For new folks who might not know, Steve is Jewel's most frequent songwriting collaborator, a guitar player in her current band & the support act on Jewel's current tour dates. Steve is also one of the friendliest & consistantly hilarious people I've ever met, not to mention being the most prolific songwriter to emerge from the vast well of talent eminating out of San Diego. His material expands on an almost nightly basis as he often creates spontaneous songs based on his current surroundings & the people in the audience. Here's an "extremely condensed" history on Steve for those interested (followed by a discography): Steve began The Rugburns as a folk-songwriting duet with Robert Driscoll on lead guitar & harmony vocals during the late 1980's. After releasing several independant cassettes & playing extensively through Southern California during the early 1990's, they augmented The Rugburns to an electric quartet bringing in another talented songwriter Gregory Page on bass & the most energetic drummer in San Diego; Jeff (Stinky) Aafedt. They were signed to Bizzarre/ Priority & released a single & their 1st album, "Morning Wood" in 1994. Touring, several other Rugburns releases & collaborations continued for the next few years. After almost a decade of hellraising marathon gigs & personel changes within The Rugburns, Steve released & promoted his long awaited 1st solo album "One Left Shoe" in early 1998 on Mercury Records. This year, Steve indulges his marathon capabilities by working double duty on Jewel's current "Spirit" World Tour dates as both support act and guitarist in Jewel's new touring band. Steve is sure to provide many spontaneous moments throughout Jewel's 1999 tour. Several people have written me asking about Steve's releases. Although "One Left Shoe" is his first solo album, he's been featured on MANY releases & has been active for a long time! For those interested, here's most of his official releases (excluding singles-which I can't remember) & albums that he has contributed to in a significant way. You can also find more info on Steve at Jewel's website (www.jeweljk.com) where he's currently our featured artist. I'm not what you'd call a list vet, because I joined the jewel list when I got online, in early 97, after JS, but I remember what it was like then. I never got into posting a lot, but I read every single post. When I joined, I was welcomed. I read about Chelstock, the EDA Adventure, and I read about jewelstock, which was slightly befuddling because I live about thirty minutes from where it was held. But I didn't care, what I found on the jewel list was a bunch of people who lived all over the place, and who seemed to understand like no one I knew in real life, why jewel was so good. Yeah, it was about the voice, the songs. But more than that it comes down to the whole "Everyday Angel" term. What is an everyday angel? To me, it's not someone superhuman. I liked Jewel because she wasn't perfect, because she had funny songs, and some were hits and some were misses. I liked her because she wasn't much older than me, because she went from having not too much to "living [her] dream." Because she was like me. I was 14 when I heard POY, and I related immediately. None of my friends understood why I liked her. But the people on this list did, they were people who were trying to be optimistic, but not in a fluffy, new age way. In a human way. And somewhere in the past few years, Jewel got very popular. The message seemed to have gotten misinterpreted, or maybe the message changed. I stopped reading all the posts. I switched to digest. And a week or so before my 17th birthday, MrBB posted to the jewel list about an opportunity to be on MTV and see Jewel in NYC. I responded, got really lucky, and my sister and I took the train from upstate NY down to Grand Central Station to see jewel on November 17, 1998. My seventeenth birthday. It was the first EDA gathering of any kind I would go to. When I got there, I didn't know anyone. But I heard other people saying names that were familiar, from posts. And I did meet Adrian du Plessis, who was very cool and who stole a jewel poster (possession of the "MTV art department") for me ;) So I got a touch of the EDA magic that day. So, if anyone actually reads this or not, that's fine with me. My opinion is no more important than anyone else's. But I think the one thing most people need to think about is why they liked jewel in the first place. why they have been on this list for a multiple number of years. I can't answer that myself very well, but I know there is something cool about the people who have come together in appreciation for what Jewel was. She inspired me to play guitar, which has become a defining point of my life. And maybe that Jewel doesn't exist anymore. But maybe it's that whoever you were when you first liked Jewel, that person, doesn't exist anymore. Everything changes. It's not about moderated or unmoderated. "Innocence can't be lost, it just needs to be maintained," right? Or "We are everyday angels, be careful with me cause I'd like to stay that way." Or "Do you hate me because I'm pieces of you?" Pick a quote, start clumsily strumming YWMFM on your guitar, and stop reading this post which has become rather too long. I'm going to go steal some food from the cynics (sean hooks?) and give it to everybody that has some faith. yes, kids, I just think the list's innocence has rightfully been lost. I thought things got better with age? blue cheese does, at least, I suppose. sarah ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 14:58:06 EST From: QPrincessD@aol.com Subject: real audio hey angels can any of you send me some real audio the page i used to get all mine from is down and i am sad so now i need to find some else where cuz the ones wont even play with that site down =( and i had my fav songs on there please please please send me some audio!