Pease" Subject: NJC: My my my... what a little tempest we've got here. Hi everyone, I've been biting my tongue during this whole "the list sucks, the list doesn't suck, I hate vets, I hate newbies, I love vets, I love newbies" thing. But, I'm going to throw in my comment here, because I've been noticing a disturbing trend. First, my "qualifications" - I've been on this list for about 2 and a half years... but, in most respects, I'd consider myself a "newbie" - I don't take part in many of the discussions, and I've been to only one EDAF gathering... I'm not the most involved list member - most of my time on it has been in a strictly "lurking" capacity. Now... my question is this: Can somebody answer me these questions, please! Who are the "VETS" who are disrespecting newbies? Who are the "newbies" who are disrespecting vets? I saw one post accusing "vets" of being rude to newbies... and then I've seen tons of people jumping on the bandwagon saying that the "vets" are being rude, and they're acting like asses, and they just suck in general. But I've honestly yet to see a "vet" say anything bad about "newbies" - what it seems to me is, everybody's getting all excited over a hint of a hint of a rumor that somebody on the list knows somebody who heard that once "some guy" said something bad about "newbies." My advice: all y'all (vets, newbies, and anybody else who doesn't fit in those categories) should drop the "us vs. them attitude," it's not very becoming -- it's just plain stupid. I'm seeing people getting upset over insults that never happened here, and it's ludicrous. Now, about the list - does it suck? Eh... sometimes. Did it used to be more interesting, in my opinion? Eh... sometimes. I think that on this list, a lot of the same topics get beat to death over and over again... which is cool with me, if you all want to talk about it, then talk - I have a delete key if I'm not interested in what you have to say. (Something you all might want to learn to use... saves time, rather than writing email to the list complaining about how much email you have to delete... :) I think moderation *has* taken away some of the "personal feel" of the list... but that is in no way a condemnation of Mike C., and the mind-numbing amount of hours he has spent moderating the list... moderation *is* a sort of necessary evil on a list of this size, and if we're going to have the occasional "perks" that come from being in reasonably close contact with jewel & her management. However, I would say that moderation should be the exception, rather than the rule - if the post is absolutely wrong (illegal/immoral/unethical), then great, moderate the hell out of it... but other than that, let it go through. It's a high volume mailing list? Oh well... we'll learn to control ourselves after the novelty of having those reins loosened wears off. I don't think it's very helpful for the list to "force" a particular shape & size on it, and I can't imagine Mike really likes having to deal with all the emails complaining, "Why didn't my post go through???" I really don't think moderation is Mike's 'raison d'etre,' and I bet he'd love to spend less time doing it... if we can control ourselves (if you've seen it posted 30 times, you don't really *need* to post a message saying "me too!" to the list... ), and just relax a bit, we'd probably all be much less likely to head for the nearest clock tower with a high powered rifle. (mmm... interlocking fields of fire...) That's it, my 7 cents. Hate me if you must, yell at me if you want, but please don't expect me to lose sleep over it. :) Kevin - ---------- Kevin Pease kbpease@boston.crosswinds.net ICQ UIN: 3106063 AOL IM: kbpease http://www.crosswinds.net/boston/~kbpease/ "I know it's been quite a long time since I / Sang a hymn without guilt in my eyes / But I believe he truly wouldn't care 'cause if you / Really tried he'd save a place for you there..." ---(Sarah Slean, "John XXIII")--- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Mar 1999 00:06:22 -0700 From: Rhino Subject: NJC: not getting into this, nope nope nope Hi peeps, I'm not getting into this hairy discussion. Steve Poltz is the man. i ain't ever seen the guy before, ain't ever heard his music, or the rugburns but i can tell you he has made a lasting impression on me. he seems like he has been around for a bit but he was still very unassuming, unpretentious, the consumate musician and has only too much time for his fans. he made a point of thanking everyone for buying his CD obliging all with autographs, a chat and a photo even a drink if you were lucky enough to be out with them. he is coming back to australia in a few weeks but will unfortunately bypass brisbane, where he undoubtedly made numerous friends and fans. it would be fantastic to have him back for a full show, he even agreed with me that he should do a living room tour again. it was only too refreshing to see a great performer sparing the time for his fans and it seems the trappings of the spirit tour will never dull his enthusiasm for the people shedding their hard earned to see him. Okay, enough talk for me, I wanna DO something! Time to make tomorrow's good old days... Opportunities gear up starting next month, and continue throughout the summer and fall (ie, Bearsville, Jewel US Tour, EDAF events and whatever Living Room Tour Alan arranges for this summer -- I expect to see lots of you at the annual "back-to-back shows" Alan and I host in the Cape Cod area!) But to facilitate getting the most EDAs together as possible, we need to know where the heck everyone is! This idea is something I've thought of a couple of times, but repeatedly placed on the back burner (nothing unusual there, just ask Mike!) Anyway, I think it would be VERY VALUABLE to database the general location (city/state), name, birthday and email addy of any EDAs who want to be contacted with notice of any local EDA gatherings or EDAF event. This is 100% VOLUNTARY, so don't participate if you don't want to (or have a problem with the idea). In fact, if you have a problem with the idea, pretend I never brought it up, okay? ;-) But, if you do want to be included, email me directly at HarrisBros@aol.com and I'll compile the information. Even if you think I know who you are and where you're at, send me the information anyway! One warning: you will get some SPAM, SPAM, SPAM to join