The birth of the new Madonna"?!?!?! What I've written was the heading in the contents.) Jewel unpolished (that was the cover title in an edition of "Who" Australias version of "People". The article was titled, "Semi-precocious" "Jewel" as in "Dual" puns: Jewel Personality Dual Jewel Jewel Control worth a mention puns: Spirit of Jewel Jewel Takes a Stanza One Jewel; many facets Just thought they were interesting. Hope you've had a laugh, or a cry as it may be. They are quite sad aren't they? Take Care Jess BTW: Most of these articles came from posts from EDA's, so - "Thanks" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 May 1999 18:11:58 PDT From: "Jess Smith" Subject: US/Aussie EDA guitar pics Was anyone in Australia able to get EDA guitar pics. I mean, firstly, there's the problem of sending a donation of 2 "US" dollars and then there's the problem of sending a self-stamped-addressed envelope. Wouldn't the return postage have to be American. In that case - how do you do that? Are there any US EDAs willinging to just send me one or two picks out of the goodness of their hearts to help out a poor little Aussie EDA? Or, are there any EDAs who can tell me how I go about getting some. Much appreciated, Ta! I'd appreciate it if you'd remember this. It'll save me a lot of headaches & I know thats important to you! ;-) In order to help EDAs, I post most of the tour dates to you & include them on Jewel's website BEFORE most venues release ticket information to the public. I've let EDAs know tour dates early for a few years now & I want to continue doing it, but I need you to do your own followup work. Every day now, I get anywhere from 25 to 50 emails asking me when tickets go on sale to a specific venue & prices on tickets (& even quite a few asking me how good the seats are in section C row G seats 18 & 19 at a specific venue! LOL!). Many EDAs are on the right track but then write me for the venue phone number, too. I cannot possibly keep track of these kinds of details for shows all over the world & cannot answer these specific questions. These emails will go unanswered, so please, rather than write me, call the venue or your local ticket agency for specifics. Many venues in North America have websites now. Check it out. For venue phone numbers, simply call directory information in the venue's city. That easy. If the venue doesn't have the information you want, then you must be patient until they do. Such is the price of knowing first. Beginning later this week, Jewel's website calendar will be updated every day. Current information will be posted accurately. Any information not yet posted will be when its confirmed. Bookmark the calendar for your convenience. We'll also soon have an email address set up with "tour date" auto-responder. For those without web access, this will keep you updated whenever you like. I'm trying my best to get you the tour dates well in advance for most shows, but you have to take it from there. Post what you learn. It'll help others. Thanks for your understanding on this issue, MrBB ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 May 1999 00:09:55 -0400 (EDT) From: Rickey Yeung Subject: PNC Bank Arts Center tickets Hi, how ya doin'! I doubt you can help here, but I'll try anyway. Do you have two extra tickets to the PNC concert you are willing to sell? I called ticketmaster a little too late, and the good seats were all gone. Thanks, Rickey, The busy college EDA who has been trying to go to a Jewel concert for over three years. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #237 ***************************