@!! thanx a whole bunch luv me luv ya vj the munchkin princess angel ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 13:36:47 PST From: "Chris Sylvester" Subject: [none] hey all you eda's. would somebody mind telling me how i can get on the Eda Thoughts list? --thanx! ~Chris, the angel who'se just learning to fly "Conformity and reason have clipped your wings, and forever bound you to the earth" -an excerpt from my poem "On the Outside, Looking In" (email me if you wanna read the rest) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 21:09:05 -0000 From: "Chris Groves" Subject: UK review of A Night Without Armour The following is from the April 99 issue of the UK magazine Record Mart and Buyer. - ----------------------------------------- THE POEMS OF JEWEL: A NIGHT WITHOUT ARMOUR PRICE : £9.99 PUBLISHER: BOXTREE A blonde, guitar strumming, multimedia phenomenon, Jewel is one of the most respected artists in popular music today. Her haunting debut album, Pieces Of You, has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. With songs such as Who Will Save Your Soul and You Were Meant For Me dominating the top of the charts and four years of continuous touring, Jewel has established herself as a talented superstar. This year she will be touring in the UK and Ireland and appears in her first major motion picture debut To Live On, directed by Ang Lee (The Ice Storm, Sense and Sensibility). This Alaskan singer, who dated Sean Penn, is much more than just a music industry success. Before her gifted songwriting comes an even more individual art: poetry. It is these heartfelt poems that reveal her youthful musings on everything from sexuality to fame to homelessness. There are images of the road, the people, the bars, the planes, the places exotic and mundane, loneliness and friendship. Frank and honest, serious and suddenly playful this collection of poems taken from her journal, is a talented artist's intimate portrait of what makes us uniquely human. Intimate and inspiring, these words will be embraced by a dedicated following hungering for more and varying works from Jewel. - ----------------------------------------- Chris. I think you guys are caring to much about the future. Things change you gotta understand that. Things are never gonna stay the same. Sure we might like them to but it just doesn't work like that. If you want to make this list better you gotta stop bickering about it and work on it. I think some people like me are just tired of reading them. I'm sure there are a lot of us. Also I'm not a vet I've only been a memeber since Dec. Just because I'm not a vet doesn't mean I don't like Jewel as much as you guys that have been here for a while. Your making then new people feel uncumfutable. I know you guys are doing it to me. And I've been here for a while. Is that what you guys want for all us non-vets. YOu know the line "Only kindness matters" I don't think that you guys are folowing that too well. Just think about that. I know maybe you don't relise it but your saying that you don't want us non-vets here. That's what it all comes down to. YOur saying it was better before all these extra people came. I came here to thins list to feel good and it's not really working like that. Isn't this soppused to be a list with kindness. Maybe you vets want us all to leave. We could go but that would never make me love Jewel anyless. Just think about who you guys might be hurting. I've been on the list since around end of March/beginning of April last year, and I don't post very often. I'm a very big fan of Jewel's, and I like to collect imported CD singles. I was in the store where I usually get them, and I saw in her area a couple of copies of a "Foolish Games" single by "Jem". It didn't have an import sticker in it, and there weren't any pictures of her anywhere on the cover (which I've learned to think means that it's not really the artist's, after I bought a CD of the Spice Girls which was definitely not), but it said it came from Wiggly Tooth. They wanted $9.99 for it and I wasn't sure I could handle it not really being her singing. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about this. I would like to buy it if it's her, but I wasn't sure because it was by someone named "Jem". Any help would be greatly appreciated. To: jason@post1.com, jewel@smoe.org Sender: owner-jewel@smoe.org Precedence: bulk >I know nothing I say will change Sean's perspective >of Singapore (except maybe ask him to come over to >Singapore for a visit) so I'll take it from another >angle... I think that this statement is false. Considering that Sean is not presumably educated on how "it is" in Singapore, he merely put forth what is his complete and honest opinion on the matter. Now, it seems to be the truth that some of the assumptions that he made were in fact false assumptions and therefore his conclusion was not the best of conclusions, but he had the confidence to express it and this allows for discussion, wherein he is