[NeOblCar@aol.com] Re: Other band member's on the Jewel Tour. [Phil Subject: Why no singles in U.S.?? & Jewel site comments Twas brillig, I guess I have no reason to be upset because I'll pursue to my death every single single (no sic there) released in every single country, BUT WHY 'on earth' doesn't Atlantic choose to release any new Jewel singles here in the U.S.??? An answer if you please... We'd all buy them simply for the new cover art. You know we would! Sheesh, I mean hundreds of pics must be taken in photo sessions with Jewel, and yet so very few ever come to light. Why can't I spend any money supporting my favorite artist, Jewel, in the U.S.? What am I supposed to do, buy myself 30 copies of Spirit? Give us something new, please... Most folks know by now that "B sides" (extraneous songs that one might not ever hear otherwise) deepen a fan bases' appreciation of an artist. Jewel is prolific. She's prolific. And once more for emphasis, Jewel is prolific. An extra song or two, however different from an artist's normal style, is not gonna turn a populace away. Is Jewel's label so afraid that every song she's ever written is going to end up on an album someday that they are too faint of heart to risk "losing a song" by releasing something new or different on a Jewel CD single? I mean let's have Jewel's version (just messin' around one afternoon in a studio) of Willie Nelson's "Angel Flyin' Too Close to the Ground" or a hard-core blues song or something fun like "Cold Song" but something that is new!!!!!! I'm as happy as Gywenth Paltrow winning tonight's Oscar (well not that emotional, but equally happy) that we finally have "Spirit" to daily savor and enjoy, but I'm just sick of walking into Best Buys' and CD stores everywhere and never seeing anything but "Pieces of You" and "Spirit" for purchase. (Sure I display them more prominently every chance I get, gives me a strange kick!) Oh and BTW: Why doesn't the official Jewel web site have someway to write to the webmaster? I don't want to recommend logistical webpage suggestions to Jewel herself (realizing of course that she hasn't the time to ever likely personally read the email generated on the site)... Let us write to the webmasters, not just to Jewel. One official Jewel page contention I have is that although I understand that the photos that are available for viewing on the site are copywritten, why can't I be allowed for my personal use to at least print them out. My personality (and drug treatments seek to cure this for me), but my personality is such that I'm more upset by seeing a great photo of Jewel laying happily on her horse and never being able to somehow obtain that image, realizing that at any cyberspace moment the decision could be made to remove it from the website forever, than not seeing this photo... Man, that hurts... Offer 8x10s in the Jewel store or something, but don't just show us photos that we can't even print out on our little home color printers. It's a tease I can hardly bear!!! (Did I take my medication tonight or not, I've lived a stressed existence and need my prescribed help). I realize this is an impossible to fulfill request, and apologize for sounding ungrateful but I hope my point is well taken. And let me see the photos full size. I've got a work provided 21" Viewsonic monitor in my home office here and I still can't really make out much detail... Anyway talk to you later EDAs! Only my 5th or 6th post in nearly 3 yrs, but I read every digest faithfully! Pls view this all not as negativity, but as one living life as bravely as possible. Can we not ask for that which we strongly desire?!? - -Tim C. >Sent: Sun, 21 Mar 1999 21:27:56 EST >From: ABershaw@aol.com >Subject: Re: DSL single question > >In a message dated 3/21/99 8:53:46 PM, STAC5984@aol.com writes: > >So does anyone know, has the <"Down So Long" CD single> been released? will it >be released in the US?>> > >There is not a scheduled "DSL" single release for the United States. