What is the best way to get tickets to a concert. Me and my friend were discussing this the other day, and it got me wondering. There are many options, but which can get you the best seat (camping out at the ticket booth/calling when they go on sale/ using one of the internet sites) Which of those is the best. Like, If someone were to be the first in line at the ticket place, and someone else was the first to call, and yet someone else was the first on the website, who would get the better seats? kevin <>< ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Mar 1999 17:06:02 EST From: STAC5984@aol.com Subject: NJC: Defending the vets Hey, I really don't think the vets intent is to make us who haven't been here as long feel bad. I think they are just trying to give us an idea of where they are coming from. Some of us newer EDA's don't know how the list was back in the days, and they are just letting us know that what we are about read is coming from someone who was there. I have never seen one of these "vets" start any other post, except to discuss the list, with "hi, i'm a list vet" The reason they are doing it now is because it is vital to the discussion. This may have already been said, but I'll be the first to admit I haven't read every single post on this subject. later Kevin <>< ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Mar 1999 23:02:23 -0000 From: "erin smith" Subject: Jewel shines in Brisbane While alot of the you 'Vet' and 'Newbie' Angels have been arguing over who loves Jewel more, some of us have actually been enjoying her performances over here in the Great Southern Land. Jewel's Monday night concert in Brisbane absolutely rocked, she opened with Near You Always, which along with Don't seems to be standard intro during the Australian tour. She played for practically two hours, the set including lots from both P.O.Y and Spirit. She only took one request from the audience - Sensitive, the only impromtu tune she played. Midway through the concert it almost became a jam session with Jewel and the band rocking out - it was great!! Jewel should really include more rock on her next album. She did a bit of stuff we hadn't heard before, her I Think I Saw You Last Night duet with Steve was amazing. The Polka song was also a crowd favourite. Unfortunately, we didn't have the privallege of hearing any of Jewel's poetry readings as I have seen in the reports of her other concerts. Likewise we never heard the infamous 'Whale watching story' either. The night ended with 'Near You Always', the sound of her voice resounding around the walls of the Lyric Theatre. It was amazing. Steve Poltz was very popular with the crowd, most of which had not heard of him before. Forbidden Fruit got plenty of laughs, as did John Kruck and the Star Wars Song (Go, Chewie Go!) After the concert some of us had the pleasure of meeting him, he was a complete gentleman - taking the time to talk to everyone, signing things and being in photos, making sure we were all happy before he left. Steve was totally unpretentious, nothing was too much trouble and he seemed to genuinely enjoy listening to the fans. Okay - one point of interest. I met Jewel on the Monday afternoon as she entered the Theatre for the sound check. She was lovely and looking very cool in her black cowboy hat and sunglasses. What I want to know is what is her relationship with the black bass player with whom she was holding hands?!?! Then that night she wore a tell-tale diamond ring on a certain hand - an ENGAGEMENT RING perhaps?! It was too big to be missed, blinding even the people in the back row of the theatre! We quizzed Steve on who's it was after the concert but he just smiled and said he had knew nothing of an engagement ring - joking it she may be engaged to the record company :) Well, I would appreciate your thoughts on this EDA's and would love to hear from any one else who was attended either of the Brisbane concerts. We can't wait for Jewel - and Steve - to tour again! Well I went to the library searching for some of their books, and found many of Henry Millers but none of Anias Nin, but that has nothing to do with my story. I got his book titled The Tropic of Capricorn, and was in great awe when I started to read it. And to give you the honest truth, his book is the honest truth. Our society is filled with people and thoughts all the same like this. I was just wondering if anyone else has read this book and if they have the same opinion. I thank you for you input if you have any!!!! Hi all, Jos here again from NZ. A couple of things. I have worked out the guitar tab for FatBoy, as it didn't appear to be available anywhere in the normal Jewel tab archieves. I thought about posting it on the list here, but didn't know if I'd be allowed to. I'm only a new member and not too sure about the moderation of the list etc. But email me, if you want it pacific_dreams@hotmail.com Now onto my second subject. You may or may not know that a new free prog has been written called ICQ Plus, which allows ppl to make any picture they want on their ICQ instead of the normal yukky grey color. Also allowed are changes to font, and col etc Download it from here: http://members.xoom.com/icqplus/ I have made a Jewel skin for it, which I have posted at http://skinz.org Go there and click on 'ICQ plus' from the skins list at right. Download but do unzip. Goto the new 'plus' function on icq menu, and 'import' skin. Hope you like it. It can help us to become fans of each other again. Solutions to the lack of intimacy on the list. Discussion of topics that bring divergent viewpoints out. Maybe talk of how one interprets different songs. Or different interpretations of the many songs Jewel has written. Allows us to see the creative and intelligence of those on the list. Also give insight into who each of us is. Discussion of who we are and the different cultures that we make up. We can learn a lot about each other this way and about different countries and cultures. I for one would love to learn more about the different countries and the different cultures in those countries. Helps me to understand where people are coming from and so forth. Recent discussion of Singapore started by Sean is a prime example. Join in volunteering for different activities in your communities(me I volunteer at the local Y and teach masters level swimming). The EDAF is a good organization to get you started and to assist in finding others in your area willing to help. Though it is up to you to find the organizations and areas that you can volunteer in. Get a gathering going in your area. In some areas it is tough, lack of people who are close enough to come is one reason, but continue to try and get groups together. As was said in field of dreams, "They will come!"