I haven't been a member long, but in the time that I have been here I have enjoyed it to it's fullest. I hate it when we all fight about stupid subjects that aren't worth fighting over. I just have on thing to say about this, I know that we are all here because we all love Jewel. This list gives us the oppertunity to find out things that other people wouldn't find out until much later. Just as someone has said "this list gives us an oppertunity to see Jewel more laid back" If we are all here for the same purpose than why are we fighting all of the time. You people that allways do this (and it is normally the same people) should just be lucky that someone cared enough about Jewels fans to make a list for us. And while I am on the subject, I haven't been on this list long. A friend of mine introduced it to me, and I was greatful. But since I have been on I have heard nothing but fighting and complaining. I know I don't write much and put in my two sense, but it is better not to write at all than to cause contraversy. So for those of you who do put in your two sensee, please don't take this offensive, but this is MY two sense. I know that I allways will be a Jewel fan. No matter how bad her records are in the futer, or her other tallents, I know she will allways be my favorite. But I just don't understand people whose main itle they do nothing to but critisize and complain about. I know that she will allways life up to my expectations and so will this list. This is how I feel. I didn't write this letter to piss people off, I wrote it to tell you how I felt. You can take what you want out of it and you can just toss it away as offensive, I really don't care. But please don't take it the wrong way. Your prospecting angel Shane-------The Veggie Angel ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Mar 1999 18:59:28 -0800 From: FadeAway Subject: Future of the list EDAs I've been reading all the "future of the list" posts since the debate started. After reading and hearing everyone else's opinion I am ready to post about this. I've liked Jewel since early 1996. The first time I heard WWSYS I was struck by the poignant message, who is going to save your soul? In the song I took it as I was the only one who could make the difference in my life. I could save my own soul. I joined the list in April of 1997, after seeing Jewel and the Rugburns, and loved it. Even though I didn't post much I really depended on reading all the messages not only because of the Jewel content but to learn about others. It's hard believing and liking things that no one you know really shares. I am in High School in a small town limiting diversity. I've learned a lot by living and this town and being the optimist and open-minded. I've seen a lot of negativity and prejudice. I hate for the list to become like high school. The popular people (vets) against the unpopular (newbies). I know we are so much better than that. Jewel always said that people criticize her for being such an optimist. They don't understand why she has so much faith and hope. I feel the same way. I don't understand why people can't stop fighting and start making a difference. With the location/age survey we know how many people are in each of our states. I'd be happy to start collecting names of Washington EDA's and setting stuff or at least getting to know one another through emails. Let's be part of the solution instead of the problem. Victoria ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Mar 1999 21:44:39 EST From: nyky d Subject: SJC:about the list.... I am sure some of you know that I am here...from my post on hate crimes. But, i wanted to put in MY 2 cents about the whole "moderated list" thing. I used to be a member on here a while back. I was under a completely different email and name, because i changed my name...but, i still remember what it was like. It was so amazing...just like everyone has said, there was talk on ALL topics, not just on Jewel, per say. It gave us Jewel fans a chance to converse on all topics and to realize there were other people out there. We spoke of true friendships, hardships, and everything. One fact has been established~we all love Jewel. Her book of poetry basically became my Bible for quite some time. All these people upset with the newbies, i can see it....in a way. I am a newbie, AGAIN. I once was in the click, slightly. That was WAY back in the day....well, seems like. But, the point is, if we all love Jewel, we owe it to her to be peaceful and to accept people. When certain types of people piss you off, pop in the POY album and listen to the SONG POY. It will remind you... she doesn't like the hostility....why should we egg it on? I agree that once Jewel's time is up, sadly it will happen as it does with everyone eventually, we WILL get back to our core group of TRUE HARDCORE FANS. But, I think we owe it to her and to ourselves to think and go about this in the right way~peaceful. Sorry to be YET ANOTHER ONE WHO PUTS IN THEIR TWO CENTS, BUT WE ALL DESERVE TO BE ABLE TO. Thanks.... A few shows & additional venue information will still be added so have a look periodically for accurate current updates (at www.jeweljk.com). We'll soon have some reviews (by EDAs) & accurate complete setlists on the site for those interested in these things. As the tour progresses, please keep posting reviews for everyone to enjoy here & I'll try to include the most interesting ones on Jewel's site (with the writer's permission). Also a word of advice on interesting show review posts--- describe why you liked or didn't like particular things. Don't just write "She rocked!"