Extremely relevant Joni Mitchell quote, Jen! In my opinion, it's kinda funny because I posted that exact same quote to the EDAs back in 1996. Believe it or not, some people were complaining about Jewel changing then, too. Some of those complaining then are still around & still complaining. I guess that means what they were previously complaining about is now what they wish for... Or something like that... I kinda see it as "chronic missing the boat syndrome". The past no longer exists & the future doesn't exist yet so I prefer to enjoy now whenever possible. ;-) Alan ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 May 1999 04:02:52 -0700 (PDT) From: Abigail Greif Subject: NJC: Israeli EDA gathering? She was indeed asking questions off a sheet of paper, but they weren't particularly stupid questions. She mentioned the book of poetry and tried to ask if people at the gigs would hear any poetry - Jewel basically blanked her. When asked what people should expect at the gigs, Jewel just said "er..Music.." and that was it. You could hear people all over the country thinking, "No? Really?! I thought you were going to tap-dance..." she wouldn't comment on how her poetry has influenced her music (or if it has) and was just so infernally obtuse that it was painful to watch. I thought for a while it might just be me who thought that she was a little difficult yesterday, but to quote another mail I received ... " Jewel was on the news, (strange in itself), at about ten to nine, i waited for it to come on, taped it and ran like hell for college. They lied though, how evil. She only did one song, "down so long", live-yes and quite good but she was a bit bitchy to the presenter giving one word answers and acting as if even that was too much trouble. " Which basically summed my opinion up too... > So basically I think a decent interviewer can make an incredible amount of > difference. That's true, although in this case, I don't think it was the main factor. Solitary man meant for Jewel. By ARA JANSEN. MUSIC POP WA THOSE who got to Jewel's Perth shows to see the opening act would have noticed a lone guy and his guitar. His name was Steve Poltz, a singer, songwriter and guitarist with a great sense of humour. And, if you got close enough, you'd have noticed next to his bottle of red Californian wine was a Barbie-type doll which he kissed before starting the set. Poltz, who loves artists like Woody Guthrie and Louden Wainwright III, was also the guy brave enough to try out a brand new song for the first time on a crowd who had no idea who he was, as well as asking us to woof along to a chorus about Chewbacca in a song about Star Wars. He also played some tracks from his One Left Shoe album. Though released more than a year ago, it has taken this much time for the singer to gain enough momentum to take it around the world. "I'm a story teller," Poltz says. "That's what I want to be. I've played with my own band for years and like having a band to kick it in but it's liberating being alone." His recent sojourn was made a bit easier by opening for Jewel and also playing guitar in her band. Poltz and Jewel's history dates back further though. The two wrote Jewel's massive hit You Were Meant For Me while they were dating. He was "the guy" in the accompanying video. Jewel also appeared on Poltz's record and lent a writing hand too. Poltz's record company hasn't always been quite sure what to do with him, given One Left Shoe's first single Silver Lining has a distinct country tilt to it and the other songs lean more towards the love songs. "Originally I wanted to call the record Hawaiian Songs That Don't Sound Hawaiian and make it a double album," Poltz says, with a subversive gleam in his eye. "They said I couldn't do that so it became a single album called One Left Shoe." Intent on making music on his own terms, Poltz has also recently recorded an independent album of punk rock blasts called Answering Machine. If he had his own way, Poltz would be releasing at least two albums every year, a solo effort and a band one. But playing live is what Poltz loves the most, the feeling of flying on stage without a net. He doesn't always succeed, he says, but that's part of the fun and the challenge to make it through. "I love getting on stage and taking a chance and it could be the dumbest thing I ever do but the pay off on the other side is so big. I like taking big risks," he says. "I've got a sense of humour and people always say 'you can't do that on stage' but it's all about that. I love to mix it up and won't do three depressing songs in a row." Seeing how I'm pretty sure that i'm the only EDA in Arizona, I dont want to go to an Arizona show with one of my friends who wont even want to try and meet Jewel. SO I want to go to the SanDiego show. I would really like to go with another EDA in Cali cause i don't really know my way around. I'm looking for someone who could buy me a ticket (I'll pay you when I get there) tomarrow when they go on sale or whenever so I won't have to sit by a compleet stranger. I'm thinking about moving there this summer so I want to check out the sceen. HOPEFULLY someone will sympathise with me living in an EDA scarce state. I'm looking for a friend, thanks. It said that the majority of the songs will be with her band but some will be acoustic too, and that requests will feature. So, my question is what do we request ??, i'm going to the london gig on wednesday, and reckon that it'd be really cool to hear "Down" as i've only heard it on a rubbish realaudio file. laters dave"the anti-distablishmentaryenistic" angel ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 May 1999 22:37:11 EDT From: Laura792@aol.com Subject: Jewel on Seventeen Hi, I ended up with an extra copy of Seventeen magazine with Jewel on the cover. This is little while ago story, but you will love it. During Jewel stay at here for concert, she'd appears on radio. It wasn't fresh content almost for me.It's some common Q&A's there, about great sales on 1st album, movie debut, poetry book's thing..etc. and she sang "Hands" with her accorstic guitar.it was nice. After the song, they back to talk. Then DJ Chris(he's raised in hawaii but never have talked about hawaii.) mentioned that one Japanese Sumo wrestler who is Yokozuna grade named "Wakanohana" (It's a stage name.his real name is more easier,Masaru :), he likes her songs!! this wrestler listen to Jewel's song before he's go out to a match. then Jewel said "Really?? WOW!" and "I Love that, that's so great!" It sounds she was very very glad to hear that. Pretty Cool, huh? and later, one promoter gaves a Sumo trading card to her.and she was pleased with that as well. I thought I should've brought my Sumo collection for Jewel on the concert day..damn..I liked Sumo and still left some Sumo goods in my closet. well,I just want to let you know this cool stuffs. c-ya! Lisa F. Tokyo,Japan(Japanese angel?) and if you have interest in my Sumo-collections,mail me privately :) ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #232 ***************************