(eventually) It is also difficult to take the responsibilty of setting up something like this as well. All of these solutions have either been discussed by those on the list before, or are something cool to do. If it seems difficult or coldhearted to state this, or has been said before, it cant be said enough, we need to get more "intellectual" and think in terms of who we are and what we can each teach or learn from each other. These are also just a few of the ideas that can come up and be discussed. And this is all just IMHO!!! Abraham Lincoln ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Mar 1999 18:56:05 -0500 (EST) From: Santee Subject: Vets, Community and who we are Vets and the whole idea of aging on the list is an interesting idea. First off let us think about what the term vet means to a person. Usually, when you here the word vet you either think of one of two things. 1. A person who cares for and is an animal doctor. Or 2. A veteran who has fought or been in a war, someone who has experienced a major event of the past. Of course we do not take #1 to be the definition of a vet here. We take #2 as a who the vets are on this list, the ones whohave experienced the different festivities, the ones who have been on here the longest. That should not be taken as gospel mind you, but it is true in that they have the memories to fall back on. Now on how that affects us. I think that the community that has grown since we started and in effect has grown into several different viewpoints. This community has many different ages, and people of many different backgrounds who all cam together for one common reason, Jewel. Now if I remember correctly(I believe it was crunch who said this), it started as, "we were fans of Jewel, who ended up becoming fans of each other." We seem to have lost a lot of the latter part of that quote now. We seem to be more of a little chat group who talks of inane and superficial topics now. One thing that seems to have been missing lately are the deep discussions on different subjects. I believe that if we can get back on track(nothing base or harsh meant here), as in discussion of different concerts that we have gone to, different gatherings around the country(shameless plug here, Lets get started on this Southeast), maybe talk of who we are, and why we came to like Jewel. We might go off topic(we need to try and relate it in some way to EDA's), but it would be nice to learn more about who we are and the people behind the handles. The Vets remeber when we were a "group" who experienced each other. Those new to the list and missing out on the previous gatherings seem to resent that. Do not resent those who have missed out and those who have met up as well. One thing that a lot of people seem to forget as well is that we (as I said before) come from many different backgrounds. It makes it hard as well sometimes to meet those people that before were only faceless names on the computer screen. A lot of the youngin's(no disrespect for those to young to really head out), are not allowed to go far from home. Its safer just to talk from home or from school and not to go to one of these "gatherings" unless you could bring friends. While that will bring more people into the "fold', a lot of people will not want to meet someone off of an email list. It isnt safe or there are these hateful folks out there. For this list on the other hand, it isnt that way. While I myself had not had the experience of being to a gathering(the southeast is not really well populated in this regard), it behooves yall to go to one. To actually see the person behind the name. I might actually make one this summer, if I can get enough time off from work. I might even head up to Bearsville this year(If I do, Dennis, be prepared to lose in paintball/lazertag) ;o). To end this rather long post, I will put forth some solutions in the next one cming soon to a station near you. Abraham Lincoln ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Mar 1999 20:11:21 -0500 (EST) From: Santee Subject: NJC: Who Are You?? Who I am. Me, I am just one of those former(do we ever leave it behind) military brats who has grown up(I am now 26) looking at different cultures, countries, and people. This has helped me to be able to view everything with a grain of salt I believe. Another thing that has formed me is where I have lived. The eastern US is mainly the focus, and some of europe, Germany(before the wall came down), and Korea. Visiting the different countries in europe while living there was also an experience in different societies. The study of history, and especially military history has always been a focus. I have always loved reading as well. History and reading of course go hand in hand. I have also a strong catholic upbringing, and never really looked at other viewpoints as having any bearing on my lifestyle. Living in the southeast(Augusta GA)now has also not lent itself to looking and actually listening to new music. Also, not liking to much of the music nowadays does that as well. When I was going thru HS, the music was of the late 80's. Groups such Adam Ant, the Hooters, Micheal Jackson, Dream Academy, and others were going thru there heyday. The focus of selling was on albums instead of singles. Maybe thats why I enjoy soundtracks and compilations so much? I dont know. But a lot of this has affected why and who I am. Major groups that I have liked and still like are Styx(their Grand Illusion album is a must for this list IMHO), Queen, da Beach Boys(the positive enrgy here is unbelievble). It is interesting what comes up when listening to groups such as these. Also a love of old 50's and 60's tunes(the Golden Oldies) and classic rock of the 70's as well as some groups of the Disco era draw me. 80's music has a strong tie here with the feel good messages. But today's music just doesnt sit in the same boat IMHO. What drew me to Jewel, you ask?? Well lets see. When I first saw her, it was on MTV at one of those beach gigs they had during the summer. Where she was playing WWSYS surrounded by the lucky few at the beachhouse. As a guy I definitely did not mind her physical beauty. But as I listened to the words, I came to enjoy her music more. I will not say I was floored at first, but after hearing YWMFM(me love to listen to ballads), she took my mind away. Now dont get me wrong here, I usually dont listen to todays music. I feel like it has gotten to sad and depressing. Alwsy asking why did this happen to me or why is this happening. I liked music that seemed to promote joy and positive energy. Very few artists, to me at least, nowadays seem to sing about positive messages. Jewel is one of the few. That is probably why I like her. What drew me to this list you ask? At first it was jewel as you might have guessed. Now I am not a "fanatic" in terms of my following of jewel, I dont collect every little tidbit about her, or have all of her posters. I did want a lot of her music at first, but i have slowly left that behind. As time wore on, I became more of a fan of most everyone on the list and less on Jewel. I have mostly enjoyed the discussions here, andwhile some just did not sit right with me of course, all in all I enjoy it here. Each and every person on this list, be it the eldest person, the ones who have been here the longest, or the youngest and most recent, they have all made it interesting. I would ask that we all say something here. It will allow us to see or form an idea of who each of us is. It will also make answering someone that much easier. Once you know someone, you can find something is easier.