us for EveryDay Angels Foundation events -- so consider yourself fairly warned! Friends may not let friends rope plywood cows, but they DO let friends in on the good stuff. Here's a music tip for folks new to the list: look at the FAQ, find out how to contact the AngelFood Bank, and then arrange to get the tape "Jewel Rocks the Paradise" -- it absolutely kicks plywood cow butt! I dug my copy out this week and there is no other Jewel performance like it in the world, and I guarantee new fans will find unfamiliar (and new favorite) songs on it! LOOK what you started!!!!!!!! Nah, don't blame Alan or anyone on this one :-) (I also realize Ryan may have been joking a bit :-) It was a long time coming......moderation was and IS quite necessary for many reasons, but the reins of control DID need to be loosened a bit, and as a result of this they shall be....to what degree no one knows as of yet, as there's MANY variables to look at and many opinions to read. This will take time. As a result though, the reins are presently VERY loose partially to "see what happens", and to give everyone a taste of what could be. So get off you high >horses and stop implying that you are better fans and >all around superior to others, because the simple >fact is that YOU AREN'T!!!!!! I'm not meaning to discuss any one person in particular in this post, I included this e-mail simply because it brings up (in a global manner) the subject that I am trying to explain. No "vet" has ever claimed to be a better, truer fan of Jewel than of any "newbie." This difference between the sides has nothing to do with fan-dom. "Vets" are claiming however that they have a better understanding of the purpose of this list. Naturally this is so, they have been here longer and helped build the thing. They have seen what it was meant to be from the beginning and they are trying to explain what that is to those who don't yet understand because they haven't seen or experienced it. That's why gatherings are important, they are a first hand experience that leads to a deeper understanding. The problem is that the reason many people don't understand is that the "vets" are viewing the world in a different manner than the "newbies" and also trying to explain how they see it differently without using the "newbie" thought habits. The problem is that the only way to understand the purpose of this list is in a global manner, which happens to be the manner that the "vets" are trying to help "newbies" to understand. You need to understand what they're teaching in order that "newbies" may learn to truly understand their comments, posts, actions and methods for doing so. I am trying to bridge this paradigm gap right now. I haven't told anyone, at least during the recent past(meaning: at least for this debate), whether I am a newbie or a vet. There is a reason for that. It never occured to me to mention it. You see, I think that in trying to bridge the gap that I am demonstrating that I understand it so that I don't have to rely as heavily on faith to support me. When I bring the idea of faith into it, what I mean is that when a "vet" calls themself a "vet" what they are trying to do is explain to "newbies" in a way that the "vets" fell is credible in the minds of the "newbies" that they do have a good understanding of the purpose of this list and that they ought to be listened to when they try to explain it. Unfortunately, many non-global thinkers will look at the language of a post, that is, the analytical, surface vernacular of the words that are written rather than what the "vet" means by saying those words. They want to generate enough faith in a "newbie" (by noting that they are a vet among other methods) so that the "newbie" will give the "vet's" idea enough of a chance and consideration so that the "newbie" is able to really understand what the "vet" is trying to teach. When I say "vet" and when I say "newbie," (in order to attempt to clear any confusion) I don't mean each and every "vet" and "newbie," instead I mean the general concensus of each category. I think that it may even be said that when I say "vet" that I mean global thinker that understands the purpose and when I say "newbie" I mean an analytical (non-gobal) thinker who of course can't understand the purpose of this list simply because they have never experienced anything of this type or with this type of purpose before. Many "newbies" are blocked by the fact that they are unwilling to have true faith in the basic goodness of their fellow man. They assume that everyone is simply out for their own good and thereby attacking them. Where do you think the suspisions against some of the great people on this list (i.e. Mike, Alan, The Harris Brothers... too many to list) come from. These people are great people with a great understanding of the world. Of course many people are skeptical of this because they have not had the personal experience with these individuals to show the truth of that and the integrity that they embody, and all of the pesonal experience that they may have had, because they have seen it through the analytical philosophical view, they have misinterpreted. Like we were privy to just recently, Alan showed us an entirely different side of him that many of us have never seen. The reason why is that he has to serve a certain purpose on this list and that, because he is not a simple member of this list, takes precedence over his showing us the side of him that is worth all the faith that it deserves (a great amount, though little is given). However, for all this talk about faith, nobody here is asking for blind faith, "vets" are asking that "newbies" simply attempt to gain a deeper and full understanding of the list's purpose so that they may then decide for themselves if it is something that they want to choose to be a part of and follow for themselves. Sometimes that takes disbelieving what a person has entrenched their thinking into and that is scary. Which happens to be another of the barriers that deter people from the very understanding that "vets" are trying to teach them to understand: an entirely new (and I think improved [because I fully understand it and all that it means]) method of thinking. That's the challenge, what will be your response? Erik The Idealistic Angel ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #144 ***************************
