Unless I do get a response in the next day or two from him or somebody else in or near Orange County is willing to sport their home for a day, I'll be finding other things to do for Spring Break. I was listening to Louisa and Her Blue Guitar on an angelfood tape, and Jewel mentioned that it was inspired by the image of a blue guitar- which was mentioned in a poem by Pablo Neruda. But, she didn't say which poem it was. So, does anyone know what the poem is called and if Pablo has a book?? Thanks.=) - -Erin The Fire Angel P.S.- If any EDAs(or non-EDAs) have poems, artwork, or songs that you'd like to share, please send them to me so I can put them up on the EDA Poetry/Art page. After reading Rachel's post about 'Hands', I completely agree that it is a beautiful and inspirational song. I loved it when I first heard it and it's certainly a source of encouragement to me. In fact, I think Spirit is an inspirational masterpiece in itself; almost every song on the album, such as 'Hands', 'Deep Water' and *especially* 'Life Uncommon' is an uplifting piece of work. The line "no longer lend your strength to that which you wish to be free from" is particularly beautiful. On another note, does anyone know why Jewel refers to lightning and rooms together in some of her songs? e.g "four empty rooms... three wait for lightning one waits for you" in 'Enter from the East' and similar to the reference in 'Absence of Fear'? Just a thought... Take care, Marissa "But I will sing you lullabies and wake you in the morning..." -Fantine, "Les Miserables" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Mar 1999 23:30:40 +1200 From: Tse Subject: "I stab the yolks with my goddamn fork" Hi all, Well, this is over a week late, but here i go anyway... On Saturday the 20th of March I got to see Jewel perform live for the very first time. I was hyped up all day, on the look out for Jewel around town (during the concert she said she'd gone out and bought some CD's but I didn't see her :-( ) Anyway, Steve was brilliant. My cousin and I cheered very loudly for him, no-one else really gave a rat's arse about him. He's a very charming person. I just loved his song about chairs. Hee hee...Hios Star Wars song had everyone laughing and he made us do Chewbacca noises during the chorus. Jewel came on half an hour after Steve had left the stage. The set list went something like this: (I can't remember the exact order, but anyway...) Near You Always Deep Water What's Simple Is True Hands You were Meant For Me Jupiter I Thought I Saw You Last Night (Steve & Jewel duet) Morning Song (solo) Cold Song (solo) Innocence Maintained (solo) [A song I didn't know - the first line was "I hate You, I love you"] (solo) Down So Long Barcelona A Life Uncommon Foolish Games Down Love Me Just Leave Me Alone (I think) Who Will Save Your Soul Encore: Absence of Fear This Little Bird (Nedra) Angel Standing By The whole concert was mind blowing. Jewel was very chatty and friendly. Before YWMFM, (no Mexico/whale watching story) she explained how she and Steve had met, and then the two began arguing over who had written which line in YWMFM. I loved it when Steve said he prefered to sing "I stab the yolks with my goddamn fork" instead of "I break the yolks and make a smiley face" because it's more 'manly'. When they finally started the song, Jewel substituted Steve's line into the song but screwed up ("I stab the forks with my goddamn...no, wait..."). Then she forgot a few of the lyrics and got us all to sing along, but those who did didn't sound very enthusiastic ("Aw come on - you suck!"). After the song she said "You sing to his Star Wars song, but not YWMFM" and then she did her own Chewy impression which had the everybody laughing. The rest of the concert went by smoothly, her little solo set was cool, especially 'Morning Song'. She made everyone get up before 'Down' (which rocked btw) and from then on everybody was standing, which was much better. Who Will Save Your Soul rocked too, and this time the crowd singing was much better Of course, I had to wait right 'till the end for the song I had hoped she would sing - and it was so gorgeous. We didn't get to meet her afterwards, which was a shame, but I went home with my very own journal. :-) Now I just have to wait a few more years to relive the experience... I love every song on it and hope to some day soon go to see Jewel perform live. Which brings me to my question, does anyone know if Jewel will be coming anywhere near philladelphia, pennsylvania? I find this tape very strange because it's alot like the set list Jewel is doing on her Spirit tour, yet this tape is fairly old. It starts with Near You Always, and then at the end of the tape is all the rock songs like Down So Long, the scat version of WWSYS, Love me Just Leave me Alone, Down, Dancing Barefoot (very rockish!) and then the last song is Morning Song. Kinda weird huh?
