I'm Singaporean and new to the list. I found a Jewel interview taken from http://www.mediacity.com.sg and thought I'd share them with ya'll. Shout outs to Jean, Jason and Harinder.. thoroughly enjoyed your reviews of her concert here. =) Jean..I was upset to learn they had edited parts of her appearance on Tonight With Gurmit! What were they thinking? Cdn't they have done without Anabelle Francis? At least u got to see the show in its entirety.."live" too! For non-Singaporean edas, the show can be viewed via VDO on the show's website http://www.mediacity.com.sg/twg The clip isn't up yet though...u'll probably have to wait a week or so to check it out. Jewel comes on 15 minutes into the show..so be patient..it'll be worth the wait. ~Peiling~ - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - --------------------------------------- What do you define as real kindness? I was very worried when I started getting popular because I saw how common it is for people to become idolised...I've talked to fans specifically being more thoughtful about the way they approach their heroes and as soon as I've done that, I can't decribe how quickly I've seen fans go, "Oh, yeah, right! What am I doing?" For my birthdays, I used to get presents...and I wrote to them saying, "Y' know, I've so much abundance in my life that I don't even need them, now for my birthday every year , I get about 5000 hours of community service done in my honour and to me that's really fantastic and it makes me feel that I can exist more normally as a person within fame because people are watching me less for right and wrong actions as they are looking more at themselves. That's kindness to me because I don't think kindness is a constant anything, it's a goal you try to upkeep through out. There's a lot of poetry in your music..., where do you get the inspiration from? Next time I get called naive, I'm going to get them to call you! I don't over-identify with my music or my writing--- it's like a car, it gets me where I am but I don't think it's who I am or where I am. I've always been very curious about myself and my environment; the world I live in and writing has helped me organise my thoughts. I don't think it's something like it's something that inspires me; it's more like a by-product that inspires me. When things get complicated, who do you talk to? I meditate and pray and I try to maintain a prayerful attitude throughout the day --- I'm not always successful. I spend abt an hour everyday in silence when I'm on tour; it's something that I didn't have to do when I was growing up in the out-doors when I had much more time. When I get upset, I talk to God and I've been encouraged to have a personal relationship that way but I've never thought about a Man or a Woman God ; I've never thought about what type of God. On her chart-topping song, 'Hands': The idea with the song 'Hands' was to say that there are obviously problems...If you really, really want to change a problem and have an impact on that problem, you have to stay mercifully focused on that problem and be educated on that problem...that's what 'Hands' is all about to me. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Apr 1999 01:10:12 EST From: Harrisbros@aol.com Subject: NJC: Pennsylvania Has a Bumper Crop of EDAs! Two weeks ago, I offered to create an "EDA Registry" to track the location of EDAs who want to get together for gatherings, shows and such. I'm pleased to say that I had 113 EDAs respond so far! Here are the TOP TEN areas by state (and country!)... *drum roll, please* 1) Pennsylvania (13) 2) California (11) Massachusetts (11) 4) New York (10) 5) New Jersey (8) 6) Texas (6) 7) Canada ! (5) 8) Australia ! (4) Florida (4) Illinois (4) So far, there are 99 US and 14 International EDAs participating. Some conclusions from the crack analysts at the Harris Poll (tm): * EDAs tend to come from colder climates, and likely acquire their taste for Jewel after being snowed in listening to Jewel tapes for weeks on end... * Even though roughly the same size geographically, Texas has 15% more EDAs than Canada! * EDAs may be born in Alaska, but none live there anymore ;-) * The battle of the islands at halftime: Hawaiians 2, Rhodes 0 (okay, 1/2 if you count Alice attending school there) * Realistically, New York-New Jersey is one big city, so they could claim the top spot with 18 EDAs, and... * We strongly suspect that we missed three or four EDAs worldwide in this survey! The EDA map graphics can be viewed at the following web site URL (oh, Mike wanted me to mention that URL stands for Universal Resource Locator ;-) ---> www.EveryDayAngels.com/registry.html