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Mar 1999 22:41:08 +1200 From: Nicholas Wong Subject: Other band member's on the Jewel Tour. okay after the concert in wellignton i got to talk with most of the band members as they walked back to the hotel. Jewel got the car treatment. There was steve poltz, who played the guitar of course, and another steve day i think, who plays the keyboard. Doug Pettibony who plays the guitar, was really good with the scat compo with Jewel and he played the harp thingy. Tony Hall Peale, who was the bass player but i though he was the drummer so i got him to sign the drumstick...lol but i didn't get to meet the drummer. I got photos with steve and the rest of the band but not of Jewel. I am in a sort of Jewel withdrawal state. She really touched me. Touched by an angel really takes on a new meaning after her concert. I just feel depressed because i was never so happy in my life to see and hear Jewel's talent. She is very talented. I was in touching distance of her. Sitting in the front row and i was THAT close. I don't think anything can ever top that. Words can not explain the feeling watching Jewel hit the high notes and sing her heart out. All i can say is if you are going to her concert, you are going to love it. If you are having second thoughts don't! I wonder how the christchurch concert is going. This may go way back, but this talk of her latest band got me wondering about it. Old trivia if you like ... We all have heard how Jewel's relationship with Flea got started, but how ever did a girl playing in local coffeeshops meet up with Charlotte Caffey (the ex- Go-Go's guitar/piano/talent) ??? Especially to garn help on arrangements and such. Also, and more importantly ... was there ever a live recording made with Jewel and Charlotte (on piano) ... especially Foolish Games. [Besides POY, doh!] Just wondering ... -- Rob ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Mar 1999 22:27:23 +1100 From: Phil Subject: Re: Other band member's on the Jewel Tour. The item you reffered to as a "harp thingy" is actually called a Pedal Steel Guitar, and was used in Barcelona amongst others. I sent this to the list just to make sure that other people know what the "harp thingy is". While I do not want to copy and paste his thoughts here I'll just address my thoughts...... First of all, yes, please more U.S. Singles... I constantly scour my local music shops looking... Recently I did find one of the 'Hands" singles, but it was in the special order section, so apparently someone one had ordered it, but never picked it up..... So, I guess that does not count... I mean look it at like this.. of my five or six cds (it would be more, but I've not had the money to get 'Hands" yet) only two were readily available in the US... ( I mean, last single I bought I had to brave the native head-hunters of Jabu Jabu.... The only way I escaped was to lull them to peace with Jewel's sweet voice!!!) Now about B sides... I enjoy live versions of songs that have already been released..... But I do not think it would hurt to put unreleased songs for B sides..... I mean, we all know she has a couple of songs to spare...(Jewel has written more songs than most of us put together!!!)... I do not want to tell Jewel and her team how to do their job, but why not use some of these obscure songs for B sides... It can only draw more people in (I think anyway).. In fact here is Rowdius' meager thoughts for B sides (Alan, please take note =Þ ) These are just my thoughts, and there are too many anyway..but here are a few.. Varg and Delfin (I think I spelled it right..) I Don't Care Tiny Love Spaces (and since Steve is around.. how about B side duets with him..) Old Lover's house etc.... Now I realize that one reason these songs might not make the cut is that because that they are fairly dated..... but hey, why not dust them off and recycle?..... Anyway, that is about all of the Jewel content... BTW..(I know this is a lost cause) Does anyone want to part with STL?(of course I want original....) please email me.... take care Rowdius Beware of the Purple Peanut butter!!! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Mar 1999 02:11:35 +1200 From: "Kim Lees" Subject: Pre-Concert Stuff: I Met Jewel, Nedra & Steve... AGAIN!!! Hi Angels!!! well, I've just got back from the Christchurch concert, which I'll talk about in a separate post, but anyway... I took the day off work today so I could dedicate it to more "Jewel-watching" and here are the highlights (and lowlights) of my day... firstly a couple of downers... the day starts with me waking up to hear that someone else won the "meet Jewel backstage" thing, someone who doesn't even sound like much of a Jewel fan anyway... :-( next I drive to the radio station that has been advertising for the past week or two that they'll be interviewing Jewel "in the studio" in the hopes of being able to meet her there, but it turns out she rang the station saying she was too tired to come in or something so they just interview her over the phone instead... :-( ...it gets better, trust me!!! :-) OK, so I get to the Town Hall in the hopes of meeting her at the soundcheck... there's just me and these two other guys waiting... it's about 12:30pm and I've been waiting for 2 hours when Steve and his "blonde hanger-on" walk past so I grab my camera... "Hey Steve, can I get a photo???" so he and the blonde chick pose for the absolute p-e-r-f-e-c-t photo and what happens??? my camera won't work cos the batteries are flat!!! aaarrrggghhhh!!! so anyway, after they walk off the two guys who are waiting with me ask me who he was so I practically have to explain the whole San Diego scene and the history of EDA's to them... :-) then after I run to my car to get new batteries it's back to endlessly waiting around... a couple more hours pass, one of the guys I was waiting with has given up, and Steve and his chick appear again... this time he's holding an acoustic guitar which I presume he must've bought while they were walking through town... so they pose for photos again and I get some really good ones, mainly with Steve pulling faces though... I think at one point he calls me "the camera guy" or something... *LOL* about 10 more minutes pass and Jewel, Nedra and a few band members come out of the hotel they're staying at (which is literally next-door to the Town Hall) and are just casually talking out front so I go up to them and get a few more photos... Jewel something to the effect of "Oh Hi, how are you??? I really loved the book you gave me, thank you... hey, didn't you have some stuff you wanted signed???" so she signs my ANWA, "Spirit" & both my versions of POY... she even put a little heart when she signed the book which was kinda cool!!! Nedra thanks me again for doing the lyric book for Jewel and mentions that Jewel can't even remember half the songs in it!!! *LOL* by now the other guy waiting with me has kinda summoned up the courage to get his concert ticket signed by Jewel... I think he was kinda freaked that Jewel knew me!!! so all the while, I'm getting all these fantastic photos of Jewel, Nedra, the bass player and whoever else was there... (by the way, I'm sure Jewel's got something going with that bass-player - they seemed really close and were holding hands at every opportunity they got...) once the soundcheck is underway I go into the Town Hall foyer where you can hear it all happening... I really recommend listening to one of Jewel's soundchecks!!! so much improvisation it was incredible... "Hands" was practically a completely different song as she changed all the words and made up new melodies and stuff for it... in one bit she's singing "oh shit, oh shit, oh shit..." just making stuff up on the spot... I also heard her rehearsing DSL, "Life Uncommon" and a song I've never heard before that she was working on for about 10 mins... it's probably a brand new song she hasn't played live yet... so anyway, I manage to tape about 20 mins worth of all this before a security guy realises what I am doing and confiscates the tape... I start arguing with him but soon realise he's not gonna back down so I go home and get ready for the concert, which I'll talk about in my next post... I'm sure I was the only person singing along!!! if the audience had been a bit more enthusiastic we might've gotten another encore, we might've gotten "Chime Bells"!!! so anyway, all the band stuff really rocked out... she did a bit of a scat in "Down So Long" and it just *totally* ruled over the one on the album... even "Hands" sounded pretty good live!!! when I first heard "Spirit" I had my reservations about her "new sound" but when she plays them live they sound fantastic!!! none of that bland commercial-radio kinda sound the album has... for the acoustic stuff, I'm sure she did heaps more wrong chord changes and stuff than you hear in most angelfood... you can kinda see why she does more band stuff now, cos she really does "clumsily strum" her guitar!!! :-) "Innocence Maintained" sounded kinda weird cos it was the "Spirit" version done acoustically, so here I am trying to sing along like the JewelStock version but she does all the "houses for hatred" bits down low like on the album so it's a mixture of both versions... the mexico drug-bust story thing for YWMFM has really grown from what she used to tell... now it seems to go on for about 2-3 minutes, with lots more detail about the trip added in and Steve saying some stuff too... anyway, before "Down" she gets everyone to come up to the front of the stage so everyone really gets into "Down" & "Love Me Just Leave Me Alone" although I seemed to be the only one who actually knew the words!!! the evening ends with Nedra coming on stage to sing "This Little Bird" on her own while Jewel kinda hid in the shadows then said goodnight afterwards, they left the stage and that was it... no more encores, no autographs, no nothing...
