She already performed the song on Leno's show and it would have been quite rote and unimaginative to do it exactly the same way. Her effort to revamp the song should be applauded even though I personally don't like this version. And to anyone who says it was a "butchering" of the album version must remember that if anything is a "butchering" it is that version off of Spirit. Those people need to hear the original solo acoustic of Down So Long that she did back in 94-96 in all its glory with the lyrics she and Spirit's producer "butchered" out and replaced with the band version that is present on that record. Just my two cents. Oh, and Jewel always came off as conceited in interviews, I find it refreshing. Most celebrity humbleness comes off as very fake and contrived. Besides, again, Jewel always came across as a bit haughty and standoffish. I mean, when she was playing coffeehouses and small clubs she was quoting Dostoevsky and Neruda and spewing her own philosophies openly, "hand manifest thought" and such. Hopefully she keeps growing her hair out, as always I hate the make-up but I think the long hair gives her a cool, hippie-ish Joni Mitchell look, would be perfect for Woodstock. And wouldn't it be cool if she tried a cover of Joni's while there, something like "Woodstock" or "Big Yellow Taxi" or "A Case of You" or "Turbulent Indigo" or "Slouching Toward Bethlehem." But I'm getting ahead of myself. Woodstock theorizing there will be enough of on this list come July I'm sure. But oh, her Janis-esque version of "Summertime" which she has bee playing again recently would be a good idea too. But anyway, that's all form me. Later, Sean Hooks ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Apr 1999 00:48:06 EDT From: Harrisbros@aol.com Subject: NJC: Warning: Roping Plywood Cows is Highly Addictive! Hi. My name is Harris, and I rope plywood cows. :-} My story is a common one, but one that bears repeating, especially since Jewel is such an important role model for many of you... Several months back, MrBB (Alan) wrote of his newfound passion for roping plywood animals. Specifically, plywood cows. I'm sure it started out innocently enough, just a casual "Hey, MrBB, wanna try this?" as Jewel or one of her staff extended a looped lariat his way. Of course, Alan likely laughed his trademark laugh, then took the rope. A few rotations around his head, and the release of the rope. In slow motion, the snaking rope falls downward on the unsuspecting plywood beast. Whether MrBB hit it his first try or not, matters not. He had taken the first step. Alan shared this with the list, admitting the nocturnal activity that now took place in his home basement. Alarmed, I warned the list that this was potentially dangerous and addictive, and suggested that Alan needed help, cause "Friends don't let friends rope plywood animals". Then I began my own downward spiral to the dark side. Wandering through Wal*Mart, I would casually admire rope products. Unsatisfied, I visited Home Depot, and fondled their rope. Then one day, I received a videotape in the mail from Alan. The tape was of Jewel's RoseAnn Show appearance, where she roped her personal plywood cow and several audience members onstage. Jewel had "outted" herself on national TV, confessing her attraction to rodeo team roping! That was the final straw that splintered the plywood cow's back. Utilizing the latest in VCR freeze frame technology, advanced computer graphics tools and a pair of scissors, I reverse-engineered the design of the roping cow. Recycling cardboard U-Haul boxes, I laboriously reconstructed a life-size replica of Danny Ferrington's controversial masterpiece of wood, the fabled Jewel Plywood Roping Cow! A week later, I found myself in a tack shop, wearing dark glasses and buying a waxed practice lariat "for a friend". That night, I roped my stairstepper, dining room set and somewhat unnerved dog until the wee hours of the morning. Two days later, I constructed the very first beta version of the Harris Snap-On Plywood Roping Cow (tm). And like any junkie, I yearned to share my drug with others. I decided that the New Jersey EDA gathering this past weekend was the time and the place to do so! After the EDAF Beach Cleanup Saturday, I unleashed the roping demon on my fellow EDAs in the Campbell's front yard. Skepticism gave way to curiosity, curiosity gave way to the "just one more time" syndrome, and the sparkle of discovery in their eyes gave way to the wild look of obsession. Albert and Abel were caught roping the cow in the garage at 3 AM Saturday night. Eric snuck out several times to the backyard Sunday. The last to fall to the siren call of the wooden cow was Tammy, who didn't touch the rope until an hour before we all left Sunday night, and was last seen roping her mailbox, her husband Rob, her daughter and anything else that had not yet ran in wide-eyed terror from her! As the weekend wound to a close, a couple of EDAs attempted to con me out of my cow. Tom attempted to murder me for it (a horseshoe to the head is NO coincidence, I tell you!). Tammy's fingers had to be pried off my lariat as we pulled out of her driveway. Today, I had an email from Tammy referring to online web sites that sell roping equipment and related paraphenalia. The plywood djinni is out of the bottle, and it won't fit back in! Beware the seduction of roping plywood animals. It got Jewel. It got Alan. It got me. It got at least a half dozen EDAs this weekend. It will get YOU if you let it! And if it does, the first step to recovery is to repeat after me (use your name, of course!): Hi. My name is Harris, and I rope plywood cows. :-} Yippee Ki Yay Angels, Dennis Harris ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Apr 1999 01:34:47 EDT From: Stevie3103@aol.com Subject: Karen Kilgariff bashing Jewel at concert-Leno Tonight, I went to see Margaret Cho - the comedian that had her own show, "All American Girl" and her opening act was a girl named Karen Kilgariff. She was good but she was really bashing Jewel like there was no tomorrow. She started off talking about babies because we had a baby in the audience crying and she talk about how she hates Jewel and she's such a baby on WWSYS. Then, she went on to talking about how she's so famous now and that she's on every talk show - with her mother. And she said, "if you are 24 and your mother is your best friend, you're a loser" and how she's singing about a man in YWMFM and then about eggs and pancakes. It was just really disturbing...But the Margaret Cho end of it was soooooo awesome. It was great!!! I thought Leno was alright. The part of her defining herself as a "rock star" was ehh but it was a joke so it was all good. Stevie the RENT angel ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Apr 1999 01:30:56 +0000 From: shallowend@asan.com Subject: NJC:EDAF weekend Well lets see it started with me picking up able about 3 hours late cause he lost my phone # and had to take the traain all the way home then come back. Then off to Rob and Tammys, where we met up with everyone. Then Dennis showed up and the poker started, after about 22 hours of wacky poker it was time to play. One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish go fish, a card game made for 3 year olds that we could'nt figure out the rules of. Oh yeah I forgot to metntion Dennis licked me dose that make me a Harris. Then up way to early, quick breakfast and off to the beach. As amy said we picked up alot of trash. My group was me able and Eric and our big thing was plastic pieces must have been about 150 of them. Plus we found the only condom, still in it's wrapper thank god. By the way who drive to the beach to throw away a toliette, just wondering. The beach clean up qwas actually really fun. then we went to denny's and of to major fun duplex or whatever it's called, golf was fun, but I refuse to pay 1$ to play a video game, these thing were a rip off when they only cost a quater. So it was back to tammy's for taco's, then more poker, denis did'nt play this time so it all went much quicker. Then off To bed I actually got about 9 hours of sleep a record for an EDA gathering. next morning tammy made waffles and Tom Proven, made esome really good egg dish using left overs. I planned on leaving early on sunday but ended up staying till about 7pm, sitting in on and EDAF meeting. We got alot done but there was still a ton left to clean up so hopefully more people will show up next time. John ------------------------------ Date: 27 Apr 99 23:34:45 MDT From: Jonathan Knapp Subject: My honest opinion of Jewel on Leno Dear Fellow EDA's: Some of you seem to be upset at the way Jewel performed her title song "Down So Long" on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno the other night. Well, I don't know if any of you people honestly care about my opinion on the show so I am going to say that I do not care about a lot of your negative opinions on the show. You see, I happen to have liked the way that she sang "Down So Long" on the Tonight Show. I thought it was more uplifting and more exciting. I thought that Jewel put a little more 'oomph' into it. It was great. She was totally into her band and the band was totally into her, they were grooving. There is no way that we can put that down if we are the Jewel fans that we say we are. Now, I am not writing this to tell all of you about my negative feelings towards any of you, I just feel that Jewel deserves a little more credit than what you are giving her. In my opinion, we should not criticise the way that SHE performs one of HER songs that SHE wrote. Get what I am saying? It takes a lot of courage to adapt a song in that way and have people still like it. In closing, please people. Do not watch a Jewel concert or broadcast or live performance or anything that has to do with Jewel and nit-pick the things that she does wrong. It isn't right and that is not the reason that we are here. We are here to encourage Jewel and to help Jewel achieve her goals. Don't listen to one of her songs and say to yourself or to others that "uh-oh, her hair isn't straight down, no one likes that". OH WELL!!! THAT IS WHAT SHE LIKES! And don't say "Oh man, there is no way that she could have hit those high notes, she better not try that again". SHUT UP! MAYBE SHE WANTS TO TRY AND EXPAND HER VOCAL RANGE! Geez.... Alrighty, sorry for that yelling, didn't mean it. I guess I should let you all go now, have a wonderful day and keep in touch if you can. Every move Jewel makes is analysed with an endless list of mails saying "Is she becoming this or that". Every move she makes, its she's becoming too this or too that. IF and I say IF she was a bit starrish I'm sure nobody on this list is perfect, yet somehow that is expected from Jewel. Yet people cannot understand why stars dislike the media in their ways of analysing their every move. Yet we do it on the list whever she goes out in public, I would say we are worse than such papparrazi media/gossip. Jewel is Jewel, she's not perfect, why not just accept her the way she is, warts and all? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 23:02:43 PDT From: "Erin Benoit" Subject: A bit of all the recent performances... Halo! I first wanted to say that I too would LOVE a copy of a taping of the HGH Vogue thing...I can't wait to see her live for myself but I have to wait until at least July and even that will be a few day road trip... Secondly, I thought the Jay Leno performance was definitely a unique Jewel thing...but I always complain when she sings her songs exactly how they are on the CD so I can't have it both ways...but I really loved that last described by others as a yelling note...I loved that! It brought tears to my eyes. Third, What happened with REgis and Kathie Lee? Jewel wasn't on...Mike, MR BB, anyone???? Where was she? Drink Chocolate milk! JEWELBLUES ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Apr 1999 23:07:29 +1200 From: Nicholas Wong Subject: Why is everyone dissing Jewel??? isn't it amazing how quickly people would pounce on an imperfection a person has and then goes further to assume that the reason for it, is fame or money or both. I haven't seen the Jay Leno show which is what all the mumble-jumble is about. All I know is this, I went to see Jewel in Wellington on March 20th, it was the second to last concert she was to do on the Austrailian leg of her world tour. In the interviews that were done in New Zealand, you could clearly see Jewel was exhausted and in the concert i thought the tour as a whole has taken a toll on her. But she nailed the concert. The interviews were good, sure, she did make a few comments that would have been like waving a red flag to a bull to some people on this post. But she is human. It is rather lame to bring fame and fortune into it all, because I think Jewel has not changed since she first became known worldwide, she is still the "on to it" chick that has a mind of her own and isn't afraid to express it. With the comments she made that has inflammed a number of people, i think she said it because she knew it was "typical" for someone of her status to say it, though deep down i think Jewel is really taking the piss out of the fame and fortune culture. In general i have found that people are quick to note the bumps on a person and are very slow to acknowledge the good side of that person. Jewel is a wonderful being. I have been touched and will forever be touched by her music. Feel free to start dissing me.