likely to learn more about the subject that he began the discussion in. This is how we learn, by making mistakes and being corrected on them by more knowledgible people. If we try to be so PC that we hide our opinions so as not to offend anyone, we freeze our learning potential. On that note, if someone communicates something that you believe is false, don't be insulted, that is an thoughtless responce. Isn't it Jewel's stated purpose for humanity anyway that we live thoughtful, conscious lives- lives uncommon? HGH's first method to obtain its mission is education, take a look at the web site itself, education is first on the list of methods for improvement. Instead of being insulted, try to understand the comments that insult you: why they were made and what false assumptions they may be supported by, and then attempt to discuss the validity of the different parts of the comments. This way, both parties, the person writing and the person responding, can further evolve their minds and further evolve their "humanness." So, the reason that I think the above statement is wrong is that if we make bridges and work on things together, then learning can take place. As for thinking that nothing you say will change another person's opinion, I think you will find that if you come to them peacefully, understandingly, and with an open mind, that they will listen to you. In fact, even if they at first refuse to listen, they will hear what you have had to say and if you said it well, they will have problems falsifying your logic and when they come to a place where they are alone, if you make an argument based upon truth, they will have no choice but to deal with the validity of your argument. >Such a post is really something unnecessary, >something which I think harms this list and only >reinforces the need for regulation, which I gather >from recent mails, isn't very popular with most >people on the list. Considering my prior line of reasoning, it seems to me that this situation actually supports the deregulation of the list in order that more opportunities for learning will occur. What really harms the list in a situation like this is allowing a false assumption to go unchallenged or being insulted by the false assertion to the point that you fail to assist in the education and correction (or discussion) process. That is why most of us are pushing for deregulation. Not because Mike is a bad person or because any of the other moderators are bad people. Moderation is established to attempt to further the education process, unfortunately, those things which are detrimental and those things which are necessary look very alike. In fact, they are the same thing. You see, the issue that a moderator must struggle with is not what a post says, but how the list members will react to the post. Let's us suppose for the purpose of explaination and argument that I am an Arian activist. Now, let us say that I write a post making any number of pro-Arian statements. Now Mike has to decide whether to include it or not. In this case, the post would probabally not make it onto the list. Why? Because almost certainly a good amount of people would take offense rather than attempt to understand why I might write such a post (and help me understand why my [presumed] assumptions were faulty) and then would cause a ruckus and disruptance of the learning process. However, if when we read the e-mails on this list, we were to evalute them, attempt to understand them, and then create a healthy open discussion of them in order to create learning for the members, then Mike would not have to censor our mail. Mike, as moderator, is simply doing what is necessary to allow the survival of the list as something worth being subscribed to. It is our collective responsibility but more immediately YOUR [each and every "you" that is subscribed to the list] responsibility to be humans that are wise enough to attempt to understand and explain each post rather than battle over them, so that Mike CAN allow posts even as extreme as something that would be pro-Arian to be distributed to the list because he knows that we, as a group, will attempt to create learning in our community rather than creating dissention; because he knows that when we have a problem that we will fall back on love and understanding to work that problem out; because we will be sensitive to each and every individual on the list, no matter what they do or say; and because he knows that we have created a learning environment that is so safe (that is, it has an "absense of fear" of dissention or backlash) that we can really deal with the things that are close to us and basic to our self-conceptualization of our own beings so that we can as individuals truly evolve as human beings and then attempt to assist the rest of society to come to a place where that evolution can take place there as well. That's my e-mail, please don't just take it as truth, think about it: why it might be right, why it might be wrong, what parts are more right than others, what parts are more wrong than others, but most of all, in all those questions, WHY you support the answers that you do, then offer them back up for discussion so that we can help each other progress by sharing our own knowledge and understanding to one another. Let's make the world a better place. Erik Johnson The Idealistic Angel ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #126 ***************************