...... A few people have sent me reviews that need to be expanded on a bit. Basically, if your review could fit on a bumper sticker, it could use a bit more work, hehehe.... ;-) Also, I know some AOL people with 15" monitors at certain resolution settings are having trouble seeing the "black link area" under Nedra's Letter on the HGH page of the site. (There's a lot more Higher Ground information from these links.) Increasing your monitor resolution helps. If you can't increase your monitor resolution, here's a suggestion that usually works. Drag the window up on your screen so you can expand the lower portion of the window. You can also unanchor the tool bar (in preferences) to allow you to move the window up. Doing this should reveal the HGH link area that you're looking for. Watch fellow EDA Barry on Jeopardy today (Wednesday) & tommorrow (Thursday). He tells me The EDAs pop up in the pre-game conversation. Check local North American listings for times in your area. I wouldn't exactly wish to be in charge of this.. (I'll leave it up to the more older and wiser, and responsible EDAs, after all, I AM only thirteen) But, I just thought how cool it would be since some of us younger EDAs can't go from coast to coast (due to parents and school and what not) maybe a bunch of EDAs from major cities in the world (i.e. from San Francisco, Atlanta, Paris, Stockholm, NYC, etc.) could organize a little local EDA gathering somewhere in their local (major) city (in their state, or country, or whatever) and local EDAs could attend the gathering. (and for the over-achieving Angels, they could try to go to all of em.. ha.. you'd have to have a considerable amount of money to do so, but you never know) It's just an idea, but I thought maybe some other members of the list might be interested in this. I personally think if it ends up being anything like JewelStock (from what I've heard) it will be all kinds of fun for everyone! - --Jessica, the mischevious, tomboyish, in love angel that likes to "clumsly strum" her guitar :) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Mar 1999 09:33:28 -0500 (EST) From: "Matt Adler" Subject: Hey Detroit EDA's-DSL on Radio---How many versions of the DSL single are there? DSL was played on 95.5 FM!!! I didn't realize it at first, as I was looking for a good station, and then I went back to it, after a couple of nano-seconds. I was so excited! I just wanted to let you all know that they have it and have played it, so request away, so it can become more popular in our area and they will play it more often. Long story short: so we can hear it more! (also, so it increases album sales and makes Atlantic even more desperate for more Jewel albums) 95.5's request # is (313)298-9595. Also, if any of you know if any of the other stations have played it, please tell me. I'd like to explain myself a bit more clearly, since these last few days have given me a bit more insight as to what's going on... It's exactly this feeling of defensiveness that's been bothering me about the list lately. A few well-intentioned comments from well-intentioned people have ballooned into a stream of "defending the newbie/vet" posts. What I've missed hasn't been the concerts I couldn't go to all along, or the EDA gatherings I wasn't able to be a direct part of, it's the fearlessness! We've all (myself included) been so busy trying to defend ourselves we've failed to realize we're not really being attacked. There's nothing, overall, wrong with the traffic that's been getting through, or the nature or intentions of the list members. What so many of us need to remember, however, is, when we're discussing hot topics, that not every word need be interpreted as mean, condescending, or whatever. There's an old saying, "never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity." If someone says (posts) something offensive to you, ask if it's possible [s]he simply didn't consider how that might offend you. Really, we're all just starting to get to know one another; none of us is going to be able to never push someone's buttons about something. Let me make one thing clear about the list since I joined in 1996. THERE WERE NO HALCYON DAYS. The list wasn't a peaceful, serene place. As Mike reminded me when we talked recently, those were the days when people who had made major differences to the list, like Neile Graham, left. There were a lot of "vets" then who left because the list had grown too big for the spirit they knew. What I'm talking about isn't something about who got here first. There have always been problems, and conflicts, there always will be. Dennis nailed it pretty much on the head. It's not about vets versus newbies, it's about vets and newbies, together, feeling like a community. We all need each other for this list to work, but more importantly, we have to feel needed by each other. Each of us brings something wonderful and unique to the list. We don't need to defend ourselves against negativity, we need to see the positive things. :) Ray Wong PO BOX 6163 negativl@best.com, negativl@netcom.com Hayward, CA 94540-6163 Member #11537, Deborah Gibson International Fan Club Co-Founder and Charter Member, Sutton Foster International Fan Club ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #138 ***************************