I'm NOT listing all the participants publically on this site, but will give the contact info to anyone planning an event and needing to know who to contact in their area. That way, while everyone has a general idea of how many active EDAs are in their local area, only the people looking to organize something will get specific information! (That's called a "need to know" basis, guys) If you simply want to be contacted for future gatherings in your area, you can still join the registry by sending me your: Full name Email address Full birthdate City/State/Country I'll add you to the database immediately, and to the map at the next revision (thank heaven for Photoshop layers, huh?) Please note that this project is in addition to Gerrit's regional mailing list effort, and inclusion on one doesn't guarantee inclusion on the other. Once we get more international EDAs to participate, I'll probably work in a non-US map or two as well. You know, my heart's still with underdog Wisconsin... (oh yeah, and IRC is not even considered an internet chat room. it's run through special programs, and connected to seperate servers... kind of like ICQ) most of the people on there are nice people. so, (those of you who are mIRC users ought to get this..) if anybody sees the, let me be politically correct about this *grimace*, idiot who wrote that article- feel free to slap him with a large trout a bit! Then he'll learn just how dangerous IRC really is! ~Chris, the angel who'se just learning to fly http://members.tripod.com/irstwfaa PS: the trout thing is from a command in mIRC, a popular IRC program. it would do this on the screen: (if your name was EDA) ***EDA Slaps Author around a bit with a large trout!!!*** ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 03 Apr 1999 13:17:44 EST From: jennifer s ledray Subject: Here's the last of the Jewel stuff, have any Garbage? But this second album is an unexpected delight. Her voice pure & fresh, the Alaskan singer shines on both accoustic ballads & pop tracks. Her lucid charming songs are embellished by jazzy percussion, jangling electric guitars & swathes of ambient keyboards & synthesiser, making Spirit a more rounded affair than her debut. From the breathless Kiss the Flame & the euphoric Jupiter to the witty Do You, Jewels outlook is spiced with an idealistic streak & sense of wonder bordering on the spiritual. Prevented from becoming too pretentious by her endearing simplicity, Jewel occasionaly recalls fellow americans Tori Amos (on Hands) & Tracy Chapman (on Life Uncommon). But her greatest gift is her originality- Spirit is unique. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Apr 1999 09:36:57 +1000 From: "Jewel Dean" Subject: Midi's for Spirit! I think that "Down So Long" hasn't gotten played enough and for such a great song it deserves to be played and to be well known as a "Jewel song" Hi everyone, I have to to agree with Rachel. DSL is a great song and definately deserves more rotation on MTV. I myself have signed on and voted several times in hopes to get DSL on the Total Request Live's countdown. It seems, at least to me, once a video does well on TRL, MTV is more inclined to include that video in their very limited selection of other highly rotated videos. What we need to do is get organized -- choose a day to focus our efforts and get DSL to debut on the countdown. Perhaps Wednesday the 7th -- just to ensure everyone has had a chance to read all their email. So mark it on your calenders -- Wednesday April 7th go to www.mtv.com and vote!!! ------------------------------ Date: 3 Apr 99 18:05:30 MST From: Greg White Subject: DSL/Vid Caps and stuff Hi all! I just got my import of Down So Long today. I really, REALLY like the Live version of Amen. It's stunning. She does screw up some notes I think though! :) The Fat Boy song is OK. I was kinda dissapointed though because basically it's just the version of of spirit there is hardly any difference. And the cover artwork is a really beautiful picture of her that I haven't seen befor. One Question: DSL seems to really be taking its time. Has it totally been "Officially" released yet. Cause I haven't heard it on the radio at all. And I only see he video for it on the MMM countdown, on which it is about half way up! I'm sure it will get to #1 And also, I was wondering if anyone could help me aquire some pictures of hands and DSL videos. Like, tell me if your webpage has them or something. I'd really appreciate it. Thanks all! Greg ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Apr 1999 21:10:35 -0600 From: Ronnie J Stratton Subject: DSL Hey! Subject: njc: AUSTINites