Yes, while you West Coasters were chasing Jewel, we were having a heck of a time ourselves in the East! It started Friday night at the Campbell's. Eric (Crashboy) and I were first and second to arrive. Dennis, who was due "NO LATER THAN 9" pulled in, in typical Harris form, at around - oh, say, midnight - with Albert in tow. Other Friday night arrivals including John Hickey, Abel, Rachel & Tom O'Brien and Tom Proven. The men all started playing some wacked out version of Poker that just got weirder and weirder (especially when Dennis was dealing - go figure). I'm not sure who won - in fact, I'm not sure if they ever were able to agree on whether the white chips should equal $1.00, $5.00 or $100,000. Guess those details aren't so important when you're not playing for real money! Needless to say, no one got to sleep before 4am, try though I did. Saturday morning we hit the beach - our adopted beach, that is. We were joined by several other EDA's - 18 in total! We filled almost 30 garbage bags, equalling an estimated weight of about 600 pounds of garbage! The most frequently found objects were bottles (97 plastic, 316 glass); surprisingly, the cigarette butt count was relatively low - only 97 (Eric and I alone collected 127 last time we did a beach cleanup). Maybe it means less people are smoking? :-) After our productive morning, we decided to have some fun, so we headed over to Funmania for some mini-golf and video games. Watch out for Sue H. - I ended up with a mouth full of (strangely) blue water when she splashed us with her golf club! The most fun for me was riding on the Harley game. I learned that it's probably a good thing I don't have a motorcycle! Saturday afternoon it was time for - yes - PLYWOOD COW ROPIN'! Yeehaw! Dennis made a new and improved plywood cow (it looked like it was straight from South Park) and we spent the afternoon roping the damn thing. It really IS strangely addictive! I guess we'll have to change our motto to "friends DO let friends rope plywood cows"! Don't be surprised if these splintery creatures start popping up at EDA gatherings everywhere! So Saturday night and Sunday were basically spent chilling out. The weekend was awesome - fun, relaxing, and productive. You guys are the greatest! Thanks to all who came out and helped! I just wanted to say that, the pics are awesome. They look great, and the finish on them really dosent wear out, I've been playing with the one that I got from Denis on sunday all day today and it still looks great. Also at first I thought they were a bit thin but I like the thikness. I'll be ordering more as soon as I get my hands on some $$. John PS I'll get around to writing about the weekend eventually. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 22:16:14 -0400 From: fire-and-rain@juno.com Subject: Jewel & James Taylor Hidy ho! I got a question for all you long-time list members. Way back when Jewel-fever was just taking off I heard that there were plans for a Jewel/James Taylor album but they got cancelled when JT said he was nary to fond of her music. Can anybody expand on that? By the way, any diehard Jewel/ JT fans out there? Love Ya. Peace Out. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 22:38:20 EDT From: NiKoS12@aol.com Subject: Re: Jay Leno: Thumbs Down You could have not been more wrong! I think Jewel sang DSL exceptionally well. And hell, she even looked great. I loved all the opening how she added some "baby oh ah eh" scats. Variety is the spice of life. It was very refreshing to see Jewel is one of the few mainstream artists, who changes the songs around. Seriously, listen to the musical guests on SNL, and their songs sound exactly like their radio versions. I'll admit it was different. But if you had heard her at the HGH Benefit the night before, you would have heard that version of DSL. She was just rocking out the night before on every song and it spilled over into the next day. <> She wasn't at the microphone and they usually turn off the microphone right after the song ends. So even if she did say it, we probably wouldn't have heard it. <> Again, part of what she did at the HGH Benefit. The intention was to scream it out. And considering that Angel Standing By goes WAY higher than DSL, I don't think it was too high a note for her. <> Let's consider for a moment that she was out all night after the Vogue gig and then gets a grand total of 3 minutes to talk to Jay. And what does he talk about? Not her new album or her charity event the night before, but a bunch of little dogs that aren't even hers. Even Jewel has her bad days, but I think she was just a little tired and a little upset that she didn't get to talk about anything important before she was shooed out. <> Jay was outta time by the time it came to her interview. I think he was just trying to wrap things up. Imagine you just had a very cool successful charity event the night before and are starting a new tour soon, but all the interviewer talks about is little dogs. I'd be upset too. :-) I liked her performance. Too cool. I think she's trying to get away from the stereotypic naive little girl Jewel. Kudos to her!! :-) Lori Jupiter's Angel email: larthur@fullerton.edu ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 23:10:02 EDT From: Freakbus6@aol.com Subject: Rolling Stone Kurt Cobain, with a picture full of digity, is on the cover of the latest rolling stone. He won the artist of the decade, and was included several times with the other top 150 albums of the 90's. Jewel was put in there for pieces of you, they have a nice little segment, and a picture of her album cover, but its sweet that Jewel was concidered one of the best. I hope you guys get this issue, and have a good day. Jewel's a master at it. She's always saying stuff like that too make fun of herself, being a "big rock star." And by the way, Jewel said "But now that I'm a rock star, I figure, it's time to get big sun glasses and a little dog," in her cute little wanna-be New York accent. She was just joking around....no biggie . Oh, I thought David Araquette (sp?) was soooo funny. Well at least his costume was. (or whatever Mike said was right) Jewel: Thanks. Nice to be back. then it's crowd noise and commercial. Ok so it's not much but since Mike didn't know for sure what she said there, I could hear it pretty well and I"m sure that's what she said. The whole time she had the downcast eyes and shy look. By now I'm sure ya'll are tired of the posts about Leno...however I'd like to add my two cents to the melting pot. Jewel, as many have said, was beautiful as always. However, the song she sang was almost unrecognizable. I'm sorry, I love Jewel to death, but that was not DSL. Mebbe she can't stand singing the song anymore or she just doesn't like Leno, but I've gotta say the song was performed pretty poorly. I also have to agree, whether she was joking or not, she did give the impression of snootiness during her short interview. That's my story and I'm sticking with it.