are llama-friendly "WHY I BELIEVE IN THE DIVINE LLAMA" ok. well, dennis harris made me crawl out of my hole and actually communicate with some edas living in austin. and i am so glad i did because we had a BLAST. this is what happened. first, on friday i got out of work mysteriously early and went to pick up TESSA (the littlest harris, remember guys?) and AMIAS from their places and we went to this quaint italian restaurant called the brick oven for dinner. at first we were kinda weird about talking about anything but jewel, but then *boom* out of nowhere we were talking about our majors and our friends and our families and our pasttimes etc. it was so much fun. then after dinner we weren't ready to go home and AMIAS decided to skip his previous movie appointment because we were SOOOO cool---so we went back to my place and watched jewel videos....big surprise, ehh? we also had jewel-sing-along on the guitar. it was sooo cool to watch jewel with people that, for instance, know all of jewel's brother's names. my roommate came home and was kinda freaked out because we were all sitting in a circle around the telly like we were in some kind of psychological group, talking about the ups and down of our addiction!!! we had to rewind the part of hard rock live where atz says "that's my baby-girl jewel" over and over and die in hysterics each time. then we decided that on saturday we would go to fredericksburg. for those of you unfamiliar with texas area, fredericksburg is a cute german town with antique shops, museums, sausage places, candelshops, etc. so i went to pick em up and today we headed to the town. we were so excited. the texas hill country is so beautiful and we made it to fredericksburg and started exploring. TESSA and i wanted ice cream the whole way there and finally we found some yummy peaches and cream. AMIAS got some chocomocha or something rich and creamy and for those of you that don't know me, i am completely obsessed with grapes and vineyards and there were grape things all over the place! and then we were in search of german sausage and saurkraut and TESSA and i got these HUGE sausages and munched away. it was so funny cuz TESSA is so little and this sausage was about 1/2 as big as she is! and this wooden giraffe was actually taller that she was. (the first exotic animal) poor AMIAS, we wouldn't shut up long enough for him to get a word in edgewise. but we showed him pics of dennis harris and he was happy! and we were walking down the street and there were all these nicely dressed yuppies walking by and we were just singing out "YO THIS YODELIN' SONG'S FOR YOU....." so we decided to head back to austin and take a different way because i wanted to go through luckenbach, texas. plus we just wanted a back road for the great scenery. so after passing "south grape creek" and "grapevine road", suddenly TESSA yells out "LLAMA!! LLAMA!!!!!! i stopped the car, unbelievably. sure enough, behind a big "llamas for sale" sign were 2 fluffy llamas, staring at us as if we were from another planet. we were freakin' out, taking pics and saying "jesus christ almighty" in jewel's irish accent. (for those of you unfamiliar with the LLAMA phenomena, write to dennis or amy) i think we were convinced that this was the final sign that we are supposed to hold a *big ass* event this summer when jewel comes down here. and all of you are invited. we will keep you posted. so we drive on. guess what we come upon about 20 miles down the road. A WHOLE FIELD OF LLAMAS!!!!! hmmmmmmm. so we are gasping at the baby llamas and the owner drives up. oops. i had to explain the whole llama thing and i did it *very* badly. but she told us about shearing llamas and selling the females for breeding and that they all have their own personalitites and you watch them grow up. it was pretty informative. later we saw an ostrich and i resisted the temptation to stop and gauk. we stopped by the river in blanco and TESSA over came her fear of heights and walked barefoot with me and AMIAS across the damn. we picked some texas lotus and put them in our hair. back to austin. we went to this really groovy cafe/juice bar called mozart's. big enough to hold lots of edas, hint hint! it was great. of course we talked about angelfood, jewel's recent reviews, etc. but by that time we were friends and we ended up forgetting about jewel. this seems to be a common phenomenon. MEET EACH OTHER. do it. no excuses. there are jewel fans everywhere now. and most of them are really great hedonists like yourself. we will keep you posted about the upcoming *big ass* event. until then, keep your eyes peeled for the divine llama!